The mace is Minecraft’s falling-attack weapon. In Java Edition 1.21, craft it from one Breeze Rod and one Heavy Core, then trigger its signature smash by falling more than 1.5 blocks and hitting an enemy before you land. A successful smash cancels the accumulated fall damage, adds fall-distance damage, resets your vertical momentum and knocks back nearby entities.

These headline values come from Minecraft’s official Java Edition 1.21 release article. Bedrock and later game versions can expose different numerical behavior, so keep the edition and version visible when testing damage.
What the mace does differently
A normal melee swing uses the weapon’s base damage. The mace also checks how far you have fallen immediately before impact. If the fall exceeds the smash threshold, the hit becomes a smash attack rather than an ordinary ground-level strike.

- The successful hit resets your vertical momentum, so the fall ends at the target instead of continuing through it.
- The game negates the fall damage you had accumulated from that fall.
- Fall-distance damage is added to the attack. The longer the qualifying fall, the larger this component becomes.
- Nearby entities receive strong knockback, making a smash useful for disrupting groups as well as damaging the entity you hit.
The release describes the trigger as: “When the player falls more than 1.5 blocks before hitting, a smash attack is triggered which has multiple effects.” The word more matters: a fall of exactly 1.5 blocks is not enough.
How to craft a mace
1. Get a Breeze Rod

The Heavy Core is tied to Trial Chamber Vault progression in the official snapshot documentation. You must reach the relevant vault content and obtain the core before the recipe becomes available. The snapshot reference is Minecraft Java Edition Snapshot 24w11a.
3. Use the crafting-table recipe
- Open a crafting table.
- Place one Breeze Rod and one Heavy Core into the mace recipe, or select the recipe in the crafting book once both ingredients are in your inventory.
- Move the finished mace into your inventory.
The recipe consumes exactly one of each component. If the recipe does not appear, confirm that you are playing a release that includes the mace and that both items are present; older worlds and snapshots may use different content.

4. Repair it when durability drops
Combine the mace with Breeze Rods in an anvil to repair it. This is the intended repair material, so keep spare rods while exploring. An anvil also lets you combine compatible enchanted maces or enchanted books, subject to the edition’s compatibility rules and the anvil’s level cost.
How to perform a smash attack
The basic sequence
- Stand above or jump above the target so you have a vertical fall to use.
- Begin falling. The qualifying distance is measured before the hit, not after you land.
- Keep the target under your crosshair and swing while you are still airborne.
- Connect before your feet touch the ground. A hit after landing is an ordinary melee attack and does not use the smash rules.
- If the strike connects after more than 1.5 blocks of fall distance, the game applies the smash effects and throws you upward or away according to the normal impact and any Wind Burst enchantment.
The safest training setup is a target beneath a short platform high enough to give a little more than the threshold. Increase the height only after you can consistently hit the target in midair; a missed strike leaves you to take the normal fall.

Using movement to set up another fall
Wind Charges can launch you upward and create another airborne approach. Wind Burst on the mace can launch you upward after a successful smash, which is the basis for chained attacks. Without a launch effect, you need a new ledge, jump, or other source of height for the next smash.
What happens when you miss
- Hitting too early, before the fall exceeds 1.5 blocks, produces no smash.
- Hitting after you have landed produces no smash.
- Missing the target does not cancel the fall; you can receive ordinary fall damage.
- A moving target can leave your crosshair during the descent, so begin the fall close enough to correct your aim.
Smash damage by version
The official Java Edition 1.21 release gives a tiered fall-distance schedule. The figures below describe the fall-distance component for that release, not a universal value for every edition or later patch.

The mace also has 5 base damage. Armor, protection effects, target type and enchantments affect the damage that actually reaches a target, so do not treat the table as a guaranteed health loss. The release’s complete weapon description is at Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.
Why older charts can disagree
During development, Java Edition Snapshot 24w13a recorded a revised baseline of 3 damage per fallen block. That is a snapshot value, not permission to replace the released 1.21 schedule in every guide or world. When comparing a test or a spreadsheet, record the exact edition, version and snapshot; otherwise two apparently conflicting numbers may both be accurate for their own builds.
Which mace enchantment is best?
There is no single best enchantment for every fight. Choose according to the source of your damage: longer falls, armored targets, aerial chaining, or sustained durability.

Microsoft’s enchantment reference describes Density as increasing “the damage dealt by maces per block fallen when performing smashing attacks.” Its current Bedrock documentation is available at Microsoft Learn’s enchantment guide. Do not transfer Bedrock damage numbers to Java without checking the relevant release.

