Short answer: Craft a redstone repeater with one redstone dust, two redstone torches and three stone blocks. Place it with the input at the rear and the arrow pointing toward the next component. A repeater renews any incoming signal of strength 1 or higher to strength 15, allows four delay settings, and passes power only forward.
What a redstone repeater does
A redstone repeater is a directional timing and signal-renewal block. It accepts a redstone signal at its rear, waits for the selected delay, and sends a full-strength signal from its front. Microsoft’s Guide to Redstone summarizes its basic purpose as: “Repeater: Place along a line of redstone dust to continue the signal.”
The important behaviors are:
- An input signal of strength 1 or greater is regenerated to output strength 15.
- Power travels from the back of the repeater to the front; it does not pass in reverse.
- The repeater powers the dust or component directly in front of it, so the output face must touch the next part of the circuit.
- You can select one of four delay settings, from the shortest setting to the longest setting.
- Several repeaters can be placed in series when one repeater cannot provide enough delay.
These properties solve two common redstone problems at once: a dust line that has become too weak to activate a device, and a circuit that needs a controlled pause between an input and an output.
How to craft a redstone repeater
Ingredients
| Ingredient | Quantity | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Redstone torch | 2 | Left and right cells of the middle row |
| Redstone dust | 1 | Center cell of the middle row |
| Stone block | 3 | All three cells of the bottom row |
The recipe is the same shape in the normal 3×3 crafting grid. The result is a redstone repeater.

Crafting-grid arrangement
- Open a crafting table so the 3×3 grid is available.
- Put one redstone torch in the middle-left cell.
- Put the redstone dust in the center cell.
- Put the second redstone torch in the middle-right cell.
- Fill the entire bottom row with three stone blocks.
- Move the repeater from the output slot into your inventory.
Do not substitute a redstone dust line for the dust in the recipe: the line you are extending is built separately after the repeater is crafted. Likewise, the recipe calls for stone blocks. If the recipe does not appear, check that you are using stone rather than a different block with a similar texture.
How to place and orient the repeater
A repeater has a clear input side and output side. Its arrow-like markings and raised torch point toward the output. The back must face the signal source, and the front must face the next dust segment or redstone component.
- Stand where you want the repeater to go and select it in your hotbar.
- Place it so the front points away from the source and toward the destination.
- Connect the source to the rear with redstone dust or another valid redstone component.
- Put the next dust segment, lamp, piston, door, note block or other target directly in front of the repeater.
- Activate the source and watch the repeater’s front side and the destination for power.
Rotation is not cosmetic. A repeater facing the wrong way receives no useful input, and a correctly powered repeater that is not touching the next component cannot transfer power to that component. When a circuit appears dead, orientation and the block immediately in front are the first two checks.
Changing the repeater delay
Use the repeater’s interact or use control to cycle through its four delay positions. Each interaction advances to the next setting; after the longest setting, another interaction returns to the shortest setting. The exact button depends on your platform, but it is the same control used to interact with other placeable blocks.

| Setting | Relative delay | Reference timing | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shortest | About 0.1 seconds (2 game ticks in the reference timing table) | Fast signal handoff |
| 2 | Short | About 0.2 seconds (4 game ticks) | Small spacing between actions |
| 3 | Long | About 0.3 seconds (6 game ticks) | Visible sequencing of mechanisms |
| 4 | Longest | About 0.4 seconds (8 game ticks) | Maximum delay from one repeater |
Microsoft describes the built-in control as a 1-to-4-tick delay. Other Minecraft references express those four states as 2, 4, 6 and 8 game ticks, or approximately 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 seconds. These labels describe the same four selectable positions using different tick terminology. Write down the edition and version when documenting a circuit, because Java Edition and Bedrock Edition documentation can expose state names differently and interface details can change between releases.
Setting a repeater to four ticks
- Place and orient the repeater in the circuit.
- Interact with it until the slider or torch indicator is at the fourth and farthest position.
- Trigger the input and confirm that the output starts after the longest single-repeater delay.
If you overshoot the setting, continue interacting until the control cycles back around. There is no separate menu or inventory recipe for delay; the setting is changed on the placed block.
How long delays are built with multiple repeaters
One repeater provides only one selected interval. For a longer pause, place repeaters in a line, with each repeater’s front touching the next repeater’s rear. The delays accumulate in sequence.
| Example chain | Approximate total using the reference timings | What it demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| 1 repeater at setting 1 | 0.1 seconds | Shortest single-stage delay |
| 2 repeaters at setting 4 | 0.8 seconds | Two longest stages added together |
| 5 repeaters at setting 2 | About 1.0 second | Several short stages can create a longer interval |
| 10 repeaters at setting 3 | About 3.0 seconds | Long sequencing delay built from repeated units |
The figures in this table are arithmetic from the documented 0.1-to-0.4-second reference values, not independent measurements. In a live world, account for the timing conventions of your edition and version when precision matters.

Building a repeater chain
- Lay the input dust line to the first repeater.
- Set the first repeater to the desired delay.
- Place the second repeater directly in front of the first, facing the same direction.
- Repeat until the total delay is long enough.
- Place the final dust segment or component directly in front of the last repeater.
- Test the chain with the real input pulse rather than relying only on the repeater indicators.
A chain also renews the signal at each stage. This makes it useful when a long run would otherwise arrive too weak to activate the destination. Use as many stages as the timing and space of the build require, but remember that every stage adds its own delay.
Pulse stretching: using delay to lengthen a short signal
A repeater can keep an output active longer than a short incoming on-pulse. For example, Microsoft gives the case of a one-tick pulse entering a repeater set to four ticks: the repeater can produce a four-tick output. This is useful when a button, sensor or brief logic event does not hold a lamp, piston or door active long enough for the mechanism you are driving.
Pulse-stretching procedure
- Connect the pulse source to the repeater’s rear.
- Set the repeater to the required delay, up to the fourth setting.
- Connect the output directly to the target or to the next stage of the circuit.
- Trigger the source and observe both the start and end of the output.
- If the target still receives too short a signal, add another repeater stage or redesign the pulse circuit rather than assuming the first repeater is malfunctioning.
The selected delay controls the repeater’s response; it is not a guarantee that every surrounding circuit will remain powered for the same practical time. Devices, dust paths and additional stages can change what you observe.
Practical redstone repeater uses
Renewing a long redstone line
Redstone dust loses signal strength along a run. Put a repeater at the end of the run to restore the incoming strength to 15 before the next section. This lets a circuit cross a larger distance in multiple renewed sections instead of relying on one uninterrupted line.

