A Minecraft chunk is a 16-by-16-block column that reaches from the bottom of the world to its top. Chunks are the units Minecraft uses to generate, store, transfer, render and simulate terrain. Render distance determines how much terrain your client draws; simulation distance determines where entities and game mechanics tick. Understanding that split lets you fix lag without blindly lowering every distance setting.
What is a Minecraft chunk?
Microsoft defines a chunk as “a portion of a world that’s 16 blocks wide and 16 blocks long, extending from the bottom to the top of the world.” Think of it as a vertical column with a 16×16 horizontal footprint. The column spans the complete buildable height for that world, rather than stopping at the surface or at a fixed shallow layer.
Terrain is generated and handled in these columns because a complete world is too large to keep active at once. As you explore, the game can generate new chunk data, read existing data from storage, transfer it between server and client, and place it in active memory. Chunks close to players are candidates for rendering or simulation; distant chunks can be unloaded from active work while their saved data remains on disk.
Chunks and subchunks are not the same thing
Modern Bedrock protocol documentation further divides terrain into 16×16×16 subchunks for transfer and processing. A subchunk is therefore a vertical slice inside a full chunk. When a technical explanation refers to a “subchunk,” it is describing one 16-block-high section, not replacing the 16×16 column definition of a chunk. Java and Bedrock also use different internal loading statuses and ticket rules, and those details can change between releases.

Chunk coordinates
Chunk boundaries occur at every 16-block interval on the X and Z axes. A block at X coordinates 0 through 15 is in one chunk; X 16 begins the next. The same rule applies to Z. Crossing a boundary changes the chunk coordinate even though terrain has no visible seam.
For planning, divide a block coordinate by 16 and take the mathematical floor to obtain its chunk coordinate. Flooring matters for negative positions: coordinates −1 through −16 belong to chunk −1, while coordinate −17 begins chunk −2. This lets you map a build, farm or redstone system to the exact columns it occupies.
Loading, rendering and simulation: three different jobs
Loading
Loading means that chunk information is being generated, read, transferred or placed in active memory so the client or server can use it. A chunk may be loaded for data access without every game mechanic inside it running at full activity. The exact names for loading states and the rules that keep a chunk active differ between Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
Rendering
Rendering is the client’s visual work. Microsoft defines render distance as the distance in chunks from the camera that the engine draws. Increasing it makes more terrain, entities, particles and effects eligible for display, which increases graphics, memory and chunk-mesh work on the client. Render distance can affect frame rate even when the server is ticking normally.

Simulation
Simulation distance controls where game logic ticks. Within that area, entities can behave, mobs can spawn, plants can grow, fluids can move and other scheduled updates can run. Simulation distance usually costs more than render distance because it creates work for both the server and the client. On a dedicated server, that work also has to be completed quickly enough to maintain the target tick rate for every player.
These settings overlap but are not interchangeable. A chunk can be visible while mechanics farther from the player are outside the simulation range, and a chunk kept active by another loading mechanism can run logic without being within the camera’s drawn area. Do not assume that “visible” means “fully ticking.”
How far do chunks load?
There is no single cross-edition formula that gives one universal loaded-chunk radius. The result depends on Java or Bedrock, the game release, single-player or dedicated-server configuration, Realm or server settings, loading tickets and the workload around each player. Render distance is a client setting, while simulation and other active-area rules can be controlled separately.
For Bedrock, Microsoft’s current documentation lists these configurable ranges:

| Setting | Documented Bedrock range | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Render distance | 4–96 chunks | How far from the camera the client draws terrain |
| Simulation distance | 4–12 chunks | Where entities, spawning, growth, fluids and other game mechanics tick |
| Separate ticking areas | Up to 10 areas, each up to 100 chunks | Chunks kept ticking independently of a player’s normal range |
Those numbers describe Bedrock documentation updated in 2025, not universal Java defaults. Java servers and worlds expose their own distance controls, and a server can impose limits different from the client’s preference. A player may therefore see fewer chunks than expected if the server view distance is lower, or see terrain that is not simulating because the simulation range is smaller.
How to show chunk borders
Java Edition
Java Edition includes chunk-border rendering as a debug feature. Use the Chunk Borders control documented for your exact Java release; Mojang’s debug controls and their key or menu presentation can change. If a shortcut has moved, open the current release’s debug instructions or key controls rather than relying on a key combination from an older tutorial.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen enabled, the overlay marks the 16-block boundaries on the X and Z axes. Walk across a marked line and the chunk coordinate changes. This is useful for checking whether a farm, redstone machine, storage system or mob platform crosses into another column.
Bedrock Edition
Bedrock’s controls and debug overlays are edition- and version-specific, so do not assume that a Java shortcut exists. If your Bedrock release does not provide a built-in border overlay, use the coordinate display and the 16-block rule: positions where X or Z is a multiple of 16 are boundary lines. Community tools and behavior packs may add visual guides, but their compatibility depends on the release and they are not part of the universal Bedrock settings documented by Microsoft.

