For the fastest dependable mushroom supply, use mycelium in a Mushroom Fields biome or build a bone-meal-powered huge-mushroom farm. Small mushrooms can be grown elsewhere, but their spread is slow and their light requirements make hostile-mob control the main design problem. Mooshrooms add a renewable food and milk source, and a brown mooshroom can produce suspicious stew with flower-specific effects.
This guide explains how to locate Mushroom Fields, establish each type of farm, manage mooshrooms, craft both stews, and choose a setup based on whether you need food, blocks, or status effects.

Mushroom Fields is a rare ocean-island biome. Its surface is covered in mycelium rather than grass, and it naturally contains red mushrooms, brown mushrooms, huge mushrooms, and mooshrooms. Mojang describes it as the only home of mooshrooms. The lack of ordinary grass is the quickest visual clue: when an island has a purple-gray surface and no grass at all, you have likely found the biome.
Mycelium changes the farming equation. Mushrooms planted on ordinary dirt-like blocks normally need a low light level, while mycelium allows them to be planted and grown at any light level. You can therefore run an outdoor mushroom farm in daylight without building a dark room. Mycelium is also a distinctive decorative block, so a Mushroom Fields base can supply both a growing surface and a building material.

How to find a Mushroom Fields biome
Search the right terrain
Look for a small or large island surrounded by ocean. The biome is uncommon and usually appears as an isolated landmass rather than a broad mainland region. Sail or fly along ocean routes, checking shorelines for the unmistakable mycelium color and the absence of grass.
Confirm the biome before moving animals
- Check that the ground is mycelium, not gray-looking stone or another purple-toned block.
- Look for naturally occurring red and brown mushrooms.
- Watch for mooshrooms; they spawn naturally in this biome.
- Verify that the island has enough flat space for a pen, storage, and a portal or dock if you intend to establish a permanent base.
There is no reliable universal distance, seed, or player-population statistic for locating one. World generation, edition, and seed determine where yours appears, so exploration and map or seed tools appropriate to your edition are the practical approach.
Prepare for the trip
- Bring a boat and spare food for a long ocean search.
- Carry wheat if you plan to breed mooshrooms immediately.
- Bring leads, boats, or a rail-and-portal transport plan before attempting to move animals to your base.
- Take samples of mycelium with a tool that can obtain the block if you want to reproduce the outdoor growing surface elsewhere; the exact collection behavior depends on your edition and tool.
Choose a mushroom production method
The best design depends on four trade-offs: startup resources, footprint and headroom, light and hostile-mob safety, and the output you actually need.
| Method | Startup requirement | Space and light | Typical strength | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Huge-mushroom farm | One red or brown mushroom, a suitable block, and bone meal | Needs a clear vertical and horizontal growth area; mycelium, podzol, and nylium permit outdoor growth | Fast burst harvest; at least 20 mushrooms from a harvested huge mushroom, plus decorative blocks and stems | Consumes bone meal and needs clearance |
| Small-mushroom spread farm | A few starter mushrooms and a valid substrate | Ordinary growth needs light level below 13; darkness must be balanced against hostile-mob prevention | Uses little or no bone meal after startup and can run continuously | Spread attempts are slow and location rules limit expansion |
| Mooshroom pen | Mooshrooms transported from Mushroom Fields; wheat for breeding | Any secure animal enclosure | Repeatable mushroom stew, milk, and renewable animals | Requires finding and transporting the animals; shearing changes them into normal cows |
Build a huge-mushroom farm
Huge mushrooms are the practical choice when you need a large quantity quickly. Bone meal converts a planted small mushroom into a huge red or brown mushroom if the substrate and surrounding clearance are suitable.
Step 1: Select the substrate
Place the starter mushroom on dirt, grass, or another accepted block. Podzol, mycelium, and nylium are especially useful because they allow outdoor growth without a dark roof. If bone meal fails, move the mushroom to one of these suitable substrates or check the space above it before changing anything else.

Step 2: Make room for the canopy
Clear nearby blocks and leave substantial headroom. The exact footprint varies with mushroom type and edition, but a cramped cave, low ceiling, or adjacent wall can prevent generation. For a repeatable farm, mark each planting square and keep paths outside the growth volume so the next mushroom can be harvested without obstructing the following one.

