Vexes do not normally spawn on their own. In Minecraft survival, an Evoker creates them with a summoning spell, most often in a woodland mansion or during a raid. Each spell produces three Vexes. They can pass through walls and floors, last only about two minutes, and the cited woodland-mansion guide says they drop nothing when killed. The reliable response is to locate and kill the Evoker first, use a bow when you have a clear shot, keep a shield ready for close attacks, and retreat into open space if a swarm becomes unmanageable.
What a Vex is
A Vex is a small hostile flying mob tied to an Evoker. It is not the sort of ordinary Overworld creature that appears from a routine darkness check or a general hostile-mob farm. The survival trigger is an Evoker’s Vex-summoning spell.
Mojang’s official Evoker material identifies the Evoker as an illager that summons Vexes. In ordinary Minecraft survival, the encounters that matter are woodland mansions and raids. The same Evoker may create more than one group over the course of a fight, which is why leaving the summoner alive can turn a manageable encounter into several attacks from different directions.
The distinction matters when you are trying to diagnose an encounter. If Vexes appear while you are exploring a mansion or defending a village, look for an Evoker rather than searching for a hidden natural-spawn location. If a Vex was created with a command or a spawn egg, its behavior can differ from an Evoker-summoned one, particularly around lifespan and equipment; those cases should not be treated as identical to a normal survival encounter.

How Vexes spawn in survival
Woodland mansions
Woodland mansions are one of the principal places to meet Evokers. When an Evoker begins its summoning spell, three Vexes are created for that cast. Mansion rooms and corridors make the event especially dangerous because the Vexes can approach from angles you cannot see and can cross the building’s barriers.
Raids
Evokers can also appear during raids. A raid gives you less control over the timing and direction of the fight: other raiders may be active, the village is spread across open and enclosed areas, and the Evoker can continue casting while you reposition. The same basic rule applies—identify the Evoker and stop it before spending time trading hits with every Vex.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Three Vexes per summoning spell
One Evoker spell summons three Vexes. That is a per-cast figure, not a guarantee that only three will exist for the entire encounter. If an Evoker remains alive and gets another opportunity to cast, another group can appear. Killing the summoner therefore limits the source of new Vexes; it does not necessarily remove Vexes that are already in the area.
They can pass through blocks
Vexes can fly through blocks, including walls and floors. A closed room, a thin barrier, or a staircase is not dependable protection once a Vex has been summoned. A retreat that blocks a normal melee mob may still leave a Vex able to reach you. Favor locations where you can see incoming attackers and move around them instead of relying on a wall to stop them.
They are temporary summons
Summoned Vexes are temporary. The cited combat tutorial and woodland-mansion guide put their lifespan at about two minutes. That timer is strategically important: you do not always have to win a direct exchange. If the Evoker is already dead and you are outnumbered, creating distance and surviving the remaining period can be safer than chasing every Vex through a building.