Using borders for builds and farms
- Record the chunk coordinates of the blocks that contain a farm’s spawning platforms, villagers, redstone clocks or item-processing areas.
- Check whether a machine straddles a border. A border does not automatically break a contraption, but it can make loading and ticking behavior harder to reason about.
- Keep related components in known columns when diagnosing intermittent behavior, then test with the same player position and distance settings.
Why loading chunks causes lag
Terrain generation and transfer
Exploring new terrain can cause short stalls while chunks are generated, read and transferred. Crossing a border may produce a one-frame hitch as the next column is prepared. On a multiplayer server, the server must generate or retrieve the data and send it to the client, so slow storage, CPU contention or network delay can make the hitch more noticeable.

A high render distance increases the number of chunk meshes, textures, entities and effects the client must maintain. If the symptom is low frames per second, stuttering that follows camera movement or high graphics-memory use while the server’s tick rate remains healthy, reduce render distance first. Particles and other visual effects can also saturate the GPU even when the distance value is unchanged.
Simulation-distance pressure
Simulation distance is the more expensive distance setting in many worlds because it expands active game logic on both sides of the connection. More simulated chunks mean more entity updates, spawning checks, plant growth, fluids, redstone and scheduled block updates. If players experience delayed block actions, slow mob movement or a declining server tick rate, lower simulation distance or reduce always-active areas rather than only reducing render distance.
Entities and artificial complexity
Distance settings are not the whole workload. Microsoft’s performance guidance notes that many entities can slow the server through path-finding and AI, while the client also pays to render them. Villager halls, mob farms, item piles, armor stands, dense animal pens and command-heavy builds can lag even in a small visible area. Limiting entity count, AI complexity and density in loaded chunks often helps more than lowering the view distance again.

Spawn chunks and release-sensitive behavior
Mojang’s Java 1.21.9 notes state that spawn chunks carry a memory and performance cost and discuss alternative chunk-loading methods. Treat spawn-chunk behavior as release-sensitive: do not apply assumptions from an older Java version to every current world, and check the notes for the release you run.

Use the symptom and the responsible workload to choose a setting:
- Low FPS, graphics-memory pressure or visual stutter: reduce client render distance, particles or other visual effects.
- Delayed ticks, slow entities or server-side lag: reduce simulation distance and review ticking areas, redstone and entity AI.
- Hitches only while exploring new terrain: investigate generation, storage and network transfer rather than treating the issue as a permanent tick-rate problem.
- Lag around one build: count entities and inspect path-finding, item piles, command systems and redstone in that loaded area.
A lower render distance does not necessarily reduce server simulation work, and a lower simulation distance does not guarantee higher client frame rates if the GPU is overloaded by effects or visible entities.
A practical troubleshooting procedure
- Classify the symptom. Decide whether you are seeing low FPS, delayed game ticks, slow terrain generation, network delay or a brief hitch when crossing a chunk boundary.
- Record the environment. Note Java or Bedrock, the exact game version, client render distance, server view and simulation settings, player count and whether the area contains farms, entities, redstone or ticking systems.
- Change one matching control. For client graphics pressure, lower render distance or visual effects. For server tick pressure, lower simulation distance or reduce separate ticking areas. For a local hotspot, remove or relocate excess entities and simplify AI-heavy designs.
- Retest under the same workload. Return to the same coordinates, keep player count and activity comparable, and measure whether the original symptom changes. Testing in an empty field can hide the workload that caused the problem.
- Check edition and release notes. If a border overlay, spawn behavior or loading rule differs from a tutorial, verify the controls and mechanics for your current version instead of copying an old key or default.
Designing chunk-aware builds
Chunk borders are planning tools, not magical barriers. A machine can cross a border, but knowing its boundaries helps you identify which columns must remain loaded and which components may stop ticking when a player moves away. Mark the chunk coordinates for farms, portals, villager areas and storage systems before expanding them.
For multiplayer bases, keep high-entity builds separated from ordinary living areas where practical. A dense villager hall can affect everyone sharing the same active region, while a distant build may have no cost until it is loaded or kept active by a ticking mechanism. Test a design at its intended player count; a contraption that is acceptable alone may become expensive when several players load separate entity-heavy regions.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- A chunk is a 16×16 block column extending through the world’s vertical height.
- Subchunks are 16×16×16 processing sections used in modern Bedrock protocol handling; they are not synonyms for full chunks.
- Render distance is primarily client drawing work; simulation distance expands ticking work on the client and server.
- Bedrock’s documented ranges are 4–96 chunks for render distance and 4–12 for simulation distance, with up to 10 ticking areas of up to 100 chunks each.
- Entity AI, path-finding, particles, redstone and command systems can dominate performance independently of distance settings.
- Use release-specific Java debug controls or coordinate math in Bedrock to locate borders, and never assume a cross-edition loading radius.
