Soul sand is useful for far more than slowing you down in the Nether. It is the required growing block for Nether wart, one of the two blocks that support Soul Speed, the base for an upward bubble column, and part of the Wither-summoning structure. It also makes a practical obstacle because players and mobs move slowly across it and sink slightly into the block. This guide explains each use, gives build instructions, compares soul sand with soul soil, and covers the safety and version details that matter in current Java and Bedrock worlds.
What soul sand does
Soul sand is a Nether block with several mechanics that are easy to confuse with one another. Walking over it slows players and mobs, while entities appear to sink slightly into its surface. That slowdown can be useful in a defensive trench or an item-handling system, but it can also leave you exposed near hostile mobs or lava. Mojang specifically warns that being near lava while standing on soul sand can set the player on fire, so treat a soul-sand floor beside lava as a hazard rather than a safe observation point.

The block also has three major construction uses:
- Farming: Nether wart grows on soul sand, making it the required base for a Nether-wart farm. Nether wart is used in brewing potions.
- Transport: Soul sand beneath a continuous column of water source blocks creates an upward bubble column that carries players, mobs and items and lets a player restore breath while inside.
- Summoning: Four soul-sand blocks and three wither skeleton skulls form the Wither-summoning structure when placed in the world.
Soul sand also accepts Soul Speed, an enchantment that increases walking speed on soul sand and soul soil. Soul Speed reaches level III and is obtained through piglin bartering rather than as an ordinary table-made enchantment.
Soul sand and soul soil compared
Soul soil looks related to soul sand and shares two Nether-themed effects, but it is not an interchangeable substitute. The distinctions below prevent the most common farm and elevator mistakes.

If a recipe, farm or elevator is not working, first check the block under the relevant area. A soul-soil patch may look suitable for a Soul Speed path but will fail as a Nether-wart bed or bubble-column base.
Use soul sand to grow Nether wart
Nether wart requires soul sand as its growing base. This is a block requirement, not merely a Nether-themed design preference: replacing the base with soul soil or another block prevents the crop from serving as a Nether-wart farm.

- Place the growing floor. Put soul-sand blocks in the rows where you want to plant. Build the floor in the Nether or in another dimension where your version permits the crop to be grown; the essential block requirement is the soul-sand base.
- Plant Nether wart. Use Nether wart on each soul-sand block. A planted crop occupies the block’s top surface, so leave enough room for the plant and for you to reach it.
- Leave a service path. Soul sand slows movement, so include a walkway or arrange the rows so harvesting does not force you to cross a large field repeatedly. Do not replace the growing blocks themselves with a faster floor.
- Harvest mature plants. Replant the soul-sand rows after harvesting so the farm remains continuous. Keep the harvested crop separate from the planting area if you are sorting items.
No universal growth-time number or yield statistic is established; those values should not be assumed to be universal across editions or versions.

Nether-wart farm checks
- Confirm the base is soul sand, not soul soil.
- Check that the crop was actually planted on the top of the block.
- Do not diagnose a non-growing crop by changing the base to soul soil; that removes the required farming mechanic.
- When publishing or following a technical design, identify whether it targets Java or Bedrock, because the authoritative material for these mechanics is versioned game behavior and edge cases can differ.
Make an upward soul-sand bubble column
Place soul sand beneath a continuous column of water source blocks and the water becomes an upward bubble column. Players, mobs and items rise through it. A player inside can also restore breath, making the column useful as a vertical elevator and as an underwater access route.
Construction steps
- Choose the shaft. Decide the elevator’s width and height first. A one-block shaft is the compact option; a wider shaft can carry more entities but needs more water and wall space.
- Place soul sand at the bottom. The soul-sand block must sit directly beneath the water column you want to move upward.
- Fill the shaft with water source blocks. Every level of the column must be a water source block. Flowing water that has not been converted into source blocks will not provide the continuous column required for the effect.
- Test the bubbles from the bottom. Enter the shaft and verify that the bubbles push you upward. Drop an item if you need to check item transport, and use a controlled test with a mob only where the area is safe.
- Add an exit and a return route. A bubble elevator moves upward, so provide a landing platform or opening at the destination. Build a separate downward route when you need reliable two-way travel; do not expect the soul-sand column itself to pull entities down.
Why the column sometimes fails
- Only the bottom bubbles: one or more levels are flowing water rather than source blocks. Refill the entire shaft as source water.
- No bubbles at all: verify that the bottom block is soul sand and that it is directly below the water column. Soul soil does not substitute for this purpose.
- The player stops midway: inspect the shaft for a missing water source, an opening, or a block interrupting the column.
- Items do not arrive: test the route for gaps and check that the item entered the column rather than landing on a ledge.
- The exit is dangerous: cap the destination with a safe platform and lighting appropriate to the surrounding area; the bubble effect moves entities but does not make the destination secure.
Because the column restores a player’s breath while inside, it can also function as a pause point during underwater construction. That benefit does not remove the need to test the complete route: a break in the source-water chain can leave a player suspended or sinking instead of rising.
Summon the Wither with soul sand
The Wither structure uses four soul-sand blocks and three wither skeleton skulls. It is assembled in the world, not crafted in a crafting table.

