For a small, single-node Tomcat application with MongoDB on the same VPS, start with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB of RAM, SSD or NVMe storage, and a supported Linux distribution. That is an engineering starting point, not a vendor-published minimum. A 2 GB machine may boot both services, but it leaves little room for the operating system, Java native memory, MongoDB’s cache, monitoring, and traffic spikes.
The correct production size depends on your Java heap, MongoDB working set and indexes, concurrent requests, connection counts, retention, backups, and storage latency. Measure those items and scale rather than treating any VPS specification as universal.

There are three different thresholds people call a minimum:
- Installable: the operating system can install Java, Tomcat, and MongoDB.
- Runnable: both services start and answer light test traffic.
- Reliable: the server continues serving requests while MongoDB flushes data, Java performs garbage collection, logs rotate, backups run, and traffic varies.
A tiny VPS can meet the first two thresholds and still fail the third. The figures in this article target a small, reliable single-node deployment, while making clear which values are recommendations rather than official limits.

Official software and platform constraints
Tomcat requires a compatible Java runtime
The Apache Tomcat 11.0.26 README states: “Tomcat 11.0 requires Java 17 or later.” Install a Java runtime supported by the Tomcat major version you choose; the VPS size does not compensate for an incompatible runtime. Verify the active version before starting Tomcat:
java -versionIf you use an older Tomcat major release, follow that release’s documented Java support instead of assuming Java 17 is mandatory for every Tomcat version.
Tomcat’s memory floor is not a production size
Apache’s memory guidance says, “if your computer has less than 128MB of ram – you will probably have trouble.” That statement describes a very low operating threshold, not enough memory for a modern Java web application plus MongoDB. Apache’s HowTo shows an example Java heap setting of -Xms256m -Xmx256m and warns that physical RAM must also cover the operating system and the application.
Java uses memory outside the heap for class metadata, thread stacks, JIT-compiled code, direct buffers, and other native allocations. Therefore, a VPS with 512 MB or 1 GB cannot safely be treated as having that entire amount available for -Xmx.
MongoDB has CPU and operating-system requirements
MongoDB 5.0 and later require supported x86_64 microarchitectures with AVX on applicable Intel and AMD systems. On arm64, the processor must provide ARMv8.2-A or later. A plan advertised only as “64-bit” is not enough evidence; check the actual virtual CPU features exposed by the provider.
MongoDB also supports only listed operating-system releases and has filesystem expectations. Use an operating system from the MongoDB support matrix for your server version, and select a filesystem that supports fsync() on directories. If either the CPU feature set or the filesystem behavior is wrong, changing RAM will not fix the deployment.

MongoDB should avoid swapping
MongoDB’s production notes say it performs best where swapping can be avoided or kept to a minimum. They recommend a Linux vm.swappiness value of 1 or 0 depending on the application and cluster’s needs. Treat this as a tuning and monitoring requirement, not as permission to provision too little RAM. Swap can hide memory pressure temporarily while introducing latency at exactly the time the database is busiest.
Recommended starting VPS sizes
The following tiers are practical engineering recommendations for a single VPS. They are not published minimum SKUs from Apache or MongoDB.

Choose the lower tier only when measurements support it. A production service with a growing database, frequent reports, or bursty traffic should start at the next tier or separate MongoDB from Tomcat.
How much RAM does Tomcat and MongoDB need?
Build a memory budget instead of assigning all RAM to the JVM
On a shared VPS, total memory must cover:
- Linux kernel, services, SSH, logging, and security tooling.
- Tomcat’s Java heap plus native JVM memory and thread stacks.
- MongoDB’s working set, indexes, connections, and internal overhead.
- Monitoring agents, compression, backup processes, and temporary files.
- Short-lived bursts during deployment, garbage collection, index builds, or checkpoint activity.
As an illustration, a 4 GB server might leave roughly 0.5–1 GB for the operating system and reserve a controlled heap such as 512 MB to 1.5 GB, with the remainder available to MongoDB and operational overhead. Those figures are starting assumptions, not a sizing rule. Confirm them with resident memory, Java heap usage, MongoDB cache behavior, and swap activity under representative load.
Set the Java heap deliberately
Use CATALINA_OPTS or the service manager’s environment file rather than allowing an opaque default to consume the machine:
CATALINA_OPTS="-Xms512m -Xmx1024m"The example reserves a 512 MB initial heap and a 1 GB maximum heap; change it to match the application and leave room for non-heap memory and MongoDB. Setting -Xmx equal to nearly all physical RAM can make the kernel reclaim aggressively or terminate processes even when the Java heap itself looks healthy.

