To make a golden carrot, place one regular carrot in the center of a crafting grid and surround it with eight gold nuggets. You can also buy three golden carrots for three emeralds from a master-level farmer villager. Golden carrots are valuable because they restore substantial hunger and saturation, brew into Night Vision potions, and support several animal interactions.
What a golden carrot does
A golden carrot is both a high-quality food and a brewing ingredient. Eating it restores 6 hunger points (three food icons) and 14.4 saturation points. That 14.4 saturation value is the highest among stackable foods in the comparison cited by the hunger-management reference, so a player can often travel longer before needing to eat again.

Golden carrots were added in 2012’s Pretty Scary Update. Their distinctive gameplay role is easy to misunderstand: eating one does not grant Night Vision. The carrot is used in a brewing stand with an Awkward Potion to create a Potion of Night Vision.
How to craft a golden carrot
Materials required
- 1 regular carrot
- 8 gold nuggets
- A crafting grid with at least nine spaces, such as a crafting table
The carrot is the center ingredient and the nuggets occupy every surrounding slot. The recipe is shapeless in the sense that the important pattern is the carrot surrounded on all sides, but using the standard centered layout avoids mistakes.

| Top row | Middle row | Bottom row |
|---|---|---|
| Gold nugget | Gold nugget | Gold nugget |
| Gold nugget | Carrot | Gold nugget |
| Gold nugget | Gold nugget | Gold nugget |
- Open a crafting table or another 3×3 crafting interface.
- Put one carrot in the center slot.
- Fill all eight slots around it with gold nuggets.
- Move the resulting golden carrot into your inventory.
If the output does not appear, check that the ingredient in the middle is a normal carrot rather than a different crop and that all eight surrounding slots contain gold nuggets. An empty corner or an item in the wrong slot prevents the recipe from matching.
Getting the first carrot
Carrots are commonly found in village fields and can be multiplied once you obtain a single plantable carrot. Harvest the crop, replant it, and expand the plot rather than consuming the entire first harvest. This creates a renewable supply for both ordinary food and future golden-carrot crafting.

Gold obtained by mining or from an established gold farm must be available as nuggets for this recipe. Convert your gold into nuggets in a crafting interface, then keep a reserve of nuggets near your food and brewing supplies. The recipe consumes eight nuggets per golden carrot, so a small pile of raw gold can disappear quickly when preparing for a long expedition.
Every practical use
High-saturation food
Golden carrots are best when reducing eating interruptions matters more than minimizing ingredient cost. Their saturation lets the hunger bar remain useful for longer after a meal, which is particularly helpful during dangerous exploration, long-distance travel, or work where stopping to eat would expose you to hazards.
They are not automatically the right food for every situation. A player with a large ordinary crop surplus may prefer cheaper farm foods for routine activity and reserve golden carrots for journeys, combat preparation, or trips where inventory space and downtime matter. The decision depends on four practical factors: saturation, ingredient cost, renewability, and whether villager trading is available.
Brewing Potion of Night Vision
A golden carrot is the ingredient that changes an Awkward Potion into a Potion of Night Vision. The basic procedure is:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Place a brewing stand where you can access it and provide the stand’s required fuel.
- Put one or more Awkward Potions in the bottle slots.
- Place a golden carrot in the ingredient slot.
- Wait for the brewing process to finish, then collect the Potion of Night Vision.
The potion is the source of the status effect; the food item itself is not. If you eat a golden carrot expecting the screen to brighten, nothing unusual will happen beyond hunger and saturation restoration. If brewing fails, confirm that the bottles are Awkward Potions rather than water bottles or another finished potion, and make sure the golden carrot is in the ingredient position.
Animal interactions
Golden carrots also work with several passive animals. The available interaction depends on the species:
| Animal | Supported uses |
|---|---|
| Horse | Taming, breeding, growth, and healing |
| Donkey | Taming, breeding, growth, and healing |
| Mule | Taming, breeding, growth, and healing |
| Rabbit | Breeding, leading, and growth |
Use the item on the relevant animal and follow the normal interaction prompts for that species. Because the same carrots are also premium food and potion ingredients, decide whether an animal task is worth consuming your stored supply before breeding or healing.
Ways to obtain golden carrots without crafting
Master-level farmer trading
Mojang’s documented alternative to crafting is a trade with a master-level farmer villager: three emeralds buy three golden carrots. This is a one-for-one exchange in the stated trade, so each emerald effectively corresponds to one golden carrot when the offer is available.
Rank #3
The trade is useful when emeralds are easier to obtain than gold. It also provides a dependable late-game supply once a farmer has reached master level. Keep the villager protected and maintain access to the trading area so the offer can be used whenever it is available.
- Level the farmer through its normal profession trades until it reaches master level.
- Check the master-level offer for the three-emeralds-for-three-carrots exchange.
- Carry enough emeralds for the number of carrots you need and monitor the villager’s stock.
The trade route does not remove the value of a carrot farm: ordinary carrots are still needed for the crafting recipe, and emerald income may be less convenient than a reliable gold supply on some worlds.
Structure chest loot
Golden carrots can also appear in several structure loot tables. The item reference lists the following locations:
| Structure or chest type | What to know |
|---|---|
| Ancient City ice-box chests | Golden carrots are part of the listed loot table; exact quantities and chances depend on edition and game version. |
| Bastion Remnants | Chest loot can contain golden carrots, making bastions a possible source while exploring the Nether. |
| Ruined Portals | Some portal chests include golden carrots in their loot table. |
| Trial Chambers | Golden carrots are listed in the structure’s loot tables, with details that can vary by version and edition. |
Loot percentages are not universal constants. Java and Bedrock editions can use different tables, and updates can change both probabilities and stack sizes. Treat chest finds as a bonus unless you have verified the current table for the edition and version you are playing.
Building a reliable golden-carrot supply
Stage 1: multiply carrots early
- Secure one ordinary carrot, often from a village field or another early-game source.
- Plant it on prepared farmland with the conditions required for crop growth.
- Replant after every harvest and enlarge the plot instead of eating the entire crop.
- Store a portion of the harvest for golden-carrot crafting and another portion for continued replanting.
This stage turns a single early carrot into a renewable ingredient stream. It does not solve the gold requirement, but it prevents carrots from becoming the limiting resource later.

