In Minecraft, pufferfish are most useful as a brewing ingredient, not as food. You can obtain one by fishing, finding a live fish in a warm or lukewarm ocean, or pursuing the rare drop associated with guardians and elder guardians. A live pufferfish inflates when a player gets close and can poison you. Use a water bucket to capture it safely as a bucket of pufferfish. If you eat the fish item, the Bedrock definition applies severe negative effects: Poison for 60 seconds, Nausea for 15 seconds, and Hunger for 15 seconds.

Where to find a pufferfish
Search warm and lukewarm oceans
The most direct exploration method is to look for a live pufferfish in warm or lukewarm ocean biomes. These are the habitat categories identified by the Bedrock Update Aquatic guidance. Because the fish reacts to nearby players, avoid swimming directly into every fish you see. Bring a water bucket before approaching so that you can collect the fish instead of trying to carry it by hand.
Ocean-biome names and generation details can vary by edition and game version, so use the biome label shown by your edition’s tools rather than assuming that every ocean has the same wildlife. The documented habitat statement establishes warm and lukewarm oceans as the places to search; it does not establish a universal population density or a guaranteed number of fish per biome.

Fish with a rod
Fishing is the safest acquisition route when you do not want to dive into an unfamiliar ocean. Cast a fishing rod and continue fishing until a pufferfish appears as a catch. This approach avoids direct contact with a live fish, but it is time-based: the rod does not guarantee a pufferfish on any particular cast. The available evidence does not establish one drop or catch percentage that applies to every edition, version, enchantment setup, or fishing location, so do not plan around a claimed universal rate.
Fishing is particularly practical when you already have a secure base, a rod, and time to wait. Keep the caught item in your inventory and reserve it for brewing or trading rather than eating it.

Pursue guardian or elder-guardian drops
Mojang lists a rare guardian or elder-guardian drop as a third route. This option combines underwater combat with the danger of handling a pufferfish afterward, so it is usually a specialist choice rather than a first attempt. The documented fact is that the drop can occur; no single drop-rate figure is established for all editions and versions. Treat it as a bonus from guardian activity, not as a dependable farming guarantee.

There is no documented winner for every situation. Fishing minimizes contact risk, ocean searching is the direct way to obtain a live fish, and guardian combat makes sense only when its other rewards already justify the danger.
What a live pufferfish does
It inflates as a defense response
A live pufferfish changes state when a player comes near. Mojang describes inflation as a defensive response. The visual change is a warning that you have entered the fish’s danger range, not an invitation to touch it. If you continue moving closer, the fish can inflict Poison.
Inflation is therefore useful information: stop, back away, and reposition before attempting collection. Do not swim around the fish in tight circles, because repeated close passes create more opportunities for contact. Approach with a clear escape path and your bucket selected.

Poison exposure is avoidable
The simplest prevention is distance. Observe the fish from outside its reaction range, place yourself so that a bucket use will reach it, and collect it in one deliberate action. If you are exploring with low health, no food, or limited defensive equipment, postpone the attempt. A pufferfish is small, but the danger comes from the status effect triggered by careless proximity.
How to capture and transport a live pufferfish
A live pufferfish is not the same thing as the ordinary pufferfish item. The safe transport method is to use a water bucket on the fish, which converts it into a bucket of pufferfish.
- Prepare before approaching. Put a water bucket in an accessible hotbar slot. Make sure you have room in your inventory for the resulting bucket.
- Identify the fish. Confirm that you are targeting a live pufferfish in the water, not an item floating on the ground.
- Approach carefully. Move close enough for the bucket interaction while watching for inflation. Do not deliberately collide with the fish.
- Use the bucket on the fish. A successful interaction produces a bucket of pufferfish and removes the live fish from its original position.
- Leave the area safely. Swim away before reorganizing your inventory or attempting another capture.
- Place it later if needed. The bucket is the transport container for the live fish. Emptying it into a suitable water space releases the pufferfish.
This method is the correct answer to “Can I pick up a pufferfish with a bucket?” Yes: a water bucket captures the live fish as a bucket of pufferfish. The bucket is not a general-purpose way to scoop up an already dropped pufferfish item; the interaction is performed on the live aquatic creature.
Transport and base-building precautions
- Use a contained pool or aquarium rather than releasing the fish beside a walkway.
- Leave enough room for players to walk around the enclosure without brushing against the fish.
- Keep the bucketed fish in a chest or other secure storage until the enclosure is ready.
- Label the container clearly so nobody mistakes the item for ordinary food.
- When building a public area, place barriers or glass between the fish and visitors.
What happens if you eat pufferfish?
Eating the pufferfish item is a trap. The official Bedrock stable item definition lists nutrition value 1 and poor saturation, while also assigning three negative effects. The values below are specific to that Bedrock definition and should not be generalized into an edition-independent claim without checking the relevant version.

