To make stained glass in Minecraft, place one dye in the center of a 3×3 crafting grid and surround it with eight regular glass blocks. The recipe produces eight stained-glass blocks in that dye’s color. Minecraft has 16 dye-linked stained-glass colors, and any stained-glass block can be crafted into panes for thinner windows and long façades.

This guide explains the recipes, color choices, beacon behavior, the difference between stained and tinted glass, edition-specific caveats, and practical window designs that remain readable at Minecraft’s block scale.

What stained glass is used for

Stained glass is a transparent decorative block: it keeps the see-through quality of ordinary glass while adding a dye color. It is useful for church windows, skylights, roof lanterns, greenhouse walls, mosaics, banners, map-room designs and colored beacon installations. Because the block remains transparent, the surrounding sky, terrain and interior lighting affect how vivid it appears.

There are two forms:

  • Stained-glass blocks are full cubes. They suit thick walls, skylights, mosaics and beacon structures where you want a substantial frame or layered depth.
  • Stained-glass panes are thin window elements. They are efficient for narrow openings, tall façades and uninterrupted stretches of glazing.

Mojang summarizes the basic method this way: “It’s made by surrounding any colour of dye with regular glass in a crafting bench, and – just like regular glass – can be made into panes if you prefer.”

How to craft stained-glass blocks

Materials and output

Input Amount Result
Regular glass blocks 8 8 stained-glass blocks in the selected dye color
One dye 1

The recipe is shapeless in practical terms: the dye must be the center item and the eight glass blocks must occupy every surrounding slot. A single dye colors the entire batch; you cannot combine several dyes in one crafting operation.

Step-by-step recipe

  1. Open a crafting table so you have a 3×3 grid.
  2. Place one regular glass block in each of the eight outer slots.
  3. Put the dye you want in the center slot.
  4. Move the resulting eight stained-glass blocks into your inventory.

If the output does not appear, check that all eight outer positions contain ordinary glass rather than panes, tinted glass or another transparent block. Also check that the center item is a dye recognized by your edition.

Getting the regular glass

Regular glass is smelted from sand or red sand in a furnace, blast furnace or other furnace-compatible setup. Keep ordinary glass separate from your finished colors: once a glass block has been dyed, it cannot be returned to clear glass by crafting.

How to craft stained-glass panes

Crafting uses stained-glass blocks rather than clear glass. Place six stained-glass blocks of the same color in two horizontal rows of three in a crafting table. The result is a stack of stained-glass panes in that color. Repeat the recipe for each color; panes do not accept a dye after they are crafted.

Panes connect to neighboring panes and many solid blocks, allowing a narrow opening to read as one continuous window. They are usually the better choice when the wall is only one block thick or when you want to reduce the visual weight of a large façade. Full blocks are easier to combine with stair, slab and solid-block frames when the window is part of a deep roof or a thick monument.

Bedrock and Education documentation also describes base-material substitutions in some crafting contexts. Bone meal can stand in for white dye, ink sacs for black dye, lapis lazuli for blue dye and cocoa beans for brown dye. Treat these as edition-specific behavior: Java, Bedrock and Education recipes and item handling have changed across versions, so verify the target edition before preparing a bulk crafting plan or command.

Can stained glass change a beacon beam?

Yes. A stained-glass block placed in a beacon’s beam path changes the visible beam to that glass color. Stained-glass panes have the same beam effect as stained-glass blocks, so a pane can be used when the surrounding structure needs a thinner element.

Beacon placement procedure

  1. Build and activate the beacon on its valid pyramid base.
  2. Make sure the beam has a clear vertical path through the blocks above the beacon.
  3. Place one stained-glass block or pane in that path.
  4. Stand back and check the beam from the distance at which the installation will normally be viewed.
  5. If you are testing several colors, replace the test piece one at a time so you can identify which color reads best against the sky and nearby buildings.

Use a dark frame around a colored beacon housing to keep the beam’s edge legible. A beacon that looks saturated against a bright daytime sky may appear much darker at night or when viewed through another transparent layer.

Stained glass versus tinted glass

Characteristic Stained glass Tinted glass
Main purpose Decorative colored transparency Viewing an area while blocking light
Light behavior Transparent; the scene and lighting remain visible through it Blocks light, making it suitable for dark interiors
Typical use Windows, mosaics, skylights and beacon color Inspection windows for dark mob farms and other light-sensitive rooms
Visual design role Adds a dye color to a building Provides a dark, functional viewing panel rather than a colored window

If you need to inspect a dark mob farm without allowing daylight or artificial light to enter, use tinted glass. Stained glass is not an equivalent substitute: its transparency and color do not provide the same light-blocking function.

Natural generation: where you may find colored glass

Crafting is the normal way to obtain the color and quantity you want, but colored glass can also appear in generated structures. Wiki documentation records magenta stained glass in End cities and brown stained glass in trail ruins. These are generation examples, not a dependable replacement for the eight-glass-plus-one-dye recipe. Generated structures may be rare, far away or difficult to loot safely, and they do not guarantee the color needed for a planned build.

How to plan a stained-glass window

1. Choose a limited palette

Start with two to five related colors. A small palette gives each color a job and prevents a block-scale pattern from becoming visual noise. Reserve one dark color—often black, gray, brown or dark blue—for outlines and separators.