Understand MongoDB’s working set
MongoDB benefits when frequently accessed documents and indexes remain in memory. If the working set is larger than available RAM, reads fall through to storage more often and latency becomes dependent on disk performance. Indexes also consume memory, so a database containing a small amount of data can still need substantial RAM when it has many or large indexes.
Track resident memory, cache activity, page faults, operation latency, connection counts, and slow queries. If the working set grows beyond the available budget, adding RAM usually provides a more direct improvement than merely increasing the Java heap.

CPU, virtualization, and architecture checks
Two vCPUs are a reasonable starting point for light traffic, but CPU count alone does not describe performance. Providers may expose different generations of processors, and noisy neighbors can affect burst performance. Tomcat needs CPU for request handling, serialization, encryption, and garbage collection; MongoDB needs it for query execution, indexing, compression, and background maintenance.
Before ordering a plan, verify the architecture and instruction features from the actual VPS or a trial instance:
uname -m
lscpu | grep -E 'Architecture|Model name|Flags'For MongoDB 5.0 or later on x86_64, confirm the required AVX capability is visible. For arm64, confirm ARMv8.2-A or newer. If the provider cannot document those features, treat the plan as unverified regardless of its advertised vCPU count.
Monitor CPU steal time, run-queue length, and per-process usage after deployment. Sustained saturation, long garbage-collection pauses, or slow queries during otherwise modest traffic indicate a CPU or contention problem that memory alone will not solve.

Storage, filesystem, and operating-system requirements
Use low-latency storage
MongoDB is sensitive to storage latency for journal and data operations, while Tomcat writes logs, temporary files, and uploaded content. Prefer SSD or NVMe-backed VPS storage. There is no universal disk-size or IOPS minimum in the official guidance; calculate capacity from database data, indexes, journal space, application files, logs, backups, and growth.
Keep free space available for temporary spikes and maintenance. A disk that is technically large enough on day one can become unsafe when logs, retained records, and backup snapshots accumulate.
Select a supported Linux image and filesystem
Match the Linux distribution and release to the MongoDB version’s supported-platform list and the Java/Tomcat support policy. Confirm that the chosen filesystem provides the directory fsync() behavior MongoDB expects. Do not assume that every VPS image, container layer, or network-mounted volume has identical durability semantics.

Configure swapping consciously
Inspect the current policy:
sysctl vm.swappinessWhere appropriate for your workload, set a low value such as 1 or 0 and make it persistent through your Linux sysctl configuration. Continue watching memory pressure; disabling swap on an undersized host can turn gradual latency into an out-of-memory kill.
Can Tomcat and MongoDB share one VPS?
Yes, for development, test systems, internal tools, and genuinely small production workloads. Co-location reduces network hops and hosting complexity, but both services compete for the same CPU, RAM, disk queue, and failure domain.

- MongoDB’s working set or indexes approach the server’s available memory.
- Tomcat requires a large heap or has many simultaneous threads.
- Backups, index builds, reports, or imports run during peak traffic.
- A database incident would take down the application and its data access at the same time.
- You need independent scaling, maintenance windows, or high availability.
Separate nodes let you scale the application and database independently and isolate I/O. They also add network latency, firewall rules, backup coordination, and another bill, so separation is a reliability decision rather than an automatic requirement.