Stage 2: establish gold income
Obtain gold through mining or an established gold farm, then convert it into nuggets as needed. The right choice depends on your world: mining is straightforward when you are still developing infrastructure, while a functioning farm is more suitable for repeated large-scale production. Keep the gold workflow separate from the carrot plot so a shortage in one system is easy to identify.
Stage 3: add villager trading
Once a farmer reaches master level, compare the effort of earning emeralds with the effort of producing nuggets. Trading can become the simplest bulk route in a mature settlement, while crafting remains useful when you already have gold and do not want to manage villager access.

Stage 4: stock for the job
- Long exploration: carry golden carrots when reducing food stops is important.
- Night-time or underground work: reserve some for Night Vision brewing rather than eating the entire stock.
- Animal projects: set aside the amount needed for taming, breeding, growth, or healing before using the remainder as food.
- Routine base work: use less expensive farm foods when maximum saturation is unnecessary.
Are golden carrots worth the cost?
They are worth prioritizing when their high saturation or brewing role solves a specific problem. They are less attractive when gold is scarce and you are performing short, safe tasks near a food farm.
| Decision factor | Golden-carrot position | What that means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Saturation | Very high; 14.4 points per item | Useful when you want fewer eating interruptions during travel or danger. |
| Hunger restoration | 6 points, or three food icons | A single item fills a substantial portion of the hunger bar. |
| Ingredient cost | One carrot plus eight gold nuggets | Gold availability determines how quickly a stockpile can be built. |
| Renewability | Carrots are farmable; gold requires mining or a gold farm | The carrot side is easy to renew, while the gold side needs a dedicated supply plan. |
| Villager access | Three emeralds for three carrots from a master farmer | A developed trading setup can replace some crafting demand. |
| Brewing value | Required for Potion of Night Vision | Keep a brewing reserve even if you normally eat cheaper foods. |
The strongest general strategy is to maintain both options: farm ordinary carrots continuously, then convert only the amount justified by your upcoming activity. Use trading when emeralds are plentiful and a master farmer is convenient; craft when gold is the resource you can obtain most reliably.

Expecting the food to grant Night Vision
Symptom: you eat a golden carrot and your surroundings do not brighten.
Fix: place the golden carrot in a brewing stand with an Awkward Potion. The resulting Potion of Night Vision, not the edible item, provides the effect.

Using the wrong crafting ingredients
Symptom: no golden carrot appears in the output slot.
Fix: verify the center slot contains a regular carrot and all eight surrounding slots contain gold nuggets. Gold ingots and other gold items do not substitute for nuggets in this recipe.
Searching for a trade at the wrong villager level
Symptom: a farmer does not offer golden carrots.
Fix: continue leveling the farmer until it reaches master level, then check the documented three-emerald trade. A lower-level farmer is not the stated source for this offer.
Relying on a loot percentage from another edition
Symptom: a chest contains different items or quantities from a guide you followed.
