In Minecraft, “taming” a strider means putting a saddle on it and steering it with a warped fungus on a stick; it does not create a permanent ownership state like taming a wolf. Striders are peaceful, fireproof Nether mobs that walk on lava, making them the safest practical way to cross a lava lake when you plan the approach and dismount carefully.

What a strider is—and what taming means

A strider is a peaceful Nether mob that can walk on the surface of lava and is immune to fire. Minecraft gameplay developer Brandon Pearce described it as the only non-aggressive mob in the Nether. Its purpose was to give players a way to cross lava lakes instead of building a bridge across them.

The word tame is informal in this context. The researched mechanics describe saddling and controlling a strider, not a permanent wolf-style ownership relationship. Once saddled, it can carry you; while you hold the correct control item, you can direct it and make it boost. If you leave it unsaddled, it remains a normal wild mob.

Where to find a strider

Search lava seas and lakes in the Nether

Look across the surface of large Nether lava seas and smaller lava lakes. Striders are easiest to spot when you scan from a solid shoreline, a natural ledge or a platform you built above the lava. Because the mob is designed for lava travel, searching on solid ground alone can miss the groups you need.

Use warped fungus to bring one closer

Hold warped fungus while approaching. It attracts a strider at short range, so you can encourage one toward a reachable edge rather than trying to swim or jump into lava to mount it. Keep your feet on a protected platform while luring it whenever possible.

Make the approach survivable

A Fire Resistance potion is optional, but it is a sensible precaution if the strider is far from shore or the surrounding lava makes a mistake likely. Fire Resistance does not make hostile mobs harmless and does not remove the need for a landing platform, but it gives you a chance to recover from accidental lava contact while you set up.

Equipment checklist

Item What it does Important detail
Saddle Makes the strider rideable. The advancement guide lists loot, fishing, trading and a strider that already has a saddle as possible ways to obtain one.
Warped fungus Attracts striders and enables breeding. Hold it near a strider to lure it; feed it to two adults to trigger love mode.
Warped fungus on a stick Directs a mounted strider and provides a boost. Craft it from a fishing rod, including a damaged fishing rod, plus warped fungus.
Fire Resistance potion Provides a safety margin during a lava-side approach. It is optional. You still need to manage falls, hostile mobs and dismounting.
Solid blocks Create a path, staging area and destination platform. Build a place to stand before mounting and a reachable solid block before dismounting.

How to saddle and ride a strider

  1. Choose a route first. Identify where you will mount, the direction you need to travel and the solid block or platform where you will finish. Do not begin by standing at an unprotected lava edge.
  2. Bring the strider within reach. Hold warped fungus and let its attraction bring the mob toward your safe position. Extend a short bridge or platform if the shore does not give you a safe interaction point.
  3. Apply the saddle. Use the saddle on the strider. A successful interaction makes the mob rideable.
  4. Mount. Use the normal mount interaction for your edition and platform. Keep your camera and route pointed toward the destination before you start moving.
  5. Select the warped fungus on a stick. While mounted, hold this item to direct the strider. Face the destination and use the item when you need the mount to boost.
  6. Cross the lava deliberately. Make small steering corrections and keep the destination in view. Avoid treating the ride as protection for your character: the strider is fireproof, but you can still be hurt by lava contact, a fall, hostile mobs or a bad dismount.
  7. Set up the dismount. Aim at a reachable solid block or landing platform before pressing your edition’s dismount or use control. Leaving the strider while looking at open lava is the most avoidable way to turn a successful crossing into an emergency.

The official Minecraft explanation condenses the setup to a saddle and a warped fungus on a stick. That is the complete control kit; no leash, armor or separate ownership item is required for riding.

How strider control works

Steering

The mounted strider follows your facing direction when you hold the warped fungus on a stick. Look toward the shore, platform or route you want to follow, then make gradual adjustments rather than turning sharply at the edge of a lava lake. Exact key names and controller buttons depend on whether you play Java Edition, Bedrock Edition or a console version, so use that edition’s ordinary mount, use and dismount controls.

Boosting

Using the warped fungus on a stick can boost the mount. Save boosts for a long crossing, a gap between safe platforms or the final approach to land instead of repeatedly activating it without a route. The available material does not establish a universal speed, duration or recharge figure, so do not plan a journey around an exact boost distance.

Stopping and leaving

There is no need to force a jump onto land. Bring the strider alongside a solid destination and leave it from a position where your character will stand on that block. If the only visible landing is a narrow ledge, widen it before you ride back across; a larger platform is more useful than trying to time a precise dismount.

How to cross lava without losing the rider

Separate mount safety from player safety

The strider can remain on lava without burning, but the player is not made fireproof by sitting on it. Lava contact, a fall from the mount, attacks from hostile mobs and an unsafe landing can still cause damage. Fire Resistance can reduce the consequences of an approach error, but it does not replace a route, a destination platform or attention to the camera.

Build the two critical platforms

  • Mounting platform: a solid area from which you can lure the strider, apply the saddle and mount without stepping into lava.
  • Landing platform: a solid area that is visible and reachable from the final part of the crossing. Face it before you dismount.

If the lava sea is wide, add intermediate staging blocks or a protected bridge alongside the route. The strider’s value is that it removes the need to bridge the entire lake; it does not prevent you from using a few blocks where mounting and landing are difficult.

