FTB Revelation is a kitchen-sink Minecraft 1.12.2 modpack: it combines technology, magic, exploration, combat and building without forcing you through one quest line. Install it through a supported launcher, use Java 8, and keep your client and server on the same Revelation release. For a private server, download the matching official FTB server installer, accept the EULA, start the generated launch script and allocate at least the pack’s documented 4 GB memory recommendation.
What FTB Revelation is
Feed The Beast describes Revelation as “a general all-purpose pack.” That description is more useful than calling it a single-theme pack: you can build factories, learn magic systems, explore dangerous dimensions, automate resources, or concentrate on construction and storage. The pack page says its design supports technology mods, magic mods, exploration and building, while also targeting performance and server stability.
Revelation is a Java Edition modpack for Minecraft 1.12.2. You need the licensed Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition for PC before a launcher can install or run it. The pack is not a replacement for the base game, and a modern Minecraft installation does not automatically make a 1.12.2 pack compatible.
CurseForge’s listing shows 3,034,690 total downloads in the 2026 page snapshot and identifies FTB Revelation-3.4.0.zip, dated December 8, 2020, as the latest release shown there. The official FTB server-files page is a separate release context: it lists server release 3.7.0 (ID 12180), plus 3.6.0, 3.5.0 beta, 3.4.0, 3.3.0 and 3.2.0. Always write down the exact release you intend to use rather than assuming that the newest client listing and newest server installer are the same build.

Requirements and compatibility
- Base game: Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition for PC must already be owned and installed.
- Modpack version: Revelation targets Minecraft 1.12.2. Select a client release that matches the server release exactly when playing multiplayer.
- Memory: The Revelation pack page recommends a minimum of 4 GB of RAM for clients and servers for best performance. This is a recommendation for the documented 1.12.2 releases, not a universal requirement for every current Minecraft version.
- Java: The pack documentation recommends the latest Java 8 release and states that Java 9 is not supported. Point both your launcher and server launch script at Java 8.
- Disk and backups: Leave room for the launcher’s downloaded libraries, the modpack instance and world saves. Back up the world before changing the pack release or removing mods.
If a launcher selects a different Java runtime automatically, change its per-instance Java setting rather than relying on the system default. A server can appear to start and still fail during mod loading when it is launched with an unsupported Java version.
Install Revelation with a launcher
The official getting-started guidance calls a modpack launcher the easiest installation route. The FTB App is the straightforward choice for a new installation; another supported launcher can work if it offers the same Revelation release and lets you select Java 8.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Verify the base game. Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition for PC and start the vanilla launcher once. This creates the normal game files and confirms that the account can launch Java Edition.
- Install the FTB App or another supported launcher. Use the launcher’s official installer for your operating system. Do not copy a random mod folder into the vanilla
.minecraftdirectory; a managed instance keeps Revelation’s mods, configuration and libraries isolated. - Find the pack. Search the launcher for “FTB Revelation” and check the Minecraft 1.12.2 label. Select the release that your friends or server operator will use. If the server is based on 3.7.0 while the launcher offers a different client build, stop and agree on one release before anyone joins.
- Install the instance. Choose an installation location with sufficient free space and the documented memory allocation. Let the launcher finish downloading every mod and library; interrupting the first initialization can leave an incomplete instance.
- Check Java and memory. In the instance settings, select the newest available Java 8 runtime and set memory to at least the pack’s 4 GB recommendation. Close other heavy applications if the operating system is short of available memory.
- Launch once before adding extras. Start Revelation from the launcher and wait for the first client initialization to complete. Reach the title screen, then exit cleanly. This confirms that the instance itself works before you add shaders, resource packs or optional performance tweaks.
The getting-started guide explicitly says, “Of course, you do not need to follow this guide to start playing.” It is optional hand-holding, not a mandatory quest chain. You can create a world immediately after the instance launches.