2. Pick the motif before collecting materials

Decide whether the window represents a flower, crest, geometric diamond, compass, animal, symbol or abstract gradient. Draw it on graph paper or in a temporary wall of ordinary blocks. If the motif is not recognizable in a small mock-up, adding more colors will rarely fix it; increase the motif’s scale instead.

3. Scale details to Minecraft’s grid

Small symbols need broad color regions. Give each major section enough blocks or panes to form a clear shape, and use a one-block dark outline where adjacent colors would otherwise merge. For a tall window, repeat a motif vertically rather than compressing many tiny details into one panel.

4. Build an opaque frame

Wood, stone, deepslate, copper and other opaque materials create a visual boundary around transparent colors. A frame also hides awkward pane connections and gives the window a readable silhouette from a distance. Match the frame to the building’s palette rather than choosing a second set of competing accent colors.

5. Test three lighting conditions

  • Daylight: check the window against the sky and nearby terrain.
  • Night: verify that dark colors do not disappear into the background.
  • Interior lighting: add the lamps, candles or glow blocks the finished room will use; a color that looks vivid outside may look muted from inside.

Eight stained-glass build ideas

Rose window for a chapel or castle

Use a circular or octagonal frame with a dark outline, then divide the center into wedges. A two-color radial pattern—such as red and yellow—reads clearly at modest scale. Add a pale center and repeat the wedge pattern around it. Panes work for a shallow wall; blocks look better when the window is recessed into a thick stone façade.

Diamond skylight

Cut a diamond opening into a roof and repeat a light-blue, white and cyan pattern from the center outward. Keep the roof frame dark so the daylight colors remain distinct. Full stained-glass blocks are easier to place in a sloped or layered skylight where the roof has depth.

Greenhouse wall

Combine light green, lime and white with a wooden or copper frame. Use larger clear or pale sections for the main panes and reserve lime for leaf-like diagonal accents. Panes make long greenhouse walls look lighter and reduce the amount of solid material interrupting the view of crops.

Harbor or underwater window

Use blue, light blue and cyan in horizontal bands, with darker blue at the bottom to suggest depth. Add a solid stone or prismarine border and check the design from both inside and outside. Interior lighting matters: bright lamps behind the glass can flatten the color bands.

Guild crest or banner wall

Choose one background color, one contrasting symbol and one dark outline. Large blocks or panes can reproduce a simple shield, letter or animal head. Build the crest at least a few blocks wider than the frame members around it so the symbol remains visible from the street.

Nether portal observatory

Purple and magenta provide a portal-inspired palette without copying the portal frame itself. Place the colored glass in a thick, dark surround and use repeated vertical panels rather than a tiny central emblem. Test the design in both overworld daylight and the darker Nether environment.

Market lanterns and street canopies

Make small hanging canopies from two related warm colors, such as orange and yellow, with brown supports. Panes are ideal for lightweight stalls and lantern boxes. Repeat the same two-color rhythm across several stalls to make the market feel intentional without requiring a large mosaic.

Beacon gallery

Build several beacon bases in a row and give each beam a different stained-glass color. Use matching colored panes in the surrounding walls so the beam and architecture share a visual language. Leave enough open space above each beacon to keep the beams visible and frame the gallery with a single neutral material.

Troubleshooting common problems

The recipe gives no output

  • Confirm there are exactly eight regular glass blocks, not glass panes.
  • Put the dye in the center slot.
  • Check that the dye is valid for your edition and that you have not used a similarly colored but unsupported item.
  • Move the items to a crafting table if you are using a smaller grid.

The window looks dull or the colors blend together

  • Reduce the palette to two or three colors.
  • Add a dark opaque outline between adjacent regions.
  • Increase the motif’s scale instead of adding tiny colored pixels.
  • Recheck the design at night and under the finished interior lighting.

The beacon beam is still the wrong color

  • Make sure the stained glass or pane is directly in the vertical beam path.
  • Remove another colored transparent piece above the beacon if it is affecting the result.
  • Check that the beacon is active and that the block you placed is stained glass rather than ordinary or tinted glass.

The design does not connect cleanly

Panes connect differently depending on the neighboring block. Replace isolated panes with full stained-glass blocks where you need a solid corner, or add frame posts to hide connection gaps. Prototype one section before duplicating it across a large wall.

Edition and version notes

Recipe behavior is broadly familiar across Minecraft editions, but item substitutions, identifiers and data handling are not permanently identical. Bedrock and Education references document substitutions for several base dyes; historical Java and Bedrock identifiers have also changed. If you are using commands, structure files, inventory editors or a guide written for an older release, verify the exact edition and version first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For ordinary survival crafting, the safest cross-edition workflow is to collect regular glass and the named dye, craft a small test batch, and confirm the color and pane conversion before committing resources to a large build. For technical projects, record the edition, platform and game version alongside any command or block identifier.

Quick planning checklist

  • Choose two to five colors and reserve a dark outline.
  • Decide whether the window is decorative, structural or part of a beacon installation.
  • Use blocks for depth, mosaics and skylights; use panes for thin walls and long façades.
  • Mock up the motif at its intended viewing distance.
  • Test daylight, nighttime and interior lighting.
  • Use tinted glass instead when the room must remain dark, such as a mob-farm viewing area.
  • Verify edition-specific substitutions and identifiers before bulk crafting or command use.
