Feed a dolphin raw cod or raw salmon and it can lead you toward the nearest buried treasure, shipwreck or ocean ruin. The same exploration can produce a Heart of the Sea, the item required to craft a Conduit. Dolphins spawn in oceans that are not frozen, but attacking one can make its entire pod hostile, so approach and feed them carefully.
This guide explains where to find dolphins, which fish to use, what to do when a dolphin stops, how treasure hunting works, why the chest matters, and which Java and Bedrock details are confirmed or still version-sensitive.

A fed dolphin changes from a passive ocean animal into a navigation aid. When you give it raw cod or raw salmon, it swims toward a nearby structure that can contain loot: a buried treasure location, a shipwreck or an ocean ruin. The destination is not necessarily visible from the surface, so the useful signal is the dolphin’s movement rather than an immediate chest in front of you.
Feeding also increases the dolphin’s trust. The amount you feed affects how much that trust changes, so a single interaction may not produce the result you expect. If the animal stops before taking you to a structure, feed it again and continue following it.

Dolphin guidance is one of the two methods described in Minecraft’s official “Taking Inventory” article for finding buried treasure. The other method is to use a buried treasure map obtained from a shipwreck or ocean ruin and travel to its red X. A dolphin is therefore an alternative when you do not have a map, or a way to turn an ocean encounter into a treasure search.
What you need before searching
Raw fish
Bring raw cod or raw salmon. These are the feeding items identified by the Minecraft Wiki and the official explanation of dolphin treasure hunting. Some fan guides also list tropical fish and pufferfish, but that broader list conflicts with the cod-and-salmon guidance. For a dependable, version-conscious procedure, use raw cod or raw salmon first.

An unfrozen ocean
Dolphins spawn in any ocean that is not frozen. Frozen ocean and deep frozen ocean are the explicit exceptions in the Minecraft Wiki’s dolphin entry. The broad rule is more reliable than memorizing a short list of named biomes, because fan guides disagree about whether only particular warm or lukewarm oceans qualify.
If you are searching from a coastline, travel until the biome is clearly an ocean rather than assuming every cold-looking body of water has the same spawn rules. If no dolphins appear, move to another non-frozen ocean before concluding that the feature is unavailable.

A current game version
Dolphin behavior has changed as the feature and related treasure items were introduced. Dolphins arrived with the 2018 Update Aquatic. Java Edition 1.13 added fish-leading behavior and Dolphin’s Grace, while Bedrock Edition 1.4.0 introduced the Heart of the Sea; at first, that item had no use until a Conduit recipe was planned. Menus, achievements and behavior can therefore differ by edition or later release. Verify details in the version you are playing.
How to find dolphins
1. Search the right biome
- Enter an ocean that is not frozen.
- Scan open water for dolphins before entering a frozen ocean or deep frozen ocean, where the dolphin spawn rule does not apply.
- If the area is empty, continue through the same non-frozen ocean or travel to another one. A missing pod in one location does not prove that dolphins are disabled in your world.
The evidence supports the non-frozen-ocean rule, not a guaranteed pod size or a fixed spawn count. Reports that pods always contain a particular number of dolphins, or that only a short list of warm biomes works, should be treated as guide-specific claims rather than universal rules.
2. Approach without attacking
Keep the raw cod or raw salmon selected and interact with the dolphin to feed it. Do not strike it to make it move. An attack that does not kill the dolphin in one blow triggers a pod-wide counterattack, and dolphins that become hostile remain hostile even if you feed them afterward. The safest approach is to treat the entire pod as protected wildlife: enter the water with your fish ready, interact, and avoid accidental attacks from combat controls.
3. Let the dolphin begin its path
After feeding, watch which direction the dolphin chooses and follow it through the water. The target may be a buried treasure location, a shipwreck or an ocean ruin. You are following a structure-finding behavior, not ordering the dolphin to a particular chest type, so the first destination may not be the buried treasure you wanted.
How to feed a dolphin correctly
- Place raw cod or raw salmon in an accessible hotbar slot.
- Move close enough to the dolphin to use the normal interact action for your edition.
- Use the interact action while holding the fish. Confirm that the item was consumed or that the feeding interaction occurred.
- Watch the dolphin’s direction and follow it instead of swimming away to search independently.
- If it stops without taking you to a shipwreck, ocean ruin or buried treasure area, feed it again and resume following.
There is no need to convert the fish into another item for this process. The feeding guidance identifies raw cod and raw salmon, not cooked fish. Because community guides disagree about tropical fish and pufferfish, those alternatives are poor choices when you want the most defensible procedure across versions.

Feeding is also a trust interaction. The amount fed affects how much the dolphin’s trust changes, which explains why repeated feeding can be necessary. Do not interpret one pause as proof that the mechanic failed; give the dolphin another raw cod or raw salmon and observe whether it resumes leading you.
Where the dolphin can lead you

The dolphin’s behavior does not promise that every trip ends at a buried chest. Shipwrecks and ocean ruins are valid targets, and they are useful because a map from one of them provides the second official route to buried treasure. If you reach a structure that is intact, inspect it rather than assuming the dolphin chose the wrong place.
When the dolphin stops
Use the recovery procedure from the achievement guidance: feed the dolphin again until it leads you to an ocean ruin or shipwreck. In practical terms, stop swimming ahead, give it another raw cod or raw salmon, and wait for a new direction. Repeating the interaction is preferable to attacking, pushing or trying to force the animal toward a landmark.
Keep track of whether you have actually reached a structure. A dolphin may lead you to an underwater ruin or shipwreck first; that is still a successful target even if your ultimate goal is a buried treasure chest. Obtain a map there or continue the treasure search using the structure as your reference point.

