A Minecraft cauldron is a container block crafted with seven iron ingots in a U shape. You can fill it with water, lava, potions or powder snow, then empty it with a bucket. In Bedrock Edition, it has two extra uses: dyed water can color leather equipment, and potion-filled cauldrons can turn arrows into tipped arrows.

This guide shows how to craft or find a cauldron, fill and empty it safely, use every documented content type, dye leather gear, prepare potion arrows, and diagnose the edition-specific behavior that often causes confusion.

What a cauldron does

A cauldron is both a storage block and a workstation block. Its primary job is holding a selected liquid or powder snow. Mojang’s official Block of the Month: Cauldron article describes it as holding “water, lava, potions, and even powder snow.” The same article identifies the cauldron as the job-site block for leatherworker villagers.

  • Crafting: seven iron ingots arranged as a U in a crafting bench.
  • Natural generation: cauldrons can appear in swamp huts, igloos, village tanneries, trail ruins and woodland mansions.
  • Filling: use a bucket containing the desired material on the cauldron.
  • Emptying: use an empty bucket on the filled cauldron.
  • Bedrock-only documented features: dyed water for coloring leather equipment and potion liquid for making tipped arrows.
  • Unsupported fill: milk does not fill a cauldron.

How to craft a cauldron

You need exactly seven iron ingots and a crafting bench. Arrange them in a U shape: iron occupies both sides and the entire bottom row, while the top-center and middle-center slots remain empty.

The table represents the three-by-three crafting grid by columns: place iron in the left and right columns, then fill all three slots in the bottom row. When the pattern is correct, collect the cauldron from the result slot. If the recipe does not appear, count the ingots again and check that the open spaces form the center of the U rather than one of the sides.

Crafting versus finding

Approach What you need What to expect
Crafting Seven iron ingots and a crafting bench Predictable and available whenever you have the required iron.
Finding Access to generated structures Cauldrons may be present in swamp huts, igloos, village tanneries, trail ruins or woodland mansions; generation is not guaranteed in every example of a structure.

Crafting is the dependable option when you need a cauldron at a known location. Searching is useful when exploring one of the listed structures and you want to avoid spending seven ingots, but a structure without a cauldron is not evidence that the block is unavailable in that world.

Where cauldrons generate naturally

The documented natural locations are:

  • Swamp huts
  • Igloos
  • Village tanneries
  • Trail ruins
  • Woodland mansions

These locations are useful search targets, but they are not a replacement for the recipe when you need a guaranteed block. A practical exploration plan is to note which structure you are visiting, inspect the interior and work areas, and craft a cauldron if the structure does not contain one. Do not assume that every village building, hut or ruin has an identical layout.

How to fill and empty a cauldron

Fill it with a supported material

  1. Place the cauldron where you want the container or workstation.
  2. Hold a bucket containing the material you want to store: water, lava, a potion or powder snow, according to the edition-specific rules for that material.
  3. Aim at the cauldron and use the bucket. The cauldron receives the bucket’s contents.
  4. Check the block before attempting another interaction. A cauldron already holding one material should be treated as occupied; do not expect a second material to combine with it.

The interaction is deliberately simple: the bucket is the transfer tool, and the cauldron is the destination. Milk is the important exception. A bucket of milk does not fill a cauldron, so repeatedly using milk on an empty cauldron will not create a milk container.

Empty it with a bucket

  1. Select an empty bucket.
  2. Aim at the filled cauldron.
  3. Use the bucket to remove the cauldron’s contents.
  4. Use the collected material where needed, or leave the cauldron empty for a different supported material.

If the bucket does nothing, verify that it is empty for removal or contains the intended material for filling, that your aim is on the cauldron itself, and that the material is supported. Milk failing to transfer is normal behavior, not a control error.