Older MultiMC-era instructions
An older wiki walkthrough documents MultiMC and the FTB Legacy list for Revelation 3.2.1, released October 29, 2019. Treat those directions as version-era guidance: menu names, import files and available Java detection can differ in current launchers. If you use that workflow, import the 3.2.1 instance rather than silently mixing its configuration with a newer client release, and still use Java 8.
What to do first in a new world
There is no single mandatory Revelation progression ladder. The safest opening is a short foundation phase followed by a deliberate choice of specialization.
- Secure a temporary base. Put down shelter before nightfall, light the area and create a bed. Keep the first base close enough to return to while you scout.
- Stabilize food. Gather reliable food and establish a repeatable source before spending long periods underground or in another dimension.
- Make basic tools and storage. Create starter tools, chests and a way to label or separate ores, mob drops, building blocks and machine components. Good storage prevents early resources from being lost when you change direction.
- Gather a broad ore reserve. Mine enough common stone, metals and fuel for tools, power components and the first machines or magical devices. Do not commit every rare item to a decorative build before you know which route you want.
- Choose a first track. Technology, magic, exploration/combat and building/quality-of-life can all lead to a strong base. Pick one primary goal and keep the others as support systems.
- Record dependencies. When a machine, ritual or dimension requires a particular resource, write the chain down or keep the relevant in-game documentation nearby. Revelation contains many independent mods with different terminology and progression loops.
Choosing a progression route
The best route depends on whether you value automation, discovery, combat or construction. The comparison below uses the practical criteria that matter on a solo world or shared server.

| Route | Early resource and infrastructure cost | Automation potential | Danger and exploration load | Learning curve | Value on a shared server |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Technology | Ores, fuel or another power source, machines and cables | High; processing and item movement can become repeatable systems | Usually lower at the beginning, although resources may require dangerous trips | Medium to high because each mod has its own machines and recipes | High; shared power, processing and automated supplies help every player |
| Magic | Mod-specific catalysts, resources and an early altar, ritual or equivalent setup | Varies by mod; some systems automate later than technology | Often includes unusual materials, rituals or locations that require preparation | High when several magical systems use different rules | Medium to high; a specialist can provide effects, materials or utility for the group |
| Exploration and combat | Improved equipment, food, travel supplies and a recovery plan | Low for the core route, though it benefits from automated gear and supplies | Highest; travel, dimensions, bosses and hostile areas are the central risks | Medium; the challenge is preparation and navigation rather than machine chains | High when one player scouts, maps and obtains materials for everyone |
| Building and quality of life | Building blocks, storage, transport and base utilities | Medium when paired with technology or storage systems | Low if the build stays near a secure base; higher when rare blocks require expeditions | Low to medium, but rises when you add complex transport or storage | High; organized storage, transport and shared facilities reduce friction for all players |
Technology: power, machines and automation
Start by identifying one useful processing chain rather than collecting every machine. A power source, ore processing and item storage form a practical first loop. Expand only after you know where inputs enter, where outputs go and how the system behaves when a chest fills. Label cables, tanks and inventories early; troubleshooting a compact, documented line is much easier than repairing an unmarked factory.
Technology has the deepest automation potential, so it is often the strongest first specialization for a group. A dedicated technician can supply processed materials, fuel or components while other players explore or build. Its trade-off is a substantial infrastructure and learning burden: different technology mods may use different power, item, fluid and machine conventions.
Magic: learn one system at a time
Choose one magical mod and follow its early resource loop, altar, ritual or equivalent starting structure before adding another. Keep that mod’s documentation available and record which ingredients are consumed, which are catalysts and which can be reused. This avoids the common Revelation mistake of collecting unrelated magical items without understanding any one system.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Magic can provide powerful utility and distinctive progression, but its learning curve is high because each mod explains concepts differently. On a server, a magic specialist can support the team with effects, materials or utility while the technology player handles bulk processing.
Exploration and combat: prepare before you travel
Upgrade equipment, secure food, carry building blocks and establish a recovery plan before entering a dangerous area or dimension. Improve travel infrastructure so a failed expedition does not require a long trek from the main base. Exploration is the riskiest route, but it can unlock materials and encounters that support every other specialization.
Building and quality of life: progress alongside another route
Storage, transport, decoration and base utilities are not a lesser progression path. A well-organized base makes every machine and ritual easier to use. Many builders pair this route with a technology track for item movement and storage, while explorers provide unusual blocks and resources. On a shared server, a central warehouse, labeled input areas and clear paths can save more time than an additional early machine.

