Prismarine comes mainly from ocean monuments. You can mine the monument itself for prismarine, prismarine bricks, dark prismarine, and sea lanterns, or craft the three prismarine block types from prismarine shards. Guardians and elder guardians supply shards and sometimes prismarine crystals, giving you a renewable source once you have secured a monument.

This guide explains every core recipe, the safest way to reach a monument, how conduits and guardian drops fit into your plans, and which acquisition method makes sense for a small project versus a large build.

What prismarine is in Minecraft

Prismarine is a blue-green family of blocks associated with ocean monuments. Monuments generate in deep ocean biomes and are built largely from prismarine, its patterned variants, and sea lanterns. The blocks work as ordinary building materials, so you can break them with a pickaxe, collect them, and use them in underwater or land-based structures.

The family has three principal decorative blocks:

  • Prismarine: a blue-green block with a subtle, shifting-looking texture.
  • Prismarine bricks: a more regular, patterned version suited to walls, floors, and repeating geometric designs.
  • Dark prismarine: the darkest variant, useful for trim, contrast bands, roofs, and deep-water palettes.

Prismarine is also a component in underwater technology. Prismarine shards and prismarine crystals contribute to sea-lantern production, while prismarine and sea-lantern blocks activate a conduit frame. In practical terms, a monument is both a building-material deposit and the starting point for a renewable underwater resource operation.

Minecraft writer Marsh Davies described prismarine as “an attractive building material in itself” in the January 20, 2017, Block of the Week: Prismarine feature. That remains a useful summary: you do not have to reserve it for a conduit or a monument replica; the blocks are valuable as a visual palette on their own.

Prismarine recipes

You can craft the three main block variants from prismarine shards. The ingredient requirements are fixed, so collect shards before opening a crafting table if you are planning a large build.

Item Ingredients Best use
Prismarine 4 prismarine shards General walls, floors, and foundations
Prismarine bricks 9 prismarine shards Patterned surfaces and formal architecture
Dark prismarine 8 prismarine shards and 1 ink sac Dark accents, borders, roofs, and contrast

How to craft the blocks

  1. Open a crafting table or another crafting interface that provides the required grid.
  2. Place the listed ingredients in the recipe arrangement shown by your recipe book, or enter the arrangement manually.
  3. Move the crafted block into your inventory and repeat until you have the amount needed for the project.

Prismarine bricks consume the most shards per crafted block, while dark prismarine also requires an ink sac. If your supply is limited, use ordinary prismarine for bulk structure and reserve bricks or dark prismarine for visible sections.

Sea lantern materials

Prismarine shards and prismarine crystals are used in sea-lantern production. Sea lanterns are bright light sources with an underwater-themed appearance, and they naturally occur in ocean monuments. If you need a lit underwater build, collect existing lanterns while clearing a monument or plan a separate supply of the prismarine resources used to craft them.

Where to find prismarine

Ocean monuments: the main source

Ocean monuments are the most dependable place to obtain large quantities. They generate in deep ocean biomes and contain prismarine, prismarine bricks, dark prismarine, and sea lanterns. Mining a monument gives you finished blocks immediately, so this is usually the fastest approach when you need a finite amount for a build.

The same location is dangerous. Guardians defend monuments, and elder guardians can apply Mining Fatigue. Mining Fatigue makes breaking blocks dramatically slower, turning an apparently quick excavation into a long exposure to hostile mobs if you enter without a plan.

Ocean ruins: useful but inconsistent

Underwater ruins can contain prismarine and sea lanterns. They are convenient when you encounter one during exploration, but their generation is inconsistent and their quantities are usually less predictable than a monument’s. Treat ruins as a supplementary source for small projects rather than your primary bulk-mining strategy.

Guardians and elder guardians: renewable materials

Guardians live in ocean monuments. Their drops include prismarine shards and, in some cases, prismarine crystals. Once a monument is secured, a guardian farm can turn those drops into a repeatable supply of shards, crystals, experience, and fish. This route takes more preparation than simply mining blocks, but it supports continuing construction instead of exhausting a one-time deposit.

Find a monument with an ocean explorer map

A cartographer can sell an ocean explorer map that points toward an ocean monument. If you are struggling to locate a monument by searching deep oceans, trading for the map changes the task from random exploration to a directed expedition.

  1. Locate or create a cartographer villager and check the villager’s available trades.
  2. Acquire an ocean explorer map when it is offered.
  3. Follow the map marker toward the monument area, carrying enough supplies for a long trip over and under water.
  4. Use the map to choose a staging point near, but not directly inside, the monument before beginning the assault.

The map identifies a destination; it does not remove the need for underwater breathing, guardian protection, or a method of dealing with Mining Fatigue.

