Minecraft’s enchanting table combines a straightforward crafting recipe with randomized choices: build the table, arrange active bookshelves around it, provide lapis lazuli and experience, then select one of three offers. The mysterious words on those offers are written in the Standard Galactic Alphabet (SGA), but they are flavor text rather than clues to the enchantment you will receive.

What an enchanting table does

An enchanting table lets you apply enchantments to eligible items by spending experience and lapis lazuli. After you place an accepted item in the table, the interface presents three possible offers. Each offer has its own level requirement and lapis cost, and the final result is selected through Minecraft’s enchantment rules and randomization.

The visible glyphs do not function as a spellbook, a list of guaranteed outcomes or a prediction system. They are a visual alphabet used for the interface. To make a decision, read the ordinary level and lapis information, consider the item and the enchantment category shown, and treat the runic words as decoration.

Materials and crafting recipe

The recipe requires exactly:

  • One book
  • Two diamonds
  • Four obsidian blocks

Arrange those materials in the crafting interface to produce one enchanting table. The recipe is the same whether you plan to build a compact setup or a larger room; the difference is the space you leave around the finished table for bookshelves.

How to build the standard level-30 setup

The standard maximum setup uses 15 active bookshelves. Place the shelves around the table with exactly one block of air separating the shelf blocks from the table. In that arrangement, the table can offer the maximum standard level-30 range.

Construction checklist

  1. Craft the table from one book, two diamonds and four obsidian.
  2. Choose a room or platform with enough space to put shelves around the table.
  3. Keep one full air block between every bookshelf position and the table.
  4. Place 15 bookshelves in the surrounding arrangement.
  5. Leave the table and shelf faces unobstructed so the shelves remain active for the setup.

Fifteen shelves are sufficient for the standard cap. Adding more does not raise the normal table beyond level 30, so extra shelves are a design choice rather than a way to unlock a higher level.

Planning the room

A square or rectangular room makes the one-block air gap easy to maintain, but the important requirement is the relationship between the table and the shelf blocks, not a particular decorative shape. Before placing the shelves, walk around the proposed table position and check that each shelf will have the required air separation. This avoids building a visually impressive ring that does not count as the intended active arrangement.

You can put the table in a dedicated enchanting room or in a larger base. The setup does not need a special floor material or a special ceiling. Its functional requirements are the table, the eligible item, the lapis supply, available experience and the correctly positioned active shelves.

Lighting detail

An enchanting table emits light level 7. That is not part of the enchantment calculation, but it can be useful when planning a room because the table contributes a small amount of illumination rather than behaving like an entirely dark block.

Enchanting an item step by step

  1. Place the completed enchanting table where you can access it and where the bookshelf arrangement remains active.
  2. Open the table interface.
  3. Insert an item that the table accepts for enchanting.
  4. Add the required lapis lazuli to the lapis slot.
  5. Confirm that you have enough experience for the offer you want to use.
  6. Inspect all three choices. Compare their displayed level requirement, lapis cost, the item being processed and the enchantment category offered.
  7. Select the offer that best fits your goal and meets both the level and lapis requirements.

The basic workflow can consume between one and three lapis lazuli, depending on the choice displayed. The interface shows the cost for each offer, so check the selected slot rather than assuming every enchantment uses the same amount.

What the three offers represent

Factor What to check Why it matters
Player level requirement The level displayed beside the offer You must meet that requirement to select the offer.
Lapis cost The lapis amount shown for the offer The basic workflow uses one to three lapis lazuli, depending on the choice.
Item The item currently in the table Enchantability rules depend on the item being enchanted.
Enchantment category The category or headline visible in the interface It identifies the type of result being offered, while additional enchantments remain subject to random selection.
Additional enchantments Any extra effects indicated by the offer The randomized set can add effects according to the item and enchantment rules.

The three slots use different level calculations. A displayed level is therefore an input to the randomized selection, not a promise that the chosen item will receive one particular enchantment or a fixed combination.

Why the result is not fully predictable

Several inputs influence the result at once: the item, the enchantment rules that apply to it, the level calculation for the selected slot and Minecraft’s randomization. Because those inputs interact, two offers with similar-looking level requirements can produce different outcomes, and the same kind of item can receive a different set of options at another visit to the table.

What the displayed level does mean

The level shown beside an offer tells you the experience requirement for that choice. It is useful for deciding whether you can afford the offer and for comparing the three slots. It should not be read as the name of the enchantment, a guaranteed strength value or a deterministic code for the result.

