Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
There is no single Minecraft server specification that fits every world. Bedrock Dedicated Server publishes a baseline of a Core i3-3210 or AMD A8-7600 equivalent, 4 GB of RAM, 180 MB to 1 GB of free storage, and broadband internet. Java Edition requires a compatible Java runtime, but its official server instructions do not provide a universal RAM-per-player or CPU chart. Your edition, active players, world activity, simulation settings, mods or plugins, and other software determine the practical capacity.
Start by separating the game client from the dedicated server
A Minecraft client is the copy running on a player’s computer, console, phone, or tablet. A dedicated server is a separate process that keeps the world running and accepts player connections. They have different requirements.

Mojang’s Java Edition system-requirements article, published July 21, 2026, describes the computer used to play the game. Its minimum target is 1080p at 30 frames per second on the Fast preset, while its recommended target is 1080p at 60 frames per second on Fancy. Those figures describe graphics performance for a player, not the memory or processor capacity of a server. A machine can run the game client well and still be a poor server, or run a small server without being suitable for smooth local gameplay.
Next, identify the edition. Java Edition and Bedrock Dedicated Server use different server packages, runtime requirements, configuration files, and network defaults. Players must use a client edition supported by the server software; Java and Bedrock are not interchangeable server packages.

Bedrock Dedicated Server: the published baseline
Minecraft’s official Bedrock download page gives concrete minimum figures. Treat them as eligibility guidance, not a promise that every world or player count will run smoothly.
| Requirement | Official Bedrock figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Core i3-3210, AMD A8-7600 APU, or equivalent | This is the listed CPU equivalent for the server package; larger or busier worlds need more processing headroom. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | The download page lists this system requirement. Its FAQ separately says at least 1 GB for small servers, so do not treat 1 GB as a replacement for the published 4 GB requirement. |
| Free storage | 180 MB to 1 GB | This is the stated available-space range for the software and initial data. World growth, backups, logs, and operating-system files require additional space. |
| Network | Broadband internet | Internet quality affects connection reliability and latency; the page does not promise a particular player capacity. |
| Linux | Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later | The current download page says other Linux distributions are unsupported. |
| Windows | Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later, or Windows Server 2016 or later | Use the current Windows version requirement shown on the download page when choosing a host. |
The FAQ’s “at least 1 GB of RAM for small servers” statement is useful context for a lightly used, small world, but it should not be read as a general recommendation for a production machine. The same page says larger worlds and more players require additional memory, storage, and processing power. Leave room for the operating system, backups, monitoring, and any other services on the machine.
Linux support has changed between documents
A Microsoft Learn tutorial describes Ubuntu 18 or later, Windows 10 version 1703 or later, and Windows Server 2016 or later, and states that Ubuntu is the only officially supported Linux distribution. The current Minecraft download page is more restrictive for download eligibility because it specifies Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later. For a new installation, follow the current download page; regard the older tutorial’s version numbers as tutorial context rather than a newer requirement.
Java Edition server requirements
The official Java server instructions identify the package as compatible with Java Edition and require a compatible Java Runtime Environment (JRE). They also tell operators to make sure Java can be run from the command line. The instructions do not publish a current table such as “X GB per player,” a universal CPU model, or a guaranteed player limit.
What determines Java capacity
- Concurrent players: More simultaneous connections increase tick, network, and world-processing work.
- World activity: Exploration that generates new chunks, automated farms, redstone machines, mobs, and entities can be more demanding than an inactive build area.
- View and simulation settings: Larger distances make the server load more chunks and entities for each player.
- Mods and plugins: Their code, databases, maps, and background tasks vary widely. A heavily modified server can need substantially more headroom than a vanilla world.
- Non-game processes: The operating system, control panels, voice chat, backups, and monitoring also consume CPU, memory, and storage.
For a small private world, begin with a modest machine, watch actual memory and CPU use during peak activity, and increase capacity when measurements show sustained pressure. A public server, a large group, or a mod-heavy pack should be sized with headroom rather than right at the minimum needed to launch. No official source establishes a reliable RAM-per-player formula, so treat calculators that promise one universal number with caution.

