Endermen are the most dependable renewable source of Ender Pearls. You can also obtain pearls from expert cleric villagers, barter for them with adult piglins, or find them in certain structure chests. To use one, hold it and press the use button; the pearl flies to its impact point and teleports you there, but the teleport can inflict damage and a bad landing can kill you.
Ender Pearls also combine with Blaze Powder to make Eyes of Ender, which locate a stronghold and activate the End portal. An Ender Pearl is a throwable item. Mojang’s instruction is simple: hold the pearl in your hand and press the use button. The projectile travels to the point where it hits, then teleports the player who threw it to that location. The teleport is immediate, so the destination matters as much as the aim.
Pearls are stackable to 16, making a single inventory slot useful for short-distance movement or emergency recovery. They are not harmless movement items: the teleport can damage you, and landing in lava, the void, a suffocating space, or an otherwise dangerous area can turn a successful throw into a death.

The second major role is progression. Combine an Ender Pearl with Blaze Powder to craft an Eye of Ender. Eyes guide you toward a stronghold and are used to activate the End portal, so pearl collection is part of the normal route to the End rather than merely a convenience for travel.
How to get Ender Pearls
Kill Endermen
Endermen are the main renewable source. The Minecraft Wiki’s 2026 item reference lists a 50% base chance of one pearl per Enderman. A Looting enchantment improves the possible yield: each Looting level adds one pearl to the maximum, with Looting III allowing up to four pearls from a single Enderman. The listed chance and maximum are drop-table values; your actual haul will vary from kill to kill.
Endermen become hostile when you look directly at them. A practical fighting method is to stand under a covered space only two blocks high. You can attack the Enderman while its taller body cannot reach you. This shelter is a risk-reduction tactic, not a guarantee: watch for nearby mobs, keep the roof intact, and avoid opening the shelter to the sky while fighting.
- Carry a weapon and food before starting a hunt.
- Use a two-block-high roof or other low clearance so the Enderman cannot enter.
- Do not stare at an Enderman while positioning yourself.
- With Looting, expect better potential yield, not a guaranteed pearl from every kill.
Because Endermen can continue to appear as you play, this method does not consume emeralds or gold and remains useful in long-term worlds. It is the best fit when you want a renewable supply and are prepared to manage combat risk.
Trade with a cleric villager
Clerics provide a non-combat route, but the offer depends on edition and on reaching the highest profession tier. The cited trade table reports that an expert Java cleric has a two-thirds chance to offer one Ender Pearl for five emeralds. In Bedrock, an expert cleric sells one pearl for five emeralds according to that table.

These are edition- and version-sensitive trade values. If a Java cleric does not show the pearl trade, level another cleric or check the rules for the release you are playing; do not assume every expert cleric has the offer. Trading is comparatively safe once you have an emerald supply, but it requires a developed village economy and enough time to level the villager.
Barter with adult piglins
In the Nether, give gold ingots to adult piglins. The cited barter table lists a 4.27% chance of receiving three to four Ender Pearls from a barter. That is a chance per completed barter, not a promise that a fixed number of gold ingots will produce pearls.
Wear at least one piece of gold armor before approaching ordinary piglins. Microsoft’s documentation explains that piglins barter with players wearing gold, and the gold piece helps prevent normal piglins from becoming hostile simply because you are nearby. You still need to handle the Nether’s environmental dangers and any piglin behavior triggered by opening containers or mining gold.
- Bring gold ingots, not gold nuggets or tools, for the barter.
- Equip one gold armor piece before entering a piglin trading area.
- Use a protected trading space so hostile mobs and lava do not interrupt the exchange.
- Expect several barters when you need a reliable quantity; the 4.27% result is uncommon.
Search structure chests
Ender Pearls can appear in chests in strongholds and trial chambers. The cited item reference also lists a trapped chest in a woodland-mansion fake-end-portal room as a possible source. Chest generation is chance-based, and the available evidence does not establish a single percentage that applies across all of these structures and editions, so treat chest loot as a bonus rather than a guaranteed supply.
Chest hunting is most attractive when exploration is already part of your objective. It can save combat or trading time, but it is not a dependable replacement for an Enderman supply because you may find no pearls in a particular structure.

Which acquisition method fits your situation?
No single route is best for every world. Choose according to your progression stage, available currency, and tolerance for danger.

