Minecraft has three froglight colors: pearlescent, verdant, and ochre. A frog produces a froglight when it eats a small magma cube, and the frog’s variant decides the block you receive. Warm (white) frogs make pearlescent froglights, cold (green) frogs make verdant froglights, and temperate (orange) frogs make ochre froglights.

The reliable survival method is to raise tadpoles in the correct temperature environment, then bring small magma cubes to the resulting frogs. This guide explains how to get every froglight color, how to control frog variants, how to choose between adult frogs and transported tadpoles, and how to use the blocks once you have them.

Every froglight color and the frog that makes it

The color is determined at the moment a frog eats a small magma cube. You cannot select a color from a crafting menu, dye an existing froglight, or change the color after the block drops. Bring the appropriate frog to the magma cubes instead.

Frog variant Appearance Environment where its tadpole grows Froglight produced
Warm White Warm environment Pearlescent
Cold Green Cold environment Verdant
Temperate Orange Temperate environment, including ordinary swamps Ochre

This warm, cold, and temperate mapping is documented in Minecraft’s official frog coverage and the Java Edition 1.19 documentation. Froglights were introduced with the Wild Update in Java Edition 1.19.

How froglights are made in Survival

A frog must eat a small magma cube

Froglights are not mined from a structure and are not crafted from other light blocks. The triggering event is a frog eating a small magma cube. The official “Meet the Frog” article puts the Survival rule plainly: “Even more so though, frogs eating magma is the only way to obtain froglight blocks in Survival.”

That requirement has two separate parts to prepare:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A frog of the variant that matches the color you want.
  • A supply of small magma cubes that the frog can eat.

Once both are available, the frog handles the conversion. A single frog can continue producing blocks when it is supplied with more small magma cubes, so froglights are renewable rather than a one-time structure loot.

The frog’s variant controls the result

The important temperature check happens while the tadpole grows. Moving an adult frog to another climate does not turn it into a different variant. If you need a specific color, control the tadpole’s growth environment before it becomes an adult.

Step-by-step: how to get every froglight color

  1. Choose the color or colors you need. Use the table above to identify whether you need a warm, cold, or temperate frog. If you want all three, plan to raise at least one tadpole in each temperature category.
  2. Obtain frogs or tadpoles. You can find adult frogs or breed frogs to obtain tadpoles. The most controllable route is to move a tadpole in a bucket, because the place where it grows determines its final variant.
  3. Put each tadpole in the intended environment. Carry a tadpole in a bucket to a warm environment for a warm frog, a cold environment for a cold frog, or a temperate environment for a temperate frog. Ordinary swamps count as temperate environments for the orange variant.
  4. Wait for the tadpole to grow. Keep track of which environment was used for each tadpole. Labeling separate pens or using signs prevents you from mixing variants when you return to your base.
  5. Prepare small magma cubes. Collect them manually in the Nether or use a dedicated magma-cube farm if you need a large, repeatable supply. The frog must be able to reach the small cubes for the eating event to occur.
  6. Bring the matching frog and magma cubes together. Use the warm frog for pearlescent, the cold frog for verdant, and the temperate frog for ochre. Give the frog time to eat each small magma cube before moving it or changing the enclosure.
  7. Pick up the drops. Collect the froglight blocks produced by the frog. Repeat the feeding cycle whenever you need more blocks in that color.

For a three-color collection, the cleanest arrangement is three clearly marked frog areas, one for each variant. This avoids accidentally feeding a magma cube to the wrong frog and gives you a permanent production setup for future building projects.

How to get pearlescent froglight

To get pearlescent froglight, raise a tadpole in a warm environment so it becomes a warm, white frog. Then supply that frog with small magma cubes. Every froglight produced by that warm frog is pearlescent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pearlescent setup checklist

  • One warm-environment tadpole or an already-grown warm frog.
  • A safe enclosure for the white frog.
  • Small magma cubes collected manually or from a farm.
  • A collection area where you can see and retrieve the resulting blocks.

If a white frog produces a different color, verify that you are looking at the frog’s actual variant rather than assuming its original location determined the result. The block color follows the frog that performs the eating action.

How to get verdant froglight

To get verdant froglight, grow a tadpole in a cold environment until it becomes a cold, green frog. Feed that frog small magma cubes. The green frog’s output is verdant froglight.

Verdant setup checklist

  • One tadpole grown in a cold environment, or a cold adult frog.
  • A separate enclosure so the green frog is not confused with warm or temperate frogs.
  • A supply of small magma cubes.
  • Storage labeled “verdant” for the resulting blocks.

Transporting the tadpole is usually easier than trying to identify and relocate several adult frogs when your base is not in a cold environment. Put the tadpole in a bucket, carry it to the cold growth area, and let it mature there before returning it to your production area.

How to get ochre froglight

To get ochre froglight, grow a tadpole in a temperate environment. Temperate frogs are orange, and ordinary swamps are included in this category. Feed the resulting temperate frog small magma cubes to produce ochre froglight.

Ochre setup checklist

  • One tadpole grown in a temperate environment, such as an ordinary swamp.
  • A secure pen for the orange frog.
  • Small magma cubes.
  • Storage marked “ochre” so the yellow-orange blocks stay separate from the other colors.

Temperate is often the simplest variant to organize if your project already has access to an ordinary swamp. The decisive step is still the tadpole’s growth environment, not where you later place the adult frog.

Adult frogs versus bucketed tadpoles

Both routes work, but they solve different logistics problems. Finding an adult frog can be faster when the variant you need is already nearby. Bucket transport gives you much more control when you are starting from a mixed group or building a three-color collection at one base.

