Short answer: Choose a mini PC when the computer will stay on one desk and you already have, or are willing to buy, a monitor and input devices. Choose a laptop when you regularly move between rooms, offices, campus or travel, or when you want a screen, keyboard, trackpad and battery included in one package.
Neither form factor is automatically faster. The processor, graphics, memory, storage, power limits, cooling system and upgrade options of the exact models matter more than the words mini PC or laptop. For a compact desktop, compare the complete working setup rather than the computer alone.
The decision in one table
| Question | Mini PC | Laptop |
|---|---|---|
| Where will it be used? | Best suited to a fixed or mostly fixed desk. | Designed to move between locations and operate away from a desk. |
| What is included? | The computer normally requires a separate display, keyboard and mouse. | Screen, keyboard, trackpad and battery are integrated. |
| Desk setup | Can leave the display, keyboard and mouse connected permanently. | Can open and use immediately, then connect to a monitor or dock at a desk. |
| Portability | Limited because the display and peripherals remain separate. | High because the main working components travel together. |
| Multiple displays | Some models provide several display outputs; the exact model must be checked. | Can support an external monitor or dock, subject to the laptop and dock specifications. |
| Performance decision | Depends on the installed CPU, graphics, memory, storage, power and cooling design. | Depends on the installed CPU, graphics, memory, storage, power and cooling design. |
| Expansion | Varies by model and is generally limited compared with a desktop tower. | Varies widely; some parts may be replaceable and others may be fixed. |
| Complete purchase cost | Includes any monitor, keyboard, mouse, cables or adapters you do not already own. | Starts with a complete usable computer, though a larger monitor or dock may still be worthwhile. |
Microsoft’s United States desktop-versus-laptop guidance summarizes the practical distinction this way: “A desktop requires space and a proper setup; whereas a laptop goes where you go.” A mini PC occupies the desktop side of that choice, while a laptop can serve both as a portable computer and as a docked desk system.

What you are actually buying
A mini PC is a small desktop system
A mini PC is a computer in a compact enclosure. It does not normally include the screen or the devices used to control it. You supply a compatible monitor, keyboard and mouse, then connect power, video and any other required cables. That separation is useful when you already have a good display or want to choose a larger screen than a laptop can provide.

The compact enclosure also means the design determines what hardware can fit, how much heat it can remove and which parts can be serviced. ASUS describes mini PCs as having generally limited upgradeability, although the limits differ substantially between models. Treat every specification sheet as a description of one product, not a promise about the entire category.
A laptop is an integrated kit
A laptop combines the computer, display, keyboard, trackpad and battery. Opening the lid gives you a working system without first arranging a monitor or desktop peripherals. This is the simplest option for people who use more than one location or need to work during transport or away from wall power.
The built-in screen is smaller than many external monitors, and portability can add cost. At a fixed desk, you can connect a laptop to a larger monitor and use a dock to reduce cable clutter. The laptop therefore does not force you to choose between mobility and a permanent workstation; it changes how much equipment you carry and connect.
Compare the complete setup cost
There is no meaningful price comparison between a bare mini PC and a fully equipped laptop unless you count the equipment needed to use each one. Start with what you already own, then list what is missing.
Mini PC checklist
- Mini PC and its power adapter.
- Display, unless an existing monitor or television is suitable.
- Keyboard and mouse.
- Video cable or adapter matching the computer and display.
- Any dock, hub, network adapter or other connection needed for your desk.
Laptop checklist
- Laptop and its charger.
- External monitor, if the built-in display is not comfortable for long sessions or does not provide the workspace you need.
- Dock, hub, keyboard or mouse if you want a permanent desktop arrangement.
- Video cable and any adapters required by the laptop, dock and monitor.
Microsoft notes that a monitor can turn a laptop into a workstation and that a dock can reduce cable clutter. The same accounting principle applies in reverse: a mini PC may be inexpensive to move between desks only if each desk already has the display and input devices it needs. Current comparative prices are not established here, so price the missing components in your own market rather than assuming one form factor is always cheaper.

