An endermite can appear when a player-thrown ender pearl lands: each landing has a 5% chance of producing one. That is an independent chance, not a guarantee after 20 throws. If the endermite is unwanted, either kill its eight-health body or move at least 16 blocks away and wait roughly two minutes for normal despawning. If you are building an enderman farm, contain the creature and name it before leaving it in place, because endermen attack endermites and a named endermite avoids the ordinary timed-despawn rule.

  • Spawn chance: 5% per landed player-thrown pearl.
  • Bedrock reference stats: 8 health, 2 attack damage and a 16-block nearest-target radius.
  • Farm role: a contained endermite acts as a lure for endermen.

What an endermite is

Endermites are tiny hostile arthropods created by a specific ender-pearl event. They are not a normal result of exploring, mining or waiting for hostile mobs to spawn. The trigger is a player throwing an ender pearl and that pearl landing successfully.

The commonly documented gameplay rule gives every qualifying landing a 5% endermite roll. Microsoft’s Bedrock entity definition records the implementation values below. Because that Microsoft page describes a vanilla Bedrock behavior-pack definition, treat its numerical combat and reward fields as Bedrock-specific unless you have confirmed the same behavior in the Java Edition and version you are playing.

Property Value How to interpret it
Maximum health 8 health points The creature has a small health pool and can be defeated with ordinary melee attacks.
Attack damage 2 This value is recorded in Microsoft’s Bedrock entity definition.
Nearest attackable-target radius 16 blocks The Bedrock definition uses this radius for selecting a nearby attackable target; it is not a promise that every edition exposes identical behavior.
Experience reward 3 points Bedrock’s definition awards this when the last hit is by a player.
Item drops None listed The mob-farm reference lists no item drops, so killing one should not be treated as a source of a collectible item.

Despite its size, an endermite is hostile. It can therefore become an immediate nuisance in a cramped build, while the same hostility relationship makes it useful in an enderman farm.

How to spawn an endermite

The procedure is short, but preparation matters if you intend to keep the mob rather than remove it.

  1. Collect ender pearls. Bring enough pearls for multiple attempts. A single pearl can work, but the probability is deliberately low enough that several attempts are normal.
  2. Choose a controlled landing area. Throw where you can see the landing point and reach the resulting mob safely. If you are making a farm, finish the holding area before you start throwing.
  3. Throw the pearl yourself. The documented trigger is a player-thrown ender pearl. Wait for the pearl to land rather than assuming that merely selecting or holding it creates a roll.
  4. Check the landing location. On each qualifying landing, the game makes the 5% endermite check. Look around the point where the pearl arrived.
  5. Repeat as needed. A failed roll is not evidence that the mechanic is broken, and a successful roll is not owed after a particular number of failures. Continue with additional pearls while keeping the area under control.
  6. Secure a farm endermite immediately. If the purpose is an enderman farm, move the spawned creature into the prepared containment and minecart or equivalent holding arrangement, then apply a name tag if the design requires it to remain indefinitely.

There is no fixed “twentieth throw” event. The 5% figure applies independently to each landed pearl, so the only way to increase your practical chance is to make more qualifying attempts.

What the 5% chance means in practice

Probability is easiest to understand as the chance of seeing at least one endermite after several independent throws. The calculation is 1 - 0.95n, where n is the number of landed player throws. These are planning estimates, not guarantees.

Landed pearls Chance of at least one endermite What that means
1 5.0% Most single attempts fail.
10 About 40.1% Ten attempts still leave failure more likely than success.
20 About 64.2% Twenty attempts make a spawn more likely, but roughly one-third of such sets still produce none.
40 About 87.1% Forty attempts are strong odds, not certainty.
60 About 95.4% Most sets succeed, while a small unlucky fraction still does not.

These percentages assume every listed attempt is a qualifying landing and that the rolls are independent. They do not establish a pity counter, a streak breaker or a guarantee tied to a particular world, location or number of throws.

How to get rid of an unwanted endermite

Pick the response that matches whether you need the area immediately or can simply leave the creature alone.

Kill it with ordinary attacks

An endermite has only 8 health in the documented entity data, so normal melee attacks are the direct solution. Keep your crosshair on the small target, make sure you are not standing in a dangerous drop or open hostile-mob area, and continue attacking until it is defeated. A player’s final hit produces the Bedrock experience reward recorded in the entity definition; no item drop is listed by the mob-farm reference.

Leave the area and wait for despawn

If combat is inconvenient, move at least 16 blocks away from the endermite and wait roughly two minutes. That distance lets the normal timed-despawn window operate. This is the simplest no-combat method for a creature you do not need.

