What are scutes in Minecraft?
“Scute” is the name of a shell-like item obtained from certain mobs. For this guide, the relevant item is the armadillo scute, which comes from brushing an armadillo. It is not the same item as a turtle scute.
Armadillo scutes have a focused role rather than a long list of crafting uses. Their main purpose is making wolf armor for a tamed wolf. Once a wolf is wearing armor, additional scutes can be used to repair it. The armor can also be dyed, and shears can remove it.

How to get armadillo scutes
1. Find a savanna or badlands biome
Armadillos spawn in savanna and badlands biomes. If you are not finding one, move between those biome types rather than searching ordinary plains, forests, or deserts. Biome names can vary slightly by terrain variant in a given world, so use the biome label shown by your edition’s debug or map tools when available.
Once you find an armadillo, keep the area accessible. You need to use a brush on the mob repeatedly if you are collecting several scutes, and a nearby safe enclosure can make the process easier. The research for this guide does not establish a required enclosure, lead, or trap design, so use whatever basic animal-handling setup is practical in your world.

- One feather
- One copper ingot
- One stick
Place those materials in a crafting table according to the brush recipe shown in your edition’s recipe book. The ingredients are established; the exact arrangement should be confirmed in-game if your interface does not show the recipe automatically.
Brushes wear out quickly. Craft at least one spare before making a dedicated scute-gathering trip, especially if the armadillo is far from your base. Running out of durability does not create a new way to obtain scutes; it simply stops that brush from being useful until you replace it.
3. Brush the armadillo
- Hold the brush in your hotbar.
- Face the armadillo and use the brush interaction for your platform (right-click with the default mouse controls).
- Collect the scute item that drops.
- Repeat with a fresh brush when the first one wears out.
Brushing is the active and generally faster collection method. Current summaries disagree about the exact yield: one claims four scutes per brush use in Java Edition and five in Bedrock Edition, but those figures were not confirmed by a primary page. Do not plan a project around a fixed yield until you test the behavior in the exact version you are playing.

4. Account for natural shedding
Armadillos can shed scutes on their own, without being brushed. One guide describes the interval as roughly every few minutes, but that timing is unverified and should not be treated as a guaranteed cooldown. Passive shedding is useful while you are nearby doing other work, but brushing is the dependable method when you need scutes immediately.

One wolf-armor set uses six scutes. That is the only firmly established quantity for the armor recipe. You will need additional scutes if you expect to repair the armor later, because each scute restores only part of the armor’s durability.
Because the brush yield is not confirmed consistently between editions, the safest planning method is to collect at least six scutes first, then continue gathering a reserve for repairs. If you are preparing armor for more than one wolf, multiply the six-scute cost by the number of sets and add a separate repair reserve.

Equip the armor on a tamed wolf
Wolf armor is intended for tamed wolves. A wild wolf will not accept it. After taming the wolf, place the armor in your hand and use the interaction on the wolf (right-click with default mouse controls). The armor is then visible on that wolf and has its own durability that can be repaired with more scutes.
If the interaction does nothing, check the two most common causes first: the wolf is not tamed, or the item in your hand is not wolf armor. A scute by itself is a material and will not equip directly.
How to repair wolf armor with scutes
Scutes repair damaged wolf armor in two ways. The direct method is useful in the field; the anvil method is useful when you are already repairing equipment at a base.
Repair directly on the wolf
- Make sure the wolf is wearing damaged wolf armor.
- Hold one or more armadillo scutes.
- Use the interaction on the armored wolf.
- Check the armor’s durability and repeat as needed.
Each scute restores only part of the armor’s durability, so a badly damaged set may consume several scutes. The exact amount restored per scute is not established in the available evidence; do not assume that one scute completely repairs a set.
Repair at an anvil
- Open an anvil.
- Place the damaged wolf armor in the appropriate input slot.
- Add armadillo scutes as the repair material.
- Take the repaired armor from the output slot if the anvil accepts the combination.
An anvil is an alternative when you prefer an inventory-based repair workflow. If the output is unavailable, verify that the item is wolf armor, the material is an armadillo scute, and the armor is actually damaged.

Can wolf armor be dyed?
Wolf armor can be dyed, but the reported procedure differs by edition. One guide describes using a crafting grid in Java Edition and a cauldron in Bedrock Edition. That edition distinction was not confirmed by a primary page, so use the instructions displayed by your current game’s recipe book and item interaction prompts.
Before dyeing valuable armor, test the method with one set and keep a spare set of scutes available. Dyeing changes the armor’s appearance; it does not replace the need for scutes when the armor later loses durability.

How to remove wolf armor
Use shears on the wolf wearing the armor. The shears remove the armor rather than requiring you to defeat or retame the wolf. After removal, pick up the armor and store it safely if you intend to repair or recolor it later.
If shears do not remove the armor, confirm that you are targeting the armored wolf itself and that the item in your hand is shears rather than another tool. Interaction controls vary with platform, so the use button may not be the same as the default PC right-click.

Armadillos, wolf armor, and armadillo scutes were introduced with Java Edition 1.20.5, the update associated with “Armored Paws.” A Java world running an earlier version will not contain these items or mobs unless it has been upgraded to a release that includes them.

Bedrock Edition

Why version checks matter
Edition and version affect more than whether the mob exists. The exact scute yield, crafting-grid arrangement, and dyeing workflow are all reported inconsistently. Armadillo scutes versus turtle scutes
Turtle scutes are a separate item. The armadillo scute used for wolf armor cannot be substituted with a turtle scute, and a turtle scute is not obtained by brushing an armadillo.
