Slimes have two practical spawning routes: underground slime chunks below Y=40 and swamp biomes between Y=51 and Y=69 under the swamp’s spawning conditions. Slime chunks offer the most controllable farm location, while swamp farms avoid major excavation but are usually slower.

A reliable farm also needs correct platform heights, enough clearance, nearby spawn-proofing, an active player position, a transport system, and a killing and collection setup. The exact behavior differs between Java and Bedrock, so a design copied from one edition should be tested rather than assumed to work unchanged in the other.

Where do slimes spawn?

There are two useful answers, and choosing between them determines the entire farm design.

Route Valid location Main advantage Main limitation
Slime chunk Inside a generated slime chunk, below Y=40 Predictable underground spawning and precise control over the farm area Requires finding the chunk and excavating or preparing underground space
Swamp or mangrove swamp Y=51–69, with the relevant swamp spawning conditions, normally at night No single underground room or chunk boundary is required Generally lower rates and more competition from other hostile mobs

The Minecraft Wiki’s slime-farming tutorial says every generated chunk has about a 10% chance of being a slime chunk. In those chunks, slimes can spawn below Y=40. This rule is independent of light level: lighting a platform does not make slimes spawn, but it does suppress many competing hostile mobs.

Swamp spawning is a separate system. The same tutorial places swamp slimes between Y=51 and Y=69. A Visual Guide to Minecraft sample describes slimes as spawning in swamps at night and sometimes in deep caves. Treat the swamp height range and nighttime condition as separate from the slime-chunk rule; moving a swamp platform below Y=40 does not turn it into a slime-chunk farm.

How slime chunks work

A slime chunk is determined when the world is generated and is tied to the world seed. It is not created by lighting, placing blocks, or waiting in one location. Roughly one chunk in ten qualifies, so randomly digging until a slime appears can take considerable time.

Use a seed-based finder

The fastest planning method is a seed-based slime-chunk finder such as Chunkbase. Enter the exact world seed, select the correct edition and version when the tool asks, and verify the displayed coordinates against your world. A mismatch in seed, edition, or dimension can make a correct-looking map useless.

Test a chunk manually

You can also locate a chunk through underground exploration. Prepare a large, dark-free test area below Y=40, remove nearby competing spawn spaces, and remain in the correct active range long enough for the game to attempt spawns. Manual testing is slower because a non-spawning chunk can be confused with a farm that is too close, too far away, poorly cleared, or blocked by the mob cap.

Mark boundaries before excavating

Once a candidate is found, mark its edges on the surface or with coordinates. Keep the planned spawning platforms inside the selected chunk if you want the simplest design. You can build larger systems around multiple confirmed slime chunks, but each additional chunk must be verified rather than assumed to qualify.

What Y level do slimes spawn at?

Slime chunks

For a slime-chunk farm, every intended spawning platform must be below Y=40. The threshold applies to the spawning location, so check the platform’s actual block height rather than the height of the ceiling, AFK room, or collection floor.

Swamps

For a swamp farm, use the Y=51–69 band stated by the Minecraft Wiki tutorial and provide the nighttime conditions required by swamp spawning. Building outside that band removes the intended swamp route.

Vertical clearance

Slimes appear in different sizes. Leave approximately a 2.5-block vertical gap between platforms, as described in the tutorial, and ensure each platform has enough open volume for the largest slime size. A low ceiling, partial block, trapdoor arrangement, or decorative beam can invalidate otherwise correct floor space.

How to build a slime-chunk farm

This workflow prioritizes control and repeatability. Exact transport and kill mechanisms can vary by edition and version.

  1. Choose and verify the chunk. Confirm the world seed, edition, and version in a seed finder, or test a candidate manually. Record the chunk coordinates before digging.
  2. Excavate the spawning area. Clear the planned room below Y=40. Remove blocks that interrupt the floors, ceiling, or the vertical gaps between platforms.
  3. Install multiple platforms. Build flat spawning floors with approximately 2.5 blocks of clearance between levels. Keep the surfaces valid for the largest slime and avoid gaps that interrupt movement or collection.
  4. Light the farm and its access routes. Slimes do not need darkness in a slime chunk, but lighting the platforms and nearby surfaces prevents many other hostile mobs from using the available population slots.
  5. Add a lure and transport path. Iron golems are commonly used to attract slimes toward a collection or kill point. Water channels and other transport systems are alternatives; swimming and pushing behavior can differ by edition and version.
  6. Build the killing chamber. Select a method based on whether you value simple construction, low maintenance, or maximum item preservation. The documented choices include magma blocks, wither roses, soul campfires, drowning systems, and cactus traps.
  7. Collect the drops. Place hoppers beneath the kill area and route them into chests or another storage system. Test that slimeballs fall onto the collection surface rather than remaining on ledges or being destroyed.
  8. Set an AFK position. Stand far enough away that slimes can spawn, but close enough that the farm remains active. In Java-style operation, the tutorial recommends keeping the player within 128 blocks of possible slime locations. Use the edition’s current active-range rules when choosing the final position.
  9. Spawn-proof the surroundings. Light, slab, flood, or otherwise invalidate caves, dark terrain, and other spawnable surfaces within the active area. Every competing hostile spawn can consume population capacity that would otherwise be available to slimes.

