Craft a Minecraft bundle by placing one String above one Leather in the crafting grid. A bundle combines different item types in one inventory slot, with capacity equal to one normal stack (usually 64 items). In Java Edition, left-click inserts items, right-click removes the selected item type, and the mouse wheel changes the selected visible type. Holding the bundle and right-clicking empties its contents onto the ground. Bedrock Edition uses input-specific selection controls, so mouse, controller and touch players interact with bundles differently.
What a bundle does
A bundle is a compact inventory container designed for mixed, small quantities of items. Instead of occupying separate slots for several partial stacks, different item types can share one bundle slot. Mojang describes it as an item that can “pack different items together into the same stack.”
The important limit is that a bundle does not add unlimited storage. Its total capacity is the equivalent of one ordinary stack, usually 64 items. That capacity can be made up of different item types rather than 64 copies of one type. For standard 64-stack items, it is useful to think of the bundle as one stack-sized pocket that can contain a mixture of materials. The exact space available is still governed by Minecraft’s normal item-stacking rules, so “usually 64” is the safer description than treating every item as identical.
Why bundles help during exploration
- They consolidate partial stacks. A few blocks, drops or plants that would each occupy their own inventory slots can be grouped together.
- They are useful early in a world. Exploration often produces many miscellaneous drops before you have a large storage system. One bundle can gather those leftovers without requiring a chest immediately.
- They preserve a regular inventory slot. The bundle itself occupies one slot, regardless of how many item types are visible inside it.
A bundle is therefore best viewed as an organization tool for mixed, low-quantity items. It is not an upgrade that raises the total number of items you can carry without limit. Once the bundle reaches its one-stack capacity, you must remove something before inserting more.

How to craft a bundle
The current recipe is deliberately simple: place one String directly above one Leather. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.2 release notes state, “The Bundle is crafted with one String above one Leather.”

Crafting steps
- Open a crafting grid.
- Place one String in a slot.
- Place one Leather immediately below the String, forming a vertical pair.
- Take the resulting bundle from the output slot.
The ingredients must be in that vertical order. If the output does not appear, check that the String is above the Leather rather than beside it, and that you used Leather rather than another hide or a visually similar material.

Why older guides may show rabbit hide
Early bundle prototypes used rabbit hide. Mojang’s snapshot notes explain that the recipe was changed so the item would be easier to obtain near the beginning of a world. A guide that tells you to use rabbit hide is describing an earlier design, not the current String-and-Leather recipe documented for Java Edition 1.21.2.
Using a bundle in Java Edition
Java Edition exposes the bundle’s inventory through mouse actions. The action you get depends on whether you are adding an item, taking one out, choosing a different visible type, or holding the bundle in your hand.
Insert an item
- Have the item you want to store available in your inventory.
- Target the bundle in the inventory interface.
- Use left-click to put the item into the bundle.
The bundle can contain different item types together. For example, you can use one bundle for assorted exploration leftovers rather than dedicating one inventory slot to each small group. The bundle stops accepting items when its one-stack capacity is full.

Remove the selected item type
- Make the bundle’s tooltip visible by pointing to the bundle.
- Use right-click to take out the first, or top, item type.
- Repeat the action if you need more of that selected type.
“Top” refers to the item type currently presented by the bundle interface, not necessarily the item you most recently inserted. If the item you need is not the one selected, change the selection before removing it.

When the tooltip is visible, scroll with the mouse wheel to move through the item types that the tooltip can show. Once the desired type is selected, right-click to remove it. The selected item is visually indicated by poking out of the bundle icon, which gives you a confirmation before you take it out.
Empty a held bundle onto the ground
There is a separate action when the bundle is in your hand rather than being managed in the inventory interface. Hold the bundle and right-click, or hold right-click, to empty items onto the ground. This is a fast way to unload the contents, but it places the items in the world instead of returning them directly to an inventory slot. Use it where the dropped items can be collected safely.
Understanding the Java tooltip
The tooltip is more than a label: it is the bundle’s content list and the place where you select what to remove.
Fewer than 12 item types
If the bundle contains fewer than 12 different item types, the tooltip shows all of them. You can scroll through the visible types and choose the one you want to remove. This makes a lightly packed bundle easy to audit before you add or take out anything.

12 or more item types
At 12 or more item types, the tooltip is truncated. It shows the top three rows and hides additional items below those rows. Only the visible entries can be selected directly from that view. Scroll through the visible choices, watch which item pokes out of the icon, and remove that item before trying to reach the next one.
The truncation is a display rule, not an indication that the hidden contents disappeared. If you cannot see a particular item, first remove or reorganize visible entries until the item becomes available in the tooltip.
Using bundles in Bedrock Edition
Bedrock’s documented selection methods depend on the device you use. Bedrock Edition 1.21.40 release notes describe bundle selection with the mouse wheel on a mouse-and-keyboard setup, the right stick on a game controller, or a tap on a touch device.