Why changing the item changes the offers

Enchantability rules are tied to the item in the table. When you replace the item, the table recalculates which enchantment categories can apply and which randomized combinations are possible. That is why a setup that is physically unchanged can present a different selection after you insert another eligible item.

Why extra shelves do not solve randomness

Bookshelves raise the available standard level range up to level 30, but they do not turn the table into a deterministic selector. Once the 15-shelf arrangement reaches that cap, adding more shelves cannot force a particular enchantment or reveal the hidden result behind a glyph string.

What language does the enchanting table use?

The symbols are the Standard Galactic Alphabet, usually abbreviated SGA. SGA is a substitution-style alphabet: its glyphs correspond to Latin letters. In Minecraft, it is used as a written interface style rather than as a spoken language, an independent gameplay language or a cipher that stores the actual enchantment outcome.

Where the Standard Galactic Alphabet came from

American game designer Tom Hall created the original Standard Galactic Alphabet for the Commander Keen series. Minecraft later adopted the script for its enchanting-table presentation. The early history of Minecraft’s enchantment screen records the SGA presentation in October 2011.

Can you translate the glyphs?

Yes. Because SGA maps glyphs to Latin letters, a player can identify the letter represented by each symbol and read the resulting words. This is a genuine alphabet mapping, not a language barrier that requires learning Minecraft grammar.

Translation has a strict limit, however: the words shown on the buttons are randomized flavor text. Converting the symbols to Latin letters does not disclose the enchantment that will be applied, the strength of that enchantment or the hidden additional effects. The useful information remains the normal offer data in the interface and the item’s enchantment rules.

Why a translated word is not a spell name

The runes can look like technical labels because they appear next to the three selectable offers. Their role is visual identity. A translated phrase should not be treated as a key that points to a specific enchantment, and comparing one SGA string with another cannot tell you which result is better. Compare the level requirement, lapis cost, item and visible enchantment category instead.

How to compare the three choices efficiently

Use a consistent order so the decorative text does not distract from the information that actually affects the decision.

  1. Check eligibility and level. Make sure the item is accepted and that your current experience level meets the selected offer’s requirement.
  2. Check lapis. Confirm the displayed lapis cost and keep enough lapis for the choice you intend to take.
  3. Read the category. Decide whether the visible enchantment category serves the item’s intended use.
  4. Account for additional effects. If the interface indicates additional enchantments, include that randomized possibility in your decision.
  5. Ignore the SGA phrase. Do not rank offers by the translated or untranslated glyph words.

This method works whether you are trying to maximize a level-30 offer or simply choosing an affordable lower-level option. The table’s presentation can change, but the decision factors remain the same.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

The table never shows the expected level range

First inspect the bookshelf layout. The standard arrangement requires 15 active shelves and exactly one air block between the shelf blocks and the table. A shelf placed directly against the table, or a layout that does not preserve the required separation, will not provide the intended setup. Remove and reposition shelves until the one-block air gap is consistent.

Adding more than 15 shelves changes nothing

That behavior is expected. The standard table caps at level 30, so shelves beyond the 15 needed for the cap do not unlock a higher normal offer. Keep additional shelves only for decoration or room design.

The runes appear to promise one enchantment, but another is applied

The symbols are SGA flavor text, not outcome data. Check the offer’s ordinary level and lapis information and remember that the result is randomized according to the item and enchantment rules. Translating the glyphs will not make the selection deterministic.

You can see an offer but cannot select it

Check both resources shown by the table: your player level and lapis lazuli. An offer can be visible while still being unavailable because one of those requirements is not met. The displayed values are the authoritative checks for that slot.

The choices changed after replacing the item

That is a normal consequence of item-specific enchantability rules and randomized selection. Evaluate the new offers on their own terms instead of expecting the table to preserve the previous list.

A practical room-and-use example

Suppose you are creating a small enchanting room in a base. Start by reserving the table’s position, then mark a one-block air channel around the positions where the shelves will stand. Place the 15 shelves while preserving that gap. After the room is built, open the table with an eligible item and lapis available. The three offers may have different level requirements and costs; choose by the item’s purpose and the category shown, not by the appearance of the SGA strings.

If you later expand the room with decorative shelves, do not assume the additional blocks improve the table. The functional target has already been reached at the standard 15-shelf, level-30 arrangement. Expansion can improve the room’s appearance or storage plan without changing the table’s normal cap.

Bottom line

Craft the table with one book, two diamonds and four obsidian, build the 15-shelf arrangement with a one-block air gap, and use the table’s displayed level, lapis cost and enchantment category to choose among the three offers. The Standard Galactic Alphabet makes the interface look mysterious, but its translatable words are randomized decoration—not a code for the enchantment you will receive.
