The secret igloo basement is under the carpet inside some igloos. Enter an igloo in a snowy biome, remove the floor carpet, and open the trapdoor if one is present. Only about half of igloos generate a basement, so an igloo without a trapdoor is not broken or incomplete. In a basement, protect the zombie villager from sunlight and hostile damage, throw the supplied Splash Potion of Weakness, and use the supplied golden apple to begin a cure that can take up to five minutes.
What an igloo is and why the basement matters
An igloo is a small snow-block house that generates in snowy Minecraft biomes. Because both the structure and the surrounding terrain are white, it can disappear into a snowfield until you are close to it. The structure is useful even when it has no hidden room: it provides immediate shelter and a small amount of starter equipment.
The unusual version contains a concealed underground room. Mojang’s official igloo description says that a trapdoor “sometimes” appears beneath the carpet and leads to a secret basement. Minecraft Wiki’s 2025–2026 page crawl gives the practical generation estimate of 50 percent. Treat that figure as an approximate world-generation statistic rather than a guarantee for every seed, edition, or game version.
The basement is more valuable as a ready-made villager-curing setup than as a treasure vault. It normally combines a zombie villager, a regular villager, a brewing stand containing a Potion of Weakness, a chest containing a golden apple, and a cauldron. The wiki also records a cobweb. The extra chest supplies described by Mojang are modest items such as coal, food, a gold nugget, or an emerald.

Where to look for an igloo
Search snowy biomes
Igloos generate in snowy terrain. Look across snow-covered landscapes rather than temperate forests, deserts, oceans, or ordinary plains. Exact biome names and generation behavior can vary between Java and Bedrock versions, so use the structure itself as the deciding evidence instead of relying on an assumed coordinate pattern.
Snow camouflage is the main difficulty. Scan for the igloo’s rounded snow-block outline, doorway, or a small break in an otherwise natural slope. Walk ridgelines and open areas slowly, and check behind snow layers that can hide the lower part of the walls. A structure may be easier to see from a nearby hill than from ground level.

Use shelter as your first confirmation
Once you find a small snow house, enter it and verify that it has the characteristic carpeted floor. Do not dig around the exterior looking for a separate entrance: the documented secret entrance is inside, beneath that carpet.
How to check for the hidden trapdoor
- Enter the igloo. Close or block the doorway if night is approaching so hostile mobs cannot wander in while you inspect the room.
- Find the carpet on the floor. The hidden access point is underneath this interior carpet, not outside the building.
- Remove the carpet pieces. Break the carpet directly over the floor area and collect it if you want to replace it later. Removing the covering exposes the block or trapdoor below.
- Look for a trapdoor and shaft. If a trapdoor is present, open it and follow the vertical passage down. A ladder or shaft connects the surface room to the basement.
- Stop if there is no trapdoor. That igloo is the surface-only variant. The absence of a trapdoor means there is no basement in that particular structure; it does not indicate that you missed an entrance on the outside.
A missing basement should not change how you search the rest of the world. Since basements are optional, the next igloo you find may have one even if the first several do not.

What is inside an igloo basement?
| Room feature | Practical use | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Zombie villager | Can be cured into a normal villager | Keep it protected while the cure runs. |
| Villager | Provides a second villager for a settlement or trading setup | Prevent accidental damage or escape before you decide what to do. |
| Brewing stand | Supplies the weakness effect needed for the cure | The official description places a Potion of Weakness in it; the walkthrough uses the resulting Splash Potion of Weakness. |
| Chest | Provides the golden apple and modest extra supplies | Mojang lists examples such as coal, food, a gold nugget, or an emerald. |
| Cauldron | Part of the room’s built-in utility setup | It is not the item that starts the cure; the weakness potion and golden apple do. |
| Cobweb | Decorative obstruction and environmental hazard | The Minecraft Wiki lists one among the basement contents. |
The room is cramped and can be dark, so make your first priority control rather than opening every container immediately. A zombie villager can be harmed by sunlight after it reaches the surface, and any hostile damage during the process can end the opportunity.
Secure the basement before touching the zombie villager
Do not begin the cure the instant you descend. First make the room safe enough for several minutes of waiting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Keep the zombie villager underground or shaded. It must not be exposed to direct sunlight while the cure is in progress.
- Block hostile access. Close the route to the surface and deal with any hostile mob already in the shaft or basement.
- Preserve both villagers. Avoid attacks that could hit the normal villager, and do not create a route through which either villager can wander away.
- Give yourself room to work. Remove or work around the cobweb and position yourself where you can throw the splash potion without getting trapped.
- Check your inventory before starting. You need a Splash Potion of Weakness and a golden apple. The basement is intended to provide both, but confirm that you have actually collected them before using either item.
These precautions matter because the cure is not instantaneous. Mojang and Minecraft Wiki describe a process that can take up to five minutes, during which the zombie villager still needs protection.
How to cure the zombie villager
Step 1: Obtain the supplied items
Open the basement chest and collect the golden apple. Check the brewing stand for the weakness potion. The official igloo description specifically identifies the brewing stand, a potion of weakness, and a chest with a golden apple as the key supplies. If the potion is not already in the form you can throw, prepare the Splash Potion of Weakness before attempting the cure; the documented sequence requires a splash effect on the zombie villager.

