Pay for the resources your world actually uses, not an “unlimited slots” headline. A small vanilla server for friends can run on a low-RAM tier, while modpacks, plugins, high simulation distance and many simultaneous players require more memory, stronger CPU allocation and reliable backups. Current published examples range from roughly $4 per month for an entry plan to more than $100 per month at renewal for a 32GB plan. The figures below separate promotional, first-month and recurring prices so you can compare the real cost.

Quick comparison: which plan type fits?

Use case What to prioritize Published options that match Budget evidence
Vanilla server for a few friends Enough RAM, nearby location, backups and a clear renewal price Shockbyte entry tiers; Apex 2GB tier Shockbyte Dirt was reviewed at about $4/month for 1GB and eight slots; Apex 2GB was reported at $5.99 for the first month and $7.99 recurring.
Plugins or light modding More RAM, one-click installers, dependable support and rollback backups Shockbyte, Apex or a configurable BisectHosting instance Shockbyte advertises mod/plugin installers; Apex includes one-click pack installers; BisectHosting advertises configurable and daily backups.
Large modpack or public community RAM and CPU headroom, modpack automation, backup controls and support response BisectHosting plans with its Instance Manager; higher-memory tiers elsewhere BisectHosting documents more than 2,300 modpacks and 24/7/365 support with an advertised 15-minute average response.
Java and Bedrock players together Explicit edition support or crossplay implementation Shockbyte or BisectHosting Shockbyte documents Java and Bedrock server types; BisectHosting advertises Java/Bedrock crossplay.

These are published features and review figures, not a controlled test of identical worlds. No source establishes that one provider is universally fastest or least laggy.

How Minecraft hosting is priced

Promotional, first-month and renewal prices are different

A low checkout figure may be an introductory discount. Keep three numbers separate: the advertised promotion, the first-month price and the recurring renewal price. For example, a TechRadar review lists Apex Hosting’s 2GB plan at $5.99 for the first month and $7.99 thereafter. Its 8GB plan is listed at $20.99 initially and $27.99 recurring, while the reviewed 32GB option is $77.99 initially and $103.99 recurring.

A separate August 7, 2026 pricing guide lists regular monthly starting prices of $3.99 for Shockbyte, $5.99 for BisectHosting and $7.99 for Apex Hosting. Those are starting figures across their product ranges, not guaranteed prices for a particular location, billing cycle or resource tier. Confirm the renewal amount on the final order screen.

What the monthly fee should include

  • Allocated RAM and the CPU policy for that tier.
  • Storage type and whether storage is capped or described as unlimited.
  • Automatic or configurable backups, including retention.
  • DDoS protection and the network locations available to you.
  • Server-type installers for Vanilla, Paper, Forge, Fabric or Bedrock where applicable.
  • Support hours, response expectations and the refund window.

A dedicated IP, extra storage, migration help or advanced management can be an add-on. The TechRadar review of Shockbyte’s entry plan specifically notes that dedicated IP and server-management options cost extra.

Published plan evidence by provider

Shockbyte

Shockbyte’s provider page lists promotional examples of $13.99 per month for 5GB RAM, $22.39 for 8GB, $33.59 for 12GB and $47.48 for a custom 17GB-or-more plan. These are promotional figures attached to the listed configurations, so they should not be confused with the $3.99 regular starting price reported in the 2026 comparison guide.

The same provider documentation advertises instant setup, 99.9% uptime, 24/7 support, DDoS protection and a 72-hour self-serve refund. One-click installers cover Paper, CraftBukkit, Forge, Vanilla and Bedrock server types. The documentation also names CurseForge, Feed The Beast, Technic and ATLauncher ecosystems, and says Java and Bedrock versions receive automatic updates.

A TechRadar review describes the entry Dirt plan as 1GB RAM, eight player slots and about $4 per month, with the reviewed range extending to 16GB and unlimited slots. The review’s practical warning is important: choose by expected players and RAM, because a nominal slot count does not remove memory or CPU limits.

