To tame a Minecraft wolf, find a non-hostile wild wolf in the Overworld and use bones until the taming effect succeeds. Once tamed, a wolf follows its owner into combat, can be healed with meat, and can wear wolf armor made from armadillo scutes. To breed wolves, make two adult tamed wolves healthy, then feed each one suitable meat. The pup inherits the parents’ variant lineage, so breeding is not a way to discover a wild variant that does not already occur in the parents.
The core loop is shared between editions, but the feature arrived in Java 1.20.5 and Bedrock 1.20.80 as part of Armored Paws. Keep those version labels in mind because technical behavior and documentation can differ between Java and Bedrock.
Where wolves spawn
Wolves are wild Overworld animals. Search the following biome groups, then identify the appearance you want before using any bones. The biome controls which wolf variant you can encounter.
| Wolf variant | Native biome |
|---|---|
| Ashen | Snowy Taiga |
| Black | Old Growth Pine Taiga |
| Chestnut | Old Growth Spruce Taiga |
| Pale | Taiga |
| Rusty | Sparse Jungle |
| Snowy | Grove |
| Spotted | Savanna Plateau |
| Striped | Wooded Badlands |
| Woods | Forest |
In practical terms, check forests, groves, most taiga types, savanna plateaus, wooded badlands and sparse jungles. If you want a specific appearance, travel to its listed biome first; taming a different-looking wolf and breeding it will not create the missing variant.

How to tame a wolf
- Find a peaceful wild wolf. Do not begin by attacking it. A wolf that has become hostile cannot be tamed, and nearby pack members may join the fight.
- Carry a supply of bones. Select bones in your hotbar and use them on the wolf. Each bone has a chance to advance taming, so the number required is variable; bring extras rather than assuming one bone will work.
- Continue until taming succeeds. The successful taming effect and the wolf’s owner relationship show that the process is complete. Stop using bones once it is tamed.
- Set its follow state. Use the wolf’s sit or stand command to decide whether it remains in place or follows you. A sitting wolf does not trail you until you make it stand again.
What not to do while taming
- Do not hit the wolf, even accidentally with a weapon or tool.
- Do not let another mob’s attack turn the wolf hostile while you are trying to use bones.
- Do not assume a hostile pack can be reset immediately for taming; choose another non-hostile wolf instead.
What a tamed wolf does
A tamed wolf is linked to its owner. It follows the owner’s attacks and fights creatures that the owner attacks, making it useful as a combat companion. Use the sit/stand command before building, mining or entering a dangerous area so it does not wander into hazards or start an unwanted fight.
Mojang’s 2024 Bedrock notes document 40 health points for tamed wolves, equal to 20 hearts. Health can fall during combat, falls or other damage, so check the wolf before sending it into another encounter.

Feed meat to an injured tamed wolf to restore health. Keep feeding until its health is restored, then allow it to recover fully before breeding or taking it into a difficult fight. The meat used for healing is separate from the bones used for taming.
Wolf armor: materials, equipment and protection
Wolf armor is a dedicated wolf equipment item introduced with Armored Paws. It is crafted from armadillo scutes. Mojang describes it as protecting the wolf from most damage sources until the armor loses all durability and breaks. The armor’s visual damage increases as durability falls, giving you a warning before protection is gone.

Who can equip it
Only a tame adult wolf can wear wolf armor, and only that wolf’s owner can equip it, repair it or remove it. A wild wolf, a hostile wolf and a pup cannot be equipped.
How to equip armor
- Make sure the wolf is tamed, adult and owned by you.
- Hold the wolf armor and use it on the wolf.
- Confirm that the armor is visible on the wolf before sending it into combat.
How to repair armor
Apply armadillo scutes to the armored wolf to restore durability, or repair the armor on an anvil. Repair it when the visual damage becomes obvious rather than waiting for the item to break. A broken item no longer provides its protection.

How to dye wolf armor
Wolf armor can be dyed in the same general way as leather armor. Dyeing changes its appearance without changing the wolf variant. The color of the armor and the natural pattern of the wolf are separate choices.

Breeding wolves
Mojang’s concise breeding rule is: tame two wolves, feed them meat, and they produce a pup whose growth can be accelerated with more meat. The adults must be tamed and, for the documented Bedrock behavior, at full health.
Breeding procedure
- Bring two adult tamed wolves together. They must belong to you; untamed wild wolves cannot be used for this process.
- Heal both adults completely. Feed meat first if either wolf has lost health. On Bedrock’s documented behavior, full health is required before breeding.
- Feed each wolf an eligible meat. Use the meat on one adult, then the other. Hearts appear when both are ready.
- Protect the pair during the brief breeding sequence. Keep hostile mobs away and avoid hitting either parent.
- Feed the pup additional meat if you want it to grow sooner. Extra meat accelerates growth; otherwise it matures normally.
Eligible breeding foods
The documented Bedrock list includes the following foods:

- Beef or cooked beef
- Mutton or cooked mutton
- Porkchop or cooked porkchop
- Rabbit or cooked rabbit
- Rotten flesh
Use the same foods for the adults’ breeding interaction and for accelerating the pup’s growth. If hearts do not appear, check that both animals are adults, tamed, alive, close enough to interact and fully healed.
How wolf variants pass to pups
The pup remains within the parents’ variant lineage. Breeding is therefore a way to expand your pack from variants you already found, not a random-appearance system for unlocking a new biome’s wolf.

For a complete collection, plan the trips first: locate and tame at least one wolf in each native biome listed above, then breed those tamed animals at a safe base. Keep a written label or separate enclosure for each appearance so you do not accidentally lose track of which adults can reproduce a desired lineage.

The practical sequence—find a wolf, tame it with bones, feed meat for healing or breeding, and use scutes for armor—is shared. When a behavior matters to a technical build, server or farm, check the release notes for the edition and version running your world rather than assuming that a Java detail applies identically to Bedrock.

The wolf will not tame
- Confirm it is still non-hostile. If you or another player struck it, choose a different wolf.
- Keep using bones; the required number is random rather than fixed.
- Make sure you are interacting with the wolf itself and not placing or using the bone on a nearby block.
The wolf attacks unexpectedly
Tamed wolves follow their owner’s attacks. Avoid swinging at neutral mobs near friendly animals, and make the wolf sit before precision work, trading, building or exploring a crowded area.
The wolf is too weak to breed
Feed it meat until its health is restored, then heal the second parent as well. On Bedrock, both tamed adults need full health for the documented breeding behavior.

The armor disappeared
Check its durability. Wolf armor protects only while it has durability remaining; once depleted, it breaks. Repair with armadillo scutes on the equipped wolf or use an anvil before the next fight.
Shears do not remove the armor
Only the wolf’s owner can shear it, and the target must be an armored tamed adult. Verify that you are using shears on the wolf rather than on a nearby block or animal.
A safe wolf-collection setup
A small, enclosed base makes variant collecting and breeding easier. Create separate pens or clearly marked areas for each appearance, keep spare bones for taming trips, store meat for healing and breeding, and reserve armadillo scutes for armor repairs. Sit wolves before opening gates or transporting other animals, and leave newly tamed adults at full health before starting a breeding cycle.
Quick Recap
For a reliable expedition checklist, carry:
- Extra bones, because taming attempts vary.
- Several kinds of meat for healing, breeding and pup growth.
- Armadillo scutes or repaired wolf armor for combat trips.
- Shears if you may need to remove armor in the field.
- Building blocks and a temporary enclosure for a newly found variant.
