Minecraft has three frog variants—temperate (orange), warm (white) and cold (green)—and the biome where a tadpole grows into an adult determines which one you get. To collect all three, breed frogs with slimeballs, wait for frogspawn to hatch, scoop the tadpoles into buckets, and raise separate groups in temperate, warm and cold biomes. Each adult variant produces a different froglight when it eats a very small magma cube: temperate frogs make ochre, cold frogs make verdant and warm frogs make pearlescent.

This guide explains the complete cycle, from finding and breeding frogs to moving tadpoles safely and planning a three-color froglight setup. Exact mechanics can change between future Java and Bedrock releases, so treat version-specific farm behavior as subject to the release you are playing.

The three frog variants at a glance

Frog appearance and froglight color are linked to the temperature category of the biome in which the tadpole matures. The adult frogs that you find in one location are not permanently tied to that location’s biome for breeding purposes. What matters is where the tadpole completes its growth.

Adult variant Frog color Biome temperature for tadpole maturation Froglight produced
Temperate Orange Temperate biome Ochre
Cold Green Cold biome Verdant
Warm White Warm biome Pearlescent

The three variants and three corresponding froglights were introduced by Mojang in 2022. A useful way to remember the system is that the tadpole’s growing-up location chooses the frog, and the frog’s adult variant chooses the froglight.

How the maturation biome controls a frog’s type

A tadpole does not simply inherit the appearance of its parents. The adult form is selected at the moment the tadpole grows up, based on the biome temperature category around it. Mojang gameplay designer Alexander summarized the rule in Meet the Frog: “the place where the tadpole grows into a frog determines the type of frog it becomes.”

Temperate maturation

Keep a tadpole in a temperate biome until it becomes an adult to obtain the orange temperate frog. This is also the frog that produces ochre froglights.

Cold maturation

Move the tadpole to a cold biome before it matures to obtain the green cold frog. Cold frogs are the source of verdant froglights.

Warm maturation

Move the tadpole to a warm biome before it matures to obtain the white warm frog. Warm frogs produce pearlescent froglights.

The biome where you found or bred the parent frogs does not override this rule. If a pair is bred in a swamp and the resulting tadpoles are carried elsewhere, each tadpole can become a different variant according to the destination used for maturation.

Where to find frogs and what tadpoles need

Natural frog locations

Frogs naturally spawn in swamps and mangrove swamps. These locations are convenient starting points because you can find two adults, collect them for a prepared pond, or begin a breeding project near the water where they already live.

Water is essential for the early stage

Frogs lay frogspawn on a water surface after mating. The frogspawn hatches into tadpoles, and tadpoles need water while they are growing. A contained pond is therefore safer than leaving frogspawn in an open, hazardous area. It also makes it easier to identify, scoop and transport every tadpole before it matures in an unintended biome.

Containment checklist

  • Provide a water surface before feeding the frogs so there is a valid place for frogspawn.
  • Use a contained pond or another protected water area to keep frogspawn and tadpoles together.
  • Prevent tadpoles from wandering into a different biome category before you have chosen their destination.
  • Keep buckets available so tadpoles can be removed as soon as they hatch.

How to breed frogs step by step

Breeding requires two adult frogs and slimeballs. The process creates frogspawn rather than producing an adult frog immediately, so plan for a separate tadpole-raising stage.

  1. Find or gather two adult frogs. Search a swamp or mangrove swamp, or bring frogs to a prepared pond. The adults can be kept near your base if the pond has a water surface.
  2. Prepare the breeding area. Make sure the frogs can reach water and that the water surface is contained. Frogspawn is placed on water after mating, so breeding without a suitable surface will not complete the intended cycle.
  3. Feed both frogs slimeballs. Use a slimeball on each frog. After the pair mates, one frog becomes ready to lay frogspawn.
  4. Let the ready frog reach the water. The frog lays frogspawn on the available water surface. Keep the area protected while this happens.
  5. Wait for the frogspawn to hatch. Frogspawn hatches into tadpoles. Do not move the tadpoles into a new temperature category until you are ready to choose their adult form.
  6. Scoop the tadpoles into buckets. Tadpoles can be caught in buckets, allowing you to carry them to a selected maturation biome instead of trying to protect them during a long overland journey.
  7. Release each group in its chosen biome. Use a temperate biome for orange adults, a cold biome for green adults, or a warm biome for white adults. Keep each group in water until it matures.

The critical planning point is that slimeballs start the breeding cycle, but the destination biome finishes the variant selection. Breeding in a swamp is compatible with producing any of the three adult types because the tadpoles can be moved before maturation.

Transporting tadpoles without losing control of the result

Bucket transport separates breeding from maturation. That is useful when your nearest frogs are in a swamp but the biome needed for a particular variant is far away.

Move tadpoles, not an assumed adult result

Once frogspawn has hatched, scoop the tadpoles into buckets and carry them to the target biome. A tadpole that is still in the bucket has not yet committed to a frog variant. Release it only when you are at a suitable water area in the temperature category you want.

Use separate groups for a complete collection

For all three variants, divide the tadpoles into three clearly identified groups. Release one group in a temperate biome, one in a cold biome and one in a warm biome. Labeling or physically separating the ponds prevents an accidental release from sending a group to the wrong temperature category.

Build the destination pond first

Each destination should have water ready before you release the tadpoles. A contained pond reduces the risk that a tadpole leaves the intended area or matures somewhere you did not plan. It also gives you a predictable place to keep the newly grown adults while you prepare froglight production.