Breaking a buried treasure chest changes what the dolphin seeks next. The Minecraft Wiki’s achievement guidance says that, after a chest is broken, the dolphin looks for a new structure with an intact chest. If you want to use the same dolphin for another search, leave the animal alive, keep feeding it raw cod or raw salmon, and follow its next lead rather than expecting it to return to the already-open location.

Why buried treasure is worth the effort
The Heart of the Sea
Every buried treasure chest contains a Heart of the Sea. The Heart of the Sea page on the Minecraft Wiki states that buried treasures are its only source and that the item cannot be crafted or traded. This makes dolphin-led treasure hunting materially different from ordinary exploration: the chest is the route to an item that cannot be obtained through a recipe or villager trade.
Crafting a Conduit
The Heart of the Sea is used to craft a Conduit. If your objective is a Conduit, a buried treasure chest is not optional loot; it is the required supply route for the central ingredient. Plan the expedition around finding a chest rather than stopping merely because the dolphin reaches a shipwreck or ruin.
Two treasure-finding routes

These routes can complement each other. A dolphin may lead to the shipwreck or ocean ruin that supplies the map, while a map can finish the search when the dolphin’s next target is not a buried chest.

The most important combat rule is simple: do not attack dolphins. If you hit one without killing it in a single blow, the entire pod counterattacks. Feeding the animals afterward does not immediately undo that hostility. This creates a preventable failure state during an otherwise peaceful treasure expedition.
- Put your weapon away or select the fish before approaching the pod.
- Use the normal interaction control deliberately; do not swing while trying to feed.
- Do not test the mechanic by striking one dolphin. The penalty applies to the pod, not just the individual you hit.
- If a pod is already hostile, feeding is not a reliable reset. Leave the area and look for another non-frozen ocean rather than repeatedly entering the attack range.
The evidence does not establish a special recovery timer or a guaranteed way to pacify a hostile pod. Treat prevention as the dependable solution.

Edition differences should not change the core, well-supported workflow: locate dolphins in a non-frozen ocean, use raw cod or raw salmon, follow the animal, feed again if it stops, and avoid attacks. Treat achievement names and other interface details as version-sensitive.
Troubleshooting a failed treasure search
No dolphins appear
- Confirm that the biome is an ocean and not frozen ocean or deep frozen ocean.
- Move through the non-frozen ocean instead of waiting at one exact block.
- Search another non-frozen ocean if the first area remains empty.
- Check your edition and game version before relying on a guide that lists only particular warm biomes.
The dolphin does not lead anywhere
- Verify that you used raw cod or raw salmon rather than a cooked fish or an item from an unconfirmed fan list.
- Feed it again; the documented guidance specifically recommends another feeding when it stops.
- Follow the new direction closely and allow the target to be a shipwreck or ocean ruin, not only buried treasure.
- Make sure you did not attack the dolphin. A hostile pod will not become friendly merely because you offer food.
You reach a structure but not a buried chest
A shipwreck or ocean ruin is a valid result. Search the structure for a buried treasure map, then use the map’s red X as the separate, official treasure route. The dolphin is not documented as guaranteeing a chest on every lead.
You already broke the chest
The dolphin’s next search target changes after a buried chest is broken: it looks for a new structure with an intact chest. Feed it again and follow the next lead if you want another destination.
A practical expedition checklist
- Carry multiple pieces of raw cod or raw salmon.
- Enter a non-frozen ocean; frozen ocean and deep frozen ocean are exceptions to the dolphin spawn rule.
- Select the fish before approaching a pod.
- Feed without attacking, then observe the dolphin’s direction.
- Follow it to a buried treasure location, shipwreck or ocean ruin.
- If it stops, feed it again rather than striking or pushing it.
- At a shipwreck or ocean ruin, look for a buried treasure map if a chest is not the immediate result.
- Open the buried chest to obtain its Heart of the Sea; remember that this item cannot be crafted or traded.
- If you break the chest and want another search, feed the dolphin again so it can seek a new structure with an intact chest.
What is confirmed—and what remains uncertain
The dependable facts are narrow but sufficient: dolphins spawn in non-frozen oceans; raw cod and raw salmon are the documented feeding items; feeding can lead to buried treasure, shipwrecks or ocean ruins; feeding changes trust; every buried treasure chest contains a Heart of the Sea; and an improperly attacked dolphin can make its pod hostile.
Two frequently repeated details should not be treated as universal rules. First, some fan guides add tropical fish and pufferfish to the feeding list, while the Minecraft Wiki and other guidance identify cod and salmon. Second, fan guides disagree about exact ocean-biome lists and pod sizes, whereas the broader non-frozen-ocean rule is the clearest documented statement. Finally, the Bedrock Echolocation achievement is reported in search-result listings but was not confirmed in the underlying page, and no Java equivalent was established. Check your current edition and version for those details.