Watch the environment

Plan around nearby hostile mobs and overhangs as well as the lava itself. A strider cannot stop an attack from an enemy on a ledge, and a distracted rider can drift away from the intended shoreline. Keep the warped fungus on a stick selected during the crossing and keep the landing area in view whenever the terrain allows.

Keep the strider comfortable after the trip

Striders are most comfortable in lava. When taken onto land they turn purple and shiver. The official Minecraft article notes that players often make lava pools to keep them warm, although the game does not require such a pool mechanically. Keep the mount out of rain, and provide a controlled lava area if you plan to keep it near a base rather than return it immediately to a lava lake.

How to lure, park and recover a strider

Luring from shore

Hold warped fungus near the strider and wait for it to approach within attraction range. Move backward onto your prepared platform instead of walking toward the lava. If the mob stops short, extend the platform or reposition yourself while keeping the fungus visible to it.

Parking at a base

A lava pool surrounded by solid blocks gives a saddled strider a warm place to stand and reduces the chance that it wanders onto ordinary ground. Leave enough room to approach and mount, and put a barrier or wall around the pool if other mobs or accidental player movement could push the strider away from the base.

Recovering a mount

If you dismount on a distant shore, use warped fungus to draw the strider toward a safe position before attempting another ride. Do not assume that leaving it on land is harmless: the purple, shivering appearance is a warning that it is outside the environment where it is most comfortable. If you cannot reach it safely, improve the route with blocks before trying to retrieve it.

Breeding striders with warped fungus

Start love mode

Feed warped fungus to two striders. Each must receive the item for the pair to enter love mode and produce a baby. Use a contained lava area or a safe platform beside lava so that you are not trying to feed them while balancing on an exposed edge.

Understand the timing qualification

Community references commonly record roughly 20 minutes for a baby strider to mature and roughly five minutes of cooldown before the parents can breed again. Those timings should not be treated as universal across every edition and update; verify them for the version you are playing if a farm or schedule depends on exact minutes.

Raise a useful group

Keep breeding adults and babies in a warm, enclosed area with room to approach them. Warped fungus remains useful after breeding because it can lure a strider toward the exit, a staging platform or the next crossing route. Breeding creates more rideable options, but each individual still needs a saddle before it can carry you.

Common problems and fixes

The strider will not come to me

Check that you are holding warped fungus and are close enough for its short-range attraction. Move to a safer, more visible platform and try again. If the mob is separated by an awkward ledge, build a small approach rather than entering lava to close the gap.

I saddled it but cannot steer it

Make sure the strider is actually mounted and that the selected item is a warped fungus on a stick, not ordinary warped fungus. Face the intended route, then use the item to direct or boost. Controls vary by edition, so confirm the mount and use actions for your platform.

The strider turned purple and is shivering

It is on land rather than lava. Return it to a controlled lava pool or guide it back to a lava lake with warped fungus. The visual change does not mean that a permanent ownership mechanic has failed; it indicates that the mount is outside its preferred environment.

I keep falling into lava when I dismount

Stop dismounting while looking at open lava. Before leaving the mount, turn toward a reachable solid block, widen the destination with building blocks and use Fire Resistance when the route is especially exposed.

The ride is dangerous even though the mob is fireproof

Fireproofing applies to the strider, not automatically to the rider. Check for hostile mobs on nearby ledges, lava gaps between the strider and shore, and a landing platform that is too small or out of view. Treat every crossing as a vehicle trip that still needs a safe start and finish.

Breeding takes longer than expected

The approximately 20-minute growth and five-minute cooldown figures are community-reference timings, not guaranteed edition-independent values. Check the current behavior for your Java or Bedrock version before diagnosing a delayed baby as a failure.

Java and Bedrock considerations

The core loop—find a strider, use a saddle, ride with a warped fungus on a stick and cross lava—applies to the guide’s intended mechanic. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition can differ, and updates can change behavior. The available evidence does not establish a complete current edition-by-edition comparison of speed, submerged riding or every control detail, so avoid relying on an exact speed figure or on claims about riding below lava. Use your edition’s current mount and dismount controls and test a short crossing near a prepared platform before committing to a large lava sea.

When a strider is the right Nether transport

  • Choose a strider when the obstacle is a broad lava lake and you want to cross the surface with a small equipment kit.
  • Prepare blocks as well when the shore is dangerous, the lava crossing has no visible destination or you need a secure place to mount and dismount.
  • Use Fire Resistance as backup when reaching the mount itself requires working beside lava or when a fall would otherwise end the trip immediately.
  • Do not use the mount as a substitute for route planning. It carries you over lava; it does not prevent hostile attacks, poor visibility or an unsafe landing.

A repeatable lava-crossing checklist

  1. Pack a saddle, warped fungus, a warped fungus on a stick and, when appropriate, a Fire Resistance potion.
  2. Locate the strider on a Nether lava sea or lake.
  3. Build or identify a solid mounting platform.
  4. Hold warped fungus and lure the strider to that platform.
  5. Apply the saddle and mount.
  6. Select the warped fungus on a stick and face the destination.
  7. Boost only when useful, keeping the final landing area in sight.
  8. Reach the solid destination and aim at it before dismounting.
  9. Return the strider to lava or a controlled lava pool so it does not remain shivering on land.

Follow that sequence and “taming” a strider becomes a practical setup rather than a search for a missing ownership command: saddle it, control it with warped fungus on a stick, and treat the rider’s route and dismount as separate safety problems from the mob’s ability to walk on lava.
