Minecraft has four fish mob categories: cod, salmon, pufferfish and tropical fish. A fishing rod can pull any of them from the loot pool, while a water bucket lets you capture a living fish and move it to an aquarium or another body of water. Cod and salmon are the practical food catches, tropical fish are primarily collectibles and utility items, and pufferfish is a brewing and trading ingredient that is dangerous to eat.
The four fish categories in Minecraft
Fish appear in two useful forms: as living mobs in water and as items obtained from fishing or other collection methods. The distinction matters. A rod gives you an item, but using a water bucket directly on a fish preserves it as a live specimen that can be released elsewhere.

The best fish depends on your goal. Choose cod or salmon when you need food, tropical fish when you are building a collection or aquarium, and pufferfish when you need a specific utility ingredient.
How to catch fish with a fishing rod
Fishing is the simplest way to obtain fish as items. The rod’s loot pool can contain raw cod, raw salmon, pufferfish, tropical fish, junk and treasure, so every cast is not guaranteed to produce a fish.

Basic fishing procedure
- Equip a fishing rod and stand where the bobber can land in water.
- Cast the rod into the water.
- Watch the bobber for a bite. Reel in when the bite occurs rather than pulling immediately after casting.
- Collect the resulting item and cast again if you are seeking a particular fish.
This method gives you fish as inventory items. It does not create a live mob for an aquarium. To transport a living specimen, use the bucket method below instead.
What each rod catch means
- Raw cod and raw salmon: ordinary food catches.
- Pufferfish: a useful brewing and trading item, but a hazardous food.
- Tropical fish: a collection and utility item that cannot be cooked.
- Junk: a non-fish result from the same loot pool.
- Treasure: a rarer non-fish result from the same pool.
If you are fishing for one specific fish, plan for mixed results. The cited material establishes the available categories, not a fixed percentage for each catch, so there is no reliable quota of casts that guarantees cod, salmon, pufferfish or tropical fish.

A water bucket is the key tool for aquariums and long-distance transport. The bucket stores the fish itself rather than merely carrying water, so the mob can be released in a different location.
Capture a fish
- Fill an empty bucket from a water source to make a water bucket.
- Use the water bucket directly on the living cod, salmon, pufferfish or tropical fish.
- Confirm that the bucket now contains the fish. The fish is no longer swimming freely at the original spot.
Release the fish
- Travel to the destination aquarium, river section or other prepared water area.
- Use the fish-filled bucket on the water space where you want the mob to appear.
- Check that the destination has enough water for the fish to swim before adding more specimens.
This capture-and-release cycle is safer than trying to push a fish through terrain or transport it over land. Keep the filled bucket in your inventory until the enclosure is ready; emptying it early releases the fish at that location.

Cod: the dependable food and display fish
Cod is one of the four standard fish mob categories and a normal fishing catch. Its most useful role is straightforward food, but a live cod also works as an aquarium inhabitant when captured with a water bucket.
When cod is the right choice
- Use rod fishing when you want a repeatable source of cod items while also accepting salmon, pufferfish, tropical fish, junk or treasure.
- Use a bucket when your goal is a living fish for a tank, pond or themed build.
- Keep the live-capture and food approaches separate: a fish caught with a rod is an item, while a fish captured with a bucket remains a mob for later release.
The cited references do not establish a single biome rule for cod in every edition. Avoid assuming that a location that produces one fish category will always produce cod; use the rod when you need the item and search visible fish when you need a live specimen.
Salmon: river fish and rod catch
Salmon is another standard fish mob and a fishing-rod catch. The cited reference specifically identifies salmon as the fish found in rivers. Because spawning tables can change between Java and Bedrock editions and across updates, treat that river description as edition-qualified rather than as a universal rule for every version.
Useful salmon routes
- River search: look for living salmon where the applicable edition’s river spawning rules place them, then capture one with a water bucket.
- Rod fishing: cast for raw salmon while accepting the rest of the fishing loot pool.
- Aquarium build: move a live salmon in a fish bucket and release it into a prepared water enclosure.
For a project that must work on both Java and Bedrock, test the intended river location in the specific edition and version you play instead of copying a spawning assumption from another edition.

Tropical fish: habitats, variants and best uses
Tropical fish are the collection-focused fish category. The official Minecraft tropical-fish article dated June 27, 2025 says they appear in large groups in warm and lukewarm oceans and in lush caves, and in mangrove swamps in Java Edition. A water bucket preserves a live tropical fish for transport, making it the practical way to populate a remote aquarium.
Why tropical fish are worth collecting
- Visual variety: tropical fish represent many color and pattern combinations, so a tank can be organized by appearance rather than by species name alone.
- Trading: the official article identifies tropical fish as a trade item for fisherman villagers.
- Wolf care: raw tropical fish can heal wolves for two health points.
- Display builds: bucket transport lets you bring specimens from warm or lukewarm habitats to a base aquarium.
Tropical fish cannot be cooked
Tropical fish are not a cooking ingredient. The cited official article says a raw tropical fish restores one hunger point and provides 0.2 saturation. That makes it a weak emergency food compared with using it for collection, trading or wolf healing. Do not put tropical fish in a furnace expecting a cooked result.