Do not expect this timer to remove a named endermite. Name-tagging changes its persistence behavior, which is why naming is useful for farms and counterproductive when your goal is automatic cleanup.

Contain it temporarily

If you are undecided, put the endermite somewhere it cannot interfere with your route or accidentally draw endermen into an unprotected space. A closed holding arrangement gives you time to decide whether to kill it, let it despawn, or convert it into a farm lure. Check the enclosure before walking away; the endermite’s value depends on keeping the hostile mob separated from players and other parts of the build.

Why enderman farms use an endermite

Endermen are hostile toward endermites. A farm can exploit that relationship by placing a contained endermite where nearby endermen can detect and pursue it. The endermen are then directed toward the farm’s collection or kill chamber, where the builder handles the final processing.

The endermite is therefore a lure, not the source of the farm’s drops. Its job is to create the hostile-target behavior that brings endermen into the planned path.

Prepare the holding system first

Build and test the containment before attempting the spawn. The cited mechanics support using a minecart or an equivalent holding arrangement, but they do not define one universal farm schematic. Your exact enclosure, transport route and kill chamber depend on the edition, version, terrain and design you chose.

  • Leave a safe place from which to throw the pearl and observe the landing.
  • Have the holding route ready so the creature is not loose while you improvise.
  • Keep the endermite separated from player walkways and unplanned mob areas.
  • Use a name tag when the design requires long-term retention.
  • Verify that the lure is still contained before activating the rest of the farm.

Name the lure before relying on it

A name-tagged endermite does not follow the ordinary timed-despawn rule described in the reference. That makes naming the appropriate preservation step for a permanent or semi-permanent farm lure. Apply the name tag after the creature is safely under control, rather than chasing an unnamed endermite through an unfinished build.

Understand the danger of an open lure

The same enderman aggression that makes the design work can make an unfinished farm dangerous. An uncontained endermite may draw endermen toward places where you did not intend to fight or collect them. Keep the lure in its planned position and do not treat the farm as complete until the enclosure, transport and kill area all work together.

Troubleshooting common problems

“I threw many pearls and saw no endermite.”

First confirm that each attempt was a player throw and that the pearl actually landed. Then count attempts using the probability table rather than expecting a fixed threshold. Even twenty landed pearls do not guarantee a result, and an unlucky run can continue beyond the average experience players expect.

“The endermite disappeared while I was building.”

An unnamed endermite remains subject to the normal timed-despawn behavior. If you needed to preserve it, the recovery is to create another qualifying spawn and name it once it is safely contained. If you did not need it, disappearance may simply be the expected result of leaving the area far enough away for the despawn window to complete.

“I moved away, but it is still there.”

Check the distance from the endermite rather than from your original throw point. The practical escape instruction is at least 16 blocks away from the mob, followed by roughly the normal two-minute wait. A named creature is an exception to the ordinary timed rule.

“The farm attracts endermen unpredictably.”

Inspect the lure’s containment and position before changing the rest of the farm. The established relationship is that endermen attack endermites; the cited material does not provide a universal schematic or promise identical pathing in every edition and version. Confirm your design against the edition-specific behavior of the world you are playing.

“I expected an item drop.”

No item drops are listed for the endermite in the mob-farm reference. In Bedrock’s cited definition, a player’s final hit awards 3 experience points. Treat the mob as a farm-control mechanism or hostile target, not as an item-producing resource.

Edition and version considerations

The 5% spawn rule and the endermite’s use as an enderman lure are presented in general Minecraft gameplay references. The numerical health, attack, target-radius and experience fields cited here come from Microsoft’s 2023 vanilla Bedrock entity definition. The available evidence does not establish a complete Java-versus-Bedrock equivalence table.

Before committing resources to a permanent farm, check the exact edition and version running on your world. Pay particular attention to whether the entity’s persistence, targeting and transport behave as your plan assumes. If a tutorial was written for another edition, use its layout as a starting concept rather than proof that every block placement or behavior will transfer unchanged.

Quick decision checklist

If you do not want the endermite

  • Attack it directly, using its small health pool to finish the encounter quickly.
  • Or move at least 16 blocks away and allow about two minutes for normal despawning.
  • Do not name it if automatic timed despawn is the desired outcome.

If you are creating an enderman farm

  • Prepare the containment and minecart or equivalent holding arrangement before throwing pearls.
  • Make several attempts possible; each landed player throw has only a 5% spawn chance.
  • Secure the creature immediately after it appears.
  • Name it when long-term retention is required.
  • Keep the lure enclosed and verify the enderman path into the intended kill chamber.
  • Validate behavior on the exact edition and version in use.

The practical rule is simple: spawn one with a landed player-thrown pearl, control it quickly, and decide whether persistence or despawn is your goal before applying a name tag.
