A Minecraft desert temple is a sandstone pyramid hiding four loot chests beneath its patterned floor—and a nine-block TNT trap directly below the center. Find one in a desert, enter from the side, remove the pressure plate before touching the chests, and brush any suspicious sand in a cellar instead of breaking it. Java and Bedrock use different locate commands and have edition- and version-dependent generation and loot.
What a desert temple is
Desert temples, also called desert pyramids, are generated structures in Minecraft’s desert biome. Their sandstone pyramid profile, orange terracotta accents and blue-terracotta floor pattern are the main clues. A temple can stand fully above the sand, be partly buried, or be almost hidden except for a few sandstone blocks and the upper pyramid.
The visible building is only the entrance. Beneath the patterned central floor is a shaft leading to a treasure chamber with four chests. A stone pressure plate sits at the bottom of the shaft above a 3×3 layer of nine TNT blocks. Falling directly onto the plate can kill an unprepared player and destroy the chests, their contents and the structure around them.
Mojang’s official description says: “These temples have a hidden room below the center of the floor with four chests inside.”

How to find a desert temple
Search desert biomes on foot
Start in a broad desert and scan the horizon from high ground. The pyramid is easiest to identify when its four sloping sides and terracotta decoration are exposed. Check around dunes, cliffs and the edges of nearby biomes: the structure may be partially covered by ordinary sand, leaving only a corner, tower or strip of sandstone visible.
- Look for regular sandstone blocks in a landscape otherwise made of sand and sandstone.
- Look for orange terracotta stripes and a blue-terracotta motif near the center of the roof or floor.
- Circle suspicious mounds rather than digging straight down; the buried portion may extend farther than the visible section.
- Mark coordinates when you find one, especially if you are exploring far from your base.
Desert temples generate naturally only in desert biomes. They do not appear in every desert, and the chance of encountering one differs between Java and Bedrock and between game versions.
Use the locate command with cheats
If cheats are enabled, the command is the fastest way to get coordinates. The structure name is not the same in both editions:

Run the command in chat, then travel to the returned coordinates using the displayed position or a teleport command if your world permits it. Commands require cheats or equivalent operator permissions. If the game reports that no structure was found, move to another region, confirm the edition-specific syntax, and check that the world has not been generated with unusual structure settings.

Recognizing the entrance and the treasure room
The patterned floor
Inside the pyramid, the central floor uses sandstone and terracotta in a symmetrical pattern. The blue-terracotta center marks the shaft. Treat it as a warning, not as a safe doorway: mining or falling through the middle can put you directly above the trigger.
The four-chest chamber
The treasure room is below the center. Four chests sit around the bottom of the shaft, with the pressure plate between them. The room may be filled or partly blocked by sand if the temple generated into a dune. Clear blocks from a side position so that you never land on the plate.

Recent desert-temple generation can add a cellar or basement containing suspicious sand. This archaeological area is separate from the classic four-chest room and may be hidden under or beside the main structure. Suspicious sand looks similar to ordinary sand but contains a concealed archaeology reward that can be lost if the block is handled incorrectly.
What to bring before entering
You can raid a temple with basic equipment, but a few items make the approach safer and the archaeology section possible:

- Pickaxe: for controlled mining through sandstone, terracotta and the pressure plate.
- Brush: required to extract items from suspicious sand in a cellar.
- Blocks: useful for making a side staircase, blocking a fall and sealing exposed TNT.
- Torches or another light source: the chamber can be dark, and lighting helps you see the plate and chests.
- Food and armor: protect against the fall, hostile mobs and accidental explosion damage.
- Empty inventory space: four chests can contain many separate stacks, and archaeology items add more.
Do not place redstone components or activate the pressure plate while preparing the room. The safest plan is to create an alternate route before entering the shaft.
Safe desert-temple route: step by step
- Locate the center without dropping into it. Identify the blue-terracotta pattern from the upper floor and stand on ordinary blocks around it.
- Choose a side entry. Break a block orthogonally or diagonally adjacent to the central shaft, or mine down through an outer wall and approach the chamber horizontally. Do not break the center block and fall straight down.
- Descend while staying off the middle. Build or mine a small staircase so your feet reach the chamber floor beside the plate. Keep the cross-shaped area around the plate intact until you can see it.
- Remove the stone pressure plate first. Mine it from a position that does not require stepping on it. Once it is gone, the trigger cannot activate the buried TNT through normal contact.
- Expose and control the TNT. The nine TNT blocks form a 3×3 layer directly under the plate. You can leave them in place after removing the plate, or mine them carefully and collect the TNT if you want the resource.
- Open the four chests. With the plate removed, check each chest and take the contents. If sand has filled part of the chamber, remove it from the side rather than causing a fall onto the center.
- Inspect for a cellar. Search below and around the structure for a basement opening or suspicious sand. Treat that area as an archaeology site, not as another mining vein.
The same side-entry principle works whether the temple is exposed or buried. Mining an adjacent block gives you control over where you stand; dropping through the decorative center gives the trap control over the encounter.