| Source | An Evoker’s summoning spell | Natural, independent Vex spawning is not the practical survival trigger described by the cited guides. |
| Group size | Three Vexes per Evoker spell | An Evoker can create another group if it remains alive and casts again. |
| Movement | Flight through blocks, including walls and floors | Do not assume a solid barrier prevents contact. |
| Lifespan | About two minutes for summoned Vexes | The cited tutorials describe this as temporary summon behavior; command- or spawn-egg-created entities may not follow the same rule. |
| Hard-difficulty attack | One cited guide reports up to 13 HP, or 6.5 hearts, of Vex attack damage on Hard | This is a cited difficulty-specific attack figure, not a universal health value for every edition and release. |
| Drops | The cited woodland-mansion guide says killed Vexes drop nothing | Edition-specific equipment behavior can complicate unusual cases; do not plan an ordinary survival fight as a source of loot. |
| Edition differences | Behavior and values are not identical across Java and Bedrock | The broad reference notes a possible iron-sword drop in Bedrock and edition-specific idle behavior around the Evoker, but it does not provide a complete current version matrix. |
The damage figure deserves particular care. “Up to 13 HP” in the cited Hard-difficulty reference describes the attack’s potential damage in that context—6.5 hearts—not the Vex’s own health pool. It should not be copied into a general all-editions stat line without naming the difficulty, edition and game version.
Why killing the Evoker comes first
The Evoker is the encounter’s renewable threat. A Vex already in the world may still attack after the Evoker dies, but removing the summoner prevents further Vex waves from that source. The combat tutorial identifies killing the Evoker as the best general strategy for exactly this reason.
This priority also improves your positioning. Shooting or chasing individual Vexes first can keep you exposed while the Evoker continues casting. A direct route to the summoner is not always safe, so use the following order:
- Find the casting Evoker. Treat the spell and its visual or audio cue as a signal to stop tunnel-visioning on a single Vex.
- Create a line of sight. Move to a place where a bow can reach the Evoker without forcing you into a blind corner.
- Attack the Evoker immediately. Ranged damage lets you work on the source while maintaining space from the flying mobs.
- Reposition rather than stand still. The Evoker can continue using its spells while you move, so change angles and avoid becoming surrounded.
- Deal with survivors only after the source is stopped. Once no further Vexes are being summoned, decide whether to fight the remaining group or outlast it.
Step-by-step method for beating Vexes
1. Prepare before entering the encounter
- Keep a bow or another reliable ranged option available. Distance gives you a way to damage the Evoker before the Vexes reach melee range.
- Carry a shield and be ready to raise it. The mansion guide specifically recommends a shield because Vexes are small and difficult to hit consistently.
- Prefer an open area or a route with multiple exits. You need visibility and room to sidestep flying attackers; a narrow dead end removes both advantages.
- Know your retreat path before the spell begins. A planned exit is more useful than discovering halfway through the fight that your chosen room has only one doorway.
2. Break the line of attack
When the Vexes close in, keep moving rather than backing into a wall. Their ability to pass through blocks means that a wall does not reliably break pursuit. Step into an area where you can watch their approach from more than one direction, then use the shield when an attack is committed.

3. Shoot the Evoker when it is exposed
Use the bow for the Evoker whenever you have a clear shot. You do not need to stand still to make progress; fire, change position, and use the next opening. The objective is to stop additional summons, not to win a damage race against every Vex at once.
4. Time shield use and counterattacks
A shield is most useful when a Vex is actually committing to an attack. Raise it as the Vex closes, absorb the immediate threat, and counterattack during the opening rather than swinging continuously while the mob is moving around you. Because the target is small and airborne, deliberate attacks are more dependable than frantic ones.

5. Decide whether the remaining Vexes are worth fighting
After the Evoker is dead, count the practical risk rather than assuming every Vex must be killed. If you have a clear shot and enough space, finish them methodically. If several are attacking from different heights or you cannot maintain visibility, leave the area and let the temporary summons expire. The cited mansion guidance explicitly recommends fleeing and ignoring an overwhelming group because Vexes provide no ordinary drop and disappear after their short lifespan.
Where common defenses fail
“I will hide behind a wall.”
This works poorly against Vexes because they can pass through walls and floors. Use a wall only as a visual break while you relocate, not as a permanent barrier. If you cannot see the route into the room, you also cannot reliably predict where the Vex will emerge.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“I will kill the Vex nearest to me first.”
That may be necessary for immediate survival, but it is a poor overall priority while the Evoker is still casting. Every second spent chasing one target can give the summoner time to create another group. Protect yourself from the closest attack, then return attention to the Evoker.
“The Vexes must all be killed before I can leave.”
They are temporary summons, not a permanent patrol. Once the Evoker is gone, disengaging can be the correct tactic, especially in a mansion where pursuit through rooms and floors keeps you exposed. Leaving is a strategic choice, not a failure to complete the encounter.
“A raid is safe once I reach a house.”
Vexes can cross blocks, so entering a small house does not guarantee safety. During a raid, move toward visibility and multiple exits instead of assuming the nearest structure is an impenetrable shelter.
Using the strategy in a woodland mansion
Before opening a room
Approach mansion rooms with a retreat in mind. The danger is not just the Evoker’s spell; once Vexes are active, they can arrive through the room’s ceiling, floor or adjoining walls. Keep enough distance to draw a bow and avoid committing to a doorway that leaves no lateral movement.

