Yes—you can now craft name tags in both Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. The Tiny Takeover game drop, released on March 24, 2026, added a deterministic recipe: combine 1 paper with 1 metal nugget. To use the result, rename the tag in an anvil, then hold the renamed tag and use it on a mob. The tag is consumed and the mob displays your custom name.

Name tags are also still obtainable from generated-structure chest loot and fishing. Those methods remain useful when you have not unlocked or gathered the crafting materials, but both depend on chance or exploration rather than a guaranteed recipe.

What changed with Minecraft name tags in 2026?

Older Minecraft guides commonly say that name tags cannot be crafted. That advice was correct for earlier game versions, but it is no longer correct in versions that include the Tiny Takeover drop. Mojang’s March 24, 2026 announcement says, “Name tags are now craftable using paper and any metal nugget.” The Java 26.1 release notes specify the quantity as one paper and one of any metal nugget. The Bedrock 26.10 changelog also documents the March 24 release and the craftable-name-tag change.

The practical consequence is simple: in a current Java or Bedrock installation containing Tiny Takeover, you do not have to wait for a rare chest find or a lucky fishing session. Once you have the two recipe ingredients, crafting is predictable. If you are playing an older release, the recipe may not appear even though a current guide describes it; edition and version therefore matter before you troubleshoot the recipe.

Name-tag recipe: one paper plus one metal nugget

Ingredient Quantity What the recipe requires
Paper 1 One paper in the crafting recipe.
Metal nugget 1 One metal nugget accepted by the current recipe; the recipe is not restricted to a single named nugget type.
Output 1 name tag The completed recipe produces a name tag that must be renamed before it can be applied to a mob.

The recipe uses one item of each ingredient, not a stack or a multi-step component. The important qualification is “accepted by the current recipe”: use a metal nugget that your edition and release recognize as valid. If a nugget is rejected, confirm that the game is running a version with Tiny Takeover and that the item is the supported nugget for that recipe.

Crafting procedure

  1. Open a crafting interface in your world.
  2. Place one paper and one accepted metal nugget into the recipe input.
  3. Take the name tag from the output slot.
  4. Keep the tag available for the anvil-renaming step; a newly crafted tag is not yet ready to apply to a mob.

Because the recipe is deterministic, this route is the fastest choice when you already have paper and the required nugget. There is no need to search several structures or spend time fishing to obtain the item.

Other ways to obtain a name tag

Crafting is new, but it did not remove the older survival routes. Name tags can still appear in generated-structure chest loot, and they can also be obtained while fishing. The cited references confirm both routes, but they do not establish a current authoritative probability that can safely be quoted across editions and versions.

Generated-structure chest loot

Chest loot is an exploration-based method. You must locate a generated structure, search its containers and happen to receive a name tag in the generated loot. The result depends on the structures you can reach and the loot generated in your world. It can be worthwhile if you are already exploring, but it is not a guaranteed number of chests per tag.

Fishing

Fishing is a chance-based method. A name tag may be obtained during fishing, but each attempt does not guarantee one. This route can be convenient if you are already fishing for other reasons and do not have the crafting ingredients. It is less predictable when your immediate goal is a particular number of name tags.

Route comparison

Route Certainty Resource cost Time profile Best use case
Crafting Deterministic once the recipe is available and ingredients are on hand. 1 paper and 1 accepted metal nugget per tag. Immediate crafting after gathering ingredients. You need a tag now and are playing a Tiny Takeover version.
Structure chest loot Chance-based; the sources do not give a current universal probability. Exploration and access to generated structures. Depends on travel, structure discovery and loot generation. You are already exploring or have not gathered recipe materials.
Fishing Chance-based; the sources do not give a current universal probability. Fishing activity and the time spent making attempts. Variable and potentially lengthy because a tag is not guaranteed. You are already fishing and can wait for a random catch.

Do not treat an old percentage for fishing or chest loot as a current Java-and-Bedrock rule unless it is explicitly tied to your exact edition and release. No such cross-version figure is established here.

How to use a name tag on a mob

A name tag has a required preparation step. You cannot simply take an unnamed tag from your inventory and apply it. First give the tag its custom text in an anvil; only then can you use it on the target mob.

Step 1: Put the tag in an anvil

  1. Place an anvil where you can access its interface.
  2. Open the anvil and put the name tag into the anvil’s item-input slot.

The anvil is the tool used to assign the text that the mob will display. The tag remains an item while it is in the anvil, so do not leave the interface until you have taken the renamed result from the output slot.

Step 2: Enter the custom name

  1. Select the anvil text field.
  2. Type the name you want the mob to display.
  3. Take the renamed name tag from the output slot.

The item you remove from the output slot is the usable, renamed tag. If you still have the original unnamed tag in your inventory, repeat the anvil process; the mob-application step requires the renamed version.

