Minecraft scaffolding is a temporary, climbable building aid. Craft six blocks from six bamboo and one string, place one on the ground, and use the bottom block to extend the tower upward. You can climb and descend it like a ladder, then remove the bottom block to collapse the connected tower. Mojang reports that each block smelts two items in Java Edition or six items in Bedrock Edition.
What scaffolding is and why it is useful
Scaffolding is designed for temporary access while you build, repair or reach high areas. Instead of constructing a permanent staircase or a solid column, you can create a tower, climb through it, work at the required height, and remove the base when the job is finished.
Recommended Free Tools
The block behaves differently from an ordinary solid building block. Mojang describes scaffolding as having no collision detection and says that players can climb and descend it like a ladder. That makes it practical for vertical work, but it also means you should treat an unfinished tower as access equipment rather than as a permanent wall or floor.
Scaffolding was added in Minecraft 1.14, the Village & Pillage Update. The basic recipe and the bottom-up placement method remain the key mechanics to remember.

Materials and crafting output
| Ingredient or result | Quantity | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Bamboo | 6 | Required for one craft |
| String | 1 | Required for one craft |
| Scaffolding | 6 | Output from the recipe |
The recipe uses six bamboo and one string to produce six scaffolding blocks. The six-for-six output is important when estimating supplies: every complete recipe gives you six blocks, not one.
How to craft scaffolding
- Collect at least six bamboo and one string. Put the ingredients in your inventory before opening the crafting interface.
- Open a crafting table so you have the 3-by-3 crafting grid required by the recipe.
- Arrange the six bamboo and one string in the scaffolding recipe pattern shown by your recipe book or crafting interface. If you use the recipe book, select scaffolding after the required materials are available.
- Take the six scaffolding blocks from the output slot and move them into your inventory.
If you need a taller tower, multiply the number of recipes before you begin. For example, 18 blocks require three crafts, which means 18 bamboo and three string. In general, divide the number of blocks you want by six and round up to find the number of crafts; then multiply that craft count by six for bamboo and by one for string.

The reliable method is to start at ground level and build upward from the bottom block. Mojang’s instructions describe placing one block on the ground, then using that bottom block again to place another scaffolding block on top.
- Stand where you want the tower to begin and select scaffolding in your hotbar.
- Use your platform’s normal place or use control on the ground. On Java Edition this is the right mouse button by default; on a controller or touchscreen, use the corresponding place/use button.
- Keep the first block in view and use it again to add a second block above it.
- Repeat the use action on the lowest reachable scaffolding block to extend the column to the height you need.
- Stop adding blocks when the work area is reachable. Leaving extra blocks above the work site only creates more material to remove later.
Building from the bottom is the simplest approach because each new placement is tied to the existing tower. Detailed side-placement and support-distance behavior can differ by edition and version; the cited Mojang guidance does not define every edge case. When a placement attempt behaves unexpectedly, return to the bottom-up method rather than assuming that a side placement will work identically in Java and Bedrock.

How to climb scaffolding
Scaffolding can be climbed and descended like a ladder. Move into the tower and use your normal movement controls to go upward or downward. Because the block has no collision detection, it does not feel like climbing a solid column or a conventional staircase.
- Use the tower as a vertical route between the ground and the current construction level.
- Keep your crosshair and camera aimed where you intend to place the next block or building component.
- When you reach the work height, build from the scaffolding-supported position instead of extending the tower farther than necessary.
- Descend through the same tower before dismantling its base.
For a temporary project, place the tower close enough to the work face that you can reach the blocks you need without turning it into a permanent structure. If a tower is difficult to use, check that you actually placed a continuous column and that you are targeting scaffolding rather than an adjacent block.

Using scaffolding during construction
Exterior walls and roofs
Build a narrow access tower beside the wall, climb to the relevant level, and use the elevated position to place blocks along the façade or roof edge. Move the tower as the work advances instead of filling the entire area with permanent blocks.
Tall interior spaces
In a high-ceiling room, scaffolding gives you a temporary route to beams, lighting positions and upper decoration. Its climbable form is more direct than constructing a staircase that would remain in the finished room.

Inspection and repair
Use a short tower to inspect a roofline, trim, bridge or other elevated detail. Once the repair is complete, remove the bottom block and collect the falling scaffolding rather than leaving a service structure behind.
Moving the work platform
For a long wall, treat scaffolding as a movable work platform. Build only the height and length needed for the next section, complete that section, then dismantle and rebuild at the next position. This limits the number of blocks tied up in temporary access.
How to take down a scaffolding tower
The fastest cleanup method is to remove the bottom block. Mojang explains that knocking out the bottom block causes the whole connected tower to come crashing down. This is why scaffolding is efficient for temporary access: you do not have to break every block from the top downward.
- Finish the construction task and descend to the base of the tower.
- Make sure you are not still relying on the tower for access to an unfinished area.
- Break the lowest scaffolding block in the connected stack.
- Allow the tower to collapse, then collect the dropped scaffolding.
- Check the work area for any separate scaffolding sections that were not connected to the removed base.
If only part of a structure falls, the remaining blocks were not part of the same connected tower or were separated by another block. Remove the lowest block of each remaining connected section.

