To defeat an ocean monument, prepare for two different threats: ordinary guardians that attack with charged lasers and defensive spikes, and exactly three elder guardians that apply Mining Fatigue III. Enter with strong armor, food, a melee weapon and/or bow, blocks for cover, and reliable underwater support. Reach and kill the three elders first—one in the upper section and one in each wing—then clear the remaining guardians and drain rooms with the wet sponges you preserve from the raid.
The safest strategy is controlled movement rather than a straight swim through open water. Establish an air pocket or retreat route, keep pillars and room corners between you and charging guardians, and treat milk as an emergency measure rather than a solution: it removes Mining Fatigue, but it also removes Water Breathing.
Which mobs live in an ocean monument?
Ocean monuments have two hostile aquatic mobs: guardians and elder guardians. The common guardian is dangerous in groups because several can charge their beams at once. Elder guardians are much more important during a first raid because their Mining Fatigue III effect makes emergency mining extremely slow.

The three elders are the raid’s priority even when ordinary guardians are the immediate visual threat. As long as an elder remains alive, Mining Fatigue can make it difficult to carve a new escape route, open a blocked room, or reach an air pocket by mining.

How guardian lasers and spikes work
Break the laser’s line of sight
A guardian needs several seconds to charge its beam. Rooms, monument pillars, corners, and other solid blocks interrupt that line of sight. Move from cover to cover instead of swimming in the open while multiple guardians are charging. If a beam starts tracking you, put a wall or pillar between yourself and the guardian before the charge completes.
An established air pocket or a route back to open water gives you time to recover, eat, change equipment, or wait out a dangerous group. Do not rely on outswimming several charging guardians in an exposed corridor.
Choose melee timing carefully
Guardians extend orange spikes when threatened. While those spikes are extended, hitting one with a melee weapon causes 2 damage to the attacker. Melee is still practical in confined rooms, but attack when you can retreat behind cover and avoid repeatedly trading damage in a narrow space.
Use ranged attacks when the room allows it
A bow can reduce the number of close-range exchanges and avoids triggering melee retaliation. It is most useful when a guardian is visible across a room or corridor and you can keep a pillar between yourself and other beams. In very tight spaces, a reliable melee weapon may be faster; switch tactics according to the available cover rather than committing to one weapon.

Why elder guardians are the first target
The three locations
Every monument contains exactly three elder guardians: one in the upper portion and one in each side wing. A practical route is to reach the top elder first when the approach allows it, then clear the left and right wings. The exact order can change if a wing gives you a safer entrance, but all three must be dealt with before the monument becomes easy to mine.
Mining Fatigue III
An elder guardian applies Mining Fatigue III to players within 50 blocks. The effect lasts five minutes. It can turn a block that would normally be an instant escape into a long, vulnerable mining attempt, which is why preparation and a preplanned retreat matter more than improvising after the effect appears.

What milk does—and does not do
Milk removes Mining Fatigue, but it removes Water Breathing at the same time. That makes milk a temporary reset, not a replacement for killing the elders or carrying underwater support. If an elder is still alive and close enough, the effect can return. Prioritize killing all three elders before depending on milk for the rest of the monument.
What to bring before entering
No single armor set is mandatory, but an underwater raid is far less forgiving without protection, food, cover blocks, and a way to breathe. The following options match the equipment and potion guidance in the cited adventure material.

How to defeat an ocean monument: a safe route
- Approach from above or through the front entrance. Pick the route that gives you the clearest retreat. Before fighting, establish an air pocket or a path back to open water. Place a few blocks where they can break a future laser sightline.
- Enter under cover. Use rooms, pillars, and corners as shields. Do not remain in open water while several guardians are charging. Move only after the immediate beam threat has been interrupted.
- Locate the top elder guardian first when feasible. The upper section can be a useful first objective, but safety takes precedence over a fixed compass direction. If a wing offers a much safer covered entrance, clear that wing instead.
- Fight the elder from cover. The elder has 80 HP and its laser deals 8 HP. Use a bow across a protected sightline or melee during brief openings, then retreat behind a wall before another beam completes. Avoid trying to tank the damage in open water.
- Clear both wings. One elder is in each wing. Keep the same pattern: advance from cover, identify the elder, attack during a controlled opening, and retreat before the surrounding guardians can focus you.
- Confirm that all three elders are dead before relying on mining. Mining Fatigue can be reapplied while an elder remains nearby. Milk can provide a short-term reset, but it will also remove Water Breathing and should not be your primary plan.
- Preserve the elders’ wet-sponges drops. Kill the elders as player kills rather than allowing environmental damage to finish them if you want to retain those drops. Dry wet sponges in a furnace or in the Nether.
- Drain useful rooms with the dried sponges. Once the elders are gone, use sponges to remove water from sections you want to work in. This creates safer fighting and building space while you clear the remaining guardians.
- Finish the ordinary guardians. After the elders are eliminated, use the same line-of-sight tactics to clear remaining guardians, then collect the monument’s blocks and drops.
How to fight each encounter inside the monument
Open-water approach
Open water gives guardians many angles and makes it harder to interrupt several beams at once. Keep the monument between you and some of the guardians where possible, and enter quickly through a route that leads to solid cover. If multiple beams begin charging, retreat rather than trying to finish one target in the open.
Corridors and rooms
Corridors favor short melee engagements because corners can break line of sight. Check the next room from cover, draw one guardian toward a defensible position, and avoid standing in the center where beams from adjacent spaces can overlap. A bow is valuable when a guardian is visible beyond a doorway.

