To make a basic Minecraft firework rocket, combine one paper with one, two or three gunpowder in the crafting interface. Each craft produces three rockets, and the gunpowder count sets flight duration 1, 2 or 3. A rocket without a firework star has no explosion, making it the usual choice for Elytra travel.
For colored explosions, craft a firework star from gunpowder and dye, optionally add a shape ingredient, diamond for a trail, or glowstone dust for twinkle, then include the star when making the rocket. Explosive rockets can also be loaded into crossbows, but they damage targets only when they contain an explosion effect.

How to craft basic firework rockets
Gather the ingredients
- Paper: one sheet per rocket craft.
- Gunpowder: one, two or three pieces per craft, depending on the desired flight duration.
The paper and gunpowder recipe makes three rockets at a time. Gunpowder is therefore both a duration setting and a material cost: using three gunpowder gives the longest documented duration, but it does not increase the number of rockets produced by the craft.

Craft the rockets
- Open the crafting interface.
- Place one paper and between one and three gunpowder in the recipe input.
- Take the output of three rockets.
- Repeat the craft with the same gunpowder count when you need a larger batch.
A rocket made this way is starless. It launches and provides propulsion, but it does not create an explosion effect. That distinction matters for both Elytra safety and crossbow damage.
Understanding flight duration
Flight duration is selected by the number of gunpowder pieces in the recipe:

How firework stars create color and shape
A firework star is the component that gives a rocket a visible explosion. Craft the star separately, then place it in the rocket recipe with paper and the desired amount of gunpowder. Without a star, changing dyes or shape ingredients is impossible because there is no explosion component to modify.
Make a colored star
- Open the crafting interface.
- Combine gunpowder with one or more dyes.
- Collect the resulting firework star.
Dyes determine the explosion colors. Using more than one dye allows a star to carry multiple explosion colors; the exact visual blend depends on the colors selected and the game’s rendering.

Select the explosion shape
Add one shape ingredient while crafting the star. Leaving out a shape ingredient produces the small-ball form.

The head option creates the Creeper-face form. The evidence does not specify a particular head type or whether every head variant produces the same result, so use the head available in your edition and test it if the face is important to a display.
Add a trail or twinkle
- Diamond: adds a trail to the explosion.
- Glowstone dust: adds the twinkle effect.
These are visual modifiers, not replacements for dye or shape ingredients. A star can combine color choices with a shape and either of these effects when the recipe accepts the selected ingredients.
Add fading colors
- Craft the initial firework star with its gunpowder, dye and optional shape or effect ingredients.
- Combine that existing star with one or more additional dyes.
- Use the resulting star in a rocket recipe.
The additional dyes set fade colors, so the explosion changes as it dissipates rather than remaining a single color throughout. Fade colors are added to an existing star; they are not selected by putting dyes directly into a finished rocket.
Assemble a custom firework rocket
Once a star is ready, combine it with paper and one to three gunpowder. The gunpowder still controls flight duration, while the star supplies the explosion’s color, shape and optional visual effects.

- Add one, two or three gunpowder for duration 1, 2 or 3.
- Add the completed firework star.
- Take the three rockets from the output.
Use the star only when you actually want an explosion. The same rocket that looks good in a display can be hazardous during an Elytra glide, and an unstarred rocket will not provide explosive crossbow damage.

The table describes ingredient choices rather than a guarantee about how large or bright an effect appears in every edition, graphics setting or viewing distance.
Choose the right rocket for its job
Block launches and fireworks displays
Use a firework rocket on a block to launch it vertically. This is the straightforward option for a manually triggered display: prepare rockets with the stars and duration you want, then use each rocket on its launch block.
For a redstone show, place rockets in dispensers. A dispenser launches a rocket in the direction it faces, allowing the launch angle to be built into the layout. Align dispensers before wiring them, because their facing direction determines where the rocket travels. Starred rockets create the visible effect; starless rockets only provide a launch without an explosion.

Use starless rockets while gliding with an Elytra. The rocket pushes the player in the direction the player is facing, and a longer flight duration supplies a longer boost. Duration 1, 2 and 3 therefore become a practical choice between shorter, more frequent boosts and longer boosts that consume more gunpowder per craft.

Do not use a star-equipped rocket as a routine Elytra booster. When that rocket explodes, its firework effect can hurt the player. Keep a separate inventory stack of starless rockets for travel so display ammunition cannot be selected accidentally during a glide.
Crossbow ammunition
Firework rockets can be loaded into crossbows. A crossbow rocket deals damage only when it contains an explosion effect, so a starless rocket is not suitable for damaging targets. Add a firework star to create the required explosion.
More stars add damage, according to the documented mechanics. Multishot can fire three rockets with the same effects, making the selected star configuration apply to all three projectiles in that shot. The supplied information does not give a damage number, range, or durability cost, so treat the exact combat result as edition- and situation-dependent rather than assuming a fixed value.

Planning materials and rocket counts
Every rocket craft returns three rockets, regardless of whether the recipe uses one, two or three gunpowder. That makes batch planning simple:
- One craft uses one paper and produces three rockets.
- Two crafts use two paper and produce six rockets.
- Three crafts use three paper and produce nine rockets.
For duration 3, each craft consumes three gunpowder. Three duration-3 crafts therefore require three paper and nine gunpowder and return nine rockets. For duration 1, the same nine-rocket quantity requires three paper and three gunpowder. These totals follow directly from the documented recipe and do not include materials for stars.

Starred rockets require additional gunpowder for the stars themselves, plus dyes and any selected shape or effect ingredients. Keep those inputs separate when estimating supplies: gunpowder used in a star creates the explosion component, while gunpowder placed in the rocket controls duration.

“My rocket launches but does not explode.”
Check whether a firework star was included. Paper plus gunpowder alone creates a starless rocket, which intentionally has no explosion effect. Craft a star with gunpowder and dye, then include that star when making a new rocket.
“My Elytra rocket hurts me.”
The rocket probably contains a firework star. Explosive stars can damage the player when they explode during flight. Switch to a starless rocket stack for Elytra travel and reserve starred rockets for displays or crossbow ammunition.
“My crossbow rocket does not deal damage.”
Crossbow rockets need an explosion effect to deal damage. Inspect the ammunition and use a rocket made with at least one firework star. A starless rocket can still be a valid rocket item, but it is not the damaging crossbow variant described here.
“The rocket lasts for the wrong amount of time.”
Count the gunpowder pieces in the rocket recipe. One gives duration 1, two gives duration 2 and three gives duration 3. Remember that gunpowder added while making the firework star is separate from the gunpowder added while making the rocket; only the latter sets the rocket’s flight-duration setting.
“The display looks different from the design.”
Verify the star’s ingredients. Dyes control color, the shape ingredient selects the form, diamond adds a trail, glowstone dust adds twinkle and additional dyes added to an existing star create fade colors. Also check the launch direction: a dispenser sends the rocket in the direction it faces, while using a rocket on a block produces a vertical launch.
Edition and version considerations
The documented recipes describe general Minecraft behavior, but the available evidence does not specify a Java Edition or Bedrock Edition target, a precise release number or server modifications. Before publishing a build guide for a particular platform, verify the recipes and projectile behavior in that edition and release. Custom servers, mods and data packs can change crafting inputs, flight behavior, damage or available ingredients.
For an unmodified game, the core decisions remain consistent: use paper and one to three gunpowder for three rockets, add a star only for an explosion, select colors with dyes, choose a shape ingredient when desired, add diamond or glowstone dust for visual modifiers, and keep starless rockets for routine Elytra boosts.
