Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
If your Minecraft server works on localhost but friends cannot join through your public IP, the server itself is only one part of the path. Check the layers in order: server process, local binding, LAN access, host firewall, router NAT, and finally your ISP’s network.
The most common fixes are leaving server-ip= blank, forwarding the configured Java port (normally TCP 25565) to the server computer’s private LAN address, and testing from a genuinely external network. A public-IP test from inside your own home can fail even when the setup is correct if the router does not support NAT loopback.
What the public-IP connection has to cross
A remote player does not connect directly to the private address of your gaming computer. The connection travels to your public IPv4 address, reaches your router or gateway, passes its firewall and NAT rule, and is then delivered to the server computer on the home LAN.
| Address or setting | What it is used for | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| Loopback address | Testing a server on the same computer | localhost |
| Private LAN address | Connecting from another device in the same home network | 192.168.1.50 or 10.0.0.25 |
| Public WAN address | What players outside your home enter | 12.34.56.78:25565 |
| Listening port | The port on which the server accepts game traffic | Java default: 25565 |
| Forward destination | The device that receives traffic after NAT | The server’s private LAN address, never the public address |
Each layer can fail independently. A successful localhost connection proves that a process answered on the host; it does not prove that another LAN device can reach it, that the router forwards traffic, or that the ISP allows inbound connections.

1. Prove that the intended server works locally
Launch the correct JAR from its server directory
Start the server from the folder containing the intended server JAR and its configuration files. Watch the console until it reports that the world is loaded and the server is ready. If the process exits, shows a Java error, has not accepted the EULA, or is loading a different folder than the one you edited, public-IP troubleshooting is premature.
- Open the server directory.
- Launch the intended server JAR with the Java runtime required by that server version.
- Accept the EULA in the generated
eula.txtonly if you agree to it. - Wait for the ready message, then connect on the host using
localhost.
Minecraft Help identifies localhost as the correct address when the player and server are on the same computer. If this test fails, fix the Java installation, JAR selection, EULA, world files, or startup error before changing router settings.

Check the binding and port in server.properties
For a normal home server, leave the value after server-ip= empty:
server-ip=
server-port=25565
A blank server-ip lets the server listen on the machine’s available network interfaces. Setting it to an address that is not currently assigned to the computer is a common cause of Failed to bind to port!. It can also prevent access through the interface you actually need.
Use a different server-port only when you have a deliberate reason and the selected port is unused. Save the file and restart the server after every change; the running process does not reliably adopt edits made while it is active.
Resolve “Failed to bind to port!”
This message is a local process or interface problem, not a port-forwarding problem. Work through these checks:
- Clear
server-ip=and restart. - Confirm that the address you entered, if any, is an active address on this computer.
- Close a second Minecraft server or wrapper that may already be using the same port.
- Check for another application listening on the configured port.
On Windows, an administrator Command Prompt can show listeners with:

netstat -ano | findstr :25565
On Linux, use:
ss -lntp | grep 25565
Replace 25565 with your actual configured port. A listener belonging to the intended server should appear after startup. Do not forward a port until the server is listening successfully.
2. Test from another device on the same LAN
Find the server computer’s private IPv4 address. Windows shows it with ipconfig; macOS and Linux network settings or ip addr show the active interface. Use the address from the same home network, such as 192.168.1.50, on a second computer.
- Connect the second device to the same router or access point.
- Enter the server computer’s private IPv4 address and the configured port, for example
192.168.1.50:25565. - Observe whether the client joins, refuses immediately, or waits and times out.
If LAN access fails, the Internet cannot work yet. The likely causes are an incorrect bind, the wrong private address, a host firewall rule, the wrong port, client isolation on the Wi-Fi network, or a server process that is not actually listening. A router’s WAN forward cannot repair a failure between two devices that are already inside the home.