The elder’s larger health pool and stronger laser make these rooms the most important places to slow down. Build or use a barrier, attack in short windows, and keep an escape path behind you. Do not mine a new exit as your first response to danger while Mining Fatigue is active; use the route and air pocket you prepared before entry.

The important practical difference is not a promise of a guaranteed Java “window.” In both editions, prepare as though Mining Fatigue will interfere with escape mining, and remove all three elders before converting the monument into a worksite or farm.

What guardians and monuments drop
Guardian drops
According to Mojang’s official description, a guardian can drop prismarine shards or prismarine crystals, a raw fish—or a cooked fish if the elder guardian is somehow killed by burning—and a wet sponge. The exact item obtained depends on the drop outcome and the circumstances of the kill. Guardians are also a source of experience when killed by the player.

The monument itself contains eight gold blocks, wet sponges, prismarine variants, and sea-lantern materials. The cited rewards also include the tide armor trim. Wet sponges are especially useful because drying them lets you remove water from rooms and create permanent working areas.
Why player kills matter
If you want the elders’ wet sponges, make the final blows yourself rather than relying on environmental damage. Secure the drops first; then you can use the sponges to improve the monument’s layout and make the remaining guardian cleanup easier.

Destroying or looting the monument does not automatically make the surrounding area permanently safe. Guardians require water and are tied to ocean-monument spawning rules, which differ between Java and Bedrock. If suitable water remains, guardians can continue to be renewable after the structure itself has been cleared.

That behavior is useful for a guardian farm. It also explains why a monument can feel “cleared” inside while guardians continue appearing outside. To stop that renewable activity, you must address the relevant water and spawning conditions for your edition, not merely remove the visible monument rooms.

A guardian farm turns the monument into a renewable source of prismarine shards, prismarine crystals, fish, and experience. Farm construction is an advanced follow-on project because it depends on edition-specific spawning rules, water management, and a large amount of building or draining work.
One optimized design reports 180,000 XP per hour. That is a design-specific claim, not a universal rate for every guardian farm. Results depend on the design, edition, surrounding conditions, and how completely the spawning area is controlled, so do not treat the figure as a guaranteed yield.
Common failures and how to recover
- You cannot mine an escape route. Mining Fatigue III is active. Retreat along the route prepared before entry, use an existing room or air pocket, and focus on killing the nearby elder. Milk can remove the effect temporarily, but restore Water Breathing immediately because milk removes that effect too.
- Several lasers charge at once. You are exposed to too many sightlines. Move behind a pillar, corner, or placed block and wait for the beams to break before advancing.
- Melee attacks cost too much health. The guardian’s orange spikes are extended. Switch to a bow where space permits, or attack only during a brief opening before retreating behind cover.
- You keep losing track of the monument layout. Mark the entrance, air pocket, and cleared rooms with easy-to-place blocks. A fixed retreat route is more valuable than wandering while underwater.
- Guardians continue appearing after the raid. The monument’s surrounding water still satisfies spawning conditions. Treat the area as a potential renewable guardian site or change the water and spawning conditions appropriate to your edition.
- You drained a room but still struggle to survive. Removing water helps movement and visibility but does not remove guardians. Finish the elder priority, then clear the remaining guardians while using the newly created dry space as cover.
Ocean monument raid checklist
- Strong armor, food, and a dependable melee weapon and/or bow
- Blocks for temporary walls and route markers
- Reliable Water Breathing support
- Optional Protection IV, Mending, Depth Strider, Night Vision, Regeneration, and Invisibility
- An air pocket or retreat route established before entry
- A plan to break guardian laser line of sight
- Top elder targeted when practical, followed by the two wing elders
- Milk reserved for emergencies, with replacement Water Breathing ready
- Player kills secured for the elders’ wet-sponges drops
- Sponges dried before using them to drain rooms
The practical verdict
An ocean monument becomes manageable when you treat it as a cover-and-priority fight. Protect your breathing, break every laser sightline, kill the three elder guardians before attempting emergency mining, and use their preserved sponges to turn dangerous rooms into controlled work areas. Ordinary guardians are then a cleanup problem, while the cleared monument can become a source of gold, prismarine, sea-lantern materials, tide armor trim, and—if you manage the water correctly—a renewable guardian farm.
