Minecraft parrots spawn in jungle biomes. Feed one an approved seed to attempt taming it, then use sit and shoulder mechanics to manage your pet. A tamed parrot can dance beside a jukebox that is playing a music disc, but parrots cannot be bred in vanilla Minecraft. Never feed a parrot a cookie: cookies are fatal in Java Edition and cause fatal poisoning in Bedrock Edition.

This guide covers the complete parrot loop: locating a bird, choosing seeds, taming it, getting it onto your shoulder, setting up a reliable dance area, recognizing cosmetic color variants, and avoiding the common breeding and feeding mistakes.

Where parrots spawn

Parrots are jungle-biome birds. If you are searching in plains, forests, deserts or villages, you are in the wrong habitat; move your search into a jungle before spending time looking for a bird. The jungle habitat is the key location fact identified by Minecraft’s advancement tutorial.

Jungles can be visually dense, so search methodically rather than sprinting randomly. Walk along clearings and the edges of thick vegetation, pause to scan above ground level, and check several parts of the biome before deciding that none spawned. Once you find a parrot, avoid charging through it: a grounded bird can be moved onto your shoulder by walking through it, so an accidental collision can change its position before you have decided where you want it.

What to bring on the search

  • At least one approved seed type for taming attempts.
  • A safe route back to your base, especially if the jungle is far from home.
  • A planned indoor or fenced destination if you intend to leave the parrot there instead of carrying it.

Seeds are the only item category you need for taming. You do not need a special cage, a breeding item or a music disc until you are ready to demonstrate dancing.

How to tame a parrot

Taming is an item-by-item process. Select an approved seed, use it on an untamed parrot, and continue until the game accepts the taming attempt. The seed list is broad, so use whichever listed crop seed you already have rather than delaying the trip to find one particular variety.

  1. Find an untamed parrot in a jungle biome.
  2. Hold an approved seed in your hand.
  3. Use the seed on the parrot to make one taming attempt.
  4. If the attempt does not tame the bird, use another approved seed and try again.
  5. Once tamed, stop feeding and switch to movement or sit controls; seeds are not a breeding trigger.

Microsoft’s official parrot article describes the core rule plainly: parrots can be tamed by feeding them seeds, unlike most passive mobs, but they cannot be bred. The taming action and the breeding action are separate systems, so a successful tame does not unlock a way to produce chicks.

Seed types that work

Microsoft’s Bedrock entity documentation lists six tame items for parrots. The names below use the documented item identifiers so you can match them to the items in your inventory.

Seed item Bedrock documentation status Practical use
Wheat seeds (wheat_seeds) Approved tame item Use when you have ordinary wheat-farm seeds available.
Pumpkin seeds (pumpkin_seeds) Approved tame item A useful alternative when pumpkin seeds are already in your inventory.
Melon seeds (melon_seeds) Approved tame item Works as another crop-seed option.
Beetroot seeds (beetroot_seeds) Approved tame item Use if beetroot farming is your easiest source.
Pitcher pods (pitcher_pod) Approved tame item Documented as a tame item in Bedrock.
Torchflower seeds (torchflower_seeds) Approved tame item Documented as a tame item in Bedrock.

The same Bedrock example assigns a 0.33 probability to each parrot taming use. Treat that figure as Bedrock component documentation for the documented version, not as a universal Java Edition percentage. It means each use is an independent attempt with a roughly one-in-three chance in that Bedrock example; several failures in a row are therefore possible and do not prove that the bird or seed is broken.

Why a seed may appear not to work

  • You may be using a food item that is not one of the six documented tame items.
  • The parrot may already be tamed, in which case the relevant controls are follow and sit rather than a new taming roll.
  • You may be playing an edition or version whose implementation differs from the Bedrock documentation. The 0.33 figure is specifically an edition-labeled Bedrock value.
  • The use may have targeted the ground or another block instead of the parrot. Aim at the bird itself and watch for the game’s taming feedback.