For a repeatable supply, Endermen are the clearest long-term choice. A Java player who has emeralds may prefer to level several clerics because the trade can be safe and predictable once available. Piglin bartering is a useful Nether-side alternative when gold is plentiful, while chest loot is opportunistic.
How to throw an Ender Pearl safely
The use button is the same action you use for other throwable items; its exact key or controller button depends on your controls. Follow this sequence whenever the landing spot matters.
- Inspect the destination. Identify a solid, reachable surface. Confirm that it is not lava, the void, a wall that could suffocate you, or a drop that leaves you surrounded by enemies.
- Clear your line of sight. Remove foliage, glass, temporary blocks, or mobs that could make the trajectory unpredictable. In a tight room, create enough space for the pearl to reach the intended face.
- Keep an emergency pearl. Do not throw your last pearl for routine travel. A spare can recover you from a knockback or fall if a safe landing point is visible.
- Aim at the impact face. Aim for the top or side of a solid block rather than an edge. The teleport destination is determined by where the projectile lands.
- Throw once and reassess. There is a short use cooldown. Wait for the item to be ready before attempting another throw, and check your health immediately after teleporting.
- Stabilize after arrival. Move away from edges, extinguish fire, block hostile mobs, and verify that you are not trapped inside a block or in a hazardous pocket.
Situations to avoid
- The void: There is no recovery surface below you. A pearl aimed at an uncertain edge can end a run instantly.
- Lava: Even if the pearl reaches a ledge, fire and lava damage may leave you unable to escape.
- Unknown caves: A small opening can hide a drop, hostile mobs, or a one-block space that traps you.
- Blind throws: Throwing around a corner or through an opening you cannot see trades a known position for an unknown one.
- Low health: The teleport itself can hurt you. Heal before using a pearl as a routine movement tool.
Using pearls in the End
Ender Pearls are especially valuable in the End, where open voids and tall obsidian towers make ordinary movement risky. The Ender Dragon tutorial recommends pearls for reaching tower tops and for emergency recovery after knockback or a fall. Aim for a visible tower surface or a solid island block, not the void between islands.
On a tower, use a pearl to reach a top platform only when you can identify the landing face. A miss can send you over the edge, and a successful teleport can still leave you exposed to the dragon, crystals, or Endermen. Keep blocks, food, and another pearl available so the teleport is one part of a recovery plan rather than your only option.

Crafting Eyes of Ender and reaching the End
Craft the eye
Combine one Ender Pearl with Blaze Powder to make an Eye of Ender. The pearl supplies the teleportation-related component; Blaze Powder supplies the Nether resource. Keep the two materials in separate stacks until you are ready to craft so you do not accidentally spend pearls needed for travel.
Locate a stronghold
Use an Eye of Ender to begin the stronghold search. The eye provides directional guidance toward the underground stronghold, where the End portal room is located. Because eyes can be consumed or fail during use, bring more than the minimum you think you will need and carry spare pearls for movement separately.

The End portal frame requires Eyes of Ender in its frame sockets. Fill the empty sockets to activate the portal, then enter only after checking your equipment, food, blocks, and escape plan. Do not convert every pearl immediately if you still need pearls for emergency teleports or if you have not finished gathering supplies.

Trade availability is the most important everyday distinction: the cited table gives Java expert clerics a two-thirds chance of offering one pearl for five emeralds, while the Bedrock entry reports the expert sale as one pearl for five emeralds. Confirm the trade in your own world because villager offers and loot tables are version-sensitive.
Technical behavior can also change between releases. Mojang’s Java snapshot 24w37a notes that thrown pearls load and tick chunks and continue across dimensions in that snapshot. That is a snapshot-specific behavior, not a promise that every released Java or Bedrock version handles pearls identically. Do not design a farm, transport system, or cross-dimensional mechanism around that note without checking the documentation for your exact release.

Troubleshooting common pearl problems
“My Enderman did not drop a pearl.”
A 50% base chance means many kills produce nothing. Continue hunting, or use Looting to increase the possible yield. The absence of a pearl from one kill is normal and does not indicate a broken world.

The cited Java value is a two-thirds chance for the expert offer, not a guarantee. Level another cleric, verify that the villager is truly expert, and check the trade rules for your release. Bedrock’s listed expert sale is different.
“Piglins attack while I am trying to barter.”
Check that an adult piglin can see a piece of gold armor equipped on you. A gold item in your inventory is not the same as wearing gold armor. Also avoid actions that provoke piglins, and build a protected exchange area away from lava and other mobs.
“The pearl landed, but I died.”
The impact may have been in lava, the void, a suffocating block space, or another lethal location, or the teleport damage may have finished a low-health player. Aim only at a visible solid surface, heal before throwing, and keep a spare pearl for recovery rather than using the last one for speed.
“The pearl seems to do nothing immediately.”
There is a short use cooldown. Wait briefly, confirm that the projectile reached a valid impact point, and try again from a clear position. If you are testing unusual behavior such as chunk loading or cross-dimensional travel, compare it with the rules for your exact game version; snapshot behavior is not universal.
A practical progression plan
- Start with available Endermen. Collect an initial supply while using a two-block shelter to reduce direct-eye-contact risk.
- Improve the drop potential. If you have access to Looting, use it for future hunts; the cited table allows up to four pearls with Looting III.
- Add a trading route. Level clerics if emeralds are easier for you to obtain than safe Enderman kills, remembering the Java/Bedrock offer difference.
- Use Nether gold when appropriate. Barter with adult piglins in a protected area and wear gold armor, but plan for the 4.27% pearl-result chance.
- Reserve pearls for both travel and Eyes. Craft Eyes of Ender from pearls and Blaze Powder only after setting aside the pearls you want for emergency movement.
- Prepare for the End. Bring visible-landing discipline, spare pearls, food, blocks, and equipment before using pearls around towers or the void.
This approach keeps Ender Pearls useful at every stage: renewable combat drops for the long term, villager or piglin exchanges when their inputs are abundant, and structure loot when exploration happens to provide it.