Scaffolding as furnace fuel
Mojang’s published figure is edition-specific: one scaffolding block smelts two items in Java Edition and six items in Bedrock Edition. These are per-block fuel outputs, so the theoretical totals for a stack of supplied blocks are:
| Edition | Smelted items per scaffolding block | Example total for 6 blocks |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | 2 | 12 items |
| Bedrock Edition | 6 | 36 items |
The six-block example is simple multiplication of Mojang’s stated per-block rates. It does not change the recipe: the same six scaffolding blocks can either support a construction project or be placed in a furnace as fuel. Because scaffolding is often reusable during building, using it as fuel makes the most sense when you have more blocks than the project requires or when cleanup has left you with surplus material.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition: what is established
| Mechanic | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Recipe ingredients | 6 bamboo and 1 string | 6 bamboo and 1 string |
| Recipe output | 6 scaffolding blocks | 6 scaffolding blocks |
| Basic placement method | Place on the ground, then use the bottom block to extend upward | Place on the ground, then use the bottom block to extend upward |
| Climbing | Climb and descend like a ladder | Climb and descend like a ladder |
| Collapse behavior | Breaking the bottom connected block collapses the tower | Breaking the bottom connected block collapses the tower |

The shared recipe, climbability and bottom-block collapse are the dependable cross-edition fundamentals. Do not assume that every placement edge case is identical merely because the main recipe is. If you are testing a side placement, a long extension or another unusual arrangement, identify your edition and game version first and verify the result in that environment.
Planning a temporary access tower
Before placing blocks
- Decide the highest work point and count how many vertical blocks you are likely to need.
- Reserve enough inventory space to collect the tower after it collapses.
- Choose a base position that does not obstruct the doorway, redstone area or other route you still need to use.
- Keep spare scaffolding available if the build requires repeated repositioning.
While building
- Extend upward from the bottom block rather than experimenting with unsupported placement when speed matters.
- Use the tower only for the current work area; avoid constructing a taller column than necessary.
- Pause before breaking the base and confirm that no player or essential work position still depends on it.
After the job
- Break the lowest block to trigger the collapse.
- Collect the dropped blocks and count them against your next material estimate.
- Put any excess into storage or, if you no longer need it, use the edition-appropriate furnace-fuel value.
Troubleshooting common problems
The recipe does not appear
Check the ingredient count first: one craft needs six bamboo and one string. Confirm that you are using a crafting table and that the recipe book is showing recipes for the edition and version you are playing. If the ingredients are present but the output is still unavailable, place them through the crafting interface’s displayed recipe rather than relying on a remembered grid arrangement.

A second block will not appear above the first
Target the existing bottom scaffolding block and use the place control again. Make sure the first block was actually placed and that another block, fluid or obstruction is not occupying the destination. If the attempted placement is a side or extended arrangement, return to a direct bottom-up column; detailed edge-case rules are edition-dependent.
The tower is hard to climb
Confirm that the blocks form one continuous scaffolding tower and that you are entering the scaffolding itself. A gap, an intervening block or a mistaken target can interrupt the route. Reposition your character at the base and try the normal upward movement controls again.
Only part of the tower collapsed
The blocks that remain are not connected to the bottom block you removed. Find the lowest block of each separate section and break those bases individually.
You cannot find the blocks after collapse
Look around the tower’s base and nearby ledges for the dropped items. If you planned to reuse the material, leave room in your inventory before removing the base so collected blocks do not become difficult to manage.
How scaffolding fits into a build’s material budget
Scaffolding is unusually easy to budget because the recipe output is fixed at six blocks. If a project needs a single six-block tower, one recipe covers it. A 12-block tower needs two recipes, while a 20-block tower needs four recipes and produces 24 blocks, leaving four blocks for a later adjustment. That extra capacity can be useful when the exact height is uncertain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not count only the blocks in the final tower height. Temporary side moves, replacement towers and separate access points can consume additional blocks. A practical plan is to estimate the tallest tower first, add the blocks needed for repositioning, and then round the total up to a multiple of six.
History and version context
Scaffolding entered the game in Minecraft 1.14, known as the Village & Pillage Update. Duncan Geere’s Mojang article, published April 16, 2020, describes the six-bamboo-and-string recipe, the bottom-up placement method, ladder-like climbing, bottom-block collapse and the different Java and Bedrock fuel yields. Those edition labels matter: the fuel numbers are not interchangeable.