Place the repeater where the preceding dust line reaches it, then continue the new dust line from the repeater’s front. If the next section does not light, inspect the exact block in front of the repeater; the output is intentionally limited to that directly adjacent component.

Because power enters the rear and leaves the front, a repeater prevents the signal from travelling backward through that point. This is helpful when two parts of a build are close together and you want an unambiguous direction of flow. Orient every repeater in the chain consistently and label the source and destination while debugging.
Timing doors, lamps and pistons
Select a short setting when the mechanism should respond almost immediately, or a longer setting when players need to see one action before the next begins. A chain gives more delay than one block can provide. For a door sequence, for example, put one repeater between the first trigger and the first door, then another stage before a second door if the openings must be separated.
Sequencing note blocks and other events
Repeaters let you stagger separate outputs. Each branch can receive a different number of stages or a different setting, producing a controlled order rather than simultaneous activation. Test each branch independently before combining them, because an orientation error in one branch can look like a timing problem in the whole sequence.

Building clocks and repeated circuits
Repeater delays are building blocks for clocks and other circuits that need a predictable interval between state changes. The exact clock arrangement determines the period, so document both the number of repeaters and each selected setting. A clock that works in one edition or version may not behave identically after a mechanics update; avoid assuming that a tutorial’s timing labels transfer unchanged.
Troubleshooting a repeater that does not power the next block
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The repeater never lights | No signal reaches the rear, or it is facing the source. | Trace the line backward and rotate the repeater so its rear receives the input. |
| The repeater lights but the next dust does not | The output face is not touching the next dust segment. | Place the dust or component directly in front of the repeater. |
| The circuit works only from one direction | The repeater is directional by design. | Orient every stage from source to destination; do not expect reverse flow. |
| The target activates too late | The repeater is set to a longer position, or several stages are chained. | Interact with the repeater to select a shorter setting or remove an unnecessary stage. |
| A short pulse is missed by the mechanism | The target needs a longer active signal. | Use a longer repeater setting to stretch the pulse, then retest the complete circuit. |
| A long line stops partway through | The signal has not been renewed before the destination. | Add a correctly oriented repeater at the end of the weak dust run. |
| A tutorial’s “instant” design no longer works | The construction depends on a bug or version-sensitive behavior. | Check the tutorial’s edition and version, and replace it with ordinary repeater timing when stability matters. |
A reliable diagnostic order
- Confirm that the input source is actually active.
- Check the repeater’s rear and front orientation.
- Check the block immediately in front of the repeater.
- Remove extra stages temporarily and test one repeater at a time.
- Cycle through the four delay positions and observe whether the target responds.
- Reconnect the full chain only after each section works independently.
Java Edition, Bedrock Edition and version notes
The core concept is shared: a repeater is directional, restores an input of strength 1 or higher to strength 15, offers four selectable delays and powers the component directly ahead. Exact terminology can differ. Microsoft documentation describes a 1-to-4-tick setting, while timing references often list the four positions as 2, 4, 6 and 8 game ticks, equivalent to approximately 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 seconds.
When publishing a build plan or following a tutorial, record:
- Whether the world is Java Edition or Bedrock Edition.
- The Minecraft version used by the instructions.
- Whether “tick” means the repeater’s displayed delay position or a game-tick count.
- Whether the design depends on ordinary vanilla behavior or an update-sensitive quirk.
This qualification is especially important for so-called instant repeaters. Tutorials for zero-delay lines, zero-tick doors or synchronized flying machines may rely on bugs or mechanics that have been changed, fixed or restricted by a server. Treat those designs as version-specific experiments, not as a permanent replacement for normal repeaters.
Quick Recap
Choosing the right repeater arrangement
| Need | Recommended arrangement | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Restore a weak signal | One repeater at the end of the dust run | Input reaches the rear and the next component touches the front |
| Prevent reverse flow | One correctly oriented repeater | All downstream stages point in the same direction |
| Add a small pause | One repeater at setting 1 or 2 | Edition-specific timing terminology |
| Create a longer pause | Several repeaters in series | Total delay equals the sum of the selected stages |
| Hold a brief pulse longer | One repeater at a longer setting, or a chain | The output duration matches the target mechanism |
| Use an instant or zero-tick design | Only when the exact version allows it | Whether the server permits the bug-dependent mechanic |
Redstone repeater build checklist
- Have one redstone dust, two redstone torches and three stone blocks for each repeater.
- Place the torches on the left and right of the middle row, dust in the middle, and stone across the bottom row.
- Point the repeater’s rear toward the source and its front toward the destination.
- Keep the next dust segment or component directly in front of the output.
- Choose one of the four settings with the interact control.
- For more delay, chain repeaters and add their selected intervals.
- Use a longer setting when a short incoming pulse must be stretched.
- Document Java or Bedrock Edition and the Minecraft version for precise timing work.
- Do not treat instant-repeater tutorials as stable vanilla behavior without checking their version and server rules.