BisectHosting

BisectHosting’s current provider page emphasizes breadth and management rather than a single representative configuration. It advertises more than 2,300 modpacks, an Instance Manager, full FTP access, configurable and daily backups, and three days of previous backups. It also advertises free DDoS protection, Java/Bedrock crossplay, 21 worldwide locations and free location switching through BisectOne.

Apex Hosting

The TechRadar review gives unusually clear first-month versus recurring examples. Its 2GB plan is $5.99 for the first month and $7.99 to renew; 8GB is $20.99 initially and $27.99 recurring; and the reviewed 32GB option is $77.99 initially and $103.99 recurring. Plans include unlimited nominal player slots, DDoS protection, automated backups, a free subdomain, one-click pack installers and unlimited storage.

Apex also offers an EX Series configuration with 16GB RAM, a Ryzen 9 5900X processor, NVMe SSD storage, premium support and a dedicated IP. The review does not establish a controlled performance advantage for that hardware, so consider it a specification and support upgrade rather than a guaranteed reduction in lag.

How much RAM and CPU do you need?

RAM is the first sizing signal, but it is not the only one. Minecraft’s world size, simulation distance, entity count, mod complexity, plugin behavior and backup process all affect resource use. CPU performance and the host’s allocation policy determine how quickly the server can process ticks; providers do not publish directly comparable CPU allocations in the evidence available here.

Server type Starting point Why you may need more
Small Vanilla world for a few friends About 1–2GB RAM Increase memory for higher view or simulation distance, farms, exploration and more simultaneous players.
Plugins or light modding About 2–4GB RAM Plugin overhead, map tools, permissions, claims and additional worlds consume memory and CPU time.
Medium modpack About 4–8GB RAM Large Forge or Fabric packs, chunk generation and automation systems can require substantial headroom.
Large modpack or community 8GB and up, sized after testing Many players, custom worlds, voice or web integrations and frequent exploration increase both memory and tick load.

The ranges above are planning starting points, not guarantees from a benchmark. Watch the server console, tick-time warnings, memory utilization and player experience after adding the actual pack. If memory remains near its limit during normal play, move up one tier; if tick time is high while memory is comfortable, seek stronger CPU allocation rather than only more RAM.

Java, Bedrock and crossplay

Choose the edition your players use

Java Edition is the usual target for PC modpacks and many plugin ecosystems. Bedrock covers Windows, consoles and mobile devices. A host that supports both editions may provide separate server types, while “crossplay” generally means a compatibility layer lets Bedrock clients join a Java server. Verify the implementation, supported versions and plugin or mod limitations before paying.

Shockbyte documents Java and Bedrock server types and automatic updates. BisectHosting advertises Java/Bedrock crossplay and explicitly markets support for PC and console players. Do not infer crossplay from an “unlimited slots” claim or from a generic Minecraft logo.

Modpacks, plugins and installation workflow

For a few plugins

  1. Choose a server type such as Paper or another platform compatible with the plugins you need.
  2. Use the host’s one-click installer when available, then check the exact Minecraft version and plugin versions.
  3. Upload configuration files through FTP or the provider’s file manager.
  4. Restart once, read the console for dependency errors and test with an administrator account before inviting everyone.

Shockbyte documents one-click installers for Paper, CraftBukkit, Forge, Vanilla and Bedrock. Apex documents one-click pack installers. These tools reduce setup time but do not guarantee that every mod combination is compatible.

For a large modpack

  1. Confirm the loader (Forge, Fabric or another required platform), Minecraft version and Java runtime expected by the pack.
  2. Check the host’s catalog for the exact pack release rather than installing a similarly named pack.
  3. Allocate memory with headroom for world generation and first joins; do not assign every available gigabyte to Java.
  4. Make a manual backup before changing the pack, then retain a known-good copy.
  5. Use staged testing: load the world alone, then with two or three players, then open it to the full group.

