Craft one Minecraft Spyglass with one Amethyst Shard and two Copper Ingots. Put the shard in the top-middle slot of a crafting table, then put a copper ingot in the middle-middle slot and another in the bottom-middle slot. Hold the finished Spyglass and use it (right-click on a mouse, or the platform’s use button) to magnify distant terrain, mobs, structures, and landmarks. The recipe and basic function are the same in Java and Bedrock; Bedrock additionally lets you adjust how quickly the camera moves while zoomed.
What the Spyglass is for
A Spyglass is Minecraft’s vanilla, craftable way to inspect something far away without walking to it. When you look through it, the normal view is replaced by a circular magnified view. That makes small silhouettes and distant details easier to identify before you choose a route, approach a structure, or commit to a fight.

Mojang describes the purpose simply: “Spyglasses make far-away things larger so you can see them more clearly.” It is a viewing tool, not a weapon or a way to interact with a block at a distance. You still need to travel to a target to mine, open, attack, trade, or build.
Materials and where to get them
Copper Ingots
Start with copper ore or raw copper. Smelt the raw copper in a furnace or another suitable smelting block to produce Copper Ingots. If you already have ingots in a chest, no additional processing is needed. The Spyglass recipe consumes two ingots, so check your inventory before leaving an expedition to search for the second material.

Smelting is the important step: raw copper cannot be placed directly into the Spyglass recipe. A furnace (or another block that performs the same smelting function) converts it into the ingot form the crafting grid accepts. Keep the finished ingots together so they are easy to place in the vertical recipe.
Amethyst Shard
Amethyst Shards come from underground amethyst geodes. Inside a geode, look for fully grown amethyst clusters—the mature crystal clusters rather than the surrounding decorative blocks. Break a fully grown cluster to obtain shards, then carry at least one shard back to a crafting table.

An amethyst block is part of the geode’s structure, while budding amethyst is the growth block that produces clusters. The harvestable target is the fully grown cluster. If a cluster is still developing, return later rather than breaking the growth block in the hope of getting the lens ingredient.
How to craft a Spyglass
You need a crafting table because the recipe uses a three-by-three grid. Arrange the components in one straight vertical line:

- Open the crafting table.
- Place the Amethyst Shard in the top-center square.
- Place one Copper Ingot directly below it in the center square.
- Place the second Copper Ingot in the bottom-center square.
- Move the Spyglass from the result slot into your inventory or hotbar.
The vertical order matters. If the shard is moved to a side column, or the ingots are not stacked beneath it, the result slot remains empty. You can rotate the pattern only if your edition’s recipe system accepts that arrangement; the dependable arrangement shared by Java and Bedrock is the centered vertical column shown above.
Using the Spyglass in game
Activate it
Put the Spyglass in your hand and use the item. On a mouse and keyboard, that is normally right-click. Controllers and touch devices expose the same action through their use-item control or on-screen Spyglass button. The exact button label depends on your keybinds and platform, but the requirement is always the same: the Spyglass must be the selected item.

While active, aim at the horizon, a structure, a mob, or a build. Release the use action or switch items to return to your normal view. Because the tool is held like any other item, choose a safe hotbar slot before you begin scouting.
What magnification changes
The Spyglass narrows your field of view so a distant part of the world occupies more of the screen. This is why a tower, portal, ship, village, or moving mob that looked like a few pixels can become recognizable. The tool does not increase the world’s render distance, reveal areas that have not loaded, or identify an object automatically; it enlarges what is already visible to the client.

How the zoom is calculated
Spyglass magnification is tied to your configured field of view (FOV), rather than being one fixed zoom value for every player. Mojang’s 2022 explanation says the Spyglass view uses one-tenth of the configured FOV. A smaller resulting angle shows a tighter slice of the scene.

Those are default examples, not a promise that every player sees the same angle. If you change the FOV slider, the Spyglass view changes with it. A wider configured FOV produces a wider Spyglass view; a narrower configured FOV produces a tighter one. This also explains why screenshots from Java and Bedrock can appear slightly different even when both players are using the item correctly.

The crafting pattern, required materials, and core distant-view function are shared between the two editions. You do not need a separate recipe or a different kind of shard for Bedrock, and a Java world does not require a special item variant.
Bedrock documentation adds a comfort setting for camera movement. Looking through a Spyglass slows camera motion, and the Spyglass Damping slider in Settings controls that behavior. Increase damping if small hand movements feel too abrupt; reduce it if you want the view to follow your input more directly. This changes control comfort, not the recipe or the amount of visual enlargement.