How the TNT trap works—and how to avoid it
Trigger mechanics
The central stone pressure plate is wired to a 3×3 layer of nine TNT blocks. A player, mob or dropped item that activates the plate ignites the TNT. The explosion can kill a player, collapse the chamber and destroy the four chests before the loot can be collected.
Common mistakes
- Breaking the blue-terracotta center and falling directly onto the plate.
- Jumping into the shaft before lighting the chamber or identifying the floor.
- Opening a chest first and stepping onto the plate while moving around it.
- Breaking sand above the chamber so that the player or falling blocks land in the center.
- Assuming that a visible TNT block is harmless while the pressure plate remains active.
If the TNT has already ignited
Move away from the shaft immediately and place blocks between yourself and the chamber if there is time. Once the explosion begins, the chests and their contents may be unrecoverable. A world backup or a copy of the save is the only reliable way to restore destroyed loot; ordinary blocks and armor cannot undo an explosion.

Desert-temple loot
What can appear in the four chests
Chest contents are randomized. Documented categories include diamonds, emeralds, gold, iron, enchanted books, gunpowder and other supplies. Depending on the edition and target game version, a chest may also contain equipment such as horse armor or a saddle. The exact entries and weights are not universal: updates have changed the loot table, including the addition of the Dune Armor Trim and later changes affecting saddles and leather.

Can you find diamonds?
Yes. Diamonds are a documented possible category in desert-temple chest loot, but finding them is not guaranteed. Each chest rolls randomized contents, and the number of chests you successfully open does not turn a rare result into a certainty. If diamonds matter to your expedition, treat them as a bonus rather than a predictable source.

Identify suspicious sand
Suspicious sand can look nearly identical to ordinary sand. In a cellar, clear surrounding normal sand slowly and watch for blocks that belong to the archaeology section. Do not use the usual mining approach on a suspicious block.
Brush instead of breaking
- Clear ordinary sand around the suspicious block without making it fall.
- Equip a brush and use it on the suspicious sand.
- Continue brushing until the hidden item is revealed.
- Support the block and surrounding sand so the suspicious block does not drop.
- Collect the revealed item, then move to the next suspicious block.
Breaking suspicious sand, or allowing it to fall, destroys its archaeology reward. A brush is therefore essential for preserving the cellar’s contents.

Current structured loot data lists eight equally weighted outcomes. Each listed outcome has a 12.5% chance:

Those probabilities describe the listed cellar outcomes, not the four main chests. Chest loot uses its own randomized table and can differ by edition and release.
Java versus Bedrock: practical differences

Because generation algorithms and loot tables change, include the edition and version when documenting a find or comparing results. A tutorial written for one release may show different saddle, leather, armor-trim or suspicious-sand results in another.
Troubleshooting and edge cases
The temple appears to have no chests
Check below the patterned center and around the outer walls. Sand can fill the shaft, and a buried temple can hide an entire side of the chamber. Dig from an adjacent block rather than the center, then look for the four-chest arrangement around the pressure plate.
The locate command fails
- Confirm that cheats are enabled or that you have the required permissions.
- Use
desert_pyramidin Java andtemplein Bedrock; swapping the identifiers causes syntax or no-result errors. - Check spelling, including the underscore in Java’s structure name.
- Try again in a different area if the command reports no nearby structure.
The cellar reward disappeared
If suspicious sand was mined, broken by gravity or allowed to drop, its hidden reward is lost. The correct recovery is to return to an earlier backup or seed copy; brushing a replacement block cannot recreate the missing item.

Place blocks to make a staircase or pillar out, and avoid jumping across the pressure-plate area. If the plate is still present, mine it from the side before widening the exit.
Quick safety checklist
- Find the temple in a desert or use the edition-correct locate command.
- Mark the blue-terracotta center, but do not fall through it.
- Enter from an orthogonally or diagonally adjacent block.
- Reach the bottom beside the plate.
- Mine the pressure plate before opening any chest.
- Leave or safely harvest the nine TNT blocks.
- Open all four chests after the trigger is gone.
- Use a brush on suspicious sand; never break or drop it.
- Record the edition and version when comparing loot or generation.
Bottom line: the safest way to raid a desert temple
A desert temple is valuable because it combines four randomized loot chests with a possible archaeology cellar, but its center is deliberately dangerous. Find the pyramid, bypass the decorative middle, remove the pressure plate from the side, then open the chests. Treat the cellar as a separate brush-only operation, and use the Java or Bedrock command and loot expectations that match your installed version.