Desk space, screen size and everyday handling
A mini PC leaves the choice of screen, keyboard and pointing device open. You can select a large monitor, a particular keyboard layout or a setup that keeps the computer out of sight. A fixed arrangement also means you can leave cables connected and begin work at the same desk each day.
A laptop uses less setup time because its screen and controls travel with it. On a desk, however, the built-in screen may be smaller than an external monitor. If you connect an external display, decide whether you will keep using the laptop keyboard and trackpad or add separate input devices. The resulting footprint is then the laptop plus the accessories, not the laptop by itself.

Measure the space for the complete arrangement. A small computer does not automatically create a small workstation if the required monitor, keyboard, mouse, power adapter and cables consume most of the available surface.
Portability: the clearest dividing line
Choose the laptop when moving the whole working environment is a regular requirement. Its display and input devices remain with the computer, so changing locations does not require another monitor and keyboard. This is the decisive advantage for shared homes, multiple offices, classrooms and travel.
A mini PC can be physically light, but transporting it alone does not transport the display or controls. It makes sense to move one between places only when compatible peripherals are already installed at each destination or when you are comfortable carrying those items too. For a computer that will remain on one desk, that limitation may not matter.

Performance depends on the exact configuration
Form factor is not a performance specification. ASUS identifies the processor, dedicated graphics, memory and storage as primary performance factors, while the system design determines the power and cooling requirements the hardware can sustain. Compare the actual configurations rather than a product family name.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Record the exact processor model in each candidate. Two computers marketed for similar uses can have different CPU classes, core counts or power limits. The processor name alone is not enough if one system is configured to run within a tighter thermal or power envelope.
Graphics
Determine whether the workload needs integrated graphics or a dedicated GPU. Demanding creative and gaming software can be sensitive to graphics capability and to the cooling available for sustained operation. A mini PC without the required graphics hardware is not made equivalent by its smaller size, and a laptop with a dedicated GPU is not automatically faster than every desktop-sized system.
Memory and storage
Check the installed memory capacity, number of memory slots, storage type and available storage capacity. Also check whether the memory and drive are replaceable. These details affect the useful life of the particular machine and cannot be inferred from its form factor.
Power and cooling
Thin-and-light laptops, gaming laptops and desktops can require different power and cooling designs. A system that looks strong on a short specification list may behave differently under a long render, compile or game session if its cooling design limits sustained operation. The available sources do not provide a controlled benchmark comparison, so do not claim that mini PCs universally outperform or underperform laptops.

Displays, ports and docking
For a mini PC, count the display outputs and verify the supported resolutions and refresh rates for the exact model. The number of connectors is not enough if they do not match your monitors or required settings. MSI lists three-display support for the Cubi 5 12M; that is a claim for that product listing, not a category-wide guarantee.
For a laptop, inspect the built-in display and the available external-display connections. A dock can consolidate power, displays and peripherals at a desk, but compatibility depends on the laptop, dock and monitors. Confirm the supported display outputs before buying a dock rather than assuming every USB-C connection provides the same capabilities.
Write down the desk configuration you want: one large display, two displays, or the laptop screen plus an external display. Then verify that the chosen computer can drive that arrangement through its native ports or a compatible dock.
Upgradeability and serviceability
Mini PC upgradeability ranges from user-replaceable memory and storage to highly restricted designs. ASUS characterizes it as generally limited compared with a traditional desktop. Check the official specifications and service documentation for the exact model before treating an upgrade as part of your plan.

For any candidate, verify:
- Whether memory is socketed or fixed, and the maximum supported capacity.
- How many storage slots exist and which drive formats they accept.
- Whether the wireless module, cooling assembly and other serviceable parts can be accessed.
- Which components are included in the particular SKU.
- Whether opening the system affects the manufacturer’s service terms in your region.
Do not assume that a laptop is always sealed or that a mini PC offers desktop-tower expansion. Both conclusions are too broad; the product’s construction decides the answer.