If a tutorial shows a different button, first check whether it was recorded on the other edition or on a different input device. The action is still the platform’s normal use-item command, and custom keybinds can replace the default mouse or controller mapping.
Practical reasons to carry one
Plan a route before you travel
From a hill, tower, or other secure overlook, sweep the horizon for a village, portal, ship, tower, or another landmark. Confirming a destination before descending can save food, tools, and daylight. It is especially useful when several terrain features look alike at normal distance.
Identify moving shapes
A dark pixel on a ridge could be a useful animal, a hostile mob, or a shadowed block. Zoom long enough to distinguish a moving creature from terrain detail before you approach. Identification helps you decide whether to bring a weapon, make a detour, or avoid the area.
Review a build from outside
Walk back from a house, wall, bridge, or tower and use the Spyglass to inspect its silhouette. Long-distance viewing exposes a roofline that is out of alignment, a gap in a wall, or a shape that looks unbalanced from the intended approach. This is a visual review aid; it does not change blocks or provide a blueprint.

Check landmarks while mapping
When exploring, pause at a safe high point and verify the position of a distinctive feature before choosing a heading. A magnified landmark can serve as a visual reference when multiple valleys or coastlines appear similar. Mark the location with your normal map, coordinates, signs, or other navigation method after you have confirmed it.

- Reach cover or a raised position before activating the item. A roof, hillside, enclosed platform, or other barrier is safer than standing in an open field.
- Pause your movement. Zooming while walking can carry you into a ravine, fire, water, or a mob you did not notice at the edge of the screen.
- Scan in short passes from left to right, then lower the Spyglass to restore your full view before turning or moving.
- Confirm the target at normal scale. The magnified view is narrow, so threats outside the circle can remain unseen.
- Switch back to a defensive or building item before you leave cover.
The key habit is alternating between magnified inspection and ordinary awareness. A Spyglass helps you see one distant detail; it does not provide peripheral vision.
Spyglass versus other ways to look farther
Players often compare the vanilla item with simply looking normally or with a client-side zoom feature. The differences are practical rather than cosmetic.

The Spyglass is the predictable choice when you want a feature that belongs to the base game and can be used in an unmodified world. A client feature may offer different controls, but its availability and behavior depend on the software and server rules; those details are outside the vanilla item’s recipe.
Troubleshooting
The result slot is empty
- Verify that the shard is in the top-middle square, not merely somewhere in the top row.
- Check that both ingots form a centered column beneath the shard.
- Confirm that you have Copper Ingots, not raw copper or copper ore.
- Confirm that the purple item is an Amethyst Shard, not an amethyst block or budding amethyst.
- Use a crafting table rather than a two-by-two personal crafting grid.
The Spyglass will not activate
- Select it in the hotbar; having it in your inventory is not enough.
- Press the current use-item control for your device. If you changed keybinds, check the control settings instead of relying on the default button.
- On touch or controller input, use the platform’s on-screen or mapped use action while the item is selected.
The view feels too narrow or different from a guide
- Compare your configured FOV with the guide’s value. Spyglass angle follows your setting, so matching the default requires restoring the edition’s default FOV.
- Remember that Java and Bedrock defaults differ: Mojang reported 70 degrees for Java and 60 degrees for Bedrock in 2022.
- On Bedrock, adjust Spyglass Damping if the camera feels difficult to control. Damping changes movement response, not magnification.
You cannot see the distant target clearly
- Move to a higher or less obstructed position; the Spyglass cannot see through terrain, leaves, or unloaded scenery.
- Stop moving while you inspect. Motion makes a narrow view harder to hold on a small target.
- Lower the Spyglass occasionally to check the surrounding area and make sure you are not exposed to a nearby threat.
Limits worth knowing before you rely on it
A Spyglass does not extend simulation or render distance. If the game has not rendered a region, the item cannot reveal its contents. Weather, darkness, particles, terrain, and other visual obstructions still affect what reaches the screen. The tool also does not grant night vision, mark coordinates, or tell you whether a distant structure contains loot.

The narrow view is a trade-off. You gain detail on one small area while losing peripheral awareness. Treat the item as a momentary inspection tool: use it from cover, lower it to move, and keep your normal navigation and combat controls ready.
Quick checklist
- Have one Amethyst Shard from a fully grown cluster in an underground geode.
- Have two Copper Ingots made by smelting raw copper.
- Use a crafting table and place the shard above the two centered ingots.
- Select the Spyglass before pressing the use-item control.
- Expect the view to use one-tenth of your configured FOV.
- On Bedrock, tune Spyglass Damping under Settings if camera movement is uncomfortable.
- Scout from a safe position and lower the item to check your surroundings.

The Spyglass is a small investment with a clear purpose: craft it from an Amethyst Shard and two Copper Ingots, then use it to identify distant places and entities before you move closer.