Java runtime and launch checks
- Download the Java server package from Minecraft’s official Java server page.
- Install a Java Runtime Environment compatible with the server version you intend to run.
- Open a terminal or command prompt and verify that Java is available with
java -version. - Follow the package’s first-launch and agreement instructions, then test the world locally before opening it to the internet.
The exact Java version must match the server software’s compatibility guidance. Installing a newer or older runtime at random can prevent the JAR from launching, so check the server page and its release notes for the version you selected.

The 2026 Java client article lists a 64-bit system, a four-core processor, Vulkan 1.3 graphics with at least 2 GB of VRAM, and either 8 GB of system RAM with a discrete GPU or 12 GB with integrated graphics for its minimum 1080p/30-FPS target. Its recommended 1080p/60-FPS target lists 16 GB of RAM and a stronger processor and GPU with 6 GB of VRAM.
| Figures | Applies to | Does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 8 GB RAM with discrete graphics; 12 GB with integrated graphics | Minimum Java client target at 1080p/30 FPS on Fast | Dedicated-server RAM, player capacity, or modpack support |
| 16 GB RAM | Recommended Java client target at 1080p/60 FPS on Fancy | A server requirement or a RAM-per-player rule |
| Four-core CPU and Vulkan 1.3 GPU requirements | Rendering and play on the client computer | The CPU or GPU specification needed to host a dedicated server |
A headless server may not need a gaming GPU at all, while the same computer might need one if it also runs a player’s client. Keep those roles separate when budgeting hardware.
How to choose RAM without inventing a player formula
RAM must cover the server process, loaded world data, Java or Bedrock overhead, the operating system, and every other service sharing the machine. The official Java documentation does not give a fixed allocation by player count, and Bedrock’s 4 GB figure is a published baseline rather than a guarantee.
Use workload tiers instead of slogans
- Private or very small world: Prioritize reliability and leave operating-system headroom. Measure memory while players explore, create farms, and generate new terrain, not only while the server is idle.
- Regular group: Test at the busiest expected simultaneous activity. Watch for swapping, long pauses, and rising tick times; those indicate that the host needs more available memory or less concurrent work.
- Large, public, or heavily modified world: Plan capacity, backups, and spare memory before opening it publicly. Mod and plugin documentation may add their own requirements, but there is no single official number that covers every combination.
Adding RAM cannot fix every slowdown. If memory remains available while one CPU core is saturated, faster single-thread performance or a lower simulation workload may matter more. Conversely, a fast processor cannot compensate for a system that continually runs out of memory.

