Witch huts generate in swamp biomes. In Java Edition, the quickest locator is /locate structure swamp_hut; Bedrock Edition can use /locate structure temple, which may return a witch hut as the nearest temple type. Witches have 26 health, attack with splash potions, and can heal themselves. Keep your distance, use a bow or direct weapon damage, and do not waste poison or weakness potions: witches are immune to poison and those effects do not work on them.
This guide explains how to identify and reach a hut, what witches drop, how to clear one safely, and which conditions matter when turning a hut into a farm.

A witch hut is a small spruce-wood structure that generates in a swamp biome. It has no door and includes a front porch, making it recognizable even when terrain or foliage partly hides it. The structure itself is useful as a landmark, but its real value is the designated spawning area around it: under the right conditions, witches can spawn there more predictably than in an ordinary swamp.
Generation is tied to the swamp biome, not to plains, forests, rivers, or other nearby terrain. A hut can appear near biome borders, so check the biome surrounding the structure rather than assuming every nearby block belongs to the swamp. If your goal is a witch-exclusive farm, the entire hut must be inside a swamp; a hut that crosses into another biome does not provide the same exclusive spawning behavior.

How to recognize one
- Spruce-wood walls and roof.
- A compact house with a small front porch.
- No normal door.
- Generation in a swamp biome.
Witches can spawn in the hut’s designated area even while you are exploring. Light the area or remove the structure if you are only collecting the hut as a landmark and do not want hostile spawns there.
How to find a witch hut
Java Edition: use the structure locator
With commands available, stand in the world where you want to search and run:
Recommended Free Tools
/locate structure swamp_hut
- Open chat and enter the command exactly as shown.
- Read the returned coordinates for the nearest swamp hut.
- Travel to those coordinates, using a safe route and suitable food and armor.
- Confirm that the structure and its spawning area are actually in a swamp before planning a farm.
The command identifies the nearest matching structure from your search position. It does not teleport you, clear hostile mobs, or prepare the site for construction.
Bedrock Edition: use the temple structure category
Bedrock Edition uses a broader structure category for this search:
/locate structure temple
The nearest result can be a temple type that includes a witch hut. Because the result is a category rather than a witch-hut-only identifier, verify the destination in person before committing resources to a build. If the command returns another temple structure, run the search from a different location or explore swamp biomes manually.
If commands are unavailable
Search swamp biomes on foot, by boat, or from an elevated vantage point. The hut’s spruce construction contrasts with the swamp’s water, mud, and vegetation, and the front porch is often visible across open water. Mark coordinates as soon as you find one so you can return after gathering building materials.

For a simple encounter
- Approach from an angle that gives you cover, rather than walking directly through the porch opening.
- Place lights around the hut and its surrounding ground if you want to prevent future witches from appearing there.
- Clear nearby hostile mobs so you can identify the witch’s potion effects and keep an escape route open.
- Collect drops only after the area is secure; glass bottles and other small items can be hard to see in swamp water.
For a farm site
Do not light the designated spawning area. Instead, map the hut’s boundaries, confirm that the complete hut lies in a swamp, and reserve room for the collection and transport system. Lighting the wrong blocks can stop the farm from producing witches, while leaving caves or nearby dark areas untreated can divert hostile-mob spawning away from your platforms.
Witch health, attacks, and behavior
Health and ranged attacks
A witch has 26 health. It is a ranged hostile mob that throws splash potions rather than relying on melee attacks. A single throw can affect an area, so standing close to the witch or approaching through a one-block-wide path makes it easier for several effects to overlap.
Self-healing
Witches can drink beneficial potions to recover. A fight that appears nearly finished can therefore last longer if you pause between attacks or lose line of sight. Keep pressure on the target with repeated weapon hits, but do so from a position where you can retreat when a potion is thrown.
Effects that do not work
Poison potions and weakness potions are ineffective against witches. Witches are immune to poison, and weakness is not a useful offensive plan against a mob that attacks at range. Use direct weapon damage or a harming potion instead.
How to kill a witch safely
1. Set up a retreat before the first shot
Identify solid cover, a doorway, or a raised block that you can reach without crossing the witch’s line of fire. Keep food in your hotbar and remove waterlogged obstacles that could slow movement. A clear retreat route matters more than a complicated combat loadout because splash effects punish hesitation.
2. Start at range
A bow lets you damage the witch while reducing the chance that its splash potion catches you. Fire from behind cover, step out only long enough to shoot, and move sideways rather than advancing in a straight line. If you use another ranged weapon, apply the same principle: short exposures and a protected fallback position.
3. Read the potion threat
Watch the witch’s arm and the projectile trajectory. Do not stand still while waiting for an opening, and do not chase directly behind the witch if a thrown potion can land at your feet. When fighting near the hut, use the walls and porch supports to break line of sight between throws.

