Hamachi can let friends join a Minecraft Java server without router port forwarding. The host and every player install the VPN client, join the same virtual network, and connect to the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address on Minecraft’s default port, 25565. It is practical for a small, private group, but it adds client-installation and VPN troubleshooting.
If Hamachi is blocked, unreliable, or inconvenient, use a tunnel such as Playit.gg: its proxy publishes a locally running Minecraft server without opening an inbound router port. Port forwarding remains the most direct self-hosting method when you control the router and accept exposing a public endpoint. Realms or managed hosting are better when automatic backups, persistent uptime, and minimal maintenance matter more than controlling the server files.
Choose the connection method before you start
All of these methods can serve the same Minecraft world, but they solve different networking problems. Decide based on who must install software, whether you control the router, and how much server administration you want to do.
| Method | Best for | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Hamachi-style VPN | A small private group willing to install one VPN client | Every player needs the client and access to the same virtual network; VPN connectivity can be the hardest part to troubleshoot |
| Port forwarding | A host with router access who wants direct connections and full file control | Requires router and firewall changes and exposes a public endpoint |
| Playit.gg | A host who cannot or does not want to forward a port | Requires a running agent and depends on the tunnel service; current limits and pricing should be checked before committing |
| Realms | Up to 10 players who prioritize backups and convenience | Subscription-managed environment with less server-level control |
| Managed hosting | A group that wants persistent uptime without leaving a home computer running | Cost, policies, location, uptime, and mod support vary by provider |
What you need for a self-hosted Java server
- A computer that can stay on while people play, with enough memory for the number of players and any mods you choose.
- Minecraft: Java Edition for the official Java server software. The official server download requires a compatible Java Runtime Environment.
- The server software downloaded from Minecraft’s official server page. Keep it in its own folder rather than mixing it with unrelated files.
- A copy of the exact Minecraft version that the server runs. Every player must use a compatible client version.
- Permission to run Java and allow the server through the computer’s firewall when prompted.
The official server documentation notes that outside connections may require firewall or port-forwarding configuration. Hamachi and a tunnel avoid a router port-forwarding rule, but they do not eliminate the need to permit local Java traffic through the host computer’s firewall.

How to make a Minecraft server with Hamachi
1. Install Java and download the server
- Install a Java Runtime Environment compatible with the Minecraft server version.
- Download the official Minecraft: Java Edition server software and place the server file in a new folder.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in that folder and start the server. A typical command is
java -jar server.jar nogui; replaceserver.jarwith the actual filename if it differs. - When the first run stops and creates configuration files, open
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly after accepting the Minecraft EULA, then start the server again.
The server normally listens on port 25565. Leave the server running while you test and while friends connect. If you change the port in server.properties, use that same port in every connection address and in any firewall rule.
2. Test the server on the host computer
- Launch Minecraft: Java Edition with the same version as the server.
- Choose Multiplayer, then Add Server or Direct Connection.
- On the host computer, try
127.0.0.1:25565. This loopback test checks the server before VPN networking is introduced.
If the local test fails, Hamachi will not fix it. Check that Java is installed, the server process is still running, the version matches, and the console does not show an error. Fix the local server first.
3. Create a private Hamachi network
- Install the Hamachi client on the host computer and sign in if the client requests it.
- Use Hamachi’s option to create a new network. Choose a network ID and a strong network password that you can give privately to the intended players.
- Keep Hamachi online while hosting. The host’s Hamachi window should show an active connection and a virtual IPv4 address.
Hamachi is acting as a VPN-style network, not as a Minecraft server. It gives participating computers a path to one another; the Minecraft server still runs locally on the host.

4. Have friends join the same virtual network
- Each friend installs Hamachi and opens the client.
- Each friend chooses the option to join an existing network and enters the network ID and password you supplied.
- Confirm that the host and each friend appear online in the same Hamachi network. A player who is offline, in a different network, or blocked by a local firewall cannot reach the server.
Do not post the network ID and password publicly. Treat the virtual network as a private guest list and remove people who should no longer have access.

- Craft all sorts of items from boats todiamond armor and create enormousstructures
- Team up with friends in eight-playeronline multiplayer and four-player splitscreen modes
5. Give players the correct Minecraft address
- Copy the host computer’s Hamachi IPv4 address, not its ordinary home-network address.
- Tell friends to open Minecraft’s multiplayer screen and enter that address followed by
:25565, for exampleHAMACHI_IPV4:25565. - If you changed the server port, replace
25565with the custom port.
Friends should not use 127.0.0.1; that address means “this computer” and would point to their own machine. They should also not use your public IP when the connection is intended to travel through Hamachi.
Hamachi troubleshooting
The server works locally but friends cannot connect
- Verify that everyone is in the same Hamachi network and that the host appears online.
- Check the address and port character by character. Use the host’s Hamachi IPv4 address and the server’s actual port.
- Allow Java or the Minecraft server through the host operating system’s firewall on the appropriate private or trusted network profile.
- Temporarily test with security software’s network filtering disabled only long enough to identify whether it is the cause, then restore protection and create a narrow allow rule.
- Confirm that the server console is listening on the expected port and that no other program is using it.
A player can join Hamachi but cannot see the server
Do not rely on the server appearing automatically in the multiplayer list. Use Direct Connection with the host’s Hamachi address and port. Server discovery and actual reachability are separate issues.
Only some players can connect
Compare the affected player’s Hamachi status with a working player’s status. A single blocked client, mismatched network membership, or local firewall rule can affect one person while everyone else works. Have the affected player leave and rejoin the virtual network, then retry the direct address.
The VPN adds too much complexity
That is Hamachi’s central tradeoff: every participant installs and maintains a network client. If your group wants a normal shareable server address, or some players cannot install VPN software, use a tunnel, port forwarding, Realms, or managed hosting instead.

