Use ordinary torches for inexpensive everyday lighting, soul torches for Nether styling and piglin deterrence, and redstone torches for signals and logic. A normal torch is crafted with coal or charcoal above a stick and provides light level 14. Soul torches use coal or charcoal, a stick, and soul sand or soul soil; they emit light level 10 and repel piglins. Redstone torches are circuit components whose main job is powering and inverting redstone devices.
Which Minecraft torch should you use?
The three torch types look related, but they solve different problems. Choosing the right one prevents wasted resources and avoids building a lighting system that does not actually control mob spawning or redstone behavior.

For a room that simply needs to be visible, start with normal torches. Choose soul torches when their Nether appearance or piglin-repelling behavior matters more than maximum brightness. Use redstone torches only when a circuit needs their signal behavior; they are not a substitute for a normal torch network.
How to craft a normal torch
The normal torch is the early-game workhorse because its recipe needs only a stick and one of two common fuel materials. Coal and charcoal are interchangeable for this recipe.

- Collect at least one stick.
- Collect coal or make charcoal.
- Open a crafting grid.
- Place the coal or charcoal directly above the stick. The recipe produces ordinary torch items.
- Move the torches into your inventory and keep additional sticks and fuel materials ready before a long mining trip.
The Minecraft Education educator guide presents this recipe in the crafting interface under the lesson “HOW DO I LIGHT UP A ROOM?” Java and Bedrock recipe books can present the recipe differently in their interfaces, so follow the arrangement shown by your edition if the recipe book is open. The ingredients remain coal or charcoal and a stick.
Plan your torch supply before mining
Torches are easy to consume faster than expected when a tunnel branches, rises, or drops. Craft a reserve rather than carrying only what is needed for the main passage. Keep spare sticks in the same chest as coal or charcoal at your base so replenishing the stack does not interrupt a mining run.
Mark the route consistently. For example, placing torches on one wall on the way into a mine and the opposite wall on the way out gives you a directional cue without adding signs. The torches still provide light, but their consistent side placement makes a maze of branches easier to navigate.
How to craft and use soul torches
A soul torch combines the normal torch materials with a Nether soul material: coal or charcoal, a stick, and soul sand or soul soil. The result emits light level 10, lower than a normal torch, and repels piglins.
- Gather coal or charcoal and a stick.
- Gather soul sand or soul soil.
- Open the crafting grid and combine the three ingredients to produce soul torches.
- Place them along Nether corridors, portals or themed rooms where their blue flame and piglin-repelling behavior are useful.
Because a soul torch is dimmer than a normal torch, inspect the finished area rather than assuming that an equal number of torches gives equal visibility. Add a brighter light source when you need a clearly lit workstation, staircase or junction.
Where soul torches make sense
- Nether corridors: The blue flame immediately distinguishes Nether routes from Overworld paths.
- Piglin-sensitive areas: Their repelling behavior can help keep piglins away from marked routes.
- Themed builds: Soul torches provide visual contrast in ruins, crypts and other dark or supernatural designs.
- Portal rooms: They create a clear visual boundary around a Nether entrance without making the room look like an ordinary base.
Do not use soul torches as your only safety measure in a complicated Nether build. Their light level is 10, and irregular terrain can leave darker recesses between apparently nearby lights.

What redstone torches do
A redstone torch is primarily a signal device. Microsoft Learn’s Guide to Redstone explains that you can power most redstone devices, including a redstone lamp, by putting a redstone torch on an adjacent block. The same guide warns that putting the torch on the lamp itself will not power it.
Power an adjacent device correctly
- Identify the block or component that should receive power.
- Place the redstone torch on a block adjacent to that component, following the orientation your circuit requires.
- Test the device. A lamp or other compatible redstone component should respond when the torch is providing power.
- If the circuit is meant to switch off, power the block carrying the torch. A powered attachment block deactivates the redstone torch.
This on/off relationship is why redstone torches are useful for inverters and compact logic. A torch can provide a signal while its attachment block is unpowered, then turn off when that block receives power. Build the circuit around that behavior instead of treating the redstone torch as a bright lamp.
Common redstone-torch mistakes
- Placing it directly on a lamp: The Microsoft guide specifically says this does not power the lamp. Move the torch to an adjacent block.
- Expecting room lighting: Redstone torches are selected for signal control, not for the efficient general illumination provided by normal torches.
- Forgetting the attachment block: Powering the block holding the torch can deactivate it, which may look like a broken torch until the circuit state is checked.
- Ignoring orientation and adjacency: A device must be positioned where it can receive the torch’s power; a nearby component is not automatically powered merely because it is visible.
How torch light falls off
The Minecraft Wiki gameplay-tips tutorial records a normal torch at light level 14 and explains that light drops by one level per block as it travels away from the source. This falloff is why a torch that looks bright at one end of a room can leave a dark pocket at the other end.
Think in terms of distance and geometry, not just torch count. Walls, ceilings, ledges, stairs and side tunnels can interrupt a straight path. A torch placed on a floor illuminates the corridor around it, but it may not adequately cover a recess behind a pillar or the underside of a staircase.
What the 26-block mining pattern means
The gameplay-tips tutorial gives a resource-saving mining pattern of placing torches every 26 blocks along a floor in a straight run. Used as intended, this spacing keeps the light from reaching zero along that run while reducing the number of torches consumed.
It is not a guarantee that every nearby space is safe. A 26-block floor interval says nothing about a side tunnel, a vertical shaft, a bend or a room wider than the line of torches. Treat it as a straight-corridor pattern, then add lights wherever the geometry creates a separate pocket.