Keeping a tamed parrot under control

A tamed parrot follows its owner by default. That behavior is convenient while exploring, but it is not always desirable in a base, around a farm or near a dangerous drop. Use the sit command when you want the bird to remain in place; make it stand again when you are ready to travel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Making a parrot sit or stand

  1. Face the tamed parrot you want to control.
  2. Use the game’s interact control on the bird to toggle its sit state.
  3. Leave it sitting while you work around the base, then interact again to release it before heading out.

The exact button differs between keyboard, controller and touch layouts, but the target is the same: interact with the tamed parrot itself. If the bird keeps following, verify that you selected the bird rather than a nearby block and that the interaction was not interrupted by another action.

Putting a parrot on your shoulder

To pick up a grounded tamed parrot, walk through it. The official Minecraft description says that passing through a parrot on the ground places it on a player’s shoulder. A player can carry two parrots at once, one on each shoulder.

  1. Release the bird from its sitting state if necessary.
  2. Stand close enough that the parrot is on the ground beside you.
  3. Walk through the bird rather than trying to jump onto it.
  4. Repeat with a second grounded parrot if you want one bird on each shoulder.

Shoulder transport is useful for moving a pair without asking them to trail behind you. Plan the destination before you pick them up, because changing direction, jumping or entering uneven terrain can make a shoulder trip less predictable than a controlled indoor route. If you want a bird to stay at a particular room or perch, use the sit control after you have placed it there.

How to make a parrot dance

Dancing requires two things: a jukebox with a music disc inside it and a parrot close enough to the jukebox. Minecraft’s official article summarizes the interaction as a parrot dancing when it is near a jukebox containing a music disc.

Jukebox setup

  1. Place a jukebox in a location where the parrot can remain nearby.
  2. Insert a music disc into the jukebox.
  3. Bring a tamed parrot close to the jukebox, or allow a nearby parrot to approach.
  4. Watch the bird while the disc plays; dancing begins only when the proximity requirement is met.
  5. Keep the parrot within the documented range while the music continues.

The community mechanics reference describes the dancing radius as three blocks. Build the demonstration area conservatively: place the bird and jukebox close together instead of testing the edge of the radius. If the parrot flies beyond three blocks, it stops dancing. A large room, a sudden flight path or an obstacle that sends the bird away can therefore make a working jukebox look faulty.

Reliable dance-area layout

For repeatable results, put the jukebox near the center of a small, enclosed room and bring the parrot to the floor beside it. Keep the room compact enough that the bird cannot easily leave the three-block radius. If you are using two parrots, start with one bird so you can confirm the setup, then bring the second into the same close area.

Use the sit control when you need the parrot to remain at a chosen spot before starting the music. If a sitting bird is not in a useful position, release it, reposition it, and toggle sit again. The goal is not a special dance command; the jukebox-and-disc proximity is the trigger.

Dance troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix
No dance starts The jukebox is empty or the disc was not inserted. Interact with the jukebox and confirm that a music disc is inside and playing.
The bird danced, then stopped The parrot moved beyond the three-block dancing radius. Move the jukebox closer, enclose the area, or bring the parrot back beside it.
Only one of several birds dances Some birds are outside the effective radius. Place every parrot close to the jukebox before starting the disc.
The bird will not stay near the jukebox It is following you or has room to fly away. Use the sit control, then use a compact enclosed setup.

Can you breed parrots in Minecraft?

No. Parrots are not breedable in vanilla Minecraft, so there is no approved pair of parrots, seed recipe or cooldown that produces a baby parrot. You can tame additional wild birds, but taming two birds does not create a breeding state.

The advancement named The Parrots and the Bats causes confusion because its title mentions parrots. That advancement is a general breeding advancement name; it does not make parrots breedable and does not add a parrot-breeding recipe. If you are following a guide that tells you to feed two parrots until hearts appear, that instruction does not apply to the base game.

How to expand a parrot collection instead

  1. Return to jungle biomes to locate additional wild parrots.
  2. Carry enough approved seeds for separate taming attempts.
  3. Tame each bird individually.
  4. Use shoulder transport or the sit control to organize the birds at your base.