What a cauldron can hold

Contents Documented behavior Edition caution
Water Use a water bucket to fill the cauldron; an empty bucket removes the contents. General cauldron behavior.
Lava Use a lava bucket to fill it and an empty bucket to remove the contents. General cauldron behavior.
Potions Potions can be stored in cauldrons from glass bottles. The documented storage and arrow use are specifically for Bedrock Edition.
Powder snow A cauldron can hold powder snow even though it is not a conventional liquid. Included in Mojang’s general description of cauldron contents.
Dyed water Water in the cauldron can be dyed and then used to color leather equipment. Bedrock Edition.
Milk Milk does not fill a cauldron. Applies to the documented cauldron interaction.

The cited Mojang material explains which materials are supported but does not establish a universal numerical capacity or a cross-edition parity chart. Avoid assuming that a Java Edition behavior, a Bedrock Edition behavior or an unlisted liquid works identically without checking the documentation for the edition you are playing.

Using water in a cauldron

Water is the most straightforward cauldron setup. Fill the block with a water bucket, then use an empty bucket when you need to remove the water. In Bedrock Edition, ordinary water is also the starting point for the dyed-water mechanic.

Bedrock Edition: make dyed water

  1. Confirm that you are playing Bedrock Edition. The dyed-water behavior described here is edition-specific.
  2. Fill an empty cauldron with regular, undyed water.
  3. Select a dye and use it on the water-filled cauldron.
  4. The water becomes dyed to the dye’s color.
  5. Use the dyed water with leather armor, leather horse armor or wolf armor to color the equipment.

This process makes the cauldron a reusable color station: the color comes from the water in the block, not from placing dye directly on the armor in the interaction described by Mojang. Keep separate cauldrons when you need several colors at once, or empty the current contents before preparing another color.

Wash the color out

  1. Prepare a cauldron containing undyed water.
  2. Use the dyed leather armor, leather horse armor or wolf armor on that undyed-water cauldron.
  3. The water washes the color from the equipment.

The distinction between dyed and undyed water matters. Dyed water applies a color; undyed water is the documented way to clean that color from the supported leather equipment. This feature is documented for Bedrock Edition, so do not treat the absence of the same interaction in Java Edition as a failed recipe.

Using lava

Lava is one of the materials explicitly listed as cauldron content. The procedure is the same transfer pattern: use a lava bucket on the cauldron to fill it, then an empty bucket on the filled block to remove the contents. Keep the lava workflow separate from water or dyed-water work so an accidental fill does not replace the material you intended to keep.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A cauldron’s ability to hold lava does not imply that it accepts every fluid. The documented milk exception remains important, and the source does not establish additional fluids beyond water, lava, potions and powder snow.

Using powder snow

Powder snow is named alongside water, lava and potions in Mojang’s description of cauldron contents. When your edition and bucket interaction provide powder snow, target the cauldron with the appropriate bucket to store it. An empty bucket is the documented removal tool.

Because powder snow is described as a supported cauldron content rather than as a conventional liquid, do not use the word “liquid” as a test for whether something belongs in a cauldron. The reliable test is whether the material is one of the documented contents and whether the bucket interaction succeeds.

Bedrock Edition potion cauldrons

Bedrock Edition adds a potion workflow beyond simple storage. Mojang states that Bedrock cauldrons can be filled with potions from glass bottles. A potion-filled cauldron can then transfer its potion effect to arrows.

Store a potion

  1. Place an empty cauldron.
  2. Hold a glass bottle containing the potion you want to store.
  3. Use the bottle on the cauldron to fill it with potion liquid.
  4. Keep the potion-filled block as the source for the arrow conversion step.

The documented statement concerns filling from glass bottles; it does not establish that milk, an arbitrary liquid or an unlisted container can be stored the same way.

Make tipped arrows

  1. Use Bedrock Edition and prepare a cauldron filled with the desired potion.
  2. Hold a stack of arrows.
  3. Use the arrows on the potion-filled cauldron.
  4. The stack is converted into tipped arrows carrying that potion’s effect.

The potion effect on the resulting tipped arrows comes from the potion liquid in the cauldron. If the conversion does not occur, check the three requirements first: the edition must be Bedrock, the cauldron must contain potion liquid rather than plain water, and you must be using a stack of arrows.