Route Frog control Biome requirement Best use Main drawback
Find and move an adult frog You must identify the existing variant correctly The required variant must already be available where you can reach it Getting one known color quickly Searching and transporting the right adult can take longer than raising a tadpole
Carry a tadpole in a bucket You choose the final variant by choosing the growth environment You need access to warm, cold, or temperate terrain for each color Making all three colors deliberately Each tadpole must be taken to the correct environment and allowed to mature

For a long-term froglight operation, use bucketed tadpoles for the initial three variants, then keep the grown frogs in labeled pens. That separates the one-time biome trip from the repeatable magma-cube feeding work.

Getting small magma cubes for a froglight setup

The frog only reacts to small magma cubes, so your collection plan must account for cube size. A manual route means traveling to the Nether, locating magma cubes, and bringing suitable cubes to the frog. A dedicated farm is useful when you want a steady supply for large builds or repeated production, but the froglight recipe itself does not require a farm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manual collection

  1. Prepare your Nether travel and return route before moving any frog.
  2. Collect small magma cubes in the Nether.
  3. Transport the cubes to the frog area using the method that keeps the path and enclosure safe.
  4. Feed the cubes to the frog one at a time and collect the resulting blocks.

This approach is appropriate for a small lighting project. It avoids committing to a permanent farm, but each new batch requires another collection trip.

Dedicated farm supply

A farm is the practical choice when you are producing many stacks or want all three colors available on demand. Keep the frog pens and the magma-cube collection system conceptually separate: the farm supplies the input, while the frog variant determines the output color. No published authoritative figure establishes a universal drop rate, farm efficiency, or production rate, so do not plan a build around an assumed percentage or blocks-per-hour number.

Froglight block properties and build utility

Property Practical meaning
Light level 15, the highest standard block-light level
Renewability Renewable because frogs can repeatedly eat small magma cubes
Breaking Can be broken by hand or with any tool
Placement Can be placed in three orientations, similar to logs and basalt
Snow interaction Melts snow layers within three blocks by taxicab distance
Ice interaction Melts ice within four blocks by taxicab distance

Light planning

Every froglight color emits light level 15, so color selection is visual rather than a brightness trade-off. Choose pearlescent, verdant, or ochre to fit the palette of the room, path, farm, or Nether build; changing color does not reduce the light output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Orientation

Froglights support three placement orientations. Treat them as directional decorative blocks rather than assuming every face will align the same way. Test one block in the intended position before placing a large pattern, especially when you are matching logs, basalt, or other blocks with directional grain.

Snow and ice planning

The melting ranges matter around frozen bases and decorative ice builds. Snow layers within three blocks and ice within four blocks can melt, measured by taxicab distance. Leave more separation than the stated range when a frozen feature must remain intact, or use a different light source for that area.

Designing a three-color froglight station

A compact station should make variant identification, magma-cube delivery, and item collection obvious. Build three pens with signs or other permanent labels: pearlescent / warm, verdant / cold, and ochre / temperate.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Recommended layout

  • Place the three pens beside a shared storage area, but keep physical barriers between frogs.
  • Use a separate input chest or barrel for each color so the intended output is clear before feeding begins.
  • Leave enough room to see the frog and the small magma cube during the eating event.
  • Keep cold-sensitive ice and snow decorations outside the four-block ice and three-block snow melting ranges.
  • Store a bucket nearby so a frog can be moved without dismantling the entire station.

This layout does not increase the frog’s output rate; it reduces mistakes. The value is organization: you can see which variant is active, feed the correct pen, and put each color directly into its labeled storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting: when a frog does not produce the color you expect

The block color is wrong

Check the frog’s appearance first. White means warm and pearlescent, green means cold and verdant, and orange means temperate and ochre. If the appearance is not the variant you intended, the tadpole was grown in the wrong temperature environment or the wrong frog was moved into the pen.

The frog will not produce a froglight

  • Confirm that the input is a small magma cube.
  • Make sure the frog can reach the cube rather than being separated by a barrier.
  • Allow the frog time to perform the eating action before moving it.
  • Check that you are working with a frog, not a tadpole; the color decision is made by the grown frog.

You cannot get all three colors from one frog

One frog variant produces its corresponding color. A warm frog does not switch to verdant or ochre because it is moved to another biome. Raise separate tadpoles in the required environments and maintain one adult frog for each color.

Ice or snow melted near the lighting

Measure the distance using taxicab distance rather than only looking at a straight diagonal. Move the froglight beyond four blocks from ice and beyond three blocks from snow layers, or relocate the frozen decoration.

Version context and what the documentation establishes

Froglights were added in Minecraft Java Edition 1.19, the Wild Update. The Java 1.19 documentation identifies pearlescent, verdant, and ochre as the three variants and connects them to warm, cold, and temperate frogs. The official frog article explains the tadpole-transport method and the requirement for frogs to eat magma in Survival.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are playing a different edition or a version substantially different from Java 1.19, confirm the behavior against that edition’s current notes before building a large automated system. The color mapping and block properties described here are the documented Java mechanics.

Quick reference checklist

  • Pearlescent: grow a tadpole in a warm environment; use the resulting white frog.
  • Verdant: grow a tadpole in a cold environment; use the resulting green frog.
  • Ochre: grow a tadpole in a temperate environment, including an ordinary swamp; use the resulting orange frog.
  • Supply small magma cubes to the matching frog.
  • Collect the renewable froglight blocks it produces.
  • Remember that all three colors emit light level 15, support three orientations, and can melt nearby snow and ice.