Use these figures to frame questions about a mini PC: Does it fit the intended mounting or shelf? Are the listed memory and drive options enough for the planned workload? Are the required display connectors included? Verify the precise SKU and included components before purchase, because a listing’s capabilities should not be generalized to every configuration.

Step-by-step buying method
- Describe the locations. Write down whether the computer will stay at one desk, move between two fixed desks, or travel regularly. A fixed desk favors the mini PC’s separated components; repeated movement favors the laptop’s integrated package.
- Inventory what you own. Record your monitors, keyboard, mouse, cables, dock and adapters. Mark which items are usable with the new computer and which would need replacement.
- Define the display arrangement. Decide whether you need one external display, multiple displays, or the laptop screen plus an external monitor. Check the exact model’s outputs and the dock’s compatibility.
- Write the workload requirements. Identify ordinary office work, multitasking, creative applications, gaming or another demanding use. For demanding software, specify the minimum CPU, GPU, memory and storage configuration rather than selecting by enclosure type.
- Check sustained operation. Compare the system’s power and cooling design, especially for long renders, builds or gaming sessions. Do not substitute a form-factor assumption for a benchmark or a manufacturer specification.
- Inspect upgrade paths. Confirm memory slots, maximum capacity, storage bays or slots and service access. Treat every upgrade claim as model-specific.
- Price the complete arrangement. Add every missing display, input device, dock, cable and adapter. Compare the resulting totals in your local market.
- Verify the exact SKU. Before ordering, match the processor, graphics, memory, storage, ports, included power adapter and display support to the listing you intend to buy.
Which choice fits common situations?
Choose a mini PC for a dedicated desk
A mini PC is the stronger fit when the workstation stays in one place, desk space is tight, and you already own a suitable monitor and peripherals. It is also attractive when you want to choose a separate large display or keep the computer distinct from the screen. Select it only after confirming that the exact model meets the workload and provides the memory, storage and display connections you need.
Choose a laptop for regular movement
A laptop is the better fit when you work in multiple rooms or locations, need battery operation, or value having the screen and input devices in the same package. At home or in an office, connect it to a larger monitor and dock if the built-in display is not sufficient for your desk routine.
Investigate both for demanding software
For video, 3D, engineering, gaming or other demanding applications, compare specific CPU and GPU configurations, sustained power, cooling, memory, display requirements and upgrade paths. A label such as mini PC or laptop cannot settle the performance question, and no controlled benchmark comparison is established by the cited material.
Pitfalls that lead to a poor choice
- Comparing box prices only: a mini PC still needs a display and input devices, while a laptop may need a monitor and dock for comfortable desk work.
- Assuming every mini PC supports upgrades: compact designs differ; confirm the memory and storage layout for the exact SKU.
- Assuming every laptop is unserviceable: upgrade and service limits vary by model.
- Choosing by processor name alone: graphics, memory, storage, power and cooling also shape the result.
- Counting ports without checking capability: verify display standards, supported monitors and dock compatibility.
- Using a model example as a category rule: the Cubi 5 12M’s 64 GB memory listing, storage bays and three-display support belong to that product listing.
- Ignoring regional details: the Microsoft guidance cited here is labeled for the United States market, while ASUS guidance is from India and other comparison material may be region-specific. Check local availability, specifications and service terms.
Bottom-line decision
For a compact desktop that never leaves one desk, buy the mini PC when its complete cost—including the display and peripherals—fits your plan and its exact hardware meets the workload. For a computer that must travel or work in several places, buy the laptop and add a monitor or dock when you want a permanent workstation. If performance is the priority, set the form factor aside and compare the actual processor, graphics, memory, storage, power, cooling and upgrade specifications.
