In Minecraft 1.21 and later, a raid no longer starts the moment you enter a village with Bad Omen. Drink an Ominous Bottle away from the village, enter a valid village, and Bad Omen becomes Raid Omen. A 30-second countdown then gives you time to cancel with milk or prepare; when it expires, the raid begins where you gained Raid Omen.
To win, protect the villagers, kill every raider in each wave, and search the surrounding terrain if the raid bar remains after the visible enemies are gone. A player who kills at least one raid mob receives Hero of the Village, and Java Edition also records the associated advancement and awards 100 experience.

What changed about raids in Minecraft 1.21
The important 1.21 change is the separation between gaining an omen and actually starting a raid. Mojang’s 1.21 release notes state that “Bad Omen no longer triggers a Raid directly when entering a Village.” Instead, entering a village while Bad Omen is active converts the effect into Raid Omen. The raid starts only after Raid Omen expires.
This change creates a deliberate preparation window. You can arrive with supplies, decide whether the village is defensible, or drink milk to remove the omen before the event begins. The raid location is the location where you gained Raid Omen, so walking through a village can place the battlefield somewhere less convenient than the village center.

What you need before starting
- An Ominous Bottle: In current 1.21 mechanics, this is the intended way to obtain Bad Omen for a raid.
- A valid village: The village must have at least one villager and a claimed bed or another recognized village point of interest.
- Combat equipment: Bring your strongest practical armor, a shield, a bow or crossbow, and a melee weapon.
- Sustaining supplies: Carry enough food for several engagements and spare blocks for walls, bridges, and emergency cover.
- Optional control tools: A water bucket can help control movement and create space, provided you use it without making the terrain harder to navigate.
A village that merely contains buildings is not automatically a raid village. If there is no villager or no claimed bed or recognized point of interest, entering it will not create the village state required for Raid Omen to convert into a raid.
How to start a raid step by step
- Obtain an Ominous Bottle. Do not drink it inside the village unless you are ready to use the countdown immediately.
- Prepare away from the village. Equip armor, weapons, food, blocks, and any movement-control item you intend to use. This prevents the 30-second window from being wasted on inventory management.
- Drink the Ominous Bottle. Drinking it gives you Bad Omen under the current 1.21 system.
- Enter the village area. The area must contain at least one villager and a claimed bed or another recognized village point of interest.
- Confirm the conversion. Bad Omen changes to Raid Omen when you enter the valid village.
- Use the countdown. Raid Omen lasts 30 seconds. During this period, you can fortify the village or drink milk to clear the effect and cancel the pending raid.
- Let Raid Omen expire. Once it expires, the raid starts at the location where you gained Raid Omen and the raid boss bar appears.
If you do not want the raid after all, drink milk before the Raid Omen countdown finishes. The cancellation has to happen during that pre-raid period; once the raid has begun, the event must be dealt with as an active raid rather than canceled by removing the original omen.

How to prepare the village during the countdown
Protect the villagers first
Villagers are the reason the raid matters and the easiest way for the encounter to become chaotic. Close or block entrances, keep villagers inside houses or behind walls, and avoid leaving open paths that let raiders reach them while you are fighting elsewhere. A compact, well-lit area is easier to patrol than a spread-out settlement.
Choose a defensible position
Stand where you can see several approaches and retreat without running into buildings, cliffs, or water that you did not intend to use. Height and solid cover make ranged attacks safer, but do not build so high or so far from the village that you lose track of villagers and raiders. The raid begins at the position where you gained Raid Omen, so use the countdown to make that position useful.
Remove hiding places
Clear nearby caves, deep dips, dense obstructions, and awkward corners where raiders can become difficult to see or reach. Terrain that is harmless during normal play can make the raid bar appear to stall because a surviving raider is below ground or behind a structure.
Check your combat kit
- Ranged weapon: A bow or crossbow lets you thin groups and attack pillagers before they reach the village.
- Shield: Keep it ready when closing distance or crossing an open area under fire.
- Melee weapon: Use it when a raider reaches you or when terrain makes ranged attacks unsafe.
- Armor: Wear the strongest practical set you have rather than starting a raid in equipment meant only for travel.
- Food: Keep food on the hotbar or in an immediately reachable slot so recovery does not require opening your inventory.
- Blocks: Carry enough to seal doorways, create cover, and reach a raider trapped in a depression.
How many waves are in a raid?
The standard wave count is determined by difficulty, with an additional Java Edition rule for higher omen levels.