Port forwarding: the direct self-hosting option
Port forwarding sends traffic arriving at your public address to the Minecraft server on the host computer. It avoids requiring friends to install a VPN and gives you complete control over server files, mods, and configuration.
- Give the host computer a consistent local address on your home network so the router’s rule continues to point to the right machine.
- In the router’s port-forwarding section, create a rule for the Minecraft server’s port, normally
25565, directed to the host computer’s local address and the appropriate protocol requested by the router. - Allow the same port through the host computer’s firewall.
- Start the Minecraft server and test from outside the home network, such as through a friend’s connection. Testing only from inside the same network can produce misleading results because some routers do not support loopback connections.
- Give friends the public IP address followed by
:25565, unless you selected a different port.
Minecraft’s official guide warns that publicly sharing a home public IP is a security risk to the home network. Share it only with people you trust, keep the server software and operating system updated, and remove the forwarding rule when you no longer host. Port forwarding may also be impossible when an internet provider places your connection behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), because you do not receive a directly reachable public IPv4 address or control the upstream router.
Playit.gg: a better no-port-forwarding alternative
Playit describes its service as a global proxy that lets you host a server without port forwarding. Its Minecraft documentation supports the same basic local-server workflow: install Java, download the official server, accept the EULA, run the server, and test locally at 127.0.0.1:25565 before publishing it.

- Complete the local Java server setup and confirm that Minecraft can connect to
127.0.0.1:25565on the host. - Install the Playit agent on the host computer and keep it running whenever players need access.
- In the Playit control interface, create a Minecraft tunnel targeting the local server address and port.
- Copy the public address generated for the tunnel and give it to friends. They connect through Minecraft’s multiplayer screen using that address rather than your home public IP.
- Keep both the Minecraft server process and the tunnel agent running. Stopping either one makes the published address unavailable.
This approach is particularly useful when the router is controlled by someone else, port forwarding is unavailable, or CGNAT prevents inbound connections. The tradeoff is dependence on the proxy service and its current plan limits, regions, and policies. Check those terms before choosing it for a large or always-on community.

Realms and managed hosting
When Realms is the right fit
Minecraft’s official support guide recommends Realms for a personal server with automatic backups for you and up to 10 players at a time. Choose it when a maintained, invitation-based environment is more valuable than access to the underlying server process. You avoid router configuration, VPN clients, tunnel agents, and the need to leave your home computer running.
The same convenience limits low-level control. A managed environment is not the equivalent of owning the Java server folder: server-level settings, mod loaders, file access, and migration options depend on what the service supports.
When to consider managed hosting
Managed hosting is a better match for groups that need persistent uptime, a geographic location closer to most players, scheduled management tools, or a server that continues running while the original host’s computer is off. Compare the provider’s supported Minecraft edition and versions, mod and plugin support, backup policy, resource limits, cancellation terms, and data-center location. Prices, uptime commitments, and features vary, so do not assume that a low advertised price includes backups or mod support.
For Minecraft Java, Godlike.Host provides game-server hosting with a Pterodactyl-based panel, a built-in mod installer, and up to three free backups a day with restore.

Security and maintenance checklist
- Use a strong, private Hamachi network password or service invitation.
- Do not publish your home public IP. The official Minecraft guide specifically warns that public disclosure creates a security risk to the home network.
- Keep Java, Minecraft, the server software, and the operating system patched.
- Back up the world while the server is stopped or after saving safely, and verify that a backup can actually be restored.
- Give operator privileges only to people who need them.
- Keep the server whitelist enabled when the world is intended for a known group.
- Stop the server cleanly before shutting down the host computer to reduce the chance of world-file corruption.
- Remove Hamachi membership, tunnel access, or router rules when a player or project no longer needs them.
Which option should you choose?
Choose Hamachi when
Your group is small, everyone can install the same VPN client, and the server should remain private without exposing a home public IP. It is a workable workaround, not a substitute for maintaining the Minecraft server itself.
Choose port forwarding when
You control the router, understand firewall rules, want direct connections, and accept the security implications of publishing a reachable endpoint. This gives the most direct networking path and maximum file control.
Choose Playit.gg when
You cannot forward ports because of CGNAT, router restrictions, or household policy, but still want to run your own Java server with mods and files under your control. It is the clearest first alternative to Hamachi for that situation.
Choose Realms or managed hosting when
Your priorities are backups, uptime, and low maintenance. Realms is designed for a personal world with automatic backups and up to 10 players; managed hosting is more suitable when you need broader server administration or a computer that stays online independently of the host’s home PC.
Moving away from Hamachi
Your world is stored by the Minecraft server, not by Hamachi, so changing the connection method does not require rebuilding the world. Stop the server cleanly, preserve the entire world and configuration folders, then start the same server through the new network path.
Quick Recap
- Make and verify a backup of the world and server configuration.
- Choose port forwarding, a tunnel, Realms, or managed hosting based on the constraints above.
- Test the new address with one trusted player before announcing it to everyone.
- After confirming the new path works, remove obsolete Hamachi memberships or router rules and distribute only the new connection details.
