A mini PC paired with a projector can put a 100-inch image in a travel workspace, but that does not automatically make it a better laptop replacement. The practical trade depends on image sharpness and brightness, room and setup conditions, and the weight and power of the complete kit—not just the computer or the screen diagonal.
What changes when a mini PC replaces a travel laptop?
A laptop combines the computer, display, keyboard, trackpad and battery in one device. A mini PC separates those pieces: you bring the computer and connect it to a display, plus whatever controls and power accessories you need. With a projector, the reward can be a much larger image; the cost is more equipment and a setup that depends on the room.
That makes this a specific trade, not a universal upgrade. A mini PC may suit travel where a large shared screen or presentation surface matters and the destination has enough space. A laptop remains the more self-contained choice when you need to work immediately in changing locations. Without the exact computer, projector, packed weights and real-work results, there is no basis for claiming that one arrangement is lighter, faster or more capable than the other.

What does “100-inch” mean in practice?
It is the diagonal size of the projected image, not a promise of a bright, sharp picture in every room. The projector needs sufficient throw distance, a suitable surface and conditions that let the image remain visible. Brightness figures also need context: manufacturers may report different units, so a bare lumen number is not a reliable cross-model comparison.

For a work setup, consider the intended image size alongside native resolution, brightness and the distance needed to produce that image. A big diagonal can be useful for viewing a presentation or spreading content across a shared surface; it does not turn a low-resolution projector into a high-resolution computer display.

The numbers point to different priorities rather than a single winner. The M1 mini Plus is the lightest listed model, but its native 854×480 resolution and 50 ANSI lumens are important limits for detailed work. The ML750i is also light and reaches 100 inches on its stated range, but its native resolution is 1280×800, not 1080p. Acer lists native 1080p and up to 1,200 lumens, while the heavier LG is the listed 4K option and specifies the 100-inch throw distance. Brightness figures should not be ranked as if their units and test conditions were interchangeable.
When a portable monitor may be the better travel display
A portable monitor gives you a contained, close-up work surface without relying on projection distance, room lighting or a blank wall. ViewSonic’s travel category lists portable monitors from 15.6 to 17.2 inches and a separate portable projector advertised for images up to 100 inches. The trade is straightforward: a monitor is much smaller but more predictable for direct work; a projector can create a far larger image if the room and surface cooperate.

If the main task is writing, spreadsheets or detailed interface work in varied locations, prioritize a display you can use regardless of the room. If the main goal is a large image for presentations or shared viewing, projection may be worth the extra setup. A projection surface or stand only becomes necessary if the destination does not provide a usable surface; the cited specifications do not establish what a particular traveler will find.

The projector’s listed weight is only one part of the load. The mini PC, its power supply, projector power, cables, keyboard and pointing device all count. So do the time and space needed to connect, position and focus the image. Compare the packed system with the laptop you would otherwise carry, rather than comparing computer bodies alone.

- Image quality: Check native resolution and the projector’s brightness figure with its stated unit. Make sure the expected image supports your actual work.
- Room fit: Verify that the room can provide the throw distance for your target size, adequate darkness and a suitable projection surface.
- Power: Identify every required power source. A built-in battery or listed charging option does not, by itself, establish how long the projector will run for your use.
- Compatibility: Confirm that the mini PC’s video output matches the projector input, and decide how you will handle keyboard, pointer and any network-dependent tasks.
- Travel burden: Weigh and pack the computer, display, power supplies, controls and cables together; account for setup and pack-up as part of the trip.
How to decide whether the swap suits your trips
- List your real work tasks. Identify whether you need fine text and multiple windows, or mainly a large image for viewing and presentations.
- Set a realistic image target. Treat 100 inches as a possible size, then check the model’s native resolution, brightness unit and stated throw information against the room you expect to use.
- Confirm the connection and power chain. Match the mini PC’s video output to the projector input and account for power and control devices.
- Compare the packed setup. Include all accessories and assess whether extra setup is acceptable for the locations you visit.
- Keep a fallback in mind. If you cannot count on a suitable room, projection surface and working distance, a portable monitor or laptop is the more dependable display arrangement.