Placement pattern
- Make the base. Place three soul-sand blocks in a straight horizontal row.
- Build the center. Place the fourth soul-sand block on the middle block of that row, creating a T shape.
- Add the skulls last. Put one wither skeleton skull on each of the three upper positions of the T. The three skulls complete the structure.
- Prepare before the final skull. Once the final skull is placed, the Wither is summoned. Clear nearby valuables, villagers, farms and redstone that could be damaged, and make sure you have an escape route.
The exact arena design, combat strategy and terrain choice are separate from the block recipe. The important construction facts are the four-to-three count, the T arrangement and the requirement to place the structure in the world.
Common summoning mistakes
- Using soul soil instead of soul sand.
- Trying to craft the Wither in a crafting table.
- Placing fewer than four soul-sand blocks or fewer than three wither skeleton skulls.
- Putting the skulls in a shape other than the three positions across the top of the T.
- Building in a confined area without checking what the summoned boss could damage.
How Soul Speed works
Soul Speed increases walking speed on both soul sand and soul soil. The enchantment has a maximum level of III. Mojang describes it as the answer to trudging through Soul Sand Valleys, but the practical rule is broader: the enchantment applies to the two soul blocks, not just to one named biome.
Getting Soul Speed
Soul Speed is obtained through piglin bartering. It is not presented here as a normal enchanting-table result, so plan your acquisition around bartering rather than repeatedly spending experience on an ordinary enchantment setup.

Applying and using it
- Obtain boots with Soul Speed. The enchantment is a boot effect, so equip the enchanted boots before crossing a soul-sand or soul-soil route.
- Use the boots on the intended surface. The speed benefit applies while walking across soul sand or soul soil. It does not turn ordinary blocks into a faster surface.
- Monitor durability. Mojang notes that boot durability degrades as the wearer walks across soul blocks. Carry a repair or replacement plan for long Nether journeys.
- Keep a safe route. Faster movement reduces time spent in a slow patch, but it does not make lava, hostile mobs or falls harmless.

Choose Soul Speed when the route repeatedly crosses soul sand or soul soil and the time saved is worth boot maintenance. Choose an alternate route when the surface is a small patch, the surrounding lava makes a mistake costly, or you cannot spare boot durability.
Using soul sand in traps and defenses
The block’s slowdown and slight sinking effect make it useful for controlling movement. A strip of soul sand can delay a mob approaching a doorway, extend the time a defender has to react, or make a trench harder to cross. It can also slow the player who enters the trap, so mark maintenance paths and provide a way out.
Design principles
- Place it where delay matters. A short strip at a choke point is easier to maintain than a large field that slows everyone.
- Separate friendly routes. Use ordinary flooring for frequently traveled paths unless the slowdown is intentional.
- Account for Soul Speed. Players wearing Soul Speed boots may cross the same obstacle faster than unenchanted players.
- Keep lava away from standing areas. The warning about fire near lava is especially important in trenches, bridges and Nether platforms.
- Test with the entities you need to control. The block affects players and mobs, while the exact behavior of a particular farm design depends on the rest of its geometry.
Safety around lava and hostile areas
Soul sand’s slowdown changes how quickly you can respond to danger. Near lava, the combination is particularly unforgiving: Mojang warns that being near lava while standing on soul sand can set the player on fire. Treat every soul-sand ledge beside lava as a place requiring deliberate movement, not as a normal floor.

- Build a solid edge or barrier beside exposed lava.
- Keep an escape route that does not require crossing another slow patch.
- Do not test a bubble elevator or trap above an open lava pool without a recovery plan.
- Carry spare Soul Speed boots or a repair option when crossing large soul-sand areas.
- Light and secure the destination of an elevator; movement automation does not prevent hostile spawns or attacks.
Choosing the right block for a project
Use this decision sequence when planning a Nether build:
- Need Nether wart? Use soul sand. Soul soil is not a substitute.
- Need an upward water elevator? Use soul sand under a complete source-water column. Soul soil will not trigger this upward effect.
- Need Soul Speed or soul fire? Either soul block can support Soul Speed, while soul soil is the block associated with soul-fire use in this comparison.
- Need a movement obstacle? Choose soul sand when its slowdown and slight sinking are wanted, and protect the area from lava.
- Need to summon the Wither? Gather four soul-sand blocks and three wither skeleton skulls, then assemble the T in the world.
Version and edition considerations
The authoritative descriptions for these mechanics come from the Nether Update-era Java documentation, while the help material lists Soul Speed’s maximum level as 3. Minecraft Java and Bedrock can change edge-case behavior over time, so identify the exact edition and version when documenting a technical build or troubleshooting a result that differs from these rules.
The stable planning assumptions are the block’s primary roles: soul sand grows Nether wart, supports the Wither structure, and creates an upward bubble column beneath continuous source water; Soul Speed works on soul sand and soul soil and tops out at level III. For an exact farm timing, unusual mob interaction or platform-specific corner case, verify the behavior in the target version before committing resources to a large build.