Routers normally assign private addresses with DHCP. After a reboot, the server might receive a different address while the forwarding rule still points to the old one. Create a DHCP reservation for the server computer in the router, or configure a static LAN address using values appropriate for that network. Record the reserved address and use it as the forward destination.
Do not put the public IP in the router’s “internal host,” “server,” or “destination” field. The public address identifies the router from the Internet; the rule must deliver traffic to the server’s private LAN address.
3. Allow the server through the host firewall
The operating system can block a connection even when the server is listening and the router is configured correctly. Permit the Java runtime or server application and the exact configured port on the network profile used by the host.
- Allow inbound traffic for the server’s Java executable or dedicated server application.
- Allow the configured Java port, normally TCP
25565, on the correct private or home network profile. - If you intentionally use another port, create the rule for that port instead of opening a broad range.
- Check both the operating-system firewall and any security suite that performs network filtering.
Temporarily disabling firewall protection can be a short diagnostic test: if LAN access immediately starts working, re-enable protection and create a narrow inbound rule. Do not leave the host unprotected or expose all ports simply because a broad disablement appeared to help. Java setup guidance and Geyser documentation both identify firewall and network filtering as connection boundaries.

4. Create the router port-forwarding rule
Forward the game port to the reserved LAN address
Sign in to the router or gateway that actually holds the public WAN address. Look for a section labeled Port Forwarding, NAT, Virtual Server, or Inbound Rules. Manufacturer labels differ, but the values have the same meaning.
| Router field | Value for a default Java server |
|---|---|
| External/WAN port | 25565 |
| Internal/LAN port | 25565 |
| Internal host or destination | The server’s reserved private IPv4 address, such as 192.168.1.50 |
| Protocol | TCP for Java Edition |
| Enabled | Yes |
Minecraft Help and the Minecraft Wiki both state that the server port must be forwarded when the host is behind NAT or a home router/firewall. The configured value in server.properties is authoritative; 25565 is only the default. If you changed the port, forward that exact value or deliberately map a different external port to it and tell players to use the external one.
The same guide refers to forwarding the port listed in server.properties query settings. Query traffic is separate from ordinary player connections; only enable and forward a query port when you use a tool that requires server-query access. A normal Java player still needs the game listener’s configured server-port.
Check for a second router
If your home has an ISP gateway in front of your own router, you have double NAT. A rule on the inner router may never receive unsolicited traffic because the outer gateway is still blocking it.

- Compare the WAN/Internet IPv4 displayed by your router with the public IPv4 shown by an independent public-IP service.
- If the router’s WAN address is private, such as
192.168.x.x,10.x.x.x, or172.16.x.xthrough172.31.x.x, another NAT device is upstream. - Place the forward on the upstream device as well, put the ISP gateway into bridge or passthrough mode where supported, or configure the inner router as the exposed host only with a clear understanding of the security implications.
Some providers use carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), where the address shown to your router is shared upstream and cannot receive unsolicited inbound IPv4 traffic. In that case, router changes alone cannot create a reachable public server. Ask the ISP for a real public IPv4 if available, or use managed hosting or a VPN-style access service that provides an inbound path.
5. Use the correct address and test from outside
Give remote Java players the public address
Players outside your home enter the public IPv4 followed by the external port:
12.34.56.78:25565
They may omit :25565 only when the server uses the default port and the client accepts the shortened form. If you chose a different external port, the suffix is required. The host computer should continue using localhost or its private LAN address for local play.

Do not trust an inside-the-LAN public-IP test
Many routers do not support NAT loopback, also called hairpin NAT. A device inside the same home can therefore fail to reach the home’s public address even though a friend on the Internet would succeed. A failed test from your own Wi-Fi is not conclusive.
Use a friend’s connection, a phone hotspot with Wi-Fi disabled on the phone, or another external network. Do not test from a device that is still connected to the home router. If the external test works, keep using the LAN address at home and the public address remotely.
6. Distinguish Java, Bedrock, and Geyser traffic
Edition and protocol determine both the listener and the forwarding rule. Java Edition normally uses TCP. Bedrock Edition uses UDP. A Bedrock player cannot reach a Java TCP listener merely by entering the same public IP and port.
| Client/server path | Typical protocol | Port to expose | What must be running |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java client to Java server | TCP | Configured server-port, normally 25565 |
Java server listener and TCP firewall/forward |
| Bedrock client through Geyser | UDP | Geyser listener, commonly 19132 when unchanged |
Geyser and its UDP firewall/forward |
Geyser documentation notes that a frequent failure is opening only TCP while Bedrock requires UDP. For a Geyser setup, verify the listener port in Geyser’s configuration, allow UDP on the host firewall, and forward that same UDP port to the server computer. Keep the Java TCP rule as well if Java players also connect.