How to build a swamp slime farm

A swamp route is useful when you want to avoid a large underground excavation. It is not simply a surface version of a slime-chunk farm: it depends on the swamp biome, the Y=51–69 band, nighttime spawning, and the edition’s current rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the biome. Build in a swamp or mangrove swamp area recognized by your edition. A nearby-looking wetland that is technically another biome will not provide the same spawning rules.
  2. Choose a platform height. Keep spawning surfaces between Y=51 and Y=69. Leave the same generous vertical clearance needed by the largest slime size.
  3. Control competing spawns. Light or otherwise spawn-proof nearby caves and terrain. Swamp farms are exposed to more surrounding spawnable space than a carefully isolated underground chunk, so population control matters especially here.
  4. Provide a safe nighttime operating position. The farm must remain active during the swamp’s valid nighttime window. Use a position that keeps the platforms loaded while avoiding direct interference with spawning.
  5. Funnel and kill the slimes. Use channels, a lure, or another transport arrangement to move slimes into the kill chamber, then route slimeballs into hoppers and chests.

Swamp farms do not require a pre-dug underground room and are not limited to one chunk’s footprint, but the tutorial notes that they generally produce lower rates than slime-chunk farms. Choose this route for reduced excavation and simpler terrain access, not for the highest possible output.

Choosing a slime killing system

Method How it is used Trade-off
Magma blocks Guide slimes over damaging magma surfaces in the kill area. Compact and automatic, but the layout must prevent slimes from stopping outside the damage zone.
Wither roses Place damaging roses where transported slimes land. Effective damage source, but requires obtaining and safely handling the roses.
Soul campfires Use campfire damage at the end of a chute or channel. Useful for a simple kill area; protect collection paths from misplaced entities and item loss.
Drowning Use water to hold slimes in a drowning chamber. Can be built without damage blocks, but transport and drowning behavior must be checked in the target edition.
Cactus Push slimes into cactus damage. Simple to understand, but cactus can destroy part of the drops, reducing slimeball recovery.

Use hoppers and chests beneath or beside the final damage area. Before leaving the farm unattended, test every size of slime, confirm that split slimes remain inside the kill zone, and watch several collection cycles for item loss.

Why a slime farm is slow or empty

Most failures come from one of five conditions: the location is wrong, the platform is invalid, the player is in the wrong position, other mobs are using the population cap, or the edition’s rules differ from the tutorial being followed.

The chunk is not actually a slime chunk

Recheck the seed, edition, dimension, and coordinates in the finder. A single incorrect digit in the seed produces a different map. If you tested manually, allow for the possibility that the chunk is valid but the surrounding caves are consuming the available hostile-mob capacity.

The platform height is wrong

Measure the spawning floor itself. Slime-chunk platforms must be below Y=40. Swamp platforms must be within Y=51–69 and in the correct biome. A collection room or AFK platform at the right height does not compensate for a spawning floor outside the band.

The player is too close or too far away

Being too close prevents normal spawning attempts. Being too far can unload the area or allow mobs to despawn, depending on edition and current active-range rules. Move the AFK position until the farm remains loaded while the spawning platforms are outside the no-spawn distance.

Nearby caves are full of hostile mobs

Spawn-proof caves, ravines, underground pockets, and dark terrain within the active range. Lighting only the farm room is often insufficient. Other monsters can occupy the population cap before the game gets an opportunity to create slimes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The platforms do not have enough clearance

Inspect every ceiling, support, staircase, water edge, and decorative block. The largest slime size needs open volume. A platform can look empty while still failing because a low ceiling or partial obstruction invalidates the spawn space.

The transport or kill chamber is stopping the farm

Observe the system while it runs. Slimes may be spawning correctly but remaining on the platform, failing to reach the lure, getting stranded in a water corner, or dying where drops cannot reach the hoppers. Test transport separately from collection so the first failed stage is visible.

Java and Bedrock edition differences

Do not copy a Java farm’s rates, distances, or platform assumptions directly into Bedrock. Microsoft’s Bedrock spawn-rule reference treats the slime as part of the monster population and lists difficulty filtering from Easy through Hard, along with biome filters that include monster-tagged biomes, swamp, mangrove swamp, and frozen categories.

Microsoft’s spawning overview describes a cycle that checks spawn conditions, finds valid positions, checks population caps, evaluates spawn weight, creates the entity, and runs spawn events. That sequence explains why simulation distance, population limits, biome classification, and difficulty can change the result even when the visible farm room looks identical.

There is no universal official slime-farm rate table that applies to every Bedrock version and simulation-distance setting. Treat any claimed hourly number as edition- and configuration-specific unless the conditions are stated. For Bedrock, verify the current simulation distance and documented spawn constraints before adapting a Java tutorial.

Efficiency checklist

  • Verify the seed, edition, version, biome, and coordinates before construction.
  • Keep slime-chunk floors below Y=40 or swamp floors within Y=51–69.
  • Leave approximately 2.5 blocks between platforms and enough open volume for the largest slime.
  • Light the farm and spawn-proof competing caves and terrain within the active range.
  • Use an AFK location that is not too close and does not let the farm unload.
  • Confirm that transport moves every slime size to the damage area.
  • Choose a kill method that matches your priority: simple construction, low maintenance, or minimal drop loss.
  • Inspect hopper input and chest storage before running the farm unattended.
  • On Bedrock, test with the intended difficulty and simulation distance instead of assuming Java behavior.

What slimeballs are used for

Slime farming is worthwhile because a stable supply of slimeballs supports repeated crafting and redstone projects. The farm itself, however, should be designed around the spawning rules first. Adding more storage or a faster kill chamber cannot compensate for an unverified chunk, an invalid Y level, or an active mob cap filled by nearby caves.

Practical decision: slime chunk or swamp?

Choose a slime chunk when you want the most controlled location, are willing to excavate, and need a dependable long-term farm area. Choose a swamp when avoiding extensive underground work matters more than maximum rates and you can manage nighttime operation and a larger competitive spawning area. In either case, the same fundamentals decide success: valid spawning space, population control, correct player distance, reliable transport, and complete item collection.
