For a first game, choose classic Minesweeper on a square grid—ideally a familiar Beginner preset such as 9×9 with 10 mines. Its clues teach the core logic without adding a new board shape or rule. Once that feels comfortable, try a No Guess mode if you want boards designed to avoid forced guesses, or hexagonal Minesweeper if you want to learn a different adjacency system. The exact options vary by game: there is no single ruleset shared by every Minesweeper app or site.

How classic Minesweeper works

Your objective is to open every safe cell without opening a mine. On the classic square grid, each revealed number tells you how many mines are in the eight cells touching it—including diagonals. A blank cell has no neighboring mines; some versions automatically reveal nearby cells when you open one.

A common Beginner preset is a 9×9 board containing 10 mines, as listed by Minesweepergame.org. It is a common starting point, not a universal requirement: board presets depend on the game you use.

Read numbers as local clues

Each number describes only the cells immediately around it. If a 1 touches one unopened cell, that cell must contain a mine; if all neighboring cells are already accounted for, the remaining unopened neighbors are safe. As you reveal more cells, combine overlapping clues rather than treating a number as a clue about the whole board.

Are flags required?

No. Flags are markers you can use to remember cells you suspect contain mines. A rules reference from Minesweeper Guide describes flags as annotations: winning depends on opening all safe cells, not flagging every mine. A flag records your current judgment; it does not prove that the cell is dangerous. If you find flags distracting, you can play without them.

How the beginner variants differ

Compare a mode by asking three things: does it change how boards are generated, does it change which cells count as neighbors, and does it make flags part of the win condition? In the rules described by these sources, classic play is the baseline, No Guess changes board generation, and hexagonal play changes adjacency. Flags remain useful notes rather than the objective.

Classic square grid Baseline rules; each clue counts mines in eight adjacent cells. The standard number-clue logic and optional flags. Start here to learn the fundamentals.
No Guess A particular implementation generates boards intended to be solvable through logic rather than a forced guess. The square-grid clues and adjacency described for classic play. Try it when you want to practice deduction with fewer forced guesses.
Hexagonal grid Each cell has six neighbors, so the clue system differs from the eight-neighbor square grid. The basic task of using clues to avoid mines. Try it after classic adjacency feels familiar.

No Guess: a board-generation option

“No Guess” is not a universal property of Minesweeper. Minesweeper.org’s beginner guide describes its No Guess mode as guaranteeing boards solvable through logic, while Minesweeper Guide describes a variant whose generator rejects boards requiring a guess. These are descriptions of particular implementations. Do not assume that a game labeled “classic” guarantees a logically solvable board or avoids every forced guess.

Hexagonal Minesweeper: a different clue system

On a hexagonal board, each cell has six neighbors instead of the eight around a square-grid cell. The same basic goal remains, but number clues must be read using that different geometry. Minesweeper.org’s variants page describes hexagonal boards with beginner, medium, and hard sizes. Because adjacency changes, this is a genuine rules variation—not just a different-looking board.

Adventure Mode: check the game’s own explanation

The Microsoft Minesweeper Xbox listing names Adventure Mode and describes clearing boards with logic and strategy, but it does not explain enough of the mode’s mechanics to compare its rules reliably with classic Minesweeper. Check the instructions in the current version of the game before assuming what Adventure Mode changes.

A practical learning path

  1. Start with a Beginner square grid. Choose a common preset such as 9×9 with 10 mines if your game offers it.
  2. Practice interpreting nearby clues. Count the eight surrounding cells for each number, including diagonals, and use overlapping clues to narrow down which cells are safe.
  3. Use flags only as memory aids. Place them when they help you track a suspected mine, but keep checking that your conclusions follow from the clues.
  4. Switch to No Guess if you want logic-focused boards. Confirm that the specific game says its generator avoids boards requiring a guess.
  5. Try hexagonal play when ready for a new deduction challenge. Relearn adjacency first: a hex cell has six neighbors, not eight.