4. Finish with direct damage
If the witch reaches close range or your ammunition runs low, use a sword or another direct weapon while circling out of the splash radius. Harming potions are a documented alternative to weapon damage, but poison and weakness are not. Strike, step away, and re-establish distance instead of remaining in front of the target.
5. Protect against mistakes
- Wear armor appropriate to your current progression.
- Carry a shield for incoming threats while repositioning, but do not treat it as immunity to splash effects.
- Bring enough food to recover between attacks.
- Clear nearby hostile mobs before starting if the hut is in a crowded swamp.
- Keep a second route away from the water in case the first path is blocked.
There is no single guaranteed combat loadout established for every difficulty, edition, or equipment level. The reliable principles are distance, cover, direct damage, and an escape route.
What witches drop
A normal witch drop pool contains seven item types. The exact amount from an individual kill varies, and the farm tutorial’s stated frequency rule is more useful than treating every item as equally likely.
| Drop | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| Redstone | Guaranteed to drop in Minecraft 1.21 and later, according to the cited witch-farming guidance. |
| Glowstone dust | Normal witch drop. |
| Sugar | Normal witch drop. |
| Gunpowder | Normal witch drop. |
| Glass bottles | Normal witch drop. |
| Spider eyes | Normal witch drop. |
| Sticks | Normal drop that occurs twice as often as each of the other listed normal items. |
The potion a witch is drinking
A witch may also drop the potion it is currently using, usually an Instant Health potion, when it is killed under the relevant drop condition. This is separate from the normal seven-item pool, and the available evidence does not establish a universal chance for every edition or situation.
Improving output with Looting
A Looting-enchanted weapon improves drop chances and overall output. It does not change the witch’s health, make poison effective, or remove the need to control splash-potions during the fight.
Can a witch hut become a farm?
Yes. A hut can support a dedicated witch farm, but the design is not a universal copy-and-paste build. Java and Bedrock use different spawning and collection behavior, so follow a design labeled for your edition rather than moving platform dimensions from one edition to the other.
Required spawning conditions
- Light level: witches can spawn in the hut’s designated area at light level 7 or lower.
- Biome coverage: the whole hut must be inside a swamp for witches to be the only mobs able to spawn in that small hut area.
- Platform limit: one hut supports a maximum of three spawning platforms.
- Spawn-proofing: nearby caves, shorelines, and other dark spaces can absorb hostile-mob attempts and reduce farm rates.
These rules explain why a hut that looks correctly positioned can still produce poorly. Raising the light level on a platform prevents spawning; allowing the structure to overlap another biome removes the exclusive witch-spawn advantage; and adding a fourth platform does not create a fourth valid hut platform.

Edition-aware construction workflow
- Verify the edition. Record whether the world is Java or Bedrock before selecting a tutorial or redstone layout.
- Confirm the biome. Check that the entire hut footprint and its designated spawning area are in swamp terrain.
- Mark the hut’s spawning box. Preserve the valid area and identify the maximum of three platform positions supported by the hut.
- Build platforms at light level 7 or lower. Keep decorative or collection lighting away from blocks where witches must spawn.
- Control other hostile spawns. Spawn-proof nearby caves and surfaces so attempts are concentrated in the hut’s platforms.
- Install collection and transport. Use an edition-specific system to move witches or their drops into a safe kill and storage area.
- Test before finishing the exterior. Confirm that witches appear, reach the collection point, and produce the expected items before spending time on walls, roofs, or decoration.
Why farm tutorials disagree
Two apparently conflicting layouts may both be correct because Java and Bedrock differ in spawning, pathfinding, and redstone behavior. A tutorial that does not name its edition is incomplete for practical building purposes. Treat platform counts and the light-level requirement as the shared constraints, then follow the dimensions, transport method, and kill chamber for your edition.

Troubleshooting common problems
No witches are spawning
- Check the platform light level; it must be 7 or lower.
- Make sure you did not place lights on or above the spawning area.
- Verify that the hut is entirely in a swamp.
- Confirm that you are using the correct edition-specific platform arrangement.
- Spawn-proof nearby caves and dark surfaces that may be consuming hostile-mob attempts.
The locator sent me to the wrong structure
On Bedrock, /locate structure temple searches a broad temple category. Inspect the destination rather than assuming every result is a witch hut. Search again from another position if the nearest result is a different temple type.
The witch keeps recovering
Do not pause after reducing its health. Maintain ranged pressure or close the fight with direct weapon damage while staying outside the splash radius. A retreat that breaks line of sight for too long gives the witch time to drink a beneficial potion.
The farm produces other mobs
Recheck biome coverage and spawn-proofing. A hut that is not completely inside a swamp does not provide the witch-only spawning behavior, and unlit nearby spaces can attract mobs away from the intended platforms.

Inspect each platform’s light level, the number of platforms, and the collection path. The hut supports no more than three spawning platforms, so adding more surfaces inside the same hut area will not solve the problem. Test the farm while remaining close enough for the area to be active, then verify that drops are not being lost in water, lava, or an uncollected kill chamber.
Practical checklist
- Find a swamp hut with the Java or Bedrock command appropriate to your edition.
- Confirm the structure’s biome before planning a farm.
- Bring ranged damage, food, armor, and a retreat route.
- Do not use poison or weakness potions against witches.
- Expect splash attacks and possible self-healing.
- Remember the normal drops: redstone, glowstone dust, sugar, gunpowder, glass bottles, spider eyes, and sticks.
- In version 1.21 and later, redstone is guaranteed according to the cited farming guidance.
- For a farm, keep spawning blocks at light level 7 or lower and use no more than three platforms.
- Use a farm design written for your edition.
The Bottom Line
For a quick kill, locate a swamp hut, fight from cover with ranged or direct damage, and avoid poison and weakness. For renewable supplies, preserve the hut’s spawning area at light level 7 or lower, keep the entire structure in a swamp, use no more than three platforms, and build an edition-specific farm.