Prepare before entering an ocean monument

A monument expedition fails most often because the player arrives with a good pickaxe but no way to stay underwater or recover from guardian attacks. Assemble the following kit before you dive:

  • A strong pickaxe: you will be breaking a large number of monument blocks, often while the Mining Fatigue effect is active.
  • Food: bring enough to restore health and maintain your normal exploration routine.
  • Water-breathing support: use whatever reliable method you have available so that an unexpected detour does not become an oxygen emergency.
  • Combat equipment: guardians make direct mining dangerous, so bring a weapon, armor, and a way to retreat.
  • Milk: milk can clear Mining Fatigue temporarily, allowing a short window for faster block breaking.
  • Building blocks and storage: temporary cover, a shoreline staging area, and spare inventory space reduce the risk of losing a haul.

Mining Fatigue and milk

Elder guardians apply Mining Fatigue inside monuments. The effect slows block breaking so severely that ordinary excavation can become impractical. Milk clears the effect temporarily, but it does not provide a permanent solution; you may need additional buckets for repeated visits. Drink it when you have reached a safe position and are ready to mine, rather than consuming it while exposed to guardians.

Use a conduit for sustained underwater work

A conduit can provide sustained underwater breathing, improved underwater visibility, and faster underwater mining after its frame is activated. This is particularly valuable when you intend to clear a monument, establish a guardian farm, or build a permanent underwater base.

The conduit frame requires at least 16 blocks made from prismarine or sea lanterns. You can use up to 42 blocks for the full effect. The frame is therefore both a reason to collect prismarine and a practical tool for collecting more of it.

  1. Collect enough prismarine or sea-lantern blocks to meet the frame requirement.
  2. Build the conduit frame in the water around the conduit, leaving the conduit in the correct central position for activation.
  3. Start with at least 16 valid blocks if resources are limited.
  4. Expand the frame toward the 42-block maximum when you want the full effect and have enough material.
  5. Confirm that the conduit activates before committing to a long mining session.

Build the frame in a location where you can return safely. A conduit near your monument staging area can support repeated trips, while a temporary frame inside a dangerous room may be difficult to maintain.

Step-by-step monument mining plan

1. Establish a staging point

Set up storage, food, spare tools, and a retreat route on land or on a nearby boat. Keep the first load small enough that losing it will not end the project. Mark the route back to shore so you are not navigating by memory after a difficult fight.

2. Approach with breathing and visibility covered

Activate a conduit if you have one, or use another dependable water-breathing method. Entering without a breathing plan forces you to abandon mining whenever your air runs low and makes guardian attacks more dangerous.

3. Deal with the elder guardians

Expect Mining Fatigue and plan your milk use. Move to a protected position before drinking milk, then mine during the temporary window it provides. If you are making repeated trips, a conduit is more sustainable than relying entirely on buckets of milk.

4. Mine high-value blocks first

For a short visit, prioritize the prismarine variants and sea lanterns you specifically need. For a complete clear, work methodically through rooms and corridors, placing temporary markers so you know which areas have been searched.

5. Manage inventory continuously

Prismarine blocks are easy to collect in large numbers, and a full inventory can leave you unable to take sea lanterns or other useful drops. Return to the staging point before your inventory is full rather than risking a death while carrying the entire haul.

6. Leave a safe route for later visits

If you plan to build a guardian farm or return for additional materials, do not treat the first expedition as a one-time raid. Keep a marked approach, a functioning conduit area, and a stored reserve of food, tools, and milk.

What prismarine is used for

Building and architectural palettes

Prismarine gives builds a blue-green color that differs from the usual stone, deepslate, and wood palettes. Ordinary prismarine works well as a broad surface. Prismarine bricks introduce a regular pattern for towers, seawalls, temples, and floors. Dark prismarine provides visual weight around entrances, corners, roofs, and horizontal bands.

Design goal Suggested prismarine choice Why it works
Large uninterrupted surfaces Prismarine Its texture adds color without imposing a strong repeating grid.
Formal or geometric construction Prismarine bricks The patterned texture emphasizes symmetry and repeated shapes.
Contrast and edging Dark prismarine The darker tone separates trim from brighter blue-green walls.
Underwater illumination Sea lanterns They provide a bright light source that matches the aquatic theme.

Mixing all three variants prevents a large structure from becoming visually flat. Use the patterned blocks where a viewer will notice them, and save ordinary prismarine for foundations or hidden structural mass when shards are scarce.

Lighting with sea lanterns

Sea lanterns are bright light sources that fit naturally into underwater bases, monument restorations, aquariums, and ocean tunnels. You can recover them from monuments or produce them from prismarine resources. Place them in ceilings, floors, and repeating bands rather than scattering them randomly; their clean texture works especially well in symmetrical designs.

Conduit activation

Prismarine and sea-lantern blocks form the frame that activates a conduit. A minimum frame of 16 blocks is enough to begin, while a full 42-block frame provides the strongest effect. If you are planning a permanent underwater base, reserve material for the conduit before spending every shard on decorative blocks.