Making each froglight color

Froglights are created when a frog eats a very small magma cube. The frog’s adult variant determines the block that drops; the magma cube encounter alone does not let you choose a color.

Adult frog you use Froglight drop Required preparation
Temperate orange frog Ochre froglight Raise the tadpole in a temperate biome, then bring the adult to the small-magma-cube encounter.
Cold green frog Verdant froglight Raise the tadpole in a cold biome, then bring the adult to the small-magma-cube encounter.
Warm white frog Pearlescent froglight Raise the tadpole in a warm biome, then bring the adult to the small-magma-cube encounter.

Why the magma cube must be very small

The documented interaction is specifically a frog eating a very small magma cube. A general magma-cube encounter is not enough to guarantee a froglight, so any production area must arrange the interaction around the smallest form described by the game’s frog mechanic.

Separate variant production from variant maturation

You do not need to create a froglight immediately after a frog grows up. First confirm that the adult has the intended color, then move or guide that frog to the area where it can eat the required magma cube. This separation makes mistakes easier to diagnose: a wrong adult color points to a maturation-biome problem, while a missing froglight points to the magma-cube interaction.

Planning a three-variant and three-froglight project

A reliable collection can be organized as one breeding site, three maturation sites and one froglight-production area. The arrangement below minimizes repeated breeding and keeps the decision that controls each result visible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stage 1: central breeding pond

Start in or near a swamp or mangrove swamp where frogs naturally occur, or bring two frogs to a protected pond. Feed both adults slimeballs and keep the water surface available for frogspawn. This site is only the source of tadpoles; it does not determine the eventual adult color.

Stage 2: three labeled maturation sites

Prepare a water enclosure in each required biome category. Mark them as temperate, cold and warm before transporting any tadpoles. Once frogspawn hatches, divide the tadpoles among buckets and release each group into the matching enclosure.

Stage 3: verify the adults

Check the adult colors before moving on: orange means temperate, green means cold and white means warm. If a group has the wrong color, review the biome category of the pond where it matured; changing the parents or repeating the slimeball step would not correct a tadpole that was raised in the wrong temperature category.

Using froglights in builds

Froglights are decorative light blocks. The Java 1.19 summary recorded a light level of 15 for froglights, as reported by Minecraft Wiki in 2022. That makes them useful when a build needs both colored detail and a strong light source, although the exact behavior and presentation can vary with later game releases or edition-specific updates.

Choose color by frog, not by location

Because the block color is tied to the adult frog, decide on the desired light before you begin the tadpole stage. An ochre design requires an orange temperate frog, verdant requires a green cold frog and pearlescent requires a white warm frog. The biome where you later stage the magma-cube interaction does not change the drop once the frog is already an adult.

Use the variants as a color-coding system

For practical organization, associate each production enclosure with both a frog color and a froglight color: temperate/orange/ochre, cold/green/verdant and warm/white/pearlescent. This three-part label reduces the chance of placing the wrong adult in a production area or storing the wrong block with a build palette.

Troubleshooting common failures

No frogspawn appears after feeding

  • Confirm that both adult frogs were fed slimeballs.
  • Check that a water surface is available for the frog that becomes ready to lay.
  • Keep the frogs in the prepared pond rather than allowing them to wander away from the water.

Frogspawn does not become usable tadpoles

  • Protect the frogspawn in a contained pond and keep water available.
  • Watch the area until hatching occurs so the new tadpoles can be collected promptly.
  • If you intend to select a different adult variant, scoop the tadpoles before they mature in the current biome.

The frog grows into the wrong color

  • Identify the biome category of the exact water area where the tadpole matured.
  • Remember that the parents’ original location does not decide the adult form.
  • For another attempt, breed or collect a fresh tadpole and move it into the correct temperate, cold or warm biome before maturation.

The frog eats a magma cube but the expected color is missing

  • Verify the adult variant first: orange should produce ochre, green should produce verdant and white should produce pearlescent.
  • Confirm that the interaction involves a very small magma cube, as specified by the frog mechanic.
  • If the setup behaves differently after an update, check the release notes for the Java or Bedrock version you are running because mechanics can change.

Edition and version considerations

The core three-variant system, slimeball breeding, tadpole transport and variant-specific froglights were documented by Mojang in 2022. The light-level figure of 15 comes from a Java 1.19 summary published by Minecraft Wiki in 2022. Those dates describe the cited information; they are not a guarantee that every future release will expose identical farm behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When following a detailed farm design, record the edition and version alongside the instructions. A layout that works in one release may need adjustment if spawning, movement or the magma-cube interaction is revised. The invariant planning rule remains the same in the documented system: choose the tadpole’s maturation biome first, then use the resulting adult frog to obtain its associated froglight.

A compact checklist for your next session

  • Locate two frogs in a swamp or mangrove swamp, or prepare a pond for frogs you already have.
  • Keep slimeballs ready and provide a water surface for frogspawn.
  • Protect the frogspawn and collect the tadpoles in buckets after hatching.
  • Release separate groups in temperate, cold and warm biomes to obtain orange, green and white adults.
  • Keep each adult identified while arranging the very small magma-cube encounter.
  • Collect ochre from temperate frogs, verdant from cold frogs and pearlescent from warm frogs.
  • For Java 1.19-based expectations, treat froglights as light-level-15 decorative blocks, while checking later release behavior when necessary.