This is the supported vanilla process. It takes another jungle search and another set of taming attempts, but it avoids wasting seeds on a breeding interaction that the game does not provide.

Never feed cookies to a parrot

Cookies are dangerous, not a treat. The Minecraft Wiki documents cookie feeding as fatal in Java Edition and fatal poisoning in Bedrock Edition. The implementation details differ by edition, but the practical rule is identical: do not use a cookie on a parrot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Keep cookies away from the hotbar slot you use when interacting with pets.
  • Use one of the six documented seed items for a wild bird.
  • If you accidentally select a cookie, switch items before interacting with the parrot.

Do not infer that an item is safe merely because a parrot accepts seeds. Taming foods and harmful foods are separate mechanics, and cookies are the critical exception to remember.

Parrot color variants

The base game includes red, blue, green, cyan and gray parrot variants. These colors are cosmetic: they do not change the seed list, the Bedrock taming probability example, shoulder capacity, jukebox behavior or the inability to breed.

Choose a bird by appearance if you have a color preference, but do not delay a rescue or taming opportunity because you expect a rarer gameplay variant. Once tamed, every listed color follows the same control rules.

Edition and version notes

Most of the player-facing behavior is shared in the descriptions of parrots: jungle habitat, seed taming, following, sitting, shoulder carrying and jukebox dancing. The numerical taming value requires more care. Microsoft’s 2026 Bedrock entity documentation uses a 0.33 probability in its parrot example and lists the six tame items shown above.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That documentation is an implementation reference for Bedrock. It does not establish a Java Edition probability, and it should not be quoted as a cross-edition guarantee. If you are writing a farm plan, testing a challenge or comparing editions, label the 0.33 figure as Bedrock-specific and treat unlisted edition values as not stated rather than guessing.

A practical parrot workflow

The following routine keeps the mechanics in an order that minimizes accidental losses and wasted supplies.

  1. Locate the habitat: travel to a jungle biome and search clearings and vegetation edges.
  2. Prepare the tame item: place wheat, pumpkin, melon, beetroot, pitcher-pod or torchflower seeds in an accessible slot.
  3. Tame deliberately: target the bird itself and repeat attempts until it becomes your tamed parrot.
  4. Choose a control mode: leave it following for exploration, or toggle sit when you need a stationary pet.
  5. Transport: walk through a grounded bird to place it on a shoulder; carry up to one bird per shoulder.
  6. Stage entertainment: place a jukebox, insert a music disc and keep the bird within three blocks.
  7. Protect the bird: never use cookies, and do not search for a breeding recipe that vanilla Minecraft does not support.

Common mistakes and fast fixes

Searching outside a jungle

If no parrots appear, confirm the biome before changing seeds or assuming a bug. The documented habitat is the jungle, so relocate the search rather than repeatedly scanning an unsuitable area.

Expecting every seed to work

Use only the six documented Bedrock tame items. A generic food item or an unlisted seed is not a substitute. On Bedrock, remember that each documented attempt has a 0.33 probability in the example, so failure on the first use is normal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Trying to breed a pair

Two tamed parrots remain two separate pets. The correct way to obtain another bird is to find another wild parrot and tame it.

Placing the jukebox too far away

Keep the parrot and jukebox in the same compact area. The documented community radius is three blocks, and flying beyond it ends the dance.

Using a cookie by mistake

Stop and switch to an approved seed before interacting. Cookie feeding is fatal in both editions, with the effect described as fatal poisoning in Bedrock.

Key rules to remember

  • Jungles are the parrot habitat.
  • Seeds tame parrots; the documented Bedrock tame list contains six items.
  • A tamed parrot follows until you tell it to sit.
  • Walking through a grounded parrot puts it on a shoulder, with one bird per shoulder.
  • A jukebox containing a music disc makes a nearby parrot dance; keep it within three blocks.
  • Vanilla parrots cannot breed, regardless of the advancement title The Parrots and the Bats.
  • Cookies must never be fed to parrots.