- Confirm compatibility. Select a supported Linux release, install the Java version required by your Tomcat major version, and verify MongoDB’s CPU architecture and instruction-set requirements.
- Provision headroom. Start with the appropriate tier from the sizing table, SSD/NVMe storage, and enough disk for data, indexes, logs, backups, and growth.
- Install and isolate services. Run Tomcat and MongoDB as dedicated, non-root service accounts. Restrict MongoDB network exposure to trusted application hosts or localhost where practical.
- Set JVM limits. Define
CATALINA_OPTSwith measured-Xmsand-Xmxvalues that leave memory for the OS, native JVM allocations, and MongoDB. - Configure memory pressure. Apply a low
vm.swappinessvalue when appropriate, and configure alerts for available memory, swap-in activity, and out-of-memory events. - Secure and update. Enable host firewall rules, authentication and authorization, encrypted connections where required, timely security updates, and restricted administrative access.
- Test realistic load. Exercise representative requests, queries, imports, backups, and restarts. Record latency, error rates, CPU, heap, resident memory, disk latency, and free space.
- Test recovery. Restore a backup on a separate location and document how to rebuild the VPS. A backup that has never been restored is not a verified recovery plan.
Signs that the VPS is undersized
- Frequent out-of-memory kills or restarts: reduce excessive heap reservations, stop unneeded agents, and move to a larger memory tier before data loss occurs.
- Swap activity and rising request latency: identify the process consuming memory, reduce concurrency if possible, and add RAM rather than relying on swap.
- Long Java garbage-collection pauses: inspect heap occupancy and allocation rate; increasing
-Xmxis useful only if the host has spare physical memory. - Slow MongoDB queries with normal CPU: examine indexes, working-set residency, and storage latency. More vCPUs will not cure an I/O-bound workload.
- High disk wait or full volumes: remove unsafe log growth, expand storage, move backups off-host, and investigate the underlying disk class.
- CPU saturation or steal time: reduce expensive application work, choose a less-contended provider tier, add vCPUs, or separate the database.
Use trends rather than a single spike. Capacity planning should consider peak traffic, scheduled jobs, deployment events, and growth over the period between hardware changes.
When to scale vertically or split the services
Scale the existing VPS first
Vertical scaling is simplest when the application is small and the provider allows a resize with a controlled restart. Add RAM when MongoDB’s active data and indexes no longer fit comfortably; add CPU when request or query execution is compute-bound; move to faster storage when latency and disk wait dominate.
Separate Tomcat and MongoDB
Use separate servers when either service needs independent maintenance, when database I/O interferes with request latency, or when one component’s growth is much faster than the other’s. Place backups and monitoring outside the database host when possible so a full disk or host failure does not remove both the live data and its recovery copy.
Plan replication separately from minimum sizing
A single VPS is a single failure domain. Replica sets, redundant application nodes, and multi-zone designs introduce additional CPU, memory, storage, networking, and operational requirements. They should be sized from the availability objective, not added to a “minimum VPS” calculation as if they were free.

Practical answers to common sizing questions
Is 2 GB of RAM enough?
It can be enough for a small development instance with tiny data and light traffic, but it is a poor default for a reliable production Tomcat-and-MongoDB host. The operating system, Java native memory, MongoDB cache, monitoring, and maintenance tasks leave little safety margin.
Do I need Java 17?
You need Java 17 or later when running Tomcat 11.0, as stated in the Tomcat 11.0.26 README. Other Tomcat major versions can have different supported Java ranges.
Can any 64-bit VPS run MongoDB 5.0 or later?
No. On applicable x86_64 systems, the processor must expose the required AVX capability; arm64 systems must meet the ARMv8.2-A-or-later requirement. Verify the virtual CPU rather than relying on the “64-bit” label.
Is more vCPU better than more RAM?
Only when measurements show CPU saturation. If MongoDB is missing its working set or the host is swapping, additional RAM is usually the first corrective resource. If CPU is idle but storage wait is high, faster storage is more relevant than either extra vCPU or heap.