BisectHosting’s advertised catalog of more than 2,300 modpacks and its Instance Manager are particularly relevant when you switch between packs or maintain several instances. Its configurable and daily backups, including three days of previous backups, also reduce the risk of an unsuccessful update.

Location, latency and network protection

Pick a data-center region close to most players. Distance cannot be fixed with more RAM. When players are spread across continents, choose the location that minimizes the worst connection rather than optimizing for only the server owner.

DDoS protection helps absorb malicious traffic; it does not cure an overloaded CPU, a bad plugin or a distant location. Shockbyte, BisectHosting and Apex all advertise DDoS protection in the cited provider or review material.

Backups, support and refunds: the safeguards that matter

Backups

Prefer scheduled backups with visible retention and a simple restore process. “Automated backups” does not tell you how many copies exist or whether they are stored separately from the live server. BisectHosting states that backups can be configurable and daily, with three days of previous backups. Apex advertises automated backups without the cited review specifying retention. Ask for retention details if a world would be costly to rebuild.

Support

Support is most valuable during a failed update, corrupted world or mod dependency conflict. Shockbyte advertises 24/7 support; BisectHosting advertises 24/7/365 support and a 15-minute average response; Apex’s EX Series adds premium support. These are service claims, not independent measurements. Check whether support can troubleshoot server software or only billing and infrastructure.

Refund terms

Shockbyte advertises a 72-hour self-serve refund. A separate VPS offering described in the 2026 guide advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee, but that guarantee belongs to the VPS product and may not apply to every Minecraft plan. Read the plan-specific exclusions before relying on a refund window.

A buying checklist that prevents expensive mistakes

  1. Count real simultaneous players. Ignore inactive whitelist members and use the highest number likely to be online together.
  2. Identify the workload. Vanilla, plugins, a light modpack and a large modpack are different resource classes.
  3. Confirm edition support. Verify Java, Bedrock or crossplay for the versions your group owns.
  4. Compare renewal prices. Put promotional, first-month and recurring figures in separate columns.
  5. Check CPU information. If the host only states RAM, ask what CPU share or processor generation applies to the tier.
  6. Verify backups. Look for schedule, retention, off-server storage and one-click restore.
  7. Select a nearby region. Test latency with players from the locations that matter.
  8. Read refund exclusions. Note deadlines, setup fees, add-ons and whether cancellations are self-service.
  9. Test before expanding. Start with a realistic save and workload; upgrade only when measurements show the need.

Common traps and how to fix them

“Unlimited slots” means unlimited performance

It does not. Apex’s plans and Shockbyte’s higher tiers advertise unlimited nominal slots, but RAM, CPU time and network capacity still constrain the number of players the world can serve smoothly. Fix this by sizing from workload and monitoring tick time.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The cheapest headline price is the cheapest long-term plan

It may be a promotion or a first-month rate. Fix this by calculating twelve months at the recurring price, then adding any required IP, management or backup upgrades.

More RAM fixes every lag problem

It does not fix distant players, a slow CPU allocation, a runaway plugin or excessive simulation distance. Fix the bottleneck shown by server metrics before upgrading.

A modpack installer guarantees compatibility

Installers simplify files and configuration; they cannot make incompatible loaders, versions or client mods work together. Pin the pack version and test a backup copy first.

Bottom line

For a small vanilla group, start with the lowest tier that covers your real player count and has a renewal price you can accept; the reviewed 1GB Shockbyte entry plan and Apex’s 2GB tier illustrate the low end. Move to 4–8GB when plugins or modpacks become central. For large modpacks or communities, prioritize CPU headroom, backup retention, instance management and support over the cheapest advertisement; BisectHosting’s documented modpack catalog and management tools are built around that use case. If Java and Bedrock players must share one world, choose a host that explicitly documents the required server type or crossplay rather than assuming every Minecraft plan supports it.
