For a small, vanilla Minecraft Java server in 2026, begin with a VPS offering about 4 GB of RAM, two modern vCPU cores (or an equivalent CPU allocation), strong single-thread performance, SSD or NVMe storage, a reachable public address, firewall control, and the Java version required by your server software. Move to 6–8 GB for more players or plugins, and 8–12 GB or more for substantial modpacks. These are practical starting points, not official player limits: world generation, simulation distance, entities, mods and backups can change the requirement quickly.

A Minecraft VPS runs the server process without a gaming desktop or graphics card. The server’s main tick depends much more on fast per-core CPU performance, adequate memory headroom and low storage latency than on GPU specifications.

What a Minecraft VPS actually needs

A VPS must run the dedicated server process, the Java runtime (for Java Edition), the operating system and any supporting services such as monitoring, a control panel or backup jobs. It also needs a network path that lets players reach the configured server port. The resources shown in a VPS plan are not all available to the Minecraft heap: the operating system, JVM native memory, file cache and other services need room as well.

Java server versus Java client requirements

Minecraft’s client requirements are often mistaken for server requirements. Mojang’s July 21, 2026 Java client guidance targets 1080p at 30 frames per second with 8 GB of RAM and a four-core processor; systems using integrated graphics are listed with 12 GB of RAM. The 1080p/60 FPS recommendation lists 16 GB of RAM. Those figures describe rendering a game on a player’s computer. A headless VPS does not render frames and therefore does not need a gaming GPU or the client’s graphics memory.

The dedicated Java server software is free and needs a compatible Java installation. Players outside the VPS may also require firewall and port-forwarding configuration before they can connect. The server’s workload is simulation: keeping the world tick on schedule, loading and generating chunks, processing entities and redstone, saving data and responding to player traffic.

Bedrock is a separate server target

Bedrock Dedicated Server has its own compatibility list. Mojang lists an Intel Core i3-3210 or AMD A8-7600-equivalent processor, 4 GB of RAM and approximately 180 MB to 1 GB of storage for the server package. Linux deployments require Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or newer; Windows deployments require Windows 10 build 15063 or newer or Windows Server 2016 or newer. Broadband connectivity is required, and larger worlds or more players need additional resources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bedrock package-size figure is not a recommendation for the total disk space of a live world. World data, logs, backups and temporary files can become much larger, so size the disk for the complete operating environment.

Practical VPS sizes by workload

The following ranges are engineering starting points. They are not Mojang-certified limits and should be validated with the actual seed, mods, plugins and player behavior you expect.

Workload Practical starting VPS Typical reasons to upgrade
Small vanilla Java, about 1–5 active players 4 GB RAM; two vCPU or an equivalent allocation; modern high-single-thread CPU; SSD/NVMe; public address and firewall control Exploration-heavy generation, large view or simulation distances, backups and map tools
Vanilla or light plugins, about 5–15 players 6 GB RAM; strong CPU allocation; fast SSD/NVMe; scheduled snapshots or backups Entity farms, redstone activity, higher distances and concurrent chunk generation
Modpack or plugin-heavy, about 10–20 players 8–12 GB RAM; high single-thread performance plus additional cores for supporting work; NVMe and generous disk headroom Modpack footprint, pregeneration, large entity counts, frequent saves and JVM overhead
Larger community or multiple worlds 12–16 GB or more; dedicated or high-priority CPU; NVMe; automated backups, monitoring and potentially separate proxy or database services Concurrent worlds, proxy layers, peak player bursts and uptime requirements

There is no universal formula such as “one gigabyte per player.” Two servers with the same player count can have very different loads: ten players spread across newly generated terrain may be harder to serve than twenty players staying in an established area, while an entity-heavy farm can consume CPU with only a few people online.

