Place sticks down both outside columns of the grid and one stick across the center row, forming a capital H. The official Minecraft explanation describes the result this way: “They’re made by putting seven sticks in a crafting grid in an H-shape, which gives you three chunks of ladder.” That recipe and yield were documented by Minecraft writer Duncan Geere in 2019.

stick stickThe recipe returns three ladder blocks, so a vertical route consumes one ladder for every block of height. Plan the number you need before digging a deep shaft; crafting several batches is usually easier than stopping halfway up.
Where ladders can be found
You do not always have to craft them. The official Minecraft article also identifies ladders in village churches, strongholds, end ships, and igloos. Looting a structure can therefore provide a few ladders before you have collected enough sticks, but the H-shaped recipe is the dependable way to produce a large, predictable supply.

Where a ladder can be placed
Use a full solid block face
A ladder attaches to the side of a full solid block. Aim at the vertical face, place the ladder, and then repeat on the next block above or below. A partial, non-solid, or incorrectly targeted face will not provide the backing the ladder needs.
- Stand next to the block face that will support the ladder.
- Hold the ladder in your hotbar and aim at the vertical side of the full solid block.
- Place it, then move your crosshair to the adjacent face for the next segment.
- Inspect the finished line from below and above so every block in the route has a ladder attached to its supporting face.
Facing and block-state differences
Ladders have a facing direction. The way that state is exposed differs by edition, which matters when you use redstone, commands, block-state inspection, or automated building tools.

For ordinary hand-built shafts, the practical rule is simple: place the ladder on the wall you intend to climb and verify that its rungs face into the shaft. The edition-specific state becomes important when a design depends on water, trapdoors, or exact block orientation.

Trapdoor interaction in Java Edition
In Java Edition, an opened trapdoor directly above a ladder can become climbable when its orientation matches the ladder. This can let you pass through a compact hatch at the top of a shaft. If the trapdoor does not behave as expected, check both conditions: it must be open, and its orientation must match the ladder rather than merely being above it.
Waterlogged ladders
Water changes ladder behavior by edition. Java exposes a waterlogged ladder state. The cited reference notes that waterlogged ladders behave differently in Bedrock and cannot be climbed there. Do not assume that a ladder submerged in water will function as a normal climb route on both editions; test the exact arrangement in the edition and version you are using before building a critical escape shaft.
How climbing works
Normal ascent and descent
To climb, push your movement input toward the ladder. The character rises while the input keeps you engaged with the ladder and descends when you move down or release the upward movement. Keep your crosshair and body aligned with the ladder rather than trying to jump away from the wall.

Ascending in a 1×1 shaft
A ladder in a one-block-wide shaft leaves no room to strafe. In that arrangement, holding jump can make the player ascend without continuously supplying horizontal movement. Bedrock players can hold jump for faster climbing, according to the cited mechanics reference. If the climb stops, check that every block has a ladder, that the ladder is attached to the intended wall, and that you have not moved out of its collision volume.
Using sneak to stay secure
Sneaking keeps you attached to the ladder. Use it when building at the top of a shaft, lining up a jump from a ledge, or pausing to look around. It is also useful when you need to stop climbing without deliberately stepping away from the wall.
How ladders reduce fall danger
Entering the ladder volume
A ladder reduces downward speed while you are in its volume. If you fall past the wall and enter that volume, the ladder can catch you and turn an uncontrolled drop into a climbable position. This is why a continuous ladder line is more than a travel convenience: it provides a recovery route during a mistake.

Why the top edge is still dangerous
The narrow top surface of a ladder does not provide the same protection as being inside the ladder volume. Landing on that edge can still cause damage. Do not treat a ladder’s upper lip as a guaranteed safe landing platform. Finish the shaft with a full block, floor, or correctly aligned opening, and use sneak while positioning yourself at the exit.
Safer shaft habits
- Install the ladder as the shaft grows instead of leaving a completed drop with no return route.
- Check the ladder line from the bottom before committing to a long descent.
- Use sneak near openings and ledges so a small movement does not detach you.
- Provide a deliberate landing area at the top rather than relying on the ladder’s narrow edge.
- Test any water, trapdoor, or cross-edition design in a copy of the build before using it as an emergency exit.
The mining-shaft ladder trick
Build the escape route while digging
The dependable mining pattern is to extend a vertical shaft and place one ladder per block as you go. The ladder becomes a permanent route back to the surface, so you do not have to pillar-jump out after reaching the bottom.
- Choose the wall that will carry the ladder and keep it continuous from the surface to the working level.
- Dig down one block.
- Place a ladder on the newly exposed section of the wall.
- Repeat the dig-and-place cycle for each additional block.
- Before descending farther, climb back to the surface once to confirm that no segment was skipped.
- At the bottom, leave enough clear space to step off the ladder without landing on its narrow top edge.
Placing one ladder per block makes the return climb predictable. It also gives you a visual check: a missing rung marks the exact height where construction stopped. If you instead dig the entire shaft first, you risk reaching the bottom with no practical way to return except jumping, building temporary blocks, or making a second route.

Top and bottom layout
At the surface, end the ladder where you can step onto a solid floor or through a planned opening. At the mining level, leave a small chamber or widened landing so you can turn, store materials, and move away from the ladder safely. The ladder itself is the vertical transport; the floor around each endpoint should handle the horizontal movement.