Step 3: Apply the renamed tag

  1. Hold the renamed name tag in your active hand.
  2. Use it on the target mob.
  3. Verify that the mob now displays the custom name.

Using the renamed tag consumes it. Plan your naming session accordingly: one tag names one target through this use, so keep additional tags if you intend to name several mobs.

Villagers and wandering traders behave differently at the interaction point

Using a name tag on a villager or a wandering trader renames that mob instead of opening the trading interface. This matters when you are trying to trade and accidentally have a name tag selected. Switch to the item you intend to use for trading before interacting with the villager or wandering trader; select the renamed tag only when your goal is to apply the name.

The same anvil preparation still applies to these mobs. Rename the tag first, hold the renamed result and then use it on the villager or wandering trader. The tag is consumed when the name is applied.

Java and Bedrock version compatibility

Edition or reference What is established What to check
Minecraft: Java Edition 26.1 The release notes give the recipe as 1 paper and 1 of any accepted metal nugget. Confirm that your installation is running a release containing Tiny Takeover rather than an older version.
Minecraft: Bedrock Edition 26.10 The changelog describes the March 24, 2026 release and craftable name tags. Confirm that the world and client have updated to a release containing the drop.
Other or earlier versions No current official release notes establish that the new recipe is present. Use the release notes for your exact edition and version; pre-Tiny-Takeover instructions may still describe name tags as unobtainable by crafting.

Mojang’s Tiny Takeover FAQ identifies the drop as available for both Java and Bedrock. If a current recipe is missing, first identify the edition and exact version, then update to a release that contains the drop if your platform supports that update. A world created before the update is not, by itself, evidence that the recipe is unavailable; the relevant factor is the game version running the world.

Choosing the right acquisition method

Choose crafting when certainty matters

Crafting is the clearest route when you have one paper and one accepted metal nugget. It converts known materials into a known output, so you can plan how many tags to make without relying on random loot. This is especially useful when you need several names for a group of mobs or when a long fishing session would delay another task.

Choose chest loot when exploration is already your plan

Chest searching makes sense when you are traveling through generated structures anyway. A tag found during that trip costs no additional fishing time, but the route cannot promise that the next chest will contain one. Treat a found tag as a bonus from exploration rather than a guaranteed supply.

Choose fishing when waiting is acceptable

Fishing remains an alternative for players who are already fishing and do not need an immediate, predictable result. Because the references provide no current universal drop probability, set expectations around uncertainty rather than a promised number of casts.

Troubleshooting common name-tag problems

The name-tag recipe does not appear

  • Check whether the game is Java or Bedrock and record the exact version.
  • Confirm that the version includes the Tiny Takeover drop released on March 24, 2026.
  • Verify that the input is one paper and one metal nugget accepted by the current recipe.
  • If you are following an older guide, do not use its “cannot be crafted” statement as a test for a current installation.

The crafting output is empty

  • Remove and replace the ingredients to ensure the interface recognized them.
  • Use exactly one paper and one supported metal nugget.
  • Check that you have not substituted an item that looks metallic but is not an accepted nugget for the recipe.
  • Recheck the edition and version after confirming the item inputs.

The tag will not apply to a mob

  • Open an anvil and make sure you entered a custom name in the text field.
  • Take the renamed tag from the output slot; the original input is not the item to apply.
  • Hold the renamed tag in your active hand before using it on the mob.
  • Remember that successful application consumes the tag, so an already-used tag cannot be applied again.

Trading opens when you meant to rename a villager

Villagers and wandering traders use their normal interaction for trading. Select the renamed name tag before using it on the mob. With the tag selected, the interaction renames the villager or wandering trader instead of opening the trading interface.

A reliable workflow for naming one or many mobs

  1. Identify your edition and version, ensuring Tiny Takeover is included.
  2. Gather one paper and one accepted metal nugget for each tag you intend to craft, or obtain tags through chest loot or fishing.
  3. Craft the tags when using the new recipe.
  4. Prepare an anvil and rename each tag individually in its text field.
  5. Take each renamed tag from the output slot before moving to the next one.
  6. Hold one renamed tag and use it on the intended mob.
  7. Confirm the displayed name before selecting another target.
  8. Keep unused tags separate from renamed tags so you do not accidentally apply the wrong name.

This sequence separates acquisition, text entry and mob application. That makes it easier to diagnose a problem: a missing recipe is a version or ingredient issue, while a tag that will not apply is usually an anvil-renaming or item-selection issue.

What current guides should and should not claim

A current guide can state that name tags are craftable in Java and Bedrock versions containing Tiny Takeover, with a recipe of one paper and one accepted metal nugget. It can also state that chest loot and fishing remain available. It should not present an old “name tags cannot be crafted” rule as universal, and it should not attach a single fishing or chest-loot percentage to every edition and version when no current authoritative figure is established.

For a player, the actionable conclusion is version-aware: update or verify the game first, craft when you want certainty, and use an anvil before applying any tag to a mob.
