Choose Miner if you need more ore for crafting and progression; choose Geologist if you want more gems and prefer the geode-and-gem profession path. Neither is universally better: the useful choice depends on what your farm needs and which level-10 perks you want to unlock.

What do Miner and Geologist do at level 5?

The Stardew Valley Wiki lists two different Mining level-5 bonuses:

  • Miner: You receive one additional ore from each ore vein.
  • Geologist: Mining nodes have a 50% chance to produce gems in pairs. The wiki also says the effect applies to geodes spawned by breaking rocks.

In short, Miner increases ore gathered directly from veins, while Geologist improves gem output in the situations covered by its effect. The exact benefit depends on which resource you need; the listed mechanics do not establish one choice as best for every save. Stardew Valley Wiki: Mining

Which level-10 professions does each choice unlock?

Your level-5 choice determines which two professions are available at level 10. The listed effects point toward different goals:

  • Ages 13+

Level-5 choice Level-10 profession Listed effect
Miner Blacksmith Metal bars are worth 50% more. The wiki lists Copper, Iron, Gold, Iridium, and Radioactive Bars.
Miner Prospector Doubles the chance to find coal.
Geologist Excavator Doubles the chance to find all four types of geodes.
Geologist Gemologist Gems are worth 30% more; the wiki applies this to minerals and gems.

These effects are described by the Stardew Valley Wiki’s Mining page. Choose Miner if the ore-focused branch, including bar value or coal, better fits your plans. Choose Geologist if you prefer the geode or gem-and-mineral value branch. These are goal-based recommendations, not a guarantee that one path will pay off more in every playthrough.

How should you decide?

  • Pick Miner when additional ore is what you currently need most.
  • Pick Geologist when paired gems or the geode and gem-value options at level 10 are more appealing.
  • If you are undecided, compare the level-10 choices first. Use the level-5 bonus as a tie-breaker based on the resource you want now.

Can you change your profession later?

Yes. The Stardew Valley Wiki documents a respec option at the Statue of Uncertainty in the Sewers. Changing a chosen profession costs 10,000g. After selecting the skill to change, you make the new profession choice after sleeping. That makes the decision reversible, but not free. See the wiki’s Skills page for the profession-changing details.