CPU, storage, and network considerations
CPU
Server responsiveness depends on how quickly the server can advance game ticks, process entities, generate chunks, and handle player actions. Bedrock’s published i3-3210/A8-7600-equivalent baseline is the only concrete server CPU comparison in the official material here. Java has no equivalent official model or benchmark. Choose a modern, responsive processor with headroom for peak activity rather than judging only by the number of cores.
Storage
The Bedrock package lists 180 MB to 1 GB of available storage, but that is not a complete storage plan. Worlds grow as players explore; backups, crash logs, updates, and the operating system need space too. Use reliable storage and keep backups on a separate device or location so a failed disk does not destroy both the live world and its recovery copy.
Network and latency
Both editions need a network path that can carry player traffic consistently. Broadband is the Bedrock page’s requirement. Location matters: a host physically closer to the players generally reduces latency, but the quality and routing of the internet connection still matter. A wired Ethernet connection in a home setup is optional, not an official requirement; it can reduce local Wi-Fi variability when the host and router are nearby.
Opening a self-hosted server to other players
Running the software locally is only part of the job. Players outside your home network may need router port forwarding and firewall rules. The official Java FAQ gives port 25565 as an example and warns that network configuration may be required. Microsoft’s Bedrock guide documents 19132 for server-port and 19133 for server-portv6; those are defaults in that guide and can be changed in configuration.
- Install and start the correct edition’s server package. Confirm that the players’ clients use a compatible edition and version.
- Bind or configure the listening port. Keep a written record if you change the default so firewall and router rules use the same value.
- Create a host firewall rule. Permit only the configured game ports and the traffic type the server requires; do not disable the firewall wholesale.
- Forward the port on the router, if needed. Point it to the host’s local address. Router interfaces differ, so follow the router manufacturer’s current instructions.
- Test locally, then from an outside network. A local connection can succeed even when port forwarding, carrier-grade NAT, or an upstream firewall blocks internet access.
- Monitor and document. Record the server version, configuration, backup location, and who can administer the machine.
For Bedrock, keep client and server versions synchronized. Microsoft Learn warns that protocol versions can differ between minor versions and sometimes patch versions, producing version-mismatch errors. Update the server and coordinate client updates before inviting players back.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Software downloads are free from Minecraft, but operating a public server still has practical costs: hardware or a hosting bill, electricity, broadband, backups, administration time, and possible upgrades.
| Decision factor | Self-hosting | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | You install the runtime or server package and configure the operating system, firewall, and router. | The provider typically supplies an online control panel and infrastructure; verify exactly which edition and versions it supports. |
| Administration | You handle updates, permissions, logs, backups, security, and troubleshooting. | Some operational tasks may be simplified, but backup scope, support hours, and restoration procedures vary by provider. |
| Performance | Depends on your hardware, network, and other workloads; you control upgrades. | Compare the allocated CPU performance, memory limit, storage type, location, and fair-use rules rather than relying on a plan name. |
| Availability | Bound to your electricity, home internet, router, and maintenance schedule. | Often designed for always-on access, but check uptime commitments and maintenance policies. |
| Cost | Uses existing equipment but adds electricity, broadband, and replacement costs. | Recurring fees are predictable; compare them with the value of saved administration time and included backups. |
| Latency | Can be excellent for a local group if the home connection is strong. | Choose a data-center location close to the players and check network policies. |
Before paying for a plan, ask whether it supports Java, Bedrock, or both; which server software and versions are allowed; how much memory is actually allocated; whether backups are automatic and downloadable; how restoration works; and whether you can export the complete world. Those questions matter more than a headline player count.

Common failure modes and fixes
The server will not start
Check that the intended Java runtime is installed and visible to the command line for Java Edition. Players on the internet cannot connect
Test from inside and outside the home network. If local access works, check the configured port, host firewall, router forwarding target, and any upstream firewall or carrier-grade NAT. A forwarded port that does not match the server’s configuration will fail even when the process is running.
Players receive a version-mismatch error
Bring clients and the server to compatible versions, especially after a minor or patch update. Bedrock protocol differences can occur between those releases.
Recommended Free Tools
Lag appears only during exploration or busy farms
Observe CPU, memory, disk activity, and tick behavior during the event. Reduce simultaneous simulation work or increase the constrained resource; adding memory alone will not resolve a CPU bottleneck.
The world is lost after a failure
Restore from a backup that is separate from the live disk. Test a restoration periodically so you know the backup is complete and usable, and document who can perform the recovery.
A practical sizing checklist
- Identify Java or Bedrock and list every player’s platform.
- For Bedrock, meet the current page’s CPU, RAM, storage, broadband, and operating-system baseline.
- For Java, install a compatible JRE and size from observed workload instead of a made-up per-player rule.
- Reserve resources for the operating system, backups, logs, and administration tools.
- Estimate peak simultaneous activity, not only the average number of players.
- Choose storage that can hold world growth and more than one backup copy.
- Plan firewall and router rules before inviting outside players.
- Keep client and server versions aligned, especially for Bedrock.
- Compare self-hosting with managed hosting on allocated resources, location, backups, support, and total cost.
The Bottom Line
For Bedrock, use the official 4 GB RAM, i3-3210/A8-7600-equivalent CPU, 180 MB–1 GB storage, broadband, and current Windows or Ubuntu baseline as a starting point—not a player-capacity guarantee. For Java, the official guidance requires a compatible JRE but gives no universal RAM-per-player or CPU formula. Size either edition around peak workload, leave operating-system and backup headroom, keep versions compatible, and choose self-hosting or managed hosting based on how much network and administration work you want to own.