When to use closer spacing
Use a shorter interval when you need consistently bright visibility, when the floor is uneven, or when several routes meet. Entrances, stairwells and intersections deserve extra attention because players and mobs can approach from more than one direction. In a built room, place a light source where it can reach corners and the spaces behind large decorations rather than spacing every torch by distance alone.
How far apart should torches be for spawn-proofing?
The Minecraft Wiki spawn-proofing tutorial gives about 14 blocks as an efficient distance to the next torch when your goal is to prevent zero-light gaps. Use that figure as a practical starting point for a regular area, then tighten the spacing around irregular terrain.

- Walk the area and identify every floor, ledge, corner, stairwell and side passage where a mob could appear.
- Place a torch, then measure roughly 14 blocks to the next planned torch in the same open section.
- Check the spaces between the lights from the height and direction a player would actually approach.
- Add torches at intersections, behind structures and at changes in elevation.
- Recheck after adding walls, platforms or furniture; new blocks can create shadows and enclosed pockets.
The 14-block guideline is about efficient coverage, not a universal spacing law for every shape. A long, flat hallway can follow it more closely than a cavern with multiple levels. In a compact room, placing lights closer together may be simpler than calculating every corner.
Will torches stop mobs from spawning?
Torches help against hostile mobs whose spawning depends on low light, because they raise the light level around the area. They do not solve every spawning problem. The spawn-proofing tutorial specifically lists slimes, magma cubes and hoglins as examples whose spawning does not rely on low light in the same way.
What torches can accomplish
- Illuminate caves, corridors and bases so low-light-dependent hostile mobs have fewer suitable spaces.
- Reveal dark pockets that are easy to miss from the center of a room.
- Make a route easier to inspect before you build walls, doors or storage.
What torches cannot guarantee
- They do not prevent every mob type from spawning.
- They do not cover a side chamber merely because the main corridor is lit.
- They do not replace checking the rules that govern a particular Nether or Overworld creature.
If a supposedly lit area continues to produce mobs, inspect the whole volume rather than the nearest torch. Check behind blocks, beneath platforms, above ceilings and down adjoining shafts. Then determine whether the creature is one of the low-light exceptions before adding more lights.

Rooms and bases
Start with the perimeter. Place lights so each corner, entrance and change in ceiling height is visible from another light. Add a second pass after furniture, storage, farms or decorative walls are installed, because those additions can hide spaces that were open during the first pass.

- Check all four corners, not only the center of the floor.
- Look behind chests, large decorations and wall recesses.
- Light stair landings and the area beneath stairs separately.
- Inspect ceiling transitions where a high room meets a lower corridor.
- Place an extra torch at every doorway or junction so route choices remain visible.
Caves and mines
Use the 26-block straight-run pattern when conserving torches in a simple tunnel. At every branch, stop treating the passage as one line: light the branch, its bend and its end independently. A torch at a junction should help you see the junction, but it should not be counted as complete coverage for every tunnel that leaves it.
Paths and outdoor routes
Outdoor paths often change elevation and direction. Put lights at turns, bridges, stair steps and entrances rather than measuring only along the ground distance. If a path passes under an overhang or through a narrow cut, inspect those sections as enclosed spaces.
Nether lighting strategy
Nether builds benefit from separating visual identity from working brightness. Soul torches supply the blue-flame appearance and repel piglins, but their light level 10 is lower than the normal torch’s level 14.

- Inspect stairs, corners and work areas for darker pockets.
- Supplement the soul torches wherever you need brighter visibility.
- Recheck intersections and portal rooms after construction changes.
This approach preserves the soul-torch look while avoiding a corridor that is attractive but difficult to navigate or inspect.

Microsoft’s Vibrant Visuals documentation lists minecraft:torch, minecraft:redstone_torch and minecraft:soul_torch as point-light blocks with different default colors: warm cream for a torch, red for a redstone torch and cyan for a soul torch.
Those colors describe the Vibrant Visuals rendering system. They should not be read as a universal gameplay change to the light levels or redstone behavior described above. If two torches look different on your screen, confirm which visual settings and Bedrock edition you are using before drawing conclusions about their mechanical properties.

Troubleshooting torch problems
“My room is lit, but mobs still appear.”
Search for an unlit pocket rather than adding torches randomly. Check corners, behind furniture, stair undersides, ceiling transitions and adjoining rooms. If the area is fully covered, consider whether the creature is a slime, magma cube or hoglin, since those examples are not controlled by low light in the same way.

“My 26-block tunnel pattern is not safe.”
The 26-block pattern applies to a straight floor run. Branches, vertical spaces, bends and wide caverns need their own lights. Add torches at each branch and inspect the full cross-section of the tunnel.
“Soul torches make the corridor too dim.”
That is expected: soul torches emit light level 10. Keep them for styling or piglin deterrence and supplement them in work areas, stairs and junctions where you need stronger illumination.
“The redstone lamp does not turn on.”
Follow the Microsoft Learn placement rule: put the redstone torch on an adjacent block, not directly on the lamp. Then check whether the block carrying the torch is powered, because powering that attachment block deactivates the torch.
“The torch colors do not match another screenshot.”
Visual appearance can depend on Bedrock Vibrant Visuals defaults. The documented defaults are warm cream for normal torches, red for redstone torches and cyan for soul torches; these rendering colors do not establish different gameplay light levels.