Guardian farms and megabuilds

A guardian farm can supply renewable prismarine shards, prismarine crystals, experience, and fish. Those outputs support both functional play and large decorative projects. The farm is most valuable when you expect to keep building after the monument’s original blocks have been mined.

Which acquisition method should you choose?

The best method depends on whether you need a one-time stockpile or a continuing supply. The following comparison separates immediate yield from long-term repeatability.

Method Preparation burden Danger Immediate yield Repeatability
Mine an ocean monument Strong tools, breathing support, food, and combat preparation High: guardians and Mining Fatigue High; finished prismarine variants and sea lanterns are already present Limited by the monument’s blocks
Run a guardian farm High; requires a secured monument and a farm build Concentrated during construction and maintenance Build-dependent rather than immediate High; produces renewable shards and crystals
Search ocean ruins Low to moderate exploration preparation Variable underwater risk Small or unpredictable Low and inconsistent
Recover existing sea lanterns Requires access to a monument or another structure containing them Usually tied to monument danger Useful for a small lighting job Finite unless you also gather crafting materials

Choose monument mining when

  • You need finished blocks now for a limited build.
  • You have a monument map or have already located a monument.
  • You can handle guardians and Mining Fatigue without building a permanent farm.

Choose a guardian farm when

  • You expect to use thousands of prismarine blocks over time.
  • You need a continuing supply of shards and crystals for sea lanterns or conduits.
  • You are willing to invest in construction after securing the monument.

Use ruins for small needs

Ruins make sense when you encounter them naturally and only need a modest amount. They are not a dependable replacement for a monument when the project requires bulk quantities.

Guardian farming as a renewable prismarine strategy

Guardian farming begins with monument access, so it is not a shortcut around the dangerous part of the process. First secure a workable approach, deal with the elder guardians, and create a safe operating area. Once the farm is functioning, guardian drops provide a repeatable source of prismarine shards and, in some cases, prismarine crystals, along with experience and fish.

The main advantage is continuity. Monument mining converts a fixed structure into a stockpile of finished blocks. A guardian farm converts repeated guardian spawns into ingredients that can be crafted into prismarine variants and used for sea lantern production. That distinction matters for megabuilds, where the first monument clear rarely supplies everything you will eventually place.

Keep the farm and conduit area accessible, store surplus shards near your crafting station, and decide in advance whether your priority is decorative blocks, sea lanterns, or experience. The farm’s value comes from repeated operation, so a safe route and convenient storage are as important as the initial construction.

Common problems and practical fixes

“I cannot find an ocean monument.”

Search specifically in deep ocean biomes or obtain an ocean explorer map from a cartographer. Randomly scanning coastlines and shallow water is inefficient because monuments are deep-ocean structures.

“Mining takes far too long.”

Check whether an elder guardian has applied Mining Fatigue. Milk clears the effect temporarily. For repeated or extended work, activate a conduit with at least 16 prismarine or sea-lantern blocks and expand it toward 42 blocks when you want the full effect.

“I found a ruin but not enough prismarine.”

That result is normal for an inconsistent source. Use the ruin as a supplement, then locate a monument for bulk material or establish a guardian farm for renewable shards and crystals.

“I ran out of air while mining.”

Stop mining before your breathing reserve becomes critical, retreat to your staging point, and improve your water-breathing support. A conduit is the durable answer for a base or a long excavation; temporary support is adequate only for short trips.

“I spent all my shards on blocks and cannot activate a conduit.”

Reserve the conduit frame material before crafting decorative variants. You need at least 16 prismarine or sea-lantern blocks for activation, with up to 42 blocks used for the full effect.

“My dark prismarine recipe will not work.”

Verify that you have both ingredients: eight prismarine shards and one ink sac. Dark prismarine is the only one of the three core recipes that requires the additional ink sac.

A practical progression from first shards to a permanent supply

  1. Start with exploration: collect any prismarine or sea lanterns you encounter in ruins, but do not rely on them for a large project.
  2. Locate a monument: search deep ocean biomes or use an ocean explorer map from a cartographer.
  3. Prepare deliberately: bring a strong pickaxe, food, water-breathing support, combat gear, milk, and storage.
  4. Secure a staging area: establish a retreat route before mining valuable blocks.
  5. Collect the first stockpile: mine the prismarine variants and sea lanterns you need for immediate construction.
  6. Activate a conduit: use at least 16 prismarine or sea-lantern blocks if you plan to continue underwater work.
  7. Scale up only when necessary: build a guardian farm when your projects require renewable shards, crystals, experience, and fish.

This progression avoids overbuilding. A small monument clear is enough for a single decorative project, while a conduit and guardian farm make sense when underwater construction becomes an ongoing activity.