When the spell starts inside the mansion
Do not chase a Vex into a corridor while the Evoker remains alive. Instead, locate the summoner, use a ranged attack when the corridor opens, and move back toward a larger space. If the building’s layout prevents a clear shot, temporarily withdraw to an area with better visibility, then re-engage the Evoker rather than trying to clear every flying target in sequence.
After the Evoker is dead
Check whether the remaining Vexes are still threatening your route. A shield-and-counterattack approach works when you can track them, but a retreat is often better in a crowded mansion. They have no useful drop according to the cited mansion guide, so there is no loot reason to accept unnecessary damage.
Using the strategy during a raid
Separate the summoner problem from the raid problem
A raid may contain several hostile priorities at once. The Vex problem is specifically tied to the Evoker. When one appears, mark its location and interrupt it as soon as the surrounding fight permits. Do not let the presence of other raiders persuade you to ignore a casting Evoker indefinitely; another Vex group can make the battlefield harder to read.

Because Vexes can pass through blocks, plan movement through open ground or spaces with broad sight lines. A village building can still provide cover from other attackers, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed Vex-proof bunker.
When the village becomes too crowded
Move away from the immediate cluster rather than trading hits in place. The goal is to regain a clear view of the Evoker or to survive until summoned Vexes expire. Re-enter only when you can identify which threat you are addressing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “despawn” means for Vexes
For an ordinary Evoker-summoned Vex encounter, “despawn” is best understood as the summon expiring after about two minutes. It is not the same as a player killing the mob, and it does not mean every Vex disappears the instant its Evoker dies. The summoner’s death prevents new casts; existing summons still need to be defeated or outlasted.

Do not generalize that timer to every Vex created by every method. The edition reference distinguishes Evoker-summoned behavior from command- or spawn-egg-created entities, and exact rules can change between Java and Bedrock releases. If you are testing a custom map or command setup, identify how the Vex was created before relying on the survival timer.

Java and Bedrock: what can safely be compared
There is no single timeless Vex stat line that covers every Java and Bedrock release. The broad edition reference confirms differences in attack behavior, lifespan handling, equipment or drops, and idle behavior around the Evoker, but it does not establish a complete current version-by-version matrix. A guide that publishes exact numbers should name the edition and version beside each number.
| Comparison area | Safe interpretation | What to verify for a precise answer |
|---|---|---|
| Attack damage | Difficulty and edition affect the value; the cited Hard figure is up to 13 HP (6.5 hearts). | Java or Bedrock, game version and difficulty. |
| Health | Do not infer a universal health value from the cited attack figure. | The target edition’s current entity data. |
| Summon lifespan | Evoker-summoned Vexes are described as lasting about two minutes. | Whether the entity was summoned by an Evoker, command or spawn egg, plus the release. |
| Equipment and drops | The mansion guide says killed Vexes drop nothing; an edition reference notes a possible iron-sword drop in Bedrock. | Edition, version and whether the Vex spawned through normal survival mechanics. |
| Movement near the Evoker | Edition-specific idle behavior is recorded in the reference. | The exact release and the test scenario. |
For practical survival, these differences do not change the first decision: stop the Evoker, maintain visibility, use ranged damage and a shield, and disengage if the swarm is larger than you can safely control.
Why Vexes are designed to force movement
Minecraft designer Jens Bergensten explained the design intention in a 2016 Time interview: “I wanted to try something different.” He described wanting players to move instead of standing still and waiting for monsters to approach, noting that difficulty does not have to come only from giving an enemy more health or attack damage.
That design goal explains why a stationary defense feels unreliable. The Vex attacks from the air, ignores ordinary block barriers and pressures you to change position. The counterplay is movement with a purpose: move to expose the Evoker, move to open a bow shot, move to keep multiple Vexes in view, or move far enough away that the temporary summons are no longer worth engaging.

Quick Recap
A compact decision guide
- Are Vexes present? Look for the Evoker that summoned them, rather than searching for a natural spawn source.
- Is the Evoker alive? Make it the main target; another spell can create three more Vexes.
- Can you see the Evoker from a safe distance? Use the bow and keep changing position.
- Are Vexes in melee range? Raise the shield for the committed attack, then counterattack during the opening.
- Are walls being used as your only defense? Leave the enclosure; Vexes can pass through blocks.
- Is the Evoker dead but the group overwhelming? Retreat. Summoned Vexes last about two minutes and the cited mansion guide reports no drop.
- Are you playing a custom or cross-edition setup? Treat exact damage, equipment and lifespan values as version-specific instead of assuming Java and Bedrock behave identically.