| Difficulty | Standard waves | Edition qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | 3 | Standard count in both editions; Bedrock follows the difficulty-based model. |
| Normal | 5 | Standard count in both editions; Java can add a wave at omen levels above I. |
| Hard | 7 | Standard count in both editions; Java can add a wave at omen levels above I. |
On Java Edition, omen levels above I can add a further wave and improve the chance that raiders have enchanted equipment. Bedrock Edition uses difficulty-based wave counts rather than Java’s same additional-wave rule. Consequently, two raids started with the same apparent difficulty can have different lengths if they are played on different editions or if Java uses a higher omen level.
Which mobs appear in raids?
Pillagers
Pillagers are ranged attackers. Their crossbows make open ground dangerous, especially when several are firing at once. Use blocks and terrain for cover, return fire from a distance, and avoid standing in a place where you can be hit from multiple directions.
Vindicators
Vindicators are close-range threats. Their danger increases when they reach you together, so do not allow a group to surround you. Back through a doorway or around a solid corner, separate them, and fight one or a small number at a time.
Ravagers
Ravagers are large, mounted raid threats that can break up a defensive position and force you out of cover. Keep distance when possible, use a clear retreat route, and do not let one pin you against a wall while other raiders approach.

Evokers and the vexes they summon are associated with Normal and Hard raids. They add a threat that cannot be handled simply by hiding behind a single doorway, so maintain awareness above and around your position while dealing with the main group.
Witches
Witches also appear in Normal and Hard encounters. Their presence makes prolonged exposure costly, so prioritize a safe line of attack and avoid letting a witch remain unnoticed behind the main group.

Pillagers, vindicators, and ravagers form the core raid enemies across difficulties. Exact combinations and mounted-ravager behavior differ between Java and Bedrock, so do not assume that a strategy based on one edition’s lineup will reproduce the same encounter on the other.
How to fight each wave safely
1. Start at range
Use a bow or crossbow to reduce the group before it reaches the village. Grouped pillagers are a good first target because their ranged pressure can continue while you are dealing with melee attackers. Fire from cover, then reposition rather than standing still while the remaining raiders converge.
2. Keep an escape route open
Do not fight with your back against an unplanned dead end. Leave a path toward your defensive position, a wall, or a prepared fallback point. If several vindicators close at once, retreat instead of attempting to trade hits in the open.
3. Separate melee attackers
Use doorways, corners, fences, and blocks to stop several vindicators from reaching you simultaneously. Once the immediate melee threat is separated, switch back to ranged attacks where the terrain permits.
4. Deal with ravagers without getting trapped
Ravagers can make a safe-looking position unsafe by forcing movement. Keep enough distance to see their approach and avoid retreating into a cave, narrow alley, or wall. If you use water or blocks to control movement, leave yourself a route to continue searching after the large threat is gone.
5. Watch for the less visible threats
When evokers, vexes, or witches are present, scan above roofs, behind walls, and around the edge of the fight rather than focusing only on the largest mob. Their attacks can continue while you are occupied with pillagers and vindicators.