Step 2: Apply weakness
Equip the Splash Potion of Weakness and throw it so the cloud affects the zombie villager. A direct hit is the safest way to confirm that the effect reached the target. Keep the villager in the protected room while you do this.
Step 3: Use the golden apple
With the zombie villager weakened, equip the golden apple and use it on that same villager. The item sequence is important: splash weakness first, golden apple second. Using the apple before the weakness effect will not start the documented cure.
Step 4: Wait for the conversion
The zombie villager shows that the process has started, but conversion can take up to five minutes. Remain nearby and keep the room shaded and protected. Do not remove the villager’s protection simply because the animation or sound effects have stopped for a moment.
Step 5: Reorganize the new villagers
After conversion, you have two normal villagers in the igloo’s underground room. Move them only after the area is secure and you have a destination prepared. The practical payoff is the extra villager, which lets you establish a population for trading or another settlement without transporting a villager from a distant village.

Choose what to do after finding the basement
| Choice | Resource cost | Time and risk | Payoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leave immediately | No items used | Lowest immediate risk; you abandon the room’s contents | Keeps your inventory and avoids managing villagers, but gives up the basement supplies and curing opportunity. |
| Loot without curing | You may take the chest items and other equipment | Quickest way to collect supplies; the zombie villager remains uncured and the supplied golden apple and weakness potion are no longer being used for a second villager | Modest starter resources, including the listed golden apple and possible coal, food, gold nugget, or emerald. |
| Cure the zombie villager | Uses the Splash Potion of Weakness and golden apple | Requires a protected room and up to five minutes of waiting | Produces a second villager while retaining the regular villager already in the basement. |
There is no universal best choice. Leave if you only needed shelter and do not want to manage villagers. Loot if immediate supplies matter more than population. Cure when an additional villager is worth the potion, golden apple, setup time, and protection work.

“I cannot find the basement.”
Recheck the interior carpet before digging outside. Remove the carpet completely enough to expose the floor beneath it. If no trapdoor appears, accept that the igloo is a surface-only generation; the approximately 50-percent estimate means many legitimate igloos have no basement.
“The igloo is hard to see.”
Search from elevated ground, follow the edge of open snowfields, and inspect small rounded snow structures rather than looking only for a tall building. Snow layers can hide the lower walls and blend the roof into the landscape.
“The zombie villager died.”
Protect it before applying the potion. Check for sunlight through the shaft or an open roof, hostile mobs in the basement, and accidental player attacks. If the villager dies, the original igloo does not provide a replacement cure target.

“The cure did not start.”
Confirm that the potion was a throwable Splash Potion of Weakness and that its effect reached the zombie villager. Then use the golden apple on the weakened target. The order cannot be reversed.

Allow the full documented window of up to five minutes. Keep the zombie villager shaded and safe throughout that period rather than repeatedly moving it or exposing it to daylight.
“The villagers escaped through the shaft.”
Close the access route while working. The basement is a compact room, so decide where both villagers will live before opening the way back to the surface. Transport them only after you can control the route.
Edition and version considerations
The carpet check, optional trapdoor, basement layout, weakness-potion-and-golden-apple sequence, and villager-cure purpose are the shared mechanics documented by Mojang’s official igloo material and Minecraft Wiki. Exact generation behavior can differ between Java and Bedrock releases, and neither cited source supplies an edition-independent coordinate method, seed list, or command that finds every igloo. For that reason, this guide does not promise a universal location formula.
If your game behaves differently, verify the edition and version before assuming the structure is faulty. A structure that has no trapdoor can still be a correctly generated igloo, and a cure that appears slow can still be progressing within the five-minute window.
What rewards should you expect?
An igloo basement is not designed as a high-value treasure room. Its defining reward is the chance to convert one zombie villager and obtain a second normal villager using supplies placed in the structure. The chest’s additional contents are described by Mojang as modest supplies, with coal, food, a gold nugget, or an emerald among the examples. The cauldron, brewing stand, villagers, and enclosed room are utility features rather than a large loot cache.
If you are exploring early in a world, that combination can still be significant: the igloo supplies the central cure ingredients and removes the need to locate a separate zombie villager and gather the same materials elsewhere. If you already have an established village, the decision is mainly whether one more villager justifies spending the supplied golden apple and weakness potion.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Search snowy biomes for a small snow-block igloo.
- Enter the structure and inspect the carpeted floor.
- Remove the carpet; do not search for an exterior entrance.
- Open the trapdoor if one exists and descend the ladder or shaft.
- If there is no trapdoor, treat the igloo as a valid surface-only variant.
- Protect the basement from sunlight and hostile damage.
- Collect the Splash Potion of Weakness and golden apple.
- Throw the weakness potion at the zombie villager.
- Use the golden apple on the weakened villager.
- Wait up to five minutes without removing its protection.