CPU: prioritize the main server thread

Minecraft’s primary tick loop is sensitive to per-core performance. Prefer a recent processor with high clock speed and high instructions-per-cycle performance over a plan that advertises many slow or heavily shared cores. Additional vCPUs help with tasks such as compression, networking, garbage collection, pregeneration and backup jobs, but they do not compensate for a weak core handling the main tick.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to ask a VPS host

  • Which processor generation and virtualization platform back the plan?
  • Are vCPUs dedicated, capped, or routinely oversold?
  • Can the host show CPU-steal or contention metrics when neighboring tenants are busy?
  • Is there a simple upgrade path to a higher-priority or dedicated allocation?

A nominal “four vCPU” plan can perform worse than a well-provisioned two-vCPU plan if the former is frequently contended. During testing, watch tick time and CPU steal rather than relying only on the advertised core count.

RAM and Java heap sizing

RAM must cover more than -Xmx. Reserve space for the operating system, JVM native allocations, class metadata, thread stacks, filesystem cache, monitoring, panels and backup utilities. Allocating every advertised gigabyte to Minecraft can cause swapping or an out-of-memory failure even when the heap itself appears healthy.

How much memory to start with

  • 4 GB VPS: suitable as a starting point for a small vanilla Java server when other services are minimal.
  • 6 GB VPS: a useful middle tier for several players, light plugins and moderate distances.
  • 8–12 GB VPS: a practical range for many modpacks or plugin-heavy communities, with enough reserve for JVM overhead.
  • 12–16 GB or more: appropriate when running multiple worlds, large modpacks, proxy layers or larger concurrent populations.

Minecraft Help warns that mismatched memory allocation can cause crashes, lag or stuttering. Its guidance suggests 2 GB allocated on systems with 4 GB or less total RAM, while systems with 8 GB or more can increase allocation for better performance. That guidance concerns the allocation setting; it does not mean a 4 GB VPS should dedicate all 4 GB to the Java process.

Set deliberate heap limits

Paper’s example launch command is java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui. Matching the initial and maximum heap can make memory behavior more predictable, but the values must fit the total VPS. On a 4 GB machine, using a 4G maximum leaves no safe operating margin; choose a lower heap or a larger VPS. Change the heap only after checking actual usage and garbage-collection behavior.

Java versions and server software

The Java runtime must match the server build. Paper’s compatibility matrix lists Java 21 for Paper 1.20 through 1.21.11 and Java 25 for Paper 26.1 and newer. The current Paper documentation also states, “Paper requires at least Java 25 to run.” Treat the release matrix as authoritative for the exact build you install rather than assuming the newest JDK works with every older server.

  1. Identify the Minecraft and Paper version you intend to run.
  2. Check that version’s required Java major release.
  3. Confirm the VPS lets you install or select that JDK instead of forcing a different system version.
  4. Verify the runtime with java -version before starting the server.
  5. Keep a tested JDK package available when upgrading or rolling back the server.

For a Paper installation, a basic command is java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar paper.jar --nogui; adjust both heap values for your available memory and workload. The command does not remove the need to accept Minecraft’s EULA or configure the server files.

Storage: SSD or NVMe, with room for history

Chunk generation, region-file saves, startup and plugin operations all create disk activity. SSD storage is a sensible minimum; NVMe is preferable when the server generates terrain while players are online or when several services perform I/O at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calculate capacity for the operating system, the server jar, worlds, modpacks, logs, maps, temporary files and multiple backup generations. Keep free space available so a world save or backup cannot fill the filesystem. Ask whether advertised storage is local SSD/NVMe or network-backed storage, and whether performance is capped by I/O quotas.

Backups are part of the storage requirement

Confirm how often snapshots run, how many versions are retained, where copies are stored and how a restore is performed. A backup kept only on the same VPS does not protect against disk failure or account loss. Schedule a world save or controlled shutdown according to the server software’s recommendations before copying live data, and test a restore before you need one.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Network, address and port requirements

Outside players need a stable, publicly reachable address and a firewall rule that permits the server’s configured port. Paper’s documented defaults include server-port=25565, max-players=20, view-distance=10, simulation-distance=10 and entity-broadcast-range-percentage=100. If you change the port in server.properties, open the same port in the VPS firewall and any upstream network firewall.