Warm and lukewarm oceans are the broad habitat described for tropical fish, and lush caves are also named. Mangrove-swamp spawning is explicitly identified for Java Edition. If you play Bedrock Edition, do not automatically apply the mangrove statement; check the behavior of your specific release and use warm or lukewarm ocean and lush-cave locations as the documented starting points.
Pufferfish: a utility item, not good food
Pufferfish has a very different role from cod, salmon and tropical fish. The official pufferfish article dated October 14, 2020 describes fishing as the easy acquisition route, finding live pufferfish in warm or lukewarm oceans as a harder route, and guardian hunting as the hardest route.

Best ways to obtain pufferfish
- Fish with a rod: this is the easiest route described in the official article and also gives you a chance at other fish, junk and treasure.
- Capture a live ocean pufferfish: search warm or lukewarm oceans, approach carefully and use a water bucket directly on the fish.
- Hunt guardians: the article identifies this as the hardest acquisition route; it is an advanced option rather than the sensible starting method for most players.
What pufferfish is used for
- Water-breathing potions: pufferfish is a brewing ingredient for water-breathing utility.
- Fisherman trading: the official article lists trading pufferfish with a fisherman villager.
- Cats and ocelots: it can be used for wrangling or taming cats and ocelots, as described by the official article.
- Live display: a bucket can move a living pufferfish to an aquarium, provided the enclosure is ready.
Why eating pufferfish is a mistake
Eating pufferfish applies hunger, nausea and poison at the same time. The combination makes it a poor food choice even when your hunger bar is low. Store pufferfish for brewing, trading or animal interaction instead of consuming it; a live pufferfish can also be moved with a bucket if you want it as part of a dangerous-themed aquarium.
Building an aquarium with fish buckets
You do not need a special aquarium block. Any secure water enclosure can display fish, but preparation prevents escapes and accidental loss.
Prepare the enclosure
- Build walls and a base that hold water in the desired shape.
- Fill the enclosure completely enough for the fish to swim rather than leaving isolated dry gaps.
- Finish the glass, lighting and decoration before adding valuable or rare specimens.
- Keep a spare water bucket nearby in case you need to refill a section during construction.
Populate the tank
- Capture each chosen fish with a water bucket at its source location.
- Carry the filled buckets to the completed aquarium.
- Use each fish-filled bucket inside the enclosure to release the matching live fish.
- Observe the tank after release and repair any opening before adding another specimen.
Tropical fish are especially suited to display tanks because their colors and patterns differ. Cod, salmon and pufferfish provide recognizable contrast, while mixed tanks let you demonstrate all four fish categories. If a design requires a specific tropical appearance, collect several live fish and choose the specimens that fit the build before dismantling the source habitat.

Two official Minecraft articles give different totals for tropical-fish variants. The tropical-fish article published June 27, 2025 says there are “3,072 different types of tropical fish.” The pufferfish article published October 14, 2020 says “3,584 different kinds of tropical fish.” These figures should not be merged into one timeless number.

The safest way to report the difference is to attach each number to its article date and wording. The totals may reflect changes in documentation, editions or counting conventions. For a current collection project, treat the appearance combinations you can actually find in your edition and version as the practical authority rather than assuming either dated figure is universal.

Fishing and aquarium troubleshooting
The rod keeps returning junk
Junk is part of the documented fishing loot pool, as are treasure and all four fish categories. Continued junk does not mean the rod is broken. Keep casting if you need a fish item, or switch to locating a living fish and using a bucket if your actual goal is an aquarium.
The fish disappeared when I tried to move it
Check that you used a water bucket directly on the living fish. A normal empty-hand interaction does not create a fish bucket. Capture first, verify that the bucket contains the fish, and only then travel to the destination.
The aquarium will not hold the fish
Inspect the enclosure for openings and dry gaps before releasing another specimen. Fill the intended swimming area with water, repair leaks and release the fish from inside the completed structure. Keeping a spare bucket lets you correct a damaged section without returning to the original habitat.
I cannot find tropical fish in my usual ocean
Start with a warm or lukewarm ocean, or search a lush cave. If you are relying on a mangrove swamp, remember that the cited official description specifies Java Edition. Edition and version differences can change which spawning table applies.
I ate a pufferfish and feel sick
The negative effects are expected: pufferfish applies hunger, nausea and poison when eaten. Avoid using additional pufferfish as food. Reserve future catches for water-breathing potions, fisherman trading, cat or ocelot interaction, or a bucket-based display.
A practical collection plan
- Decide whether you need items or live mobs. Choose a rod for food, brewing or trading items; choose a bucket for an aquarium.
- Secure the destination first. Build and fill the aquarium before transporting fish.
- Collect common utility fish early. Fish for cod, salmon and pufferfish while accepting the mixed loot pool.
- Target tropical fish separately. Search warm or lukewarm oceans and lush caves, and apply the Java-only mangrove note when relevant.
- Label specimens by purpose. Keep pufferfish away from food storage, reserve tropical fish for trading or wolf healing, and retain visually distinctive tropical fish for display.
- Record your edition and version. This is especially important for salmon river behavior, tropical-fish habitats and the dated variant totals.
With that separation between rod catches and live bucket captures, Minecraft’s fish system becomes predictable: cod and salmon cover ordinary food needs, tropical fish reward exploration and collecting, and pufferfish supplies specialized utility while demanding careful handling.