Set up an FTB Revelation server for friends
Use the official Feed The Beast server-files page for the exact Revelation release you selected. The server page lists release 3.7.0 (ID 12180) as well as older builds, so choose deliberately instead of downloading whichever file appears first. Every player should install the identical pack release on the client.
Prepare the server folder
- Create a dedicated folder for the server world and keep it separate from your client instance and personal downloads.
- Download the platform installer for the chosen Revelation release from the official FTB server-files page. Put the installer in the folder that will hold the generated server files.
- Run the installer and wait for it to unpack the server libraries, mods and launch files. Do not move individual mods between releases.
- Open the generated EULA file, read the license terms and change the acceptance setting as instructed by the installer. The server will not start until the EULA is accepted.
- Start the generated server launch script for your operating system. The first run creates the world and configuration files; stop the server cleanly after generation so you can review them.
- Document the Java executable used by the launch script and confirm it is the latest Java 8 release available to you. If the script points to another Java installation, edit that path rather than changing files inside the modpack.
- Start the server again and watch the console until mod loading completes. Only then should players connect.
Windows and macOS installer commands
The official Windows server-files page provides a PowerShell Invoke-WebRequest command, and the macOS page provides a curl command. These commands download the installer for a specific release; use the command shown on the page for the release you selected rather than reusing a command from an older build. Because release URLs and filenames change, copying an older command can install the wrong server version.
Memory, versions and updates
Allocate at least the memory amount recommended on the Revelation pack page, and leave the operating system enough available memory to run the server, backups and administration tools. The server and clients must use the same Revelation release and Minecraft 1.12.2 build. A client that launches successfully can still be rejected by the server when even one release differs.
Before upgrading, stop the server, copy the entire world folder and record the old release, Java path and configuration changes. Test the new release on a separate copy first. Never treat a generated upgrade as reversible without a backup.
Make the server usable for friends
- Give the server folder a clear name that includes the Revelation release.
- Share the exact client release and Java requirement with every player.
- Keep a written list of configuration edits, permissions and any added files so a replacement administrator can reproduce the setup.
- Schedule world backups and verify that at least one backup can be restored to a test copy.
- Use your operating system and router’s normal firewall and network controls to permit only the access your group needs. Do not publish an unprotected server address or administrative credentials.
Troubleshooting common failures
The launcher cannot find or start Revelation
- Confirm that the base Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition for PC is owned by the signed-in account.
- Check that the selected instance is Revelation for Minecraft 1.12.2, not a similarly named pack for another Minecraft version.
- Set the instance to Java 8 and retry after the first download has fully completed.
- Remove partially downloaded instance files only through the launcher’s repair or reinstall option, then let initialization finish without interruption.
The server stops during startup
- Read the first error in the console, not only the final shutdown line.
- Verify that the installer and client release are the same and that no individual mod was added or removed.
- Check the Java path in the launch script; Java 9 is unsupported for Revelation.
- Confirm that the EULA setting was accepted and that the server folder is writable.
- Restore the last known-good world backup before testing a release change.
Players receive a mod or version mismatch
Have the player compare the complete Revelation release number with the server’s release, then launch the instance again after selecting the matching profile. Do not solve a mismatch by copying only the server’s mods folder into a client; reinstall or switch to the correct managed instance so configuration files and libraries match as well.

Quick Recap
Performance is poor despite a successful launch
- Check that the instance or server receives at least the pack’s documented memory recommendation and that the operating system is not swapping.
- Close competing applications during testing and wait for initial world generation to settle.
- Reduce simultaneous exploration by several players while the server generates new terrain.
- Inspect large automated systems for overflowing inventories, unnecessary item transport and machines running without a useful output.
- Keep backups before changing performance-related configuration, then test one change at a time.
A practical first-session plan
- Install one managed Revelation 1.12.2 instance with Java 8 and confirm it reaches the title screen.
- Create a world, establish shelter, food, storage and a basic ore reserve.
- Agree with your group on one client/server release before anyone invests in a long-term base.
- Choose a primary route: technology for automation, magic for a focused ritual system, exploration for materials and encounters, or building for infrastructure and design.
- Set up the official server separately, accept the EULA, verify the launch script’s Java path and make a backup before inviting friends.
- Expand one understandable system at a time, documenting dependencies so the open-ended pack remains flexible instead of overwhelming.
