Short answer: The native Minecraft version for Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for October 27, 2026, and adds Vibrant Visuals by default, Switch-world carryover, and an updated Super Mario Mash-Up pack. If you already own Minecraft digitally on Switch, you can get the Standard Edition Switch 2 upgrade free in most territories through January 2027. Keep in mind that Vibrant Visuals is unavailable in split-screen and some other content, and official sources have not published a frame-rate or resolution comparison.
What changes in the Switch 2 version?
Mojang announced a native Switch 2 version optimized for the newer console, scheduled to release on October 27, 2026. That is distinct from playing the existing Switch game through Switch 2’s backward compatibility. The native version is the one explicitly announced with the changes below.

Vibrant Visuals is enabled by default
The Switch 2 listing says Vibrant Visuals is enabled by default. Mojang describes directional lighting and volumetric fog; Nintendo highlights enhanced lighting, shadows, and water reflections. It is a visual upgrade, not a published performance specification. Nintendo also notes that the feature is unavailable in split-screen and some Marketplace worlds or content, so it should not be expected in every mode.
Switch worlds can carry over
Nintendo says players can carry over their Switch worlds and continue where they left off. The listing does not detail every transfer condition or how every Marketplace item is handled, so check the in-game or eShop transfer instructions when moving a specific world or content.

The Super Mario Mash-Up pack is updated
The Switch 2 release includes the Super Mario Mash-Up pack, updated for Vibrant Visuals. Nintendo lists a themed world, 15 music tracks, and 40 player skins. The pack is exclusive to Nintendo versions of Minecraft.
What is not known about performance?
The official announcements describe the native version as optimized for Switch 2 hardware, but do not give a frame-rate target, resolution, draw distance, loading-time result, or measured comparison with the Switch edition. The game has not yet reached its announced release date as of October 13, 2026. Claims that it runs at a specific frame rate or resolution are not supported by the published information.

Mojang’s preorder page describes a limited-time offer through Nintendo eShop for existing digital owners of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch. The offer is for the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition; it does not mean every edition or physical purchase receives the same price.
- Most territories: The Standard Edition digital upgrade is free through the end of January 2027.
- Japan: The listed Standard Edition upgrade price is 100 JPY.
- Taiwan: The listed Standard Edition upgrade price is 30 NTD.
- Deluxe and Ultimate Collection: Upgrades are discounted, but the source does not give a single price that applies across territories.
Confirm the offer and eligibility in the eShop for your account’s territory before purchasing. The announcement also confirms a physical retail Switch 2 edition, but does not establish a universal physical price.

Will the current Switch game work on Switch 2?
Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Switch games, while warning that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. That general compatibility policy is not a guarantee for every game or feature, and it is separate from Minecraft’s specific upgrade offer. The native Switch 2 edition is the version explicitly announced with Vibrant Visuals and the updated Mario pack.