Before inviting players, test connectivity from a network that is not the VPS itself. Check that the address is not behind carrier-grade NAT, that inbound traffic is permitted by the host’s policy and that DNS, if used, points to the current address. Choose a data-center region close to most players; routing quality at busy times matters more than geographic distance alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network questions for a provider

  • Is a public IPv4 address included, or can a reachable address be assigned?
  • Can you configure inbound and outbound firewall rules?
  • Are game traffic, automated backups and mod downloads permitted?
  • What DDoS protections and traffic limits apply?
  • Is support available in the region and time zone where you will operate the server?

Server settings that change resource demand

Start conservatively with view distance and simulation distance. View distance controls how much terrain is sent to clients; simulation distance determines how far active game logic runs. Raising either increases CPU, memory and network work. Paper’s default for each is 10, but a lower value can be appropriate on a small VPS. Increase settings only after observing tick time, heap use and bandwidth during normal play.

Entity broadcast range also affects how far entities are sent to players. Paper documents a default of 100 percent; reducing it can lower network and client work, while reducing it too far may make distant entities appear to vanish. Treat this as a measured performance trade-off rather than a universal optimization.

How to choose between VPS offers

Comparison area What a good offer should make clear
JDK control Ability to run the Java major version required by the selected Minecraft or Paper release
CPU quality Processor model or generation, contention policy and upgrade options
Memory headroom Enough RAM beyond the heap for the OS, JVM and support services
Storage SSD/NVMe type, usable capacity, I/O limits and room for backup retention
Address and firewall Public reachability, configurable rules and permission to open the configured port
Network policy DDoS handling, traffic limits and acceptable mod/plugin download activity
Region Low-latency routing to the majority of players, verified at busy times when possible
Operations Snapshots, off-server backups, restore procedures, monitoring and support response

Deployment checklist

  1. Select Java or Bedrock first; their software, runtime and compatibility requirements differ.
  2. Choose a VPS tier from the workload table, leaving memory for the OS and services.
  3. Install the required operating system and JDK, then verify the Java version if applicable.
  4. Upload the server software, accept the EULA and create the initial configuration.
  5. Set server-port, view-distance, simulation-distance and player limits deliberately.
  6. Open the matching firewall port and test from an external connection.
  7. Run a representative test: several players exploring, using farms and generating new chunks.
  8. Enable scheduled backups, off-server retention and monitoring before inviting a wider community.

Monitor before upgrading

Measure the server under the workload that causes complaints. Track tick time or TPS, per-core CPU use, CPU steal, heap occupancy, garbage-collection pauses, disk latency, free disk space, network throughput and backup duration. A memory graph that stays low while tick time spikes points toward CPU contention or world activity, not automatically toward a larger heap.

Symptoms and likely fixes

  • Slow ticks during exploration: check single-thread CPU performance, CPU steal, storage latency and the chosen view or simulation distance; pregenerate terrain during a maintenance window if appropriate.
  • Crashes or stuttering after increasing memory: reduce the heap to leave OS headroom, inspect garbage collection and verify that the VPS is not swapping.
  • Players cannot connect: confirm the public address, configured port, host firewall, operating-system firewall and any upstream filtering.
  • Lag appears only around farms: inspect entity counts, redstone activity and entity broadcast settings before simply adding RAM.
  • Backups fill the disk: set retention limits, move archives off the VPS and monitor free space.

When 4 GB is enough—and when it is not

Four gigabytes is a reasonable entry point for a small vanilla Java world with a few active players, conservative distances and minimal extra software. It is not a promise that every 4 GB plan supports a fixed number of players. Modpacks, large plugin stacks, frequent new-chunk generation, high simulation distance and entity-heavy builds can exceed that tier quickly.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If monitoring shows the heap is consistently near its limit and the CPU remains comfortable, move to a larger memory tier. If heap use is moderate but ticks are late, choose a faster or less-contended CPU and review distances, entities and world generation. If disk latency or backup activity causes stalls, move to faster storage or schedule I/O-heavy jobs outside peak play. Scaling the resource that is actually saturated is more reliable than buying the largest plan by default.
