To collect living coral in Minecraft, find a coral reef in a warm ocean and mine it with a Silk Touch tool. Without Silk Touch, breaking coral leaves a gray dead form; after collection, keep coral in water if you want it to stay alive. Minecraft has five coral colors—blue, pink, purple, red, and yellow—with decorative coral, solid coral blocks, and coral fans in each color.
What coral is in Minecraft
Coral is a decorative block family found in ocean reefs. Its main variations are color, shape, and condition: coral can be living and vibrant or dead and gray. The three shapes serve different building purposes: a decorative coral piece, a full solid coral block, and a flat coral fan that sits on a surface.
Living coral is not just a color choice. It can die if placed out of water, so where and how you place it matters as much as how you collect it. Dead coral remains a separate gray-looking form rather than a living piece that can be brought back to life.
Coral types and colors
Minecraft has five named coral types. The names correspond to their characteristic colors, and each type has the same three basic shapes.

| Coral type | Color | Forms |
|---|---|---|
| Tube | Blue | Decorative coral, coral block, coral fan |
| Brain | Pink | Decorative coral, coral block, coral fan |
| Bubble | Purple | Decorative coral, coral block, coral fan |
| Fire | Red | Decorative coral, coral block, coral fan |
| Horn | Yellow | Decorative coral, coral block, coral fan |
How the three shapes differ
- Decorative coral: A small, non-solid piece used as an accent. It is not the same as a full coral block.
- Coral block: A solid cube suited to walls, floors, and larger reef-like builds.
- Coral fan: A flat, leafy piece placed on a surface. Its placement and nearby water determine whether it stays alive.
Each color also has a dead form. Dead coral is gray, so a piece that loses its vivid color may have died rather than changed into a different coral type.
Where to find living coral
Living coral generates in coral reefs in warm ocean biomes. It does not naturally generate in lukewarm, cold, frozen, or deep ocean biomes. If you are searching in one of those other ocean types, continuing to explore the same biome is unlikely to help; look for a warm ocean instead.

Look for bright turquoise water, a sandy seabed, and low clumps of reef on the ocean floor. These visual cues can help distinguish a warm ocean from neighboring ocean areas, but the reef itself is the key sign that you have reached a place with living coral.

Finding the reef efficiently
- Travel along coastlines or across open water while watching for bright turquoise ocean water.
- Check the seabed for sand and low reef formations.
- Once you find a reef, look across its coral formations for the color and shape you want.
- If there is no living coral, check whether you are in a different ocean biome or a deeper ocean area before continuing the search.
Warm water by itself is not a guarantee that every nearby section contains a reef. Living coral is associated with the reef, so search the seabed rather than relying on water color alone.
How to collect living coral with Silk Touch
Coral breaks instantly by hand, but a quick break does not mean it will drop as a collectible. To obtain living coral, mine it with a tool enchanted with Silk Touch. Without Silk Touch, breaking coral leaves a gray dead coral block instead of the living piece you were trying to collect.
- Bring a Silk Touch-enchanted tool. Confirm that Silk Touch is on the tool you plan to use before heading to the reef.
- Choose the exact coral form. Identify whether you want a decorative piece, a full coral block, or a fan, and check its color.
- Mine the coral with the enchanted tool. Coral breaks quickly, but the enchantment is what matters for collecting it alive.
- Keep the living coral in water after placing it. A successful drop does not make the coral safe to display out of water.
One guide reports that Silk Touch mining does not reduce tool durability, but this detail is not firmly established here. Do not rely on it when planning tool use.

What happens without Silk Touch
Mining coral without Silk Touch does not preserve the living coral as a collectible: the result is a gray dead coral block. If your aim is to obtain a vibrant color for a build, stop and get a Silk Touch tool before breaking the reef pieces you want.
Keeping coral alive after placement
A coral block dies when placed out of water. Coral fans also need nearby water; outside water they become dead coral fans, which cannot be revived. Keep living coral in an aquatic setting if preserving its color is important.
Coral blocks and fans are not identical
The placement guidance differs slightly by form. A coral block dies if it is out of water, while a coral fan needs nearby water. A fan placed without that water support will die. For a display that should remain vibrant, plan the water arrangement before placing the pieces instead of treating coral as a dry decorative block.

Edition timing reported for fans
One guide reports that fans die immediately outside water in Bedrock Edition and after a few seconds in Java Edition. That difference is edition-specific, and the timing is not independently confirmed here. The practical choice is the same in either edition: place fans with water nearby rather than relying on a delay.

A reported fan-display arrangement
A decorative suggestion is to place sand, pour water onto it so the sand becomes waterlogged, and then set coral fans on top. This method is reported as a way to keep fans from dying, but its reliability across current game versions and editions is not established. Test the arrangement with a spare fan before building around it.
Can coral be farmed?
Coral does not spread like ordinary plants, so it should not be treated as a self-expanding crop. One guide reports that bone meal used on suitable soil in a warm ocean can create new coral fans, but this is a low-confidence mechanic and should not be the foundation of a build or resource plan.

How many coral blocks are there?
There is no single reliable total unless the counting method is defined. One source counts six blocks for each color—three living and three dead—while another lists 15 unique living blocks. Those figures use different counting conventions, so quoting either as a universal total can mislead.
A clear way to describe the family is to separate the categories: five colors, three living shapes per color, and dead forms. That gives 15 living color-and-shape combinations, but it does not settle how a particular guide counts dead variants or other block distinctions. When comparing lists, check whether “coral” means the color names, all shapes, only living blocks, or both living and dead forms.
Why coral turns gray
Gray coral is the dead form. The two most relevant causes are breaking coral without Silk Touch, which leaves dead coral, and placing living coral where it does not have the water it needs. A dead coral fan cannot be revived, so avoid placing a living fan in a dry display if you need it to stay vibrant.
- Coral became gray as you mined it: The tool did not have Silk Touch.
- A coral block turned gray after placement: It was placed out of water.
- A fan turned gray in a build: It lacked nearby water or was outside water.
Version and edition caveats
Game mechanics can change between versions and editions, and the details available for this guide are not verified against the current patch. In particular, fan-death timing is reported differently for Bedrock and Java, while the bone-meal farming claim and the Silk Touch durability detail are less certain than the core collection and water requirements.
If a specific mechanic does not behave as described, first check the edition and game version you are playing. Treat the biome location, Silk Touch requirement for collecting living coral, and need for water to preserve living coral as the practical basics; test less-certain placement or farming techniques before committing valuable materials.
