To play Minecraft with friends, first make sure everyone is using the same edition: Java players join Java games, and Bedrock players join Bedrock games. Then choose a connection method that fits the group: LAN for people on the same network, a friend’s online Bedrock world when its host is playing, a server for an independently hosted world, or a Realm for a private world that stays available when its owner is offline.

Start by checking Java versus Bedrock

Every player needs the same edition as the world or server they are joining. Java and Bedrock do not ordinarily play together, and putting a world online does not remove that edition boundary. Realms are also edition-specific. Minecraft explains the differences between the editions in its Java and Bedrock guide.

Ask each player which edition they have and what device they use before choosing a host. Keep the game updated, and make sure a Java server and its players are on compatible versions. Players using snapshots or previews may need to return to the latest full release for most servers, according to Minecraft’s server guide.

Choose how the group will connect

Option Best for Does the host need to be online? What to know
Bedrock friend world Friends who want to join a Bedrock player’s active world Yes Players need to be Minecraft friends. The host starts the world; guests go to Play > Friends and select the host under Joinable Friends. Minecraft Help
LAN Players on the same local network Yes The host opens a local world and guests join it. Bedrock and Java have different hosting steps. Bedrock LAN instructions
Online server A public server or a separately hosted world Not necessarily; it depends on the server Players connect using the server’s address. Bedrock’s manual server entry is available on computer and mobile; Minecraft Help says console editions are limited to featured servers. Bedrock server guidance
Realm A private hosted world for a group that wants access when the owner is away No Realms are edition-specific, and invited players can join without buying the owner’s subscription. Minecraft Realms

For a same-room session, try LAN first. For an online session where the host can stay in the game, the friend-world option is a simple Bedrock route. If the world needs to remain available without the owner, consider a Realm or a separately hosted server. Running a private server yourself may require home-network configuration; Minecraft advises users to do that only if they know what they are doing.

Join a friend’s Bedrock world

  1. Have the host sign in and start the Bedrock world with multiplayer enabled.
  2. Make sure the host and guest are friends in Minecraft and that both are online.
  3. On the guest’s device, open Play > Friends.
  4. Under Joinable Friends, select the host’s world. Menu wording can change with updates.

These steps follow Minecraft Help’s instructions for joining a friend’s Bedrock world. This route requires the host to be online with the world open.

Minecraft notes that Bedrock may default to online play rather than LAN when players are connected as Minecraft friends and online. They can still play together over the internet; being on the same network does not require LAN as the connection method.

Check accounts and platform requirements

Minecraft Help says console and mobile players need to sign in with a Microsoft account, and child accounts need multiplayer permission enabled. The exact child-account setup may vary, so use the account’s family or privacy settings if multiplayer is blocked. Console players may also need the console platform’s paid online-play subscription; the requirement and price depend on the platform. Minecraft summarizes these conditions in its multiplayer requirements. Its server guide states, “To play multiplayer, you’ll need to be signed in with a Microsoft Account.”

Troubleshoot a failed join in order

  1. Edition: Confirm that the player and world or server are both Java or both Bedrock.
  2. Version: Update the game and confirm Java players match the server’s supported version. Leave a snapshot or preview if the server requires a full release.
  3. Host or server status: Check that the friend’s world is open, or that the server or Realm is available.
  4. Friend or invitation access: Confirm the players are friends where required, or that a Realm invitation was accepted.
  5. Account permissions: Check Microsoft sign-in and child-account multiplayer permissions.
  6. Console subscription: Verify that the platform permits online multiplayer for the account.
  7. Network and address: Check connection stability and re-enter the server address and port carefully. Minecraft Help lists 19132 as the default Bedrock server port when one is required.

This order checks common compatibility and access blockers; it does not guarantee a fix for every network or platform issue.

Keep multiplayer safe

Join servers you trust and review their descriptions before connecting. Minecraft Staff’s official guide warns, “Never share your personal details.” That includes your real name, location, contact information, and password. Do not give anyone your account password to help you join a game. See Minecraft’s server and safety guide.