Density: the fall-damage build
Density rewards the core mace loop: gain height, strike during the descent and repeat. It is the natural choice when you can reliably create tall drops and want each additional block to matter. It does not remove the need to hit before landing; a missed attack still leaves you with the normal fall.
Breach: the armor-target build
Breach reduces armor effectiveness by 15% per level, up to four levels under the official 1.21 rules. At level 4, that is a 60% reduction in the stated effectiveness of armor. Use it when the target’s protection, rather than your available fall height, is the main obstacle.
Wind Burst: the aerial-combo build
Wind Burst launches you upward after a successful smash. That upward reset can supply the height for another attack, letting a skilled player chain impacts across several nearby targets or keep pressure on one target. The official release states that Wind Burst is found in Ominous Vaults; higher levels are made by combining copies in an anvil.
Mending and Unbreaking: the practical survival choices
Mending and Unbreaking do not increase the first hit’s damage, but they determine how often you must replace or repair the weapon. Add them when the mace is a regular tool rather than a special-purpose raid weapon. Mending is particularly useful when your world already supplies a dependable flow of experience.

Smite, Bane of Arthropods and Fire Aspect
Smite and Bane of Arthropods are category-specific damage choices. Select Smite for an undead-heavy route and Bane of Arthropods for an arthropod-heavy route; neither is a universal improvement against every enemy. Fire Aspect adds burning utility and can finish weakened targets, but fire may be inconvenient around flammable builds or enemies whose drops you want to control.
Curse of Vanishing
Curse of Vanishing causes the mace to disappear when its holder dies. It offers no combat benefit and is normally a liability on a weapon you intend to recover after an accident.

The official 1.21 rules do not let Density, Breach and Smite stack freely. Treat them as alternative damage plans rather than assuming every damage enchantment can occupy one mace. Exact compatibility and available levels can vary between Java, Bedrock and later versions, so check the enchantment table or anvil in the release you actually play before spending rare books.
Choose Density when
- You can create repeatable drops or launch yourself upward.
- Your targets are not primarily defeating you with armor.
- You want the strongest scaling from additional fall distance.
Choose Breach when
- You regularly fight heavily armored players or mobs.
- You can secure only modest fall height but need each impact to penetrate protection more effectively.
- Your combat plan values a direct hit over repeated aerial movement.
Choose Wind Burst when
- You are confident in midair aiming.
- You want mobility as well as damage.
- You can turn one successful smash into a chain rather than being stranded after the first impact.
Add durability enchantments when
- The mace is your everyday weapon.
- You spend long periods away from an anvil or replacement materials.
- You prefer consistent availability over a narrow peak-damage setup.
How to get Density, Breach and Wind Burst
Wind Burst
Wind Burst is explicitly associated with Ominous Vaults. Obtain the enchantment there, then combine copies in an anvil to reach higher levels. The release documentation identifies the vault source and the anvil-combination method.
Density and Breach
The cited 1.21 release establishes what Density and Breach do, but it does not give one universal acquisition route that applies to every edition and version. Their availability, levels and eligible sources can change between Java and Bedrock. In your world, inspect the enchantment table, generated enchanted books and Trial Chamber-related loot available in that release, and use the anvil to apply a compatible book. If an anvil rejects the combination, the rejection is an edition/version rule rather than evidence that the mace is damaged.
A reliable combat workflow
- Scout the arena. Identify a ledge, stairwell or launch position that gives you more than 1.5 blocks of fall distance without trapping you afterward.
- Pick the target and build. Use Density for fall scaling, Breach for armor, or Wind Burst for a chain. Add Mending or Unbreaking if the fight may be prolonged.
- Start close to the vertical line. A short horizontal correction is easier than trying to chase a moving target from a tall drop.
- Fall and swing before landing. Watch the target, not the ground. The hit must occur during the descent.
- Exploit the result. After a normal smash, reposition for another height source. After Wind Burst, use the upward launch to line up the next impact.
- Recover from a miss. Move to safety, repair if needed and reset your height rather than repeatedly attempting blind drops.
Troubleshooting failed smashes

Java, Bedrock and version checks
The recipe, base damage and smash schedule cited above come from the Java Edition 1.21 release. Microsoft’s linked enchantment documentation is for Bedrock creators, while the development snapshot number is specifically Java 24w13a. Before relying on a damage calculator or enchantment list, write down:
- Edition: Java or Bedrock.
- Exact release or snapshot number.
- Whether the value is a release rule or a development experiment.
- The target’s armor and any protection effects.
- The mace’s enchantments and the fall distance measured immediately before impact.
This record prevents a snapshot baseline, a Bedrock definition and a Java release schedule from being mixed into one misleading formula.