The underlying idea is the same as in Java: select a visible content type, then use the platform’s interaction control to remove or manage it. The exact on-screen prompt can vary with the Bedrock device and control layout, so follow the action shown by your current interface rather than assuming a mouse button exists on a controller or touchscreen.
Bedrock creator and add-on note
For creators working with Bedrock’s item components, Microsoft Learn documents the minecraft:bundle_interaction component. It requires minecraft:storage_item and is available without an experimental toggle in Bedrock 1.21.110. This is a technical availability detail for custom content; it does not change the normal player controls on an unmodified world.

Java and Bedrock: what is the same and what differs

The recipe and storage idea are easy to confuse with the controls. The major practical difference is input: Java’s instructions are written around left-click, right-click and mouse-wheel selection, while Bedrock documents equivalent selection through mouse, controller and touch inputs.

Use it for miscellaneous drops
During a cave trip, village visit or general exploration, collect small groups of unrelated items in one bundle. This is where the one-slot design has the most value: several partial stacks can travel together without each one consuming a separate slot.

A bundle is slower to manage than a normal hotbar stack because you must open its tooltip and select a content type before removing it. Keep tools, building blocks or combat items you expect to use immediately in ordinary inventory or hotbar slots. Put low-priority miscellaneous items in the bundle.
Plan around the visible list
With fewer than 12 item types, every type appears in the tooltip. At 12 or more, only the top three rows are shown. If you are about to add another distinct type, consider whether the resulting truncated view will make the bundle harder to manage. Removing a few visible leftovers first can be more convenient than filling the bundle indiscriminately.
Check capacity before a long trip
Because the total is one stack rather than one full stack per item type, a bundle fills sooner than its number of icons might suggest. If you need predictable room for a particular material, remove enough contents to leave space before continuing to collect.

How to empty or reorganize contents safely
- Point to the bundle and read its tooltip before changing anything.
- Identify whether the needed item is visible. If there are 12 or more item types, remember that some entries are hidden below the three displayed rows.
- In Java, scroll to a visible type and right-click to remove it. In Bedrock, use the mouse wheel, right stick or touch selection documented for your device.
- Repeat until the bundle has the contents you actually want to keep.
- If you want to discard everything quickly in Java, hold the bundle and right-click to drop the contents on the ground.
Do not use the ground-dump action as a substitute for ordinary removal when the items are valuable. Dropping everything changes the problem from inventory management to item collection, and the items must then be picked up again individually or in nearby groups.
Troubleshooting common bundle problems
The crafting output is missing
- Confirm the arrangement is vertical: String in the upper slot and Leather directly below it.
- Check that you used exactly one of each ingredient.
- Replace rabbit hide or any other substitute with Leather; rabbit hide belongs to the earlier prototype recipe.
- Verify the feature and recipe are available in the specific edition and version you are playing. The cited recipe wording is from Java Edition 1.21.2 release notes.
An item will not go into the bundle
- Make sure you are targeting the bundle itself, not an adjacent inventory slot.
- In Java, use the documented left-click insertion action.
- Check whether the bundle is already at its one-stack capacity. A bundle can mix types, but it cannot exceed the total capacity.
The wrong item comes out
- Right-click removes the selected top type in Java, so first inspect the tooltip.
- Scroll the mouse wheel to another visible type, then right-click again.
- If the bundle contains 12 or more item types, the desired entry may be outside the truncated three-row display. Remove visible entries or continue navigating until it becomes selectable.
The bundle seems to empty unexpectedly
Check whether you are holding it in your hand. In Java, right-clicking while holding a bundle empties items onto the ground, unlike inventory management where right-click removes a selected type. Look around the player for dropped items and collect them before moving away.
Controller or touch selection feels different
That difference is expected in Bedrock. The 1.21.40 documentation assigns selection to the mouse wheel, controller right stick or a touch tap. Use the prompt and control scheme shown by your device rather than applying Java’s left- and right-click instructions literally.
Version and recipe context
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.2 release notes provide the clearest statements about the recipe, one-stack capacity and Java mouse controls. Bedrock Edition 1.21.40 release notes document selection methods across mouse, controller and touch. For Bedrock creators, Microsoft Learn lists the bundle interaction component as available without an experimental toggle in version 1.21.110 when paired with the required storage component.
These version references matter because bundle behavior and documentation can be edition-specific. If a control or recipe does not match this guide, identify whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and check the version number before treating the difference as a bug.