Edition differences: what you can safely assume

Feature Bedrock Edition Java Edition
Crafting with seven iron ingots Documented recipe. The cited article does not provide a separate Java recipe qualification.
Water, lava and powder snow storage Included in the general cauldron description. Do not infer any additional behavior beyond the documented contents.
Dyed water for leather armor, leather horse armor and wolf armor Documented. Not established by the cited article; do not assume parity.
Potion storage from glass bottles Documented. Not established by the cited article.
Converting a stack of arrows to tipped arrows Documented for potion-filled cauldrons. Not established by the cited article.
Milk filling a cauldron Does not fill. The cited article does not present a separate edition exception.

Edition labels are not cosmetic. If you are following a Bedrock tutorial while playing Java, the dyed-water or potion-arrow steps may not be available as described. Conversely, a Bedrock player should still confirm that the cauldron actually contains potion liquid before trying the arrow interaction.

Cauldrons and leatherworker villagers

A cauldron also acts as the job-site block for leatherworker villagers. This role is separate from storing water, lava, potions or powder snow: the block can serve as a villager workstation even when you are not using it as a container.

That makes a cauldron useful in two different plans. In a village build, place or preserve it where the leatherworker’s workstation is intended. In a personal dyeing station, use a separate cauldron if you do not want workstation placement and color preparation to interfere with each other.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause Fix
The recipe will not craft. The grid is not a seven-ingot U shape. Put iron in the left and right columns and all three bottom slots; leave the two center slots empty.
A bucket will not fill the cauldron. The bucket is empty, contains an unsupported material, or is aimed at the wrong block. Use a bucket containing water, lava or another documented content, aim at the cauldron, and use the interaction.
Milk disappears from the plan without filling the block. Milk does not fill cauldrons. Use water, lava, a supported potion or powder snow instead.
Dye does nothing. You are not on Bedrock Edition, or the cauldron is not filled with regular undyed water. Use Bedrock Edition and start with an undyed-water cauldron.
Leather gear will not lose its color. The cauldron contains dyed water rather than undyed water. Use an undyed-water cauldron with the colored armor.
Arrows do not become tipped. The cauldron is not potion-filled, the arrows are not a stack, or the world is not Bedrock Edition. Verify all three Bedrock requirements and use the arrows on the potion-filled block.
A searched structure has no cauldron. Natural generation is not guaranteed in every structure instance. Search the listed structures or craft one with seven iron ingots.

Choosing the right cauldron workflow

Use the following decision path before placing materials:

  1. Need a dependable container? Craft the block from seven iron ingots instead of relying on exploration.
  2. Need ordinary storage? Choose water, lava or powder snow, then transfer it with the corresponding bucket.
  3. Need colored leather gear? Confirm Bedrock Edition, prepare undyed water, add dye to the cauldron, and use the dyed water with the supported leather equipment.
  4. Need to remove a color? Use undyed water with the dyed armor, horse armor or wolf armor.
  5. Need potion arrows? Confirm Bedrock Edition, fill the cauldron from a glass bottle, and use a stack of arrows on the potion-filled block.
  6. Need a leatherworker workstation? Treat the cauldron as a villager job-site block, independently of its stored contents.

Quick reference checklist

  • Seven iron ingots make one cauldron in a U shape.
  • Natural locations include swamp huts, igloos, village tanneries, trail ruins and woodland mansions.
  • Supported documented contents are water, lava, potions and powder snow.
  • Use a bucket containing the desired material to fill the block.
  • Use an empty bucket to remove the contents.
  • Milk does not fill a cauldron.
  • Bedrock Edition supports dyed water for leather armor, leather horse armor and wolf armor.
  • Undyed water washes that color out of the supported equipment.
  • Bedrock potion cauldrons can convert a stack of arrows into tipped arrows carrying the potion effect.
  • A cauldron is the leatherworker villager’s job-site block.

Mojang’s official Block of the Month: Cauldron article, dated 25 November 2024 and authored by Duncan Geere, is the source of the documented crafting, storage, generation, dyed-water and potion-arrow descriptions used here. Where that article does not establish Java-versus-Bedrock parity or numerical capacity details, the guide keeps the claim qualified rather than extending it to an unverified edition or mechanic.