Step 3: Apply bone meal
- Plant a red or brown mushroom on the prepared block.
- Hold bone meal and use it on the mushroom.
- If it grows, harvest the huge mushroom with the tool and enchantment appropriate to the block yield you want.
- Collect the small mushrooms, mushroom blocks, and stems, then replant one starter mushroom for the next cycle.
A huge mushroom harvest yields at least 20 mushrooms according to the current Minecraft Wiki tutorial reference. Block drops depend on how you harvest, so a farm intended for construction should be designed around the tool and enchantment rules of your edition rather than assuming every block will drop.
Make the farm sustainable
- Keep a reserve of bone meal in a nearby chest; a composter or skeleton-based supply can support the operation, but the exact production rate depends on your wider base.
- Separate red and brown planting lanes if you need both colors for stew.
- Use mycelium, podzol, or nylium when you want an open-air layout; use a roof or enclosed room only when you have a reason to control the environment.
- Leave enough clearance for the largest shape your edition can generate, not merely the first one that happened to grow.
Build a small-mushroom spread farm
Small mushrooms can multiply without bone meal, but this is a patience-oriented design. The farming tutorial used by the Minecraft Wiki describes a 4% chance for a spread attempt on a random tick, with additional limits based on nearby mushroom counts and whether the destination is valid. A successful attempt is therefore not guaranteed every time the game checks the area.
Use the correct light level
On ordinary substrates, mushrooms need a light level below 13. Mycelium, podzol, and nylium are exceptions, allowing growth at any light level. Decide first whether you want a dark conventional room or an illuminated outdoor mycelium floor; mixing the two assumptions is a common reason for apparent farm failure.
Lay out the room
- Choose a room or platform where you can control every block that might become a destination.
- Place starter mushrooms with open valid spaces around them, while avoiding a dense cluster that reaches the nearby-count limit.
- Keep the floor and walls made from blocks that accept the mushroom in your edition.
- Build access paths and collection points so you can harvest without accidentally replacing the valid spaces with torches, slabs, water, or other unsuitable blocks.
Prevent hostile mobs without invalidating the farm
A fully dark room can allow hostile mobs to spawn. The tutorial documents several compromises: soul torches, recessed torches, and one-block-high layouts. Use lighting that keeps the room safe while preserving the light conditions required by the mushrooms, or make the ceiling and floor geometry prevent hostile spawning. Test the arrangement in your edition because light and spawning rules can change between releases.

Why spread appears to stop
- The area is too bright for the substrate you used.
- Nearby mushrooms have reached the local limit.
- There are no valid adjacent destination blocks.
- The room is loaded infrequently, so random ticks occur slowly.
- Hostile-mob-proofing changed the floor or light level.
Move a few mature mushrooms to a second chamber if the local count is high, and inspect every potential destination rather than waiting indefinitely for a crowded patch to expand.
Keep and use mooshrooms
Mooshrooms naturally spawn in Mushroom Fields and can be bred with wheat. Once you have moved a pair to a secure pen, they provide repeatable resources without requiring a mushroom crop to regrow between servings.
Milk and stew from a red mooshroom
- Place a bowl in your hand and use it on the mooshroom to receive mushroom stew.
- Use an empty bucket instead when you need milk.
- Feed wheat to two mooshrooms to breed them and expand the herd.
Shearing a mooshroom removes its mushrooms and converts it into a normal cow, so do not shear an animal you intend to keep as a stew source. Keep the pen’s gate, lighting, and floor safe from escapes and environmental hazards.
Convert one to a brown mooshroom
Strike a red mooshroom with lightning to turn it brown. Lightning is hazardous, so use a controlled setup and protect yourself and nearby structures. A brown mooshroom can still be milked for ordinary mushroom stew, but it also enables flower-based suspicious stew.
Food: ordinary mushroom stew
Craft mushroom stew with one red mushroom, one brown mushroom, and one bowl. The food tutorial records 7.2 saturation for the stew. It is dependable when both mushroom colors are available, but the item does not stack, so inventory management matters during long trips or mining sessions.

