Use /weather clear, /weather rain, or /weather thunder to change Minecraft weather. You need cheats enabled in Bedrock, commands enabled in a Java single-player world, or sufficient permissions on a server or Realm. Bedrock durations use game ticks: 20 ticks equal one second, so /weather thunder 600 requests 30 seconds.
Rain changes to snow in cold biomes, and thunder changes to a blizzard. If weather keeps changing before a timed command finishes, set doweathercycle to false first.
What weather can Minecraft show?
Minecraft has three command-selectable weather states: clear, rain, and thunder. The visible result depends partly on the biome where the command is used.

A rain command does not force liquid rain in every location. Snow in a cold biome is the expected equivalent of rain there. Likewise, thunder in a cold biome is rendered as a blizzard rather than ordinary rainfall.

Command reference
Enter commands in chat with the leading slash. The command name is shared by Java and Bedrock, but permission labels and some duration parsing differ, so use the edition-specific instructions below.

How to change weather in Bedrock Edition
Enable the required permission
- Open the world settings.
- Turn on Allow Cheats.
- Return to the world and open chat.
- Type a weather command, including the initial slash, and submit it.
Enabling cheats in a Bedrock single-player world permanently disables achievement unlocking for that world, even if you later turn cheats off. Decide whether the weather change is worth that trade-off before enabling the setting.

For clear skies, enter /weather clear. To start precipitation, enter /weather rain. To start a storm, enter /weather thunder. Bedrock’s command suggestions can complete the weather type and help expose accepted arguments as you type.
Use a fixed duration
Bedrock expresses the optional duration in game ticks. Since 20 ticks equal one second, multiply the number of seconds you want by 20:
- 10 seconds:
/weather rain 200 - 30 seconds:
/weather thunder 600 - 5 minutes:
/weather clear 6000
The 600-tick thunder example is documented by Microsoft as a 30-second command. A duration without a unit is not seconds; it is ticks.

How to change weather in Java Edition
Enable commands in a single-player world
- When creating the world, enable Allow Commands.
- For an existing single-player world, open the world options and enable the command setting available there.
- Open chat and enter the desired weather command with a leading slash.
Use permissions on a server or Realm
On multiplayer worlds, the setting is controlled by server or Realm permissions rather than your local single-player menu. You need the operator or permission level required by that world. If the command is rejected, ask the owner or administrator to grant the needed permission or run the command for you.

The command name is the same as in Bedrock, but duration parsing can differ by edition and version. If you are unsure about an argument, type /weather and use the game’s autocomplete instead of guessing. The suggestions show what your current Java installation accepts.
How to keep Minecraft weather clear
A weather command changes the current state, but the world’s weather cycle can change it again. For a controlled period, disable the cycle before applying the timed weather command.
Bedrock example: lock clear weather for five minutes
- Open chat.
- Run
/gamerule doweathercycle false. - Run
/weather clear 6000.
Here, 6,000 ticks equals 300 seconds, or five minutes. The weather-cycle rule prevents the normal cycle from overriding the selected duration during that period.
Lock rain or thunder instead
Use the same order with a different weather type:
/gamerule doweathercycle false
/weather rain 6000/gamerule doweathercycle false
/weather thunder 600Use the duration that matches your goal. The thunder example lasts 30 seconds because it uses 600 ticks.

Restore normal weather cycling
When you want the world to resume its ordinary weather changes, set the gamerule back to true:
/gamerule doweathercycle trueThe gamerule affects the world until you change it again, so remember to restore it if you only needed a temporary lock for a build, recording, or event.
How to check which weather is active
Bedrock supports /weather query. Run it in chat to have the game report the current weather state. This is useful after a command appears to do nothing, after moving between biomes, or when checking whether another player or a gamerule changed the conditions.
Java and Bedrock can show different visual results for the same state in different biomes. Confirm both the reported state and your location before treating a rain command as failed.
Rain versus thunder: what is the difference?

Thunder is not merely a louder rain setting: it is a separate weather state. A cold-biome thunderstorm is also represented differently from a normal-biome thunderstorm, which is why the screen may show a blizzard rather than rainfall.

Choosing the right command for your goal
“How do I stop the rain right now?”
Use /weather clear. If you need the result to persist for a known period, disable the cycle first and add a Bedrock tick duration, such as /gamerule doweathercycle false followed by /weather clear 6000.
“How do I make it rain?”
Use /weather rain. In a cold biome, the command correctly produces snow instead. For a defined Bedrock period, append a tick count, for example /weather rain 200 for 10 seconds.
“How do I make it thunder?”
Use /weather thunder. The documented Bedrock example /weather thunder 600 requests 30 seconds. In a cold biome, expect a blizzard visual.
“How do I keep weather clear?”
Turn off the weather cycle with /gamerule doweathercycle false, then apply /weather clear or a timed clear command. Re-enable the cycle with /gamerule doweathercycle true when you want normal changes again.
Troubleshooting weather commands
The game says I do not have permission
- Bedrock single-player: return to world settings and enable Allow Cheats. Remember that this permanently disables achievements for that world.
- Java single-player: enable Allow Commands in the world-creation or existing-world options.
- Server or Realm: obtain the required operator or permission level from the owner or administrator.
The command is unknown or syntax is rejected
Check that the command starts with /, then type /weather and inspect autocomplete. Java and Bedrock share the command name but can differ in duration handling and permission labels. Use the syntax displayed by your edition rather than copying an argument that your version does not suggest.

Weather changes back before the duration ends
The weather cycle may still be active. Run /gamerule doweathercycle false before the timed weather command. This is the documented Bedrock approach when a selected duration must be respected.

Rain produced snow
That is normal in a cold biome. The rain weather state is rendered as snow there; the command itself did not fail.
Thunder produced a blizzard
Thunder in a cold biome is rendered as a blizzard. In a non-cold biome, the same state appears as rain with thunder and lightning.
The duration is much shorter or longer than expected
On Bedrock, count ticks rather than seconds: 20 ticks equal one second. Divide a tick value by 20 to convert it to seconds, or multiply seconds by 20 before entering the command. For example, 600 ticks ÷ 20 = 30 seconds.
I used a command without a duration and the result did not last as expected
On Bedrock, Microsoft documents a random 300–900-second duration when the optional duration is omitted. Use an explicit tick count when the length matters, and disable the weather cycle if another automatic change would interfere.

One-time clear weather
- Confirm you have the required permission.
- Enter
/weather clear. - If the weather returns later, use the weather-cycle procedure rather than repeating the command indefinitely.
Thirty-second thunderstorm in Bedrock
- Enable Allow Cheats if this is a single-player Bedrock world.
- Enter
/weather thunder 600. - If the cycle overrides the selected period, run

Five-minute clear period in Bedrock