If you ate one accidentally
- Stop risky movement. Do not continue exploring, climbing, swimming in deep water, or fighting while Nausea is active.
- Move to safety. Reach a lit, enclosed location or another area where you can wait without falling or drowning.
- Watch the Poison timer. The Bedrock definition specifies 60 seconds of Poison; avoid assuming that a small amount of ordinary food immediately cancels it.
- Protect your remaining health. Keep away from hostile mobs and environmental hazards until the effects expire or you use an appropriate cure available in your edition.
Do not treat pufferfish as emergency food. Its low nutrition and poor saturation make the trade especially unfavorable even before the status effects are considered.

Brewing a Potion of Water Breathing
The primary practical reason to keep pufferfish is brewing a Potion of Water Breathing. The fish is an ingredient for that potion, allowing underwater work without relying solely on a short air supply. The exact interface and available potion variants can differ by edition, but the standard brewing sequence is consistent in principle.
Gather the brewing equipment
- A brewing stand.
- Brewing fuel for the stand.
- Water bottles.
- Nether wart to create the base awkward potion.
- A pufferfish item for the Water Breathing step.
Use the brewing stand
- Load fuel. Put the brewing stand’s fuel in its fuel slot so it can process ingredients.
- Fill bottles with water. Place water bottles in the bottle slots.
- Create the base potion. Brew nether wart with the water bottles to produce awkward potions.
- Add the pufferfish. Place the pufferfish in the ingredient slot and brew the awkward potions into Water Breathing potions.
- Collect and label the result. Move the finished potions to storage before returning to exploration.
Do not put a bucket of pufferfish into the brewing ingredient slot expecting the same result. The bucket is the live-fish transport form; brewing uses the pufferfish item. Empty or release a fish only when you need a live entity, and keep the item form for potion production.
Plan potion use around the job
Water Breathing potions are most valuable when you have a defined underwater objective, such as searching an ocean structure, collecting blocks, or operating near a guardian area. Prepare more than one bottle for a long expedition and carry a safe route back to land. The pufferfish itself does not grant water breathing when eaten; its useful role is as the brewing ingredient.
Trading with fisherman villagers
Mojang also identifies fisherman-villager trading as a pufferfish use. Trading can turn an otherwise unwanted fish into part of a villager-economy plan, but the available documentation here does not specify a universal trade price, villager level, or edition-independent offer. Check the trade shown by the fisherman in your world rather than assuming that every fisherman presents the same deal.
Keep trading separate from brewing decisions: a pufferfish reserved for a Water Breathing potion should not be offered accidentally, and a trade opportunity should not tempt you to eat the item.

Java Edition history
Mojang dates the introduction of pufferfish in Java Edition to version 1.7.2. That historical note identifies when the creature entered Java Edition; it does not by itself describe every current spawn, fishing, or effect rule.

The warm- and lukewarm-ocean habitat and bucket-capture details cited in the Update Aquatic guide are Bedrock documentation. The quantified food effects in this guide come from Microsoft’s Bedrock stable item definition accessed on October 15, 2026. If you are playing Java Edition, or an older or newer version, verify the in-game behavior before relying on a specific duration, amplifier, or acquisition rule.
No single spawn percentage, fishing percentage, or guardian-drop percentage should be applied across all editions. Those values depend on the edition and version, and a universal figure is not established by the documented material used here.
Common mistakes and fixes
“The fish inflated before I could capture it.”
Inflation means you entered its defensive range. Back away, reset your position, and try again with the bucket ready. Do not chase it through a confined space.

“I have a pufferfish item, but the bucket interaction does nothing.”
The bucket captures a live pufferfish entity, not a dropped item. Use the item for brewing or trading, or find a live fish in the water for capture.
“I cannot find one in my ocean.”
Confirm that the area is a warm or lukewarm ocean under the habitat guidance, then consider fishing with a rod. Ocean searching is not guaranteed to produce a fish at a particular location.
“I need one immediately for a potion.”
Fishing may be safer but takes time; guardian hunting adds combat risk; ocean searching can be fastest when a live fish is visible. Choose according to your equipment and objective instead of relying on an unsupported universal fastest method.
“I ate it and my screen looks distorted.”
That is consistent with the listed Nausea effect. Move to safety, avoid combat and hazardous movement, and wait out the status effects while monitoring your health.