Which food source fits your base?
- Use a crop or animal food instead when you need stackable meals for compact storage.
- Use a small or huge mushroom farm when you are near a large supply of bowls and want a renewable plant-based option.
- Use a mooshroom pen when convenience matters more than transporting separate red and brown mushrooms to a crafting table.
A mooshroom’s bowl interaction produces stew directly, avoiding the three-item crafting step for each serving, while a farm gives you the flexibility to use mushrooms for other recipes and decoration.
Suspicious stew and flower effects
Suspicious stew combines red and brown mushrooms, a bowl, and a flower. The flower determines the resulting status effect. You can also feed a flower to a brown mooshroom and then use a bowl on it to obtain suspicious stew with the corresponding effect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSet up repeatable production
- Build a secure pen containing at least one brown mooshroom.
- Plant or maintain a flower garden next to the pen, with the flowers separated and labeled by effect.
- Feed the chosen flower to the brown mooshroom.
- Use a bowl on the animal to collect the resulting suspicious stew.
- Repeat with the flower needed for the next batch.
Because the effect is tied to the flower, a mixed, unlabeled garden is easy to misuse. Store flowers in named chests or separate plots, and record the effect for the Minecraft edition and version you are playing before relying on the stew for combat or exploration.

Mushroom blocks and stems
Huge red and brown mushrooms generate colored mushroom blocks and stems. Harvested blocks provide a strong palette for roofs, walls, interiors, paths, and organic builds. A dedicated huge-mushroom farm is worthwhile when you need volume rather than occasional decorative accents.
Mycelium surfaces
Mycelium’s purple-gray color distinguishes paths, islands, and themed gardens. Its all-light mushroom behavior also lets you combine decoration and production: an outdoor plaza can function as a farm without covering the area in a dark roof.

Troubleshoot a farm that is not producing
The mushroom will not accept bone meal
- Check the substrate; move the mushroom to dirt, grass, podzol, mycelium, or nylium accepted by your edition.
- Remove blocks above and around the planting spot to provide the required clearance.
- Confirm that you are using bone meal on the mushroom itself, not on an adjacent block.
- Try a different location if the current shape cannot fit.
Small mushrooms are not spreading
- Measure the light level if you are using an ordinary substrate; it must be below 13.
- Switch to mycelium, podzol, or nylium if you want an outdoor, fully lit farm.
- Reduce the number of nearby mushrooms and add valid empty destination blocks.
- Stay close enough for the farm to receive random ticks.
The farm is full of hostile mobs
Do not simply add bright torches to a conventional low-light farm: that may solve mob spawning while stopping mushroom growth. Instead, use the documented compromises of soul torches, recessed lighting, or one-block-high geometry, and verify the result in your edition. Spawn-proof surrounding caves and platforms as well so mobs do not consume the available hostile-mob cap away from your intended farm.
The mooshroom disappeared or changed
- Check fences, gates, boats, and transport routes for escape gaps.
- Keep lightning away from red mooshrooms unless conversion is intentional.
- Do not shear animals reserved for stew production.
- Breed replacements with wheat once at least two compatible mooshrooms remain.
A practical progression plan
Early exploration
Search ocean islands and mark coordinates when you find Mushroom Fields. Harvest a few mushrooms, secure a pair of mooshrooms if transport is practical, and bring home enough material to start a controlled farm.
First permanent supply
Use mycelium for an outdoor starter patch if you have access to it. Add a bowl-making supply and a small animal pen. This combination gives immediate food while you decide whether you need the higher output of huge mushrooms.
Bulk production
Build a clear huge-mushroom lane and reserve bone meal for it. Plant red and brown varieties separately if stew is a goal; add a chest for blocks and stems if the farm is also a building-material source.
Automation-minded or low-bone-meal play
Expand a spread farm into multiple chambers, keep the light and substrate rules consistent, and accept that the 4% random-tick spread attempt makes this a slow accumulation method. Pair it with a mooshroom pen when you need food while the crop grows.
Version and edition caution
Mechanics can differ between Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, and individual releases. Mojang’s Java 26.3 Snapshot 1 lists Shelf Mushroom as testing content, including bone-meal growth, stew use, and wandering-trader availability. Snapshot features are not a promise for a final release, so treat Shelf Mushroom behavior as experimental until the target edition and release notes confirm it. The methods in this guide concern established red and brown mushrooms, huge mushrooms, mycelium, and mooshrooms; verify any detail that affects a critical build after an update.