6. Recover before the next engagement
After a group is defeated, eat, repair your positioning, and confirm that villagers remain protected. A raid is a sequence of engagements, not one continuous brawl; using the space between groups prevents a minor injury from becoming a death during the next wave.
What to do when the raid bar remains but no raider is visible
A remaining raid bar means at least one raider is still alive, even if the village appears quiet. Do not assume the event has frozen or that the last enemy despawned. Search methodically:
- Walk the full village perimeter, checking behind houses, walls, farms, and terrain folds.
- Inspect nearby caves, ravines, holes, and underground spaces you identified during preparation.
- Listen and look from several heights; a raider may be below your position or separated from the main battlefield.
- Use blocks to reach depressions or seal routes temporarily so the search area becomes smaller.
- Return to the village center after each sweep and check whether the bar changes before beginning another outward sweep.
Searching the perimeter is especially important when the village borders uneven or obstructed terrain. Clearing those areas before the raid is faster than trying to locate a hidden raider while villagers are still exposed.

| Starting workflow | Obtain Bad Omen from an Ominous Bottle, enter a valid village, receive Raid Omen, wait through the 30-second countdown, then fight. | The same omen acquisition, village entry, countdown, wave combat, and victory workflow applies. |
| Wave count | Difficulty supplies the standard count; omen levels above I can add a further wave. | Wave count is tied to difficulty rather than Java’s additional-wave behavior. |
| Raid composition | Core enemies are pillagers, vindicators, and ravagers; Normal and Hard can include evokers, vexes, and witches. | The same broad enemy categories apply, but exact composition differs in some encounters. |
| Mounted ravagers | Behavior and combinations can differ from Bedrock. | Mounted-ravager composition differs from Java. |
| Victory presentation | A player who killed at least one raid mob receives Hero of the Village; Java also records the related advancement and grants 100 experience. | Hero of the Village applies to qualifying players; the exact advancement and experience presentation is not stated in the cited Bedrock comparison material. |
The shared procedure is more important than the differences: prepare first, gain Raid Omen in the village, use the countdown, protect the villagers, defeat every wave, and search for hidden survivors. Use the edition-specific rules when estimating how long the fight may last or what combination of raiders to expect.
How the raid ends and what you receive
Victory condition
The raid ends in victory only after every raider has been killed. The disappearance of the visible group is not enough if the raid bar still indicates a surviving enemy.
Hero of the Village
Players who killed at least one raid mob receive the Hero of the Village effect after victory. Merely being nearby is not the stated qualification; participation requires killing at least one raid mob.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Entering an invalid village
If Bad Omen does not become Raid Omen, check the village requirements rather than repeatedly crossing the same buildings. Confirm that at least one villager is present and that a bed is claimed or another recognized village point of interest exists.
Drinking the bottle too early
Bad Omen is most manageable when you have already selected a village and prepared the battlefield. If you drink the Ominous Bottle while traveling, avoid entering a village until you are ready; entering one starts the 30-second Raid Omen countdown.
Forgetting the cancellation window
Once Raid Omen appears, you have a short decision period. Drink milk during the 30 seconds if you changed your mind. Waiting until the raid has started means you must fight it.
Fighting in the open
Open ground exposes you to pillagers and lets vindicators approach from several directions. Fall back to cover, use blocks to control the approach, and keep a route out of the position.
Chasing one raider too far
A hidden or fleeing raider can draw you away from the village and the villagers you are protecting. Search in controlled sweeps and return to the defensive area frequently instead of abandoning it for an extended chase.
Assuming the raid is over because the village looks calm
Use the raid bar as the authoritative signal. If it remains, continue the perimeter-and-cave search until you locate and kill the survivor.
A practical raid checklist
- Ominous Bottle obtained.
- Armor, shield, ranged weapon, melee weapon, food, and spare blocks equipped.
- Village confirmed to have a villager and a claimed bed or recognized point of interest.
- Villagers enclosed or otherwise protected.
- Nearby caves, holes, and obstructed terrain inspected.
- Fallback position and escape route identified.
- Milk available if you may need to cancel during the countdown.
- Raid Omen location chosen deliberately.
- Ranged attacks ready for pillagers and a plan for separating vindicators.
- Perimeter search prepared for any wave whose bar remains after the visible enemies are gone.
Following this order turns the 1.21 raid system into a predictable sequence: acquire the omen, validate the village, use the countdown, fight from cover, locate every survivor, and finish the final raider.