The correct value is the active Geyser listener, which may have been changed from the commonly documented 19132 default.
7. Read the error symptom as a routing clue
| Symptom | What it usually indicates | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Timeout | Traffic was dropped, filtered, sent to the wrong address, or never forwarded | External test, WAN/public-IP comparison, router rule, upstream NAT, firewall, and protocol |
| Connection refused | The destination was reachable but no service accepted that port, or an intermediate device actively rejected it | Server listener, configured port, TCP versus UDP, and whether the rule targets the right host |
| Unknown host | The address is malformed or a hostname/DNS/SRV record is wrong | Re-enter the numeric public IP and port; remove accidental spaces or punctuation |
| Failed to bind to port | The local process cannot claim the selected interface or port | Blank server-ip, duplicate server process, and port ownership |
| Works on localhost only | Server process works, but LAN binding, firewall, or interface selection is still wrong | Test the private LAN address from a second device |
| Works on LAN but not externally | The server and host firewall are probably functional; NAT, upstream routing, ISP filtering, or test location is the likely boundary | External-network test, port forward, WAN address, double NAT, and CGNAT |
These are clues rather than proof. Always confirm the suspected layer with localhost, LAN, and external tests instead of changing several settings at once.

- Start the intended server. Confirm the console reaches its ready state and connect from the host with
localhost. - Normalize the configuration. Leave
server-ip=blank, verify the intendedserver-port, save, and restart. - Verify the listener. Use the operating system’s listener command and confirm the expected port belongs to the server process.
- Test the private address. Join from another device on the same LAN using the server computer’s private IPv4 and port.
- Fix host filtering. Allow the Java or Geyser process and the exact TCP or UDP port on the active network profile.
- Reserve the address. Ensure DHCP cannot move the server to a different private IPv4.
- Forward the port. Map the external port and correct protocol to the reserved private address.
- Identify the public edge. Confirm that the router containing the rule has the public WAN address, or configure the upstream gateway too.
- Test externally. Use a friend’s network or a phone hotspot, not the same home Wi-Fi.
- Match edition and protocol. Add the Geyser UDP rule for Bedrock and retain the Java TCP rule when both editions are supported.
Change one layer at a time and record the result. For example, if LAN access begins working after a firewall rule is added, leave router settings untouched until that local proof is complete.
9. When self-hosting is not the practical fix
Self-hosting is reasonable when you control a stable public IPv4, can create inbound NAT rules, and are comfortable maintaining the server and firewall. It is a poor fit when CGNAT prevents inbound traffic, an ISP gateway cannot be bridged or forwarded, the public address changes constantly, or you do not want your home IP exposed.
In those cases, use one of these operational alternatives:
- Request a public IPv4 or an inbound-service option from the ISP.
- Use a managed Minecraft host that supplies an Internet-reachable endpoint.
- Use a private VPN-style network that lets invited players reach the server without opening a public router port.
These approaches change the network path; they do not fix a server that cannot start locally. Prove the server and LAN layers first so you do not move a local configuration problem to another environment.
Security before you open the port
A public listener increases the attack surface of your home network. Share the public address only with intended players and keep the operating system, Java runtime, server software, plugins, and mods patched. Use a narrow firewall rule for the actual port, avoid forwarding administrative services, and remove the rule when the server is no longer needed.
Keep backups of the world and configuration files before changing plugins or server versions. If you use a query port or other optional listener, expose it only when a specific tool requires it. A working port forward is not a substitute for authentication, trusted players, and routine maintenance.
